As always on a Monday afternoon, we cast our eye over the main talking points from the weekend’s round of fixtures. Sergio Aguero’s imperious form, Dele Alli’s value in midfield, Roberto Firmino’s improving displays and Charlie Austin’s instant impact for Southampton all find their way onto our lunchtime menu.

Aguero is already close to essential status…
A brace against West Ham continued the City striker’s fine recent form as he took his tally to five goals and an assist in the last four Gameweeks. Aguero was neck-and-neck in our Captain Poll with Harry Kane and Romelu Lukaku over the last two rounds of fixtures but swept aside both their challenges, serving a clear reminder of his unparalleled capabilities to serve up explosive Fantasy hauls. In this sort of form, going without looks a reckless tactic – already, over 64,000 Fantasy Premier League (FPL) managers have snapped him up since the weekend as City prepare for a trip to Sunderland next Tuesday evening.

…and Alli has timed his ascent to coincide…
The Tottenham midfielder continues to offer outstanding value across the Fantasy games, courtesy of a goal and assist away to Palace. With the maximum bonus also thrown in, Alli’s 13-point haul was his highest of the season and took his tally to six goals and as many assists – he’s now up to 99 points, just six off Kevin De Bruyne in the midfield standings. At a price of just 5.7, Alli looks the ready-made enabler for those looking to free up cash in the centre of the park in order to accommodate Aguero.

Payet’s brilliance promises points…
Although the Frenchman drew a third blank in four since returning from injury at home to City last Saturday, there’s no question that Payet’s return has improved the Hammers’ potential. Slaven Bilic’s side have scored 32 times in the 16 matches Payet has been involved in, compared to five goals in seven league outings without him. With Villa, Norwich and Sunderland in the next four, Payet’s star is surely on the rise, despite his failure to deliver against Manuel Pellegrini’s men.

We’re willing Koeman to retain his formation…
It’s three wins and as many clean sheets for Southampton after they emerged from Old Trafford with a 1-0 victory. Ronald Koeman’s decision to roll out a 3-5-2 in recent weeks has proved the catalyst for this turnaround as the Saints arrested a dire run of form. With the schedule turning in their favour from Gameweek 25, Koeman’s charges are edging back onto our radars again, with the 3.8-priced Matt Targett looking a ready-made enabler since being handed the left wing-back berth in Gameweek 21.

Austin hasn’t lost the knack…
Eased into action off the bench after a recent hamstring injury for QPR, the Saints’ new signing wasted no time in getting amongst the points. On as a sub for the ineffectual Sadio Mane, Austin needed just eight minutes to bag the winner, serving a timely reminder of the talent that scored 18 times for the relegated Hoops last season. At a price of 7.0 in FPL, he’s already thrown his hat into the ring as a mid-price option for our three-man frontlines.

Firmino’s flair is fitting in…
Two goals and an assist in Liverpool’s stunning 5-4 win at Norwich has sparked a major bandwagon for the Brazilian. With Christian Benteke back on the bench, Firmino looks to have established himself as Jurgen Klopp’s preferred central option in the Reds’ front three, with an 18-point Carrow Road return his third double-figure haul in 11 starts under the German. Over 80,000 FPL managers have been quick to acquire his services – more than any other player – ahead of a kind looking schedule from Gameweek 25 onwards.

Vardy and Mahrez aren’t done yet…
A 3-0 win over Stoke suggests that Leicester’s temporary blip could be behind them. Riyad Mahrez and Jamie Vardy have been subject to significant recent sales but both got amongst the points this weekend, courtesy of an assist and goal respectively. With Vardy edging back towards full fitness following recent groin surgery, the Foxes’ main men could continue to punish those former owners as Claudio Ranieri’s men look to strengthen their spot at the summit.

Van Aanholt needs defensive reinforcements…
The Sunderland left-back maintained his incredible attacking form by finding the net for the fourth successive Gameweek. Handed license to raid forward by Big Sam, Van Aanholt’s nine-point haul against Bournemouth means he has now averaged 5.3 points per appearance since the new manager was appointed – that’s despite the Black Cats’ failure to keep a single clean sheet since Gameweek 14. If Allardyce’s side can step up their resilience, Van Aanholt could become increasingly difficult to ignore.

Pulis will prioritise safety over goals….
Prior to the goalless draw against Villa, the Baggies boss reiterated that his sole concern is to reach the magic 40-point mark and ensure his side’s survival. Whilst they failed to get the better of their Midlands rivals, the 0-0 stalemate means that West Brom have conceded just once in their last three home matches and are now just 12 points from Pulis’ points target. As he looks to grind out the results in order to ensure safety, clean sheets could be on the cards once again.

Guidolin may just revive Ayew…
The Ghana international kicked off his career under Francesco Guidolin with a goal and assist away to Everton as the Swans chalked up a much-needed win on their travels. Put into perspective, Ayew had produced just a single away goal (at Villa in Gameweek 10) since the season opener at Chelsea, with the vast majority of his points arriving at the Liberty. Now up to joint-fourth in the midfield standings, he was fielded up front once again at Goodison as the new man in charge retained a midfield diamond, suggesting he could prove the main beneficiary of the Italian’s appointment.

Costa’s goals and fitness are back on the agenda…
The Chelsea striker once again proved the undoing of Arsenal by grabbing the only goal of yesterday’s head-to-head at the Emirates. It’s five strikes and two assists in just five league outings under Guus Hiddink for Costa, who seems to have belatedly rediscovered his attacking potential in what has been a thoroughly underwhelming second season in the Premier League. Once again, though, Costa’s propensity for picking up injuries saw him forced off on 67 minutes with a knee problem – for all his improvement, though, those knock and niggles, allied with his penchant for incurring the referee’s wrath, is likely to keep him on the Fantasy periphery.

Agreed, certainly you can't replicate actually watching a match, great as stats are. Everton have been a prime example of this, and showed it again at the weekend. The shots conceded stats won't show just how bad we are defensively, that can only be seen in all its horrid glory with one's own eyes - the penalty concession being an excruciating example.

At the other end of the pitch, Deulofeu's fantastic deliveries will show as misplaced passes (a common theme for him this season). The stats will possibly show his MOTM performance as an off game.

Doosra doesn't rate him at all. Anyway, I wasn't saying that Deulofeu is underrated, my point was that stats can be deceiving - those fantastic crosses will show as misplaced. Similarly, a screamer from 30 yards that hits the bar will show as a shot off target, while a miskick from 6 yards that rolls to the keeper will be a shot on target.

One of the things about fantasy football is that a great player doesnt necessarily make a great fantasy option. Modric when at Spurs was a great example.

He was the heartbeat of the team, everything went through him and he was the most important player too, nailed on, in a high scoring team. But he never got the goals/assists to make him a viable purchase.

Similarly you get players that are not great players but great fantasy options eg. Charlie Adam at Blackpool.

Impossible to watch 90mins all matches and no one's brain is a computer

watching highlights just biases the information

watching a nutmeg on MOTD which leads to a goal, doesn't represent the other 89 minutes and 50 seconds of the match, of that players performance

Stats are at least objective, it's just whether you know how to use them

        • 13 Years
        9 years, 10 months ago

Exactly. I agree with you. I am just saying watching players perform with your own eyes need to be weighted lot more than just looking at various numbers and forming opinion like you really know the player.

Butland owners urged to start panicking.

For those with Butland I’d advise ensuring you have another good playing goalkeeper while Shawcross is out.

I’ve just crunched some numbers and Shawcross’s absence is set to seriously dent Butland’s points return.

    Here’s how it breaks down

Shawcross was absent for Gameweeks 1-10.

    During that time Butland earned:

    - 2 clean sheets. That’s a rate of 20%
    - PPG of 3.8
    - Save average per game 4.1
    - Bonus 2… per game average of 0.2

Shawcross comes back in Gameweek 11 to Gwk 23 and Butland’s points potential increases markedly

    - 7 clean sheets. That’s a rate of 53%.
    - PPG of 5.3
    - Saves 3.1
    - Bonus 10…per game average of 0.76.

Its clear that without Shawcross Butland has to work harder, as seen by more saves. But he is not getting rewarded for that in FPL points, especially bonus. The lack of clean sheets by Shawcross’s absence is a real blow to his points potential.

On the plus side the huge decrease in clean sheet potential means that Stoke are a great source of points for your attackers from other teams.

Here’s the next five (likely Shawcross absence) - mun EVE bou AVL NEW

So owners of Rooney, Lukaku, Cherries bargain attackers, Magpies pair Mitrovic and Wijnaldum and even Villa attackers (not sure if anyone does own them) ought to play them those weeks.

Also given Butland owners can now expect in the region of 3.8 ppg, lets see who offers value as a back up while Shawcross is out.

Early days but Bunn is excelling in the Villa goal. His PPG is 7.3
So too Foster, although very early days there. PPG - although only one game - is 7

If you have the cash Cech at 4.6 ppg and DDG at 4.2 ppg offer more, so too Gomes - also 4.2 ppg.

The rest offer only the same or less level of points per game.

PPG of 3.8 from a £4.5 GK with their best defender out isn't too bad to be fair

Don't think money - think points. He is only getting turning up points and possible a save point or two maximum. With Shawcross he was getting a clean sheet every other game and bonus in three out of four games. How many of us have had a gameweek saved by one of Butland's hauls. They've gone now for a month so time to see which other goalkeepers can serve us.

Wollscheid only played 45 minutes in game-weeks 1-6. During that time Butland earned:
      - No clean sheets.
      - PPG of 3.7 (but without the assist and the bonus points that it earned it would only have been 2.8)
      - Save average per game 5.0
      - Bonus 2 (for an assist)

Wollscheid came back in game-week 7 and in game-weeks 7-10 (before Shawcross returned) and 23 (in which Shawcross only played 29 minutes), Butland earned:
      - 2 clean sheets (but they were at Villa and Swansea). That’s a rate of 40%.
      - PPG of 3.6
      - Saves average per game 2.4
      - Bonus 0.

Shawcross came back in game-week. In game-weeks 11-22, Butland earned:
      - 7 clean sheets. That’s a rate of 58%.
      - PPG of 5.75
      - Saves average per game 3.3
      - Bonus 10…per game average of 0.83.

Apart from his assist, Butland only gets bonus points when he keeps a clean sheet and also makes at least 4 saves.
He is likely to get fewer clean sheets in Shawcross's absence, but with Wollscheid still present his PPG may not regress to what it would have been in GWs 1-6 without the assist.

...In game-weeks 11-22 excluding GW 14 (when Shawcross received a red card after 46 minutes), Butland earned:
        - 7 clean sheets. That’s a rate of 64%.
        - PPG of 6.1
        - Saves average per game 3.4
        - Bonus 10…per game average of 0.91.

I've never been a fan of him, was extremely sceptical at his appointment, and while I was eating my words at times in his 1st season, it was all built on the foundation that Moyes had built. That foundation is eroding, and we are now basically a rich man's Wigan. This is the best squad we have had in my lifetime, and we are underachieving MASSIVELY. He's not sorted out any of the issues we had last season, in fact they're worsening.

Also, I dislike the revisionism that we're now playing like Barcelona while under Moyes we were turgid. Some of the stuff we played in Moyes' last few years was as good as under Martinez.

I'm fed up with him, if we lose this wednesday I'd be happy to see him sacked and just have Unsworth take over till the end of the season.

Although I'm not sure who we could get to replace him, possibly Eddie Howe?

For what it's worth, I think Carrick has been quite poor this season. It's no surprise that Man U are ponderous on the ball and lack any vim and vigour when we look to pair Schweini (31) and Carrick (34) in the centre where possible. Not questioning his passing ability of course.

No way would I include him in a Arsenal/United joint XI.

I'm a United fan and I do watch football (in fact I've been to OT on a number of occasions this season for my sins).

I didn't have to gut my team, but I did sell Mahrez to fund Aguero. Wondering how much that's going to bite me.

      Özil KDB Payet Alli Gosling
      Aguero Lukaku Kane

I think its too late for firmino, hes had 2 amazing weeks, he will drop down now. If i were you I would wait for Coutinho to come back from injury and then get him instead. His price has dropped to 8.0, i think the same as firmino

Might need to start looking at KDB+Ozil replacements, so easy to get Mahrez back in if he's out-performing them.

Which 2 defenders would you start from this lot if AOA? Lets just assume Rangel starts. It is risky if I play him though because he always comes on with a couple of minutes to go:

        A) Nyom (CHE)
        B) Moreno (lei)
        C) Rangel (wba)
        D) Bellerin (SOU)
        E) Evans (SWA)

Currently on C & E but would be tempted to play C over E.

I would say A and C, swansea are in decent form both defensively and in front of goal so E) could backfire. I think A) could pay off as Watford seem to do well against better teams

I am playing AOA and currently benching C, playing DE. I would start C if he was 100% guaranteed to start but if he doesn't he comes on in the last few minutes. Would drive me mad.

What do you think of the team?

          Hennessey
          Bellerin - Alderweireld - Cresswell
          Özil - Alli - Payet - KDB
          Kane - Aguero - Ighalo

Subs: Butland, Willian, Fuchs and Targett

          1FT and £ 0.3 transfer budget.

Who to play, Mahrez or Ighalo for the next game week...? Swaying towards Ighalo but still have the inkling I should play Mahrez

          Butland
          Alderweireld/Dawson/Bellerín
          Payet/De Bruyne/Özil/Alli
          Ighalo/Lukaku/Agüero

Ighalo is against an in form Chelsea side who havent conceded many goals. I would play Mahrez as Leicester are playing attacking football again and are coming up against a side full of defensive injuries, the problems showed for Liverpool conceding 4 goals against Norwich, the most they have scored this season

Ha alright, point taken, but seriously - holding up a shirt for the man driving one of the most deprived areas in the country into further poverty? Jagielka is the captain of a team supported, largely, by members of a disadvantaged community being crushed by that man - he may as well be erecting a Thatcher banner in the Street end.
