After scoring 16 goals and providing eight assists in his maiden campaign in the Premier League, hopes were high for Alexis Sanchez coming into the new season, despite concerns over the Chilean’s fitness levels after his exploits for his country in this summer’s Copa America.

With just a single assist to show from the first four Gameweeks, though, many of Sanchez’ 12% ownership in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) will soon start questioning whether the Arsenal attacker is worth his considerable 11.0 price tag. In this ‘Monitor’ article for members, we compare the former Barcelona man’s underlying statistics from last season to this in order to ascertain just why he is failing to live up to his 2014/15 exploits.

England match tonight against Switzerland and we have already qualified - a match to play our best team for continuity/keeping up form, or a match to experiment to see if the fringe players are good enough against decent opposition in a competitive match?

I’ve been struggling to decide who to play between Butland and McCarthy, as I’m not sure which is the better fixture for a keeper, ars or MCI. Instinctively, I followed the logic of going for the home player, and the bookies clean sheet odds suggest that Palace (MCI) are likelier to keep one than Stoke (ars). Arsenal have been struggling to score at home lately though, blanking in 5 of their last 6 at the Emirates in the league, which gave me pause for thought.

To help me out, I looked at the total points scored by Goalkeepers playing ars and MCI last season. City scored 39 goals away from home and were shut out on 1 occasion last season. Arsenal scored 41 goals at home and were shut out on 3 occasions last season. It doesn’t look like there’s much in it there, but keepers comfortably averaged more points away at Arsenal than at home to City, largely due to save points.

Interested by this discovery, to try and see how much of a role save points play, I’ve worked out last season’s average Points Per Game for goalkeepers by fixture, excluding games against the three relegated teams. Keepers keep more clean sheets and concede fewer goals at home, but pick up more save points away from home.

So that I was looking purely at the balance between these factors, I’ve excluded points won and lost for yellow cards, red cards, own goals and penalty saves (as well as bonus points gained as a result). If an injury or red card caused more than two goalkeepers from the same team to play in a fixture, I’ve worked out the points as if they were one player. These were the best fixtures for a keeper, sorted by PPG:

    SUN – 4.53
    NEW – 4.47
    SOU – 4.21
    CPL, LIV – 4.05
    AVL, WBA – 3.95
    MUN, sun – 3.89
    avl – 3.79
    lei – 3.74
    cpl– 3.68
    WHM – 3.63
    EVE – 3.58
    LEI – 3.42
    tot – 3.37
    SWA – 3.32
    wba – 3.21
ars, eve, liv, sou, STO – 3.16
    whm – 2.95
    new – 2.89
    ARS, swa – 2.79
    CHE – 2.68
    mci, sto – 2.63
    TOT – 2.53
    mun – 2.47
    MCI – 2.21
    che – 2.11

The first thing that I noticed is that even though keepers make more saves in away matches, they still get more points at home – clean sheets should always be the main factor when choosing which keeper to play. In fact, the only teams against whom keepers averaged more points away than at home were Arsenal, Leicester, Man City and Spurs. In each of these cases, being at home or away didn’t make much difference to a keepers' clean sheet prospects, but they made significantly more saves in the away fixture.

Keepers score more points at home to most teams then, with the exception being top attacking sides who are equally good away from home. In that case. save points mean that an away fixture will see your keeper average more points. That said, save points do still have a big effect on determining the best fixtures for a keeper.

Conversely to what you may have expected, SOU, MUN and LIV were all excellent fixtures for a keeper last season. These teams struggled to score as many goals away from home, but being good teams, they also provided keepers with plenty of save points.

On the other hand, several fixtures away to mid-table sides were as bad as or worse than those away at the better teams in the league. Sides like West Ham, Newcastle, Swansea and Stoke all failed to score at home on just three occasions, but as they also didn’t pepper keepers with that many shots, you’d have been better off playing a keeper away at the likes of Arsenal, Liverpool, Southampton or Tottenham.

Apologies for such a long post on something so dull! And credit must go to The3rdTurd for his public tableau of last season’s FPL scores, without which I couldn’t have carried out the research.

I agree, but I think it's a little early to be drawing conclusions from those stats. I'm a firm believer that fixtures create form when it comes to clean sheet points. The stats are useful for pointing out which of the top teams are doing well so far, but for the rest of the league, it really just shows how difficult their opening fixtures have been. In a month's time though, I'll be looking at them very closely.

I would still play Mignolet there. When choosing between Stoke and Palace, there's very little chance of a clean sheet either way. On the other hand, no-one kept more clean sheets away from home than Liverpool last season (8), and they've already kept 2 this season in very difficult fixtures (sto and ars).

        Fantastic post. Thank, you, Ludo.
What we also need to remember is that these are average scores, and do not take into account how good your defence and goalkeeper are. Brilliant table for those of us who have similar quality keepers. I currently have Ruddy and Butland, neither of whom have done well for points. But I did notice Butland pull off a series of great saved recently so might still opt for him (ARS) over Ruddy (BOU).
Basically, I have taken your advice on board, considered it, and now going to ignore it!

Butland will get a ridiculous amount of points if he stops Arsenal, not that big a task if you look at their recent home form.

Byhill may just get the 6 points you need though.

Risk/Reward :D, I'll make the unpopular decision and go Butters

Why do you have such an expensive MF? Downgrade someone in there for a 4.5 or under mid, this will also save the hassle of having to think about who to bench each week. Your defense needs upgrading, Oxford and Richards need to go.

        1. Fanta sea
          • 10 Years
          10 years, 3 months ago

I have 1.7mil ITB so the MF could've been even more expensive. I like the "hassle" of having to choose which players to play. I agree that the defence needs upgrading, especially Oxford but I don't see many players that are worthy of putting in at the moment. I can't put any city players in since I have 3 already. I've been thinking about putting bellerin in but I want to make sure that arsenal are looking good defensively before I put them in.

The wealth is spread around the team which allows for greater maneuvering in the transfer market. It also helps with increasing my team value which will allow me to get better players in the future. That's why I have an "expensive" midfield which all gain value as the weeks go on. I then sell for a profit and use that money to do the whole process agan. That's why my team value currently is at 102.9 mil

Great article. There is one possible reason for the accuracy statistic - I blogged about it earlier this week. 🙂

Who will hit some form first, Hazard or Sanchez? With very similar fixtures on the horizon, I'm scratching my head.

Honestly I think both are overpriced.

Pedro and Özil for example can score as much points as either of them.

I'd be very interested to see stats on how many have switched from Hazard to Pedro. Looks a better prospect than Arsenal mids but its hard to see Hazard not producing soon.

Just wait till one of them fires then start to put them in. Set a plan up now so that you can afford them when the time arrives. I have 1.7 mil in the bank just for this reason.

I suppose the real question is, Hazard > Sanchez or Pedro? OR, gamble on Hazard again?

I'd guess his high ownership must largely casuals making him a potential differential

I'd switch to Pedro from Hazard. Fantasy football is about trusting your head and not your heart. Sure it would be great if Hazard starts firing but Pedro is proving right now that he's the guy to go for.

Going for Sanchez is a gamble.
            Keeping Hazard is a gamble.

Switching to Pedro and having an extra 1.9mil in the bank is the wise move and one which could make your season.

So based on the two games in the EPL and the countless games we've seen of Pedro in the La Liga is the consensus at the moment that:

Pedro and Hazard will have a similar average position over the season
Similar assist threat overall due to Pedro's dominance of corners(Hazard should have more from open play)
Pedro greater goal threat from open play but Hazard will match him overall due to penos

Hence making them both great fpl options when Chelsea hit form but Pedro providing better value and being a safe alternative if cash is needed?

I haven't owned any Arsenal players so far. What made me do this was pre season I recalled listening to Arsenal fans on 606 for the last couple of years calling for Wenger to resign early on. I took this to mean they hadn't started too well so I ignored them. It hasn't gone that badly so far but they will improve and Sanchez will be the man at that point.

Both are great choices. Williams will play every game if fit and will hoover those Baps. Naughton can get you a cheeky assist now and then. Overall I'd go for Williams though.

Spurs will because of the way they are set up with both Mason and Dier in the middle. They're not attacking players and it's similar to the set up at united. The spurs attack will suffer but I think the defence will be solid throughout the season should poch play the same tactic.
