Captain Sensible – Gameweek 5

Our pre-Gameweek members article, which focuses on the main captaincy contenders, arrives once again this afternoon. As always, we take a three-part approach which includes the weekly poll standings, the Opta statistics and our Rate My Team projections to help steer your thoughts on the armband conundrum.

The Captain Poll

Sergio Aguero sits atop the summit for the third successive Gameweek but enjoys a significantly lower share of the vote (34% down from 58%) than our last Captain Poll. Primarily, this can be attributed to the tougher fixture in this round of fixtures – Gameweek 4 saw the Sky Blues play host to Watford yet they contend with a road tie against an in-form Crystal Palace outfit this weekend. The 2014/15 Golden Boot winner has registered just once in three starts but hopes are high of a return to form after he served up three goals and four assists in two matches for Argentina over the break. City’s marquee signing Kevin de Bruyne (2%) finds a place in the the top ten, with team-mate David Silva – who had earned 3% of votes – now ruled out through injury.

Alexis Sanchez is yet to grace the scoresheet this campaign but that hasn’t deterred 19% of voters from backing the Arsenal midfielder. The Chile international stands as the sole representative from the Gunners among the top ten ahead of a home clash against Stoke City, highlighting the lack of faith in an attack that’s tallied just three goals in four matches. No side has amassed more attempts (83) and shots inside the box (56) than Arsenal, though, suggesting Sanchez will be afforded every chance to score against the Potters.

Riyad Mahrez (5%), Bafetimbi Gomis and Pedro (both 4%) complete our top five. Mahrez boasts four goals in as many outings this season and will fancy his chances at home to an Aston Villa defence that’s kept just two clean sheets in their last 11 matches. Pedro, meanwhile, is favoured over Eden Hazard (2%) and Diego Costa (1%) for a trip to Everton, having recorded one goal and two assists for the Blues already. Gomis edges out Andre Ayew (3%) as the choice pick among Swansea’s attack. The French marksman – who’s the only player to net in every Gameweek – will be tested during a visit to a Watford outfit that have yet to concede at home.

Lying fifth, sixth and seventh, respectively in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) forward ownership charts, Harry Kane (1%), Callum Wilson (4%) and Romelu Lukaku (2%) have been backed by a handful of voters. Kane threatens to tee-off against a Sunderland back line that’s conceded the most goals (10) and shots inside the box (49) when Spurs travel up north, while Lukaku could profit at home to a Chelsea defence that’s conceded three more big chances (13) than any side in the league. Those managers handing Wilson the armband will point to his four goals in the previous two Gameweeks and the fact that Bournemouth face off against Norwich, who’ve shipped four goals in two home encounters.

    On WC:

    1) Cech -> Bergovic?
    2) Any decent 4.5 DEF options going?
    3) Is Gomez (LIV) worth going with on WC?

    Repost, might be good to discuss:

    Silva out should mean Aguero is going to step back a little and get more involved. Now, if he steps back, it should mean he'll score less, but at the same time he is going to be more involved which should mean a good thing for the owners.
    Bony could also be the one who replaces Silva, in which case Aguero would be moved to the no. 10
    role.

      Kun as support striker for Bony? Pellegrini tried that several times last season, each time a pretty abject failure.

      He might try it again though, I guess he needs to get Bony up to the level they paid all that money for.

          I agree, it is possible.

          It would seem to be a big gamble though - starting a struggling striker in his first game back from injury and playing the best striker in his least effective role. We'll have to wait and see.

        ^this. Hard to understand how anybody could make any other conclusion. And he's clearly out of form anyway, see his tally this season. If you haven't yet swapped Kun for Wilson, you'd better do it fast before they're the same price and you've lost some 7.5 in team value.

      Impressive stats for the 2013/14 season. But do they mean anything for the 2014/15 season? Aguero scored 26 goals in the league last season. The rest of the goals came while playing with Silva then?
      Do you have the stats for the "Aguero with Silva" for the last season too? That would provide some really good insight.
      Great post though!

        Really, I'm just trying to show that Aguero is not negatively impacted by Silva's absence. Not that he's better off without him! But, since you asked, here's how they've worked together this season and last:

        Aguero starting with Silva

        2015-16

        PL: 3 games and 1 goal

        2014-15

        PL: 24 games, 19 goals and 3 assists
        FA: 1 game
        CL: 4 games, 3 goals and 1 assist

        Overall: 32 games, 23 goals and 4 assists

        Same thinking here too. Now, city have more depth so its unlikely he'll be risked. Thankfully, have one FT.

          Probably not because I'm ok with Francis coming off the bench, I'd probably save. If I had 2FTs I would ditch. Depends on your team and plans I guess.

      On WC: Worth the extra 0.2?

      Cech & Gomez (10.3) -> Bergovic & Monreal (10.5)

      With Silva confirmed out this week……who would be the best replacements for him and Payet over 2 weeks transfers?

      A – Pedro and Sterling +£0.9m
      B – Hazard and £7.9m mid
      C – Keep transfer and start Diouf away at Stoke who is a doubt

        You've made me cosider things. My plan was to do Silva & Payet to Sterling/Yaya & Pedro in next two weeks. But I could do Silva & Payet to Hazard & Ayew for a hit this week. Worth it?

          I have Ayew too. He may be worth the hit but I would avoid it to be honest. Sterling moving up front the past couple of games has made me rethink silva. Good timing him being out I think. City’s fixtures and form are too good to not have 3 starters so pedro and sterling may be more beneficial than hazard and say mane. If you haven’t got ayew though I would defo go hazard and ayew over pedro and yaya!!

            Dilemma indeed. Who would be your 7.9m mid? Is it silly bringing Hazard in when there's little sign of any form?

      Hello, not really sure which is the best option (they might all be wrong!)
      Courtois (McCarthy)
      Shaw Kolarov Targett (Gomez S.Taylor)
      Hazard Montero Barkley Puncheon (Silva - going to keep for the week)
      Wilson Gomis Aguero

      (0.3m ITB, 1FT)
      1. Courtois -> Begovic
      2. Courtois -> Begovic, Barkley -> Mahrez
      3. Courtois -> Begoivc, Barkley -> Mahrez, Montero -> Ayew (8 point hit...)

      Barkley's fixtures are poor, Montero is a good player but Ayew is likely to get consistently more points I would think. Any suggestions? Cheers.

            Courtois-> Begovic
            Montero-> Ayew

            4pt hit and keep Barkley for a week?

      A. Silva > ayew (to free up funds, already have gomis and Williams)
      B. Silva > yaya
      C. Silva > sterling
      D. Silva > KDB
