  3. The too good 5th mid conundrum
    Bøwstring The Carp

So many with Alli on the bench

Really begs the question, is there any point in a 5th mid that is getting returns so regularly? The likelihood is we all have form players making up our starting 7, with a filler such as Stanislas, Gosling, Drinkwater, Alli, King and for those playing 3-5-2, Ighalo.

But is it worth the headache of having to bench a form player each week? How do you do this? You might say "I'll bench the player with the worst fixture" but if a player is on form, fixtures mean nothing as we saw today with Alli.

Another argument could be for if one of your players is rested or injured. Fair enough a training injury might be unforeseen, and having a strong 5th player could help out. But I think more often that not a decent defender can be just as beneficial as a 5th mid without the benching headache each week. Besides, unless you get an injury you're still going to have that annoying thought "did I bench the right player this week?" If a player is benched and he's a decent player, more often than not he may come on for a 1-pointer, making the 5th mid redundant.

I think a strong 5th mid is perfectly fine if you have no problem with the risk of benching double figure hauls from week to week.

Might get a "proper" 5th midfielder soon, because Alli is obviously one of the 4...

This is how I see it: the more good players, the better. Alli is on my bench because all my midfielders had better fixtures or have been in better form, but if say Özil got rested, I'd have Alli coming on instead of Westwood. Same thing with defenders and forwards, and even goalkeepers. I want the best players in my team, as many of them as possible.

Not sure why anyone has a problem with it. If I bench a haul that's my bad decision/luck. I'd rather have someone who can fill in when required, and have the option of benching when I think someone had a tough fixture.

Benched KDB away twice a couple of times, Barkley this week. Not going to be too bothered if I make a bad choice along the way.

        Well said, Sir!

When all is said and done, the player with the points is IN the squad, not OUT of it. And that has to be a good thing. One way, or another.

I don't have a problem with it, but it's apparent others do considering the amount of posts today when they realised Alli's haul was stuck on their bench.

A good fifth midfielder is like a safety net in case one of your other players is really off form. Eg I had Mané who couldn't buy a goal but was able to leave him on the bench until I had a spare ft to get rid

If you bench them every week and they score well then they'll go up in price.
I don't see it as points wasted, but more of an investment in TV.
      That said, I have Gosling.

Do we need TV with cheap players like Ighalo, Mahrez, Vardy, Willia, Payet, Alli?

Just saying... value and TV this year are redundant at the moment

I prefer a 3-4-3 with a 5th mid bench fodder. Last year I benched Kane's 18 points v Chelsea and this season I once benched Mahrez.

      3-5-2 never again.

It's a headache benching Ighalo too. There's no way around it...just better to have a good front 8 to cover injuries/surprise omissions. Sometimes you'll bench points, but it's better than having a designated 5th mid/3rd striker who's been bought not to play ever, on the basis that they're crap.

To avoid the headache of bench points, why is that even a headache? 6pts on the bench is no worse than 1pt on the bench from a player who is consistently crap.

        1. Reedy
          • 13 Years
          8 years, 4 months ago

Completely agree. The only headache comes in knowing who to bench each week...I called it wrong last week in benching Lukaku, a bad mistake in hindsight. But sometimes there really is no obvious candidate for the bench so these things will happen.

Alli had a very good fixture today though, Everton are very leaky at home as we saw Stoke put 4 past then last week.

Think all the points have been covered below, and this season with money not being so much of an issue having a power front 8 is easy to achieve so maybe there is no harm to it even if you bench points a lot.

Till now, this question was a bit irrelevant as many big hitters were not in consideration. So instead of having a bench fodder, we could afford to buy a decent and bench him - irrespective of his return

Now that Aguero/Costa/Kane look like good choices, I think we need to use our budget less lavishly. and hence, I am in favour of a bench fodder as my 5th Mid. Will be buying King or Watson very soon

      1. Reedy
        • 13 Years

It would need Sanchez to get back and firing for value to become important again to me, but I do have a cheap defence. Thing is, with Mahrez, Payet, Alli, Ighalo...I don't think the budget options are going to run out of steam any time soon.

Having a strong 5th mid like Alli also gets you price increases. Better than having a useless 5th mid that will always drop in price. I just thing the benifits in spending 0.5 more on a solid 5th mid like Alli far outweigh the negatives (are there any negatives really? bench points is a reality regardless)

I don't see much point in a 5th mid when your 4th and 5th defenders can be much more useful. If you pick your defenders well, your first sub can always be a defender with a good chance of getting returns.

In the last 3 gameweeks my first subs have been defenders and they've scored 8, 8, and 7.

In previous seasons and for the first half of this one I would have completely agreed with you. But with these two chips (BB and AoA), you need a good 5th mid to get anything out of them. Now while there is actually something to the idea of just never playing the AoA, surely you'd want to get the most out of BB. Add upcoming blanks (GW27 for starters, not that far away really, and Alli has SWA that week) and I think a good 5th mid like Alli will come in handy for plenty of the upcoming weeks.

Yeah, I'll be getting rid of Cattermole to make the most of the chips but in the past it's worked well. I'll definitely be investing in a better fifth mid soon.

If you get rid of Alli and put in a cheapie 5th, you're exactly as well off as if you benched Alli anyway.

Sure it sucks to bench points, but this way at least you have the option of rotation (eg. when KDB plays someone away from home), and a good backup when someone doesn't play.

    16. Biancazzurri
      • 11 Years
      8 years, 4 months ago

Once I traded Wijnaldum for Alli, as my boring 5th midfielder, I was glad getting rid of rotation headache.

But instantly I realised how much I miss that 'headache'. Because headache means choice and that can't be bad.

And now that Alli has scored scored, it all went back to headache-normal. It's all part of the fun.

This argument only really comes into effect when you are desperate for cash to fund expensive heavy hitters, and when the "too good" 5th mids you're referring to are quiye expensive. As things stand, for most people neither of these are an issue at the moment - alli does not cost that much more than your rubbish bench fodder

I have Alli, Lukaku, Mahrez, Ozil KDB..

Best to wait after cup games given Kun's injury profile, he might pick up a niggle and be ruled out against Everton, you don't wanna be caught with your pants down

Considering that 17 EPL teams are playing FA Cup matches next weekend and that the transfer window is open, I predict many who are making transfers before those games are completed will be cursing their bad luck and perhaps taking a hit, after the Cup matches.

And then there will be those who will be cursing their luck who waited as players gained and lost value, and missed opportunities to get a player they wanted due to price changes.

And then there are those who will have activated their WC.

Not sure yet which group I'll be joining.

The price changes were crazy fast over the short xmas fixture gaps. Hopefully they'll be a bit more reasonable in this long gap.

I think he was probably taken off as a precaution. He did go down once or twice, but I suspect they were just preserving him - he's got a while to get fit again for the next game anyway.
