FA Cup Scout Notes – Fifth Round – Sunday

Dimitri Payet and Emmanuel Emenike both score twice as West Ham ease past Blackburn. Eden Hazard provides a goal and two assists as Chelsea crush an under-strength Man City, whilst Martin Kelly fires Palace into the last eight at Tottenham’s expense.

Payet at the double

Dimitri Payet scored two spectacular goals and grabbed an assist as West Ham United dished out a 5-1 thrashing to Blackburn Rovers at Ewood Park. Allied with his 13-point haul last Gameweek, the 8.2-priced midfielder is in fine form ahead of a favourable home clash against Sunderland. That being said, Watford’s triumph over Leeds on Saturday already ensured that the Hornets’ visit to the Boleyn Ground in Gameweek 30 will be postponed, diminishing Payet’s appeal on the Fantasy market – nonetheless, more than 69,000 Fantasy Premier League (FPL) managers have snapped up the Frenchman ahead of the Black Cats showdown.

Emmanuel Emenike also bagged a brace in his maiden start for the Hammers – given that Enner Valencia (ankle) and Andy Carroll (hip) are nursing knocks, the Nigerian marksman, who is priced at 5.0 in FPL, is likely to lead the line against the Black Cats.

In the wake of an impactful cameo against Norwich City last time out, Victor Moses opened the scoring with a drilled strike. If the fit-again Manuel Lanzini – who was deployed in the 67th minute and went on to card an assist – is handed a starting role next time out, Moses and Michail Antonio look set to compete for a wide berth in Slaven Bilic’s preferred 4-2-3-1 set-up. Antonio filled in at right-back against Blackburn as Joey O’Brien and James Tomkins are injured and Sam Byram is cup-tied, having previously played for Leeds in an earlier round.

Cheikhou Kouyate received his marching orders for denying a goal scoring opportunity, ruling him out of the Sunderland encounter. However, Bilic confirmed post-match that he intends to appeal the decision and believes the Irons can present a strong case.

Spurs slip to defeat

Tottenham Hotspur succumbed to a 1-0 home loss at the hands of Crystal Palace. Mauricio Pochettino shuffled the starting XI following their draw at Fiorentina earlier in the week, dropping Toby Alderweireld and Christian Eriksen to the bench.

On the injury front, Hugo Lloris remained sidelined with the shoulder complaint he sustained against Manchester City, while Mousa Dembele was withdrawn at the break with a minor groin problem. Spurs’ last two defeats arrived when the ex-Fulham recruit was hamstrung by injury, so investors in their offense will be hopeful of a swift recovery.

As a consequence of Spurs’ exit from the FA Cup, their road tie against Aston Villa in Gameweek 30 will go ahead as planned. Given that Harry Kane (41% ownership), Alderweireld (42%) and Dele Alli (31%) are among the most popular Fantasy recruits, many managers will find it far easier to cobble together a full team in three weeks’ time.

Kelly wins it for Palace

Martin Kelly steered the Eagles into the quarter finals with a thunderous effort. Wilfried Zaha – who notched two assists in his previous four league starts and netted the winner against Stoke in the Fourth Round – underlined his good form with the assist. Valued at 5.3, the fleet-footed winger could well factor into our thinking for future double Gameweeks.

Yannick Bolasie made a second-half cameo, priming him for a return to league action at West Bromwich Albion next weekend. Nonetheless, his differential potential is curtailed by the fact that Palace’s trip to Manchester United in Gameweek 30 is set to be rescheduled in response to their win over Spurs. On that note, the ownerships of Scott Dann (23%), Chris Smalling (25%) and David De Gea (11%) face the prospect of benching considerable funds during the blank.

Hazard steers Blues to victory

Chelsea put Manchester City to the sword in a 5-1 win at Stamford Bridge. Eden Hazard showed shoots of recovery with a goal and pair of assists, while Diego Costa complemented his assist against Paris Saint-Germain with a goal on Sunday afternoon. Willian, Gary Cahill and Bertrand Traore also graced the scoresheet, with Oscar claiming an assist.

Speaking of Oscar, the Brazil international came up short from the penalty spot for the second time this term, perhaps giving Guus Hiddink food for thought with regards to the Chelsea spot-kick pecking order.

Chelsea’s passage through to the last eight of the FA Cup results in the postponement of their road clash against Liverpool in Gameweek 30. From the Blues’ perspective, Willian is the second-most popular midfielder with regards to transfers in (57,000) this week, while Costa (46,000) is the third-most popular forward, which throws up a dilemma for those new owners. Moreover, Cesar Azpilicueta’s 14% ownership might need to do some tinkering ahead of that date.

The postponement of Chelsea’s clash with Liverpool means that the latter – like Everton – play just twice over the next four Gameweeks. Considering that one of those match-ups is a visit from Manchester City, Roberto Firmino’s 17% ownership will likely be exploring other avenues. On the flip side, both Merseyside clubs will now enjoy two double Gameweeks at some point down the line, which encourages us to keep tabs on the likes of Daniel Sturridge and Philippe Coutinho following their return from the treatment room.

Pellegrini rings the changes as City tumble out

Manuel Pellegrini made nine alterations for the Sky Blues’ trip to the capital, ensuring that his first team are well rested for the first leg of their Champions League match-up against Dinamo Kiev on Wednesday.

The likes of Sergio Aguero, David Silva, Yaya Toure and Vincent Kompany all played no part as the Chilean handed five debutants a chance to impress at the Bridge.

Ultimately, City’s defeat to Chelsea means that their trip to Norwich City in Gameweek 30 remains intact. This will be music to the ears of Aguero’s 30% ownership and may persuade many to hold now – a win for City yesterday would have handed Aguero two blanks in the next four, bearing in mind he already misses out this upcoming weekend due to City’s Capital One Cup final clash with Liverpool.

Well in this defense, do we think shipping Ivanovic is the sensible move this GW or not? Also, any changes to the starting lineup would be great.

    Butland (elliot)
Alder Huth Cresswell (Ivanovic , Bellerin)

I will be shipping Cresswell next week for either VvD or Daniels depending on who i bring in this gw.

    2 FT and 4.9itb.

Not sure if West Ham will keep a cleanie vs Sunderland, but Cresswell could bomb forward so yeah keep him this week.

      Ivan out, VvD in 🙂

Keep Ivan. I'd much rather lose Bellers. One of the most inform teams in the country. Great differential. Definite must have in GW34.

Well Bellerin has decent fixtures, not sure i want to keep Ivan if JT is back and he keeps his place as a CB. Makes absolutely no sense to keep him, rather have Azpi. GW 34 is waaaay ahead to keep a player 6.6 for if he snt going to play much.

Mahrez makes more sense against Norwich style defending IMO.

Vardy won't have the space to run behind by Mahrez can put his flair to good use

    BOTTOMED...

Another argument to WC GW 36 and BB GW 37 is this:

You can get rid of your Leicester players with a smaller risk.

    Leicester
    36 mau
    37 EVE
    38 che

These 3 fixtures doesn't really spell massive hauls for Vahrez and a possible defender. Would really hate to loose the 3 Leicester boys already from GW 33.

At the same time Spurs will have

    36 che
    37 SOU
    38 new

The same can in some way be said about Spurs (IF they won't have DGW 37. You will probably not loose out on a lot of points in 36. 37 could be a little bit tricky with Soton's defence and you could use you FT GW 38 to get in Kane/Eriksen/Alli.

How much would you be factoring in the fact that when WC'ing for your BB DGW, you will have to get rid of valuable SGW players.

Not set on anything yet, but this + that you will have time to get in a decent team for DGW 34 without WC will probably persuade me to TC in DGW 34 and BB in DGW 37.

    Thought? Am I crazy?

Agreed. So you wouldn't have 15 DGW players in GW 34, but would be "easier" to have in GW 37.

Yup, I might lose the Leicester defender (Fuchs) but Mahrez + Vardy aren't leaving my team until GW38 if even. I fancy them to do as well as some DGW options against EVE

I agree, you are controlling your risk a lot better. 5GW including GW33 and after GW34 with a team set up for a BB play could easily backfire as you look to re-structure for GW37. Whilst a GW37 BB team only has one more fixture to deal with with potentially two FT.

      1. Licious Lizard

Completely agree with this. My plan the entire times has been to WC GW 36 to avoid massive blank issues and don't mess up my team for the rest of the gameweeks. The above thoughts just back this up imo.

is there likely to be less teams involved in a GW37 DGW than GW34 though? This might play a factor in using BB - too many players from the same teams will reduce their bonus potential

The clever guys on here are expecting less teams to have a DGW in 37 than in 34 to be fair.

Waiting for the fixtures to be confirmed, but I have 9 currently for GW30 with 5 x FTs left, so should be able to easily construct a decent team that will have 11 in GW 30 while saving a FT, so after GW30 will be able to have 5 FT before GW34 to concentrate on bringing in players that will have 2 matches in DGW 34 and don't have a blank GW35 (Man City and Everton are two of these teams) to maximise GW34 whilst hopefully having a full, good team for GW35.

Yeah I think you are right.

Now we are able to put out a decent team for DGW 34 without WC.

No, mine plan as well, triple cap in DGW 34, WC before GW 36, bring the best possible 15 players for DGW 37, Bench boost GW 37. Saving a FT before gw 37, and using those 2 FT's in GW 38 for whatever is the best at that moment.

The strategy I am more worried about is GW 27- GW 30 management and GW 30- GW 34 management.

      1. BbBb
        • 9 Years

agreed, the tricky part to get right is 27-40 and 30-34 without using your wildcard - what's your current thinking?

      2. Licious Lizard
        • 11 Years
        8 years, 2 months ago

Yeah I think I am fairly set on the above strategy if all goes according to plan.

I think I already have 9 players for gw 30 (without the possible Arsenal players, which will bring me to 11).

My personal strategy is to get a strong team out for gw 30, but do it with the absolute minimal transfers. I almost see gw 30 as a normal week and am not going to bring in players for gw 30 that I wouldn't do anyway. This may mean that I will only play 10 players or not. The more important thing for me is to get a good team for all gw 27-35 - of course with extra focus on the DGW in 34 and the blank in 35.

People going crazy and bringing in players for gw 30 that has bad fixtures and they wouldn't bring in otherwise, just to field 11 (or even for a bench player) is maybe not the best strategy in my opinion.

It's tricky for me, currently have 7 players for GW 30, with this week's saved transfer i will have enough to field 11, but need to have good base for GW 34, so probably gonna go for 3 City players in GW 30, as they have no blank and have DGW 34, keeping 2 Arsenal's and Lingard that i have on the bench, and than see which are the best options to bring in with minimum or if no hits

I doubt 37 will be a great Bench Boost week. There will be a lot of rest/rotation if there's not much riding on the games, and some of your DGWers will have a Cup Final to rest for too. But it might still be the better option than losing the Leicester players in 34.

      1. BbBb

this is an interesting thought - you also get a lot of dead ties or freak results at the end of the season with some teams having nothing to play for while others playing for their PL survival or the title

        1. Licious Lizard
          • 11 Years
          8 years, 2 months ago

I agree with PASQUALINHO that you could face some odd rotations in the end, but I would still expect the teams playing for survival and in the top for European spots/the title to give it their best shot. You always have the risk of rotation in DGWs as a lot of team will also play other games close to GW 34.

Maybe you can use the freak results to your advantage 😉

wouldnt worry on loading up on dgw players for gw37, only one fixture left after that anyway, sometimes that can be a lottery who will play depending on if teams fighting for title, euoropean places etc, will use trans for gw34 and trip cap, then wc gw36 bench boost gw37

always chance of rotation on any dgw, as it means teams are playing sat mweek {for dgw}then sat again, chances are 1 0r 2 may get rested, but thats the chance we have to take in a dgw , dont fancy having 15 dgw players in gw34 as i prob wouldnt like the looks of my team for the next couple of weeks ! but thats my preference, good luck all

Yeah the rotation is always a risk in a DGW no matter what.

If you read my article above, I am arguing that doing your WC in 36, BB in 37, you will have very few rounds to worry about - instead of doing WC in 33 and BB in 34.

Not going to get rid of my baby Mahrez, had him since the very start, want him to be my first season keeper 😀

In all honesty though, Leicester have proved they are fixture proof so I wouldn't be shipping Vahrez unless there are suspensions/injuries.

Those Spurs fiztures aren't great but they aren't that bad that I would consider shipping them on a WC and having to use a FT a few weeks later to get one back 🙂

Probably a lot of people here wrongly understands the rule that you cannot play in european night. You can, but not at the same time. So if CL is at 7:45, your domestic game (league or cup) has to finish by that time.

                  B) too casual for my liking, not likely to boost my rank if he does well, even with (C)

                  C) Fancy Norwich to sit back and negate space up front.

Also as frustrating Silva is - 28 onwards he has the best run in coupled with the fact that Gw34 double and fixture 35.

Could work, but the only way you are going to be able to field a full 11 in GW30, and 11 DGWers + 4 strong SGWers in GW34, without taking hits, is if the Newcastle/City game is rearranged in GW34,

Not many of us have blankers to be honest. Like the previous GW when Payet/Costa cappers made massive ground I reckon the same opportunities are available over the next 2 GW's at least.

We tend to all end up with massive DGW scores, only to moan that we end up with a small green arrow. I can see this year to be exactly the same.

Take last week...I scored 56pts and jumped 50k in ranking. Pity I bailed on my Costa(c) gut.

Okay I actually agree with you a little bit, BUT I think there is a big difference in whether you are planning to WC GW 33 or WC GW 36.

If you are planning to WC gw 33 you don't have to pay any attention to the blanks, but if you as I am, planning only to WC in GW 36, then I think it would be crazy not to have the blanks in 30 and 35 + the DGW in 34 in your thoughts already now, when making transfers.

    Most preferring 34 for TC.

    My arguments against.

    In 34
    i) No Kun
ii) Teams will still not face rotation as much. GW 37 could see a few fringe players playing
    iii) Strong teams
    iv) No Kun

Surely that is an argument to use TC in 34 and WC/BB in 36/37 when we can really max out as we wouldn't feel as bad transferring out TOT/LEI players?

Ozil (CPL WBA) may be better than Kun (ARS, new). I'm not sure...

We need to monitor their form prior to GW34. We're 8 GWs away from the chip decision 😀

How come no Kun? Couldn't the City - Newcastle game, originally scheduled for GW27 be placed in GW34?

Why is TC linked only to Kun. I absolutely think people are putting way to much faith in that DGW TC Kun. I hope there is another decent captaincy option for those GW so i can climb faster.

Not sure how the argument against of TC is that teams dont face much rotation? THat has to be an argument for.

      GW35: Mass blankage
GW36: Bring blankers back in on WC, fill the bench
GW37: Super mega ultra bench boost

The shorter gap between the blank and the DGW means WC + BB. Therefore GW34 is best for TC chip.

Chelsea are flying but Vardy has good fixtures , form and a fixture in gw 30 . It depends on how many players you have for gw 30 .

      You don't deserve your 2FTs.

I think if you let one burn, you should only have 1FT the next week.
Like in the game Risk, gotta attack to get a card.
