Injuries

The Treatment Table – Gameweek 26

John Terry limps off during Chelsea’s 5-1 home rout over Newcastle. Arsenal centre-halves Gabriel and Laurent Koscielny are both injury concerns, whilst Man United and Stoke’s problems in defence intensify.

Arsenal
Arsene Wenger has concerns in central defence after Laurent Koscielny was replaced at the break against Leicester City because of a dead leg. Gabriel Paulista missed out on a third straight start alongside the Frenchman after sustaining a “slight hamstring injury” he picked up during training.

Gabriel’s influence alongside Koscielny had earned the Gunners back-to-back clean sheets prior to yesterday’s 2-1 win over Leicester. Priced at a mere 4.3 in FPL, the Brazilian had arrived on our Fantasy radars as a cut-price route into Wenger’s defence, given that Nacho Monreal, at 5.9, is the cheapest of Arsenal’s other starters. Arsenal are braced for a superb run of home fixtures from this point onwards that could well see many jump aboard the Gabriel bandwagon, providing he recovers in time to force Mertesacker down the pecking order once again.

Aston Villa
Remi Garde confirmed that Gabriel Agbonlahor was replaced at the 58-minute mark at Villa Park after suffering from vertigo:

“I don’t know the extent exactly. I have been told he is suffering with vertigo. He didn’t feel well. He had a headache.”

Chelsea
Blues skipper John Terry was withdrawn early on during a 5-1 home hammering of Newcastle on Saturday evening. With a Champions League clash against Paris Saint-Germain tomorrow night and FA Cup encounter with Man City next weekend, Guus Hiddink went on to say:

“We are coming up to two big games, we’ll see what is the damage tomorrow after such an intense game. Two days [of rest] isn’t enough we’d like to have three games, but it’s good we won. Tomorrow will be an examination of John Terry, who has a small muscular problem. It was in his hamstring but tomorrow there will be a scan and then we’ll know more. We can say more tomorrow but it’s difficult because we have a big game next week. We must take a wise decision in terms of Tuesday and next weekend.

Similarly, Oscar is expected to recover from the calf complaint that prevented him from featuring against the Magpies.

Indeed, reports earlier today reports indicate that both Terry and Oscar have trained ahead of the trip to France. Chelsea have since confirmed, though, that Terry has failed to make the squad to face PSG, though Oscar has been passed fit and included.

Crystal Palace
Alan Pardew revealed that Yannick Bolasie and Bakary Sako will join the Crystal Palace squad on a trip to Spain this week, priming them for a return to action against Spurs in next weekend’s FA Cup action:

“I think he [Bolasie] will be in and around the team next week and Sako. They’re both important players for us.”

Bolasie’s return could well spark the Eagles attack back into life after some dire displays in the final third. Pardew shifted Connor Wickham onto the flank at home to Watford last weekend but with Bolasie and Sako closing in on returns, the former Sunderland man looks likely to drop back down to the bench. This would allow Adebayor – who notched the hosts’ only goal in a 2-1 defeat – continue as the lone striker in a 4-2-3-1 set-up once again.

Liverpool
Speaking on Daniel Sturridge’s first start since Gameweek 8, Jurgen Klopp said that the former Chelsea frontman was replaced after an hour as a precautionary measure and not because of a niggle:

“You saw he was not too happy when we took him off! Everything was okay but it was not like he gave a sign or something like this, but I think it made sense to take him out after 60 minutes. It was perfect for him and hopefully he’s available for the next game too.”

Pitched at 9.9, Sturridge certainly piques our interest by way of his clinical nature and capacity for explosive returns. Looking beyond the Reds’ blank next Gameweek, they play host to Manchester City in Gameweek 28 and potentially face a blank in Gameweek 30 (in the event that Chelsea overcome the Sky Blues in the FA Cup), which tempers Sturridge’s immediate appeal. Assuming Liverpool’s home clash against Chelsea isn’t rescheduled, many Fantasy managers will be tempted to source coverage for attack that chalked up 13 goals in their past four match-ups.

Elsewhere in the Merseysiders’ camp, Adam Lallana (calf) and Lucas Leiva (hamstring) were both omitted from the squad with minor complaints.

Manchester United
Louis van Gaal expressed frustration at the fact that Matteo Darmian faces several weeks on the sidelines following a heavy fall that dislocated his shoulder at the Stadium of Light:

“It is unbelievable; it is a dislocation so he will be out for several weeks. We do not have many more full-backs, not even in the [youth] system. Donald Love has played today at right-back and he did it well.”

Stoke City
Stoke City’s defensive concerns intensified on the weekend, with Marc Muniesa (hamstring) and Glen Johnson (knee) both leaving the field of play. Although Mark Hughes believes the former could feature against Aston Villa next Gameweek, he’s less optimistic about Johnson’s chances:

“Marc felt his hamstring but we’re hoping it’s nothing too serious. We’ve obviously got a break now and hopefully it will only be a 10 to 14 day lay-off. Glen is a little bit more of a concern. Philipp Wollscheid fell on him – he thought he might be ok to continue but that wasn’t the case.”

On the attacking front, Marko Arnautovic missed out through illness. The Austrian winger has shed owners in light of a five-match goalless streak, but could invite investment prior to Stoke’s upcoming pair of favourable home encounters against Villa and Newcastle. Further bolstering his allure, the Potters are guaranteed a fixture in Gameweek 30 (at home to Southampton) and face just one road trip (away to Chelsea) across the next four Gameweeks.

Sunderland
Sam Allardyce is hopeful that Jan Kirchhoff – who lasted just 15 minutes against Manchester United before succumbing to a hamstring complaint – will heal up during Sunderland’s fortnight off:

“The break has come at a good time because of the injuries. Lens has just had a hernia op. There’s Kaboul, Watmore and obviously Kirchhoff, who came off injured. Two weeks gives us a great opportunity to get people fit. Seb Larsson is making his way back.”

At the other end of the pitch, Jermain Defoe was substituted at the 70-minute mark to avoid a recurrence of a hamstring injury:

“He’ll be alright because we protected him by making sure we brought him off. Fatigue kicks in in the last 10 or 15 minutes and if you’ve had a fitness test on a hamstring, the last thing we wanted was him pulling up and being out for three or four weeks.”

Watford
Jurado was absent for Watford’s 2-1 win at Crystal Palace because of a calf injury.

West Ham
Enner Valencia was withdrawn just after the hour-mark during West Ham’s 2-2 draw at Norwich due to injury, according to match reports.

Just did Moreno to Huth. Please tell me I haven't made a massive mistake and should have went for Fuchs instead. Just been on a 4 day rugby trip in Wales and my brain may still be scrambled 🙂

My reasoning, before coming on here, was that he is more of a goal threat. Yes Fuchs takes corners but Huth could easily be on the end of those plus 0.3M cheaper which could come in handy.

I know everyone will say Fuchs but I dont see much between them tbh.

Price is the difference. If you see your budget being tight towards the end of the season, then Huth is the right choice.

I know it will divide opinions but I seriously think those sort of things are disrespectful. Imagine if you were on the opposite team. The keeper look totally humiliated. With that being said I don't feel that strongly about it but do think there was no need.

I can't imagine feeling more humiliated for the opponent scoring against me a beautiful goal taking creativity and skill, rather than an ugly goal that takes nothing but my failure. I have never quite understood that attitude.

              1. Worzel Gummidge
                  8 years, 2 months ago

It is rather simple to understand, I think, if I have understood what you have typed (not going to lie and say I understand what you are trying to say though :)). People react differently to different situations based no where they fit into that situation as well as their own personality. That is how human nature works. My PERSONAL opinion is that it is 'slightly' disrespectful but I don't care that much to not admit it was a good goal. I thought it was good since we don't see it very often for obvious reasons so I was surprised. My opinion is that it really can't be that difficult but it is certainly more difficult than a simple shot as it adds additional points of failure. You may have a varying difference of opinion but that is because you are someone else.

They fecking showboated when it was 0-0. It's because they actually did have to do their fancy trickery to get past the defenders, and so they did.

Neymar's flick wasn't just showboating, it was an ingenious way to create space where there appeared to be none.

                      Showboating versus Atheltico last year.

                      Very heated reaction.

                      That's how it goes.

                        And it wasn't justified...

If you're Atletico and you think Neymar has chosen to do a skill that is sub optimal, you should be pleased that he's made the wrong choice.

If Neymar has in fact done something very technically difficult that was better than his other options, he should be applauded.

In either case, a footballer has a right to choose how to play the game, so long as it is not dishonest and within the rules.

Whenever I've been made a **** out of on a football or hockey field I don't think I've ever felt disrespected by the other player. Maybe disappointed in myself that I let him get one over on me, but afterwards I appreciate how good they were with a 'yeah well done mate'. The only time I feel disrespected is if they've intentionally cheated. That doesn't fall into this bracket.

I was playing in goal for a team once and we were 13 goals up at HT so I said if we get a penalty let me take it.

About 15 minutes later we got one. I ran up the pitch to take it, absolutely scuffed the shot but it still went in. Now that is taking the mick! 🙂

It's nothing new. Johan Cruyff did the same in 1982. Arsenal attempted one too in 2005 but completely messed it up and failed to score.

Danny Blanchflower had recommended it as a trick penalty many years earlier (about 1960), and said that Spurs had used it once after they had missed a few normal penalties and lost confidence in taking them. But they spoke to the ref first to explain what they were about to do, so that the ref wouldn't be taken by surprise and disallow it.

However, the ref and assistant should have been watching out for encroachment, and disallowed it if there was any doubt.

The Cruyff penalty was the most spectacular since it involved two passes, but the defenders should have been much quicker in running into the area, because they might have needed to clear the ball before any attackers got to it if it had rebounded from the goalkeeper or the goalpost.

But any penalty in which the penalty-taker chooses to pass the ball instead of shooting directly is certainly unusual.

Cheeky is not the word. I would call it innovative (albeit its been done before)

Fans always want to see unique goals.

If that is disrespectful I would argue the panenka is worse or even when teams try to win 10 - 0 when the opposition is down to 9 men.

The opposition coach said he didn't have a problem with it.

Let's just say that messi had the ball on the penalty spot in exactly the same position but not as a penalty.

He then does the same and Suarez scores. It's not classed as disrespectful then, more unselfish teamwork.

It's the same boat as tricks and skills. It's what makes the game great and not disrespectful at all, just entertaining.

Beating Villa 6-0 at villa park is disrespectful if that's the case.

It is nothing like having the ball on the penalty spot in open play. A penalty kick has a definite intention within the rules and what Messi did is not how a penalty is intended. I don't think it's illegal or disrespectful, but I do think it goes against the spirit of the rules and the way the game is meant to be played.

Who says it's how penalties are intended? Players over the years have decided it's he best way to score but that doesn't mean it's the intention.

That's like saying free kicks from just outside the box that aren't a shot on target are against the principles of the free kick. A nicely worked passing routine from a free kick would receive high praise especially if everyone was expecting a straight shot.

Entertainment the name of the game and it gave it.

If it was against football morales it should be made a law that it can't be done. Until then it's cheeky, but valid and good entertainment.

I disagree about free kicks because a free kick is exactly that - a kick without interference from the opposition. What Messi did was take advantage of the goalie anticipating what a penalty is and therefore anticipating that he would have to try and block a direct shot - the odds of a save are already stacked against the goalie and I think this sort of play makes it nigh on impossible for the keeper. It stacks the odds too much in the penalty takers favour in a way that the penalty kick isn't designed to do. A simple adjustment of the rules to say the ball must go beyond the 6-yard box with a single touch of the ball would prevent it.

I think it exploited a loophole in the rules in effect as a penalty kick is quite blatantly meant to be direct and just because the rules don't explicitly outlaw what Barca did doesn't make it right or sporting to do so.

I'm not sure if it's disrespectful, but I would say it is unsporting as it goes against the spirit of the rules. While technically legal, it is not what a penalty kick is designed to be. I would liken it to in rugby a player pointing to the posts but then kicking it towards the touch line on purpose for their own player to catch for a try - technically legal but unsporting.

I thought penalties should be direct shot.
I know before they used to take penalties like that but I thought it was no longer allowed, since the advent of Direct/Indirect freekick.

It is highly disrespectful. It's terrible what some players try to do to fool the poor goalie. I hope they get life bans for this. The poor goalie is expecting a penalty and that is what he should receive.

Likewise, I want to see life bans and community work handed out to players who:

              - try to score from kick off
              - try to score direct from a corner
              - try to swerve a ball around a wall
              - fake to shoot and then pass it to another player or even worse,
              - players who fake to shoot and then dribble around the poor goalie

Yes, life ban the lot of them. How dare they disrespect the poor goalie. It makes me so cross that I'm going to write a letter about it and begin a campaign to out any footballer who tries these things.

              Such disrespect. 😡

The most interesting comment I read on this debate was something like "imagine if it was Ronaldo and Benzema did that, the uproar it would cause". I think that's bang on. It was disrespectful. It's just because Messi has a good-boy lovable image (even though he diddles his taxes) that Barca get away with it without too much criticism.

I went for Huth. More of a goal threat and 0.3M cheaper which could come in handy.

Yes sorry meant Huth (Morgan Freudian typing slip... don't want to read too much into that) If unsure I agree it makes sense to go for the cheaper option.

Sometimes pen takers look a right old tube doing it the normal way. It's not the sole preserve of doing something different.

Nah. Just the fact that they might is enough to cast doubt in the keepers mind. That's what I mean by being surprised it's not used more often.

If Barca did it again next time then any keeper facing a pen against them after that is a bit stuffed as to what to expect. It's a good ploy.

i am waiting because i have kun and lukaku. if kun gets injured i'll swap him out. if everton go out of the cup, they play gw30 so i'll want to keep lukaku and get a better 5th midfielder. too many ifs and buts to worry about a .1 or .2 rise which at this stage of the season is getting irrelevant

Interesting. Well, of course that's easy if you are allowed to break the rules. Cruyff needed the full surprise element on his day, the defenders just didn't run to stop them scoring. Had they run in the box too, there's a good likelihood they had not scored it.

rules are broken often in football - as mentioned earlier - do you complain every time a striker scores a penalty when the keeper was off his line?

Nothing to complain about if the goalkeeper failed to save it despite being off his line.

But strictly speaking, the penalty ought to be retaken if the goalkeeper was off his line and then saved it.

it's all relative. suarez always cheats so this was fairly normal and therefore perfectly legal.

                or something

Suarez sometimes cheated, but not always. Refs stopped awarding Liverpool penalties after a few instances when he had got a reputation for going down too easily, despite the fact that in most cases he had genuinely been fouled. It was only after he stopped going down and started making superhuman attempts to stay on his feet that they started awarding Liverpool penalties again.

Given the right circumstances, GW30 could be a great time for a faux wildcard, right? Keep a couple of transfers up your cuff and you could really transform your team for zero cost if one or two of your new players cut the mustard that weekend. Every hit will effectively only be a -2 and if you made six transfers all it would require would be a clean sheet and a goal to balance the books. (note: works best if you've still got a real wildcard stashed away!).

Im one of those that likes to take chances and hits if I can bring in players on form with good GWs ahead.

Ahead of GW30 if you lets say take 3 hits-12p and bring in 3 players where 1 scores, I clean sheet and 1 blanks you can easly get 15-16 points. Now you wont earn so much but you wil have a stronger squad for the next games after that too. Someone woud argue that later you have to bring back players you first sold, but if you have poor players or players out of form taking hits wil pay of.

                Its all about probability. 🙂

you just have to make sure you dont leave your team in a mess for the following gw's

you wont want to use your wildcard to rescue that, you will want that for the dgw's, where the same will be true about not ripping your team up for the following weeks. unless its gw37 in which case it wont matter so much

I keep looking for chinks. Started with five at the back this week and Costa captain.

Sadly it was a week for port defensive returns and Cost's nose was enough to put me off the idea and switch to Lolaku.

You have 14 days to next GW. You can make 1 change now if you want and use the other later. Dont forget that you have champions league, UEFA cup and FA cup between now and the next GW. Injuries can easly happen.

Are you still sure on both Ozil and Sanchez? Starting to think Sanchez is a waste of money myself and plays United and Spurs away in the next 3.

The thing is Whazza, Sanchez is one of those players that when he scores, he scores big. Games against United and Spurs is likely to give him a real burst of confidence, especially if they get hammered by Barcelona.

                        this ^^
He scored 2 against us earlier in the season and racked up a score of 16 - Sanchez has never been a consistent source of points like Ozil is, but you want to have him for his big hauls

That's the problem, he isn't scoring. So we should get him in when he goes on a run. I thought he had started a run in the cup fixture, but 3-4 blanks after that...

I've had him a few weeks now and I'm less than convinced if I'm honest but still feel he'll hit some form by the end of the season. His remaining home games are pretty good - Swansea, West Brom, Watford, Crystal Palace, Norwich, Villa

That's some nice fixtures, but looking at the next 3 I think there are better alternatives for half his price.

                  Ighalo + Simpson + Firmino --> Vardy + Fuchs + Arnautovic (-4)

                  Kane / Vardy

                  Henneysey / Daniels / Nyom / Aguero

Not sure whether to play Daniels or Hoolahan?

                  Cheers

I woud think about how big potensial do they have to generate points in the next GW. How big scoring treat is Hoolahan? If he does not score but hes team keeps clean sheet he can get 3 points. Daniels on the other hand can get 6p if clean sheet, he takes penalties and has assists from time to time.

I would at least consider which keeper should start. Not sure if DDG should necessarily be considered the obvious choice at least.

The bookies slightly agree with starting DDG though.

Hoolahan could be good although I don't fancy him

Really hoping Cabaye can come good soon. He's been so close so often (woodwork again this weekend). Bolasie Adebayor and Dann can surely start to convert some pts for him soon can't they?

                    There's a reason I haven't seen Cabaye's name on here in months

He's a good pick for UFPL if the team does ok. Pts for chances created, key passes as well as assists and recoveries. All he needs is somebody to feed. ...anybody....

But that's just it. The team is NOT doing OK.

No accident that they fell off a cliff as soon as Bolasie was injured.

Bolasie and Sako are both flying out to the training camp and should be ready...Adebayor remains a decent enough striker.

It's DePardieu. Not Bolasie, poor chap.

                  Bellerin Toby Targett Dann (Simpson->Fuchs)

                  Alli Payet Mahrez (Firmino->Arnie)

                  Kane

Maybe consider just waiting on Simpson to return. FT's are valuable atm, so maybe a 1 game ban should just be waited out

Anyone know what they did wrong, or is it all a mistake? Is Smartypants around?

Is it likely to come back soon, possibly with some changes?
