Scout Notes – Gameweek 34 – Tuesday

Sergio Aguero bags his fourth goal of double Gameweek 34 in City’s stalemate at St James’. Vurnon Anita is the Magpies unlikely hero as Aleksandar Mitrovic is named amongst the Newcastle subs again. Elsewhere, Liverpool and West Ham’s injury worries up front ease ahead of this evening’s home encounters with Everton and Watford respectively.

Aguero nets again

Manchester City failed to strengthen their grip on a top-four berth as they were held to a 1-1 draw at St James’ Park.

Sergio Aguero netted his fourth goal in double Gameweek 34 and, with the maximum bonus also accrued, served up a tally of 26 points over the two fixtures. Notwithstanding the Sky Blues’ progress in the Champions League, they can ill-afford to take their foot of the pedal in the league – given that fifth-placed Manchester United sit five points behind with a game in hand – ensuring that Aguero looks safe from rotation during their run-in (STO, sou, ARS, swa).

Aleksandar Kolarov teed up Aguero for the opener on Tyneside, meaning he’s delivered attacking returns (one goal, two assists) in three of his previous four appearances but still lacks the security of starts. Elsewhere at the back, Vincent Kompany displaced Nicolas Otamendi on his return from the treatment room, leaving Joe Hart as the safest source of Man City defensive coverage.

Anita grabs St James’ leveler

Newcastle tiptoed closer to survival by way of a hard-fought point against Manuel Pellegrini’s troops.

Vurnon Anita grabbed the equaliser, while Mousa Sissoko bagged the assist. Having scored in the weekend win over Swansea, the latter served up 13 points over the double, alerting us to his potential as a cut-price route into a resurgent Newcastle attack that’s scored seven goals in four.

Despite producing an impactful cameo (assist) against Swansea City, Aleksandar Mitrovic was again consigned to bench duty as Papiss Cisse led the line again. The Magpies enjoy a mouth-watering pair of fixtures (CRY, avl) after their trip to Anfield next Gameweek, yet Mitrovic is clearly not trusted by Rafa Benitez to propel them out of the bottom three, forcing his 23,000 new owners to re-invest those funds.

Origi fit for Merseyside derby

Jurgen Klopp confirmed that Divock Origi has been passed fit for the Merseyside derby after shaking off a minor back issue:

“Divock was only a little bit [of a problem] with the back – maybe from sitting on the bench! It was not a real issue. He felt it a little bit in the game and so we left him out of training yesterday but that was only not to take a risk. So that is okay.”

Having rested the majority of his starters at Bournemouth following Liverpool’s Europa League triumph, Klopp is set to name a much-changed side for Everton’s visit. Given that Origi has scored four times in as many outings across all competitions, there’d be no surprise if he returned to the XI tonight. Klopp has started Daniel Sturridge in each of the last four league outings, though, with the forward bagging three goals and two assists over that period, and another start this evening for the England international would likely invite heavy investment ahead of a favourable trio of fixtures (NEW, swa, WAT).

Mixed news for Martinez

Roberto Martinez offered a squad update before their trip to Anfield, revealing that Phil Jagielka and Seamus Coleman have been ruled out, while Aaron Lennon, Tom Cleverley and Leighton Baines are touch-and-go:

“Phil Jagielka and Seamus Coleman will definitely be out of the derby but it is too early to make a final decision before the weekend. At this evening’s session we are going to assess Aaron Lennon, Tom Cleverley and Leighton Baines to have a final decision. They are very close and we will have a better idea if they are back for tomorrow.”

If Baines also fails to recover in time for tonight, those holding Liverpool attacker will be a little more optimistic in light of Everton’s injury troubles. Given that the Toffees have mustered one clean sheet in eight and are facing a team that chalked up the most shots on target (27) across their previous four matches, we’re unconvinced by their clean-sheet prospects. Nonetheless with a double Gameweek 37 and home matches against Bournemouth and Norwich still to follow,  Everton’s 4.3-priced first choice keeper Joel Robles and goal scoring centre back Ramiro Funes Mori remain on our radar.

Palace quartet miss out

Alan Pardew said that Yannick Bolasie, Scott Dann, Joel Ward and Joe Ledley will all sit out Crystal Palace’s trip to Manchester United but return for their FA Cup semi-final on Sunday:

“Yala has got a bit of an issue, Wardy will miss the game, Scott Dann is struggling and Joe Ledley has a knock, so we’ve got a few problems. They should all be OK for Sunday but they won’t make Manchester United.”

In more positive news on the injury front, James McArthur is set for a run-out at Old Trafford after completing his rehabilitation program.

The likes of Bolasie and Dann attracted a fair degree of interest for the Eagles’ successive double Gameweeks but are now set to be shipped out en masse ahead of their blank in Gameweek 35. Although a home tie against a floundering Stoke City outfit in Gameweek 37 looks promising, that encounter is sandwiched between two challenging road clashes (new, sou), which should curtail investment in the Eagles’ squad for the remainder of the campaign.

Flores set to rotate

Quique Sanchez Flores pledged to make wholesale changes for Watford’s trip to West Ham, but keeper Heurelho Gomes is expected to keep his place:

“In respect of the shape we are not going to change a lot because we are training with the same system or very similar every time. But in terms of the players everyone in the squad knows we are going to change a lot. Practically all the players are going to change and play so we will use a lot of new players for the next match.”

Thanks to a pair of penalty saves against West Bromwich Albion on Saturday, Gomes now boasts a 16-point lead at the summit of the goalkeeper rankings. Although Gomes’ shutout potential looks grim due to the Hornets’ heavy rotation and the Irons’ high-powered offense, his save point potential – having earned at least one point in nine of his last 10 outings – should keep his points tally ticking over. With home matches against Villa and Sunderland on either side of a double Gameweek 37, the Brazilian looks on course for a prosperous end to the season.

Sakho back for Hammers

Slaven Bilic said that Diafra Sakho has recovered from his knock, leaving him with a full complement of players to choose from on Wednesday:

“With one training session to go, Diafra Sakho is back from injury so we have a full squad available, which is good.”

Even though Sakho is back in contention for the Watford clash, Andy Carroll (five goals in four) looks more likely to lead the line at the Boleyn Ground after he was utilised as a sub at Leicester last weekend. Expanding our focus beyond the Hammers’ blank next Gameweek, the depth of forward options at Bilic’s disposal could promote rotation during their double Gameweek 37 (SWA, MUN). If West Ham’s team sheet at Leicester is anything to go by, the Croatian boss will continue to pick the striker based on the perceived strengths and weaknesses of the opposition’s back line.

Van Gaal hints at Rashford start

Ander Herrera is likely to return for United’s home encounter with Palace, Louis van Gaal has confirmed. After making a handful of changes against Villa last weekend, the Dutchman confirmed he is set to tinker with his team sheet once again this evening, though went on to suggest that Marcus Rashford will retain a starting role up front again:

“You know that you have to play matches and you know also that some players have difficulties with the load of matches. You have to rotate because of that. In the Premier League I have to rotate much more than in another league, and that is also a consequence of the high rhythm of the Premier League. I changed him (Rashford) after 70 minutes, I believe, and that is also to give him a little bit of rest. He didn’t train the day after and also the day after that he didn’t train. I want to keep him fresh because he is in the momentum of scoring and that is very important for him but also for the team. That is why I don’t rotate him.”

After bagging the only goal of the 1-0 win over Villa, Rashford – who also netted in last week’s cup win at West Ham – is likely to leap onto Fantasy managers’ radars if handed another start tonight. Whilst a blank Gameweek 35 and trip to Leicester will persuade us to hold off for now, United’s double Gameweek 37 and home encounter against Bournemouth in the final round of fixtures bolsters the youngster’s appeal at a price of just 4.6.

Fantasy Football Scout daily hot topic

FFScout community’s team of the year so far…

Yesterday I asked who would be in your FPL XI of the year. This is based on your favourite players. Many will likely be there due to a good points score. While others will be those that did well in a certain week for you, or have proved a good differential.

One of the reasons I did this was because there has often been talk of a FFScout template. I wanted to see if this template is simply based on points, or whether there really are players that are popular here for other reasons. I also wanted to see if there were high scoring players that are just not popular among the community and how such bias may affect our future transfer moves both for the season run in and next season.

    Here’s the results

Team of the year from FFScout community

    Butland (Gomes)
    Fuchs Bellerin TobyA (Daniels Simpson)
    Ozil Mahrez Payet Alli (Sigurdsson)
    Kane Aguero Vardy

And here is the FPL Dream Team for comparison – based on total points scored

    Gomes (Lloris)
Toby A Bellerin Fuchs (Huth, Koscielny)
    Mahrez Ozil Eriksen Alli (Sigurdsson)
    Vardy Kane Lukaku

    Analysis

    The Points Players

Points are obviously the driving motivation for naming a player as a favourite of the season. That is good to see.

Among goalkeepers the FPL's top scorer so far Gomes figures high among the community’s thoughts.

The midfields are the same. Points are the driving force among midfielders clearly.

Among defenders the three top scorers, Toby A, Fuchs and Bellerin, are also the community’s top three.

For strikers the two top scorers Vardy and Kane all scored well among the community.

    The differences

    In goal

In goal Butland is the fourth highest scorer, but now injured he is some 18 pts behind Gomes. Here we have our first FFScout favourite. Next season his good scores earlier this season will mean he figures well in our draft Gameweek 1 squads, should he recover in time. But with 10 clean sheets compared to 14 for Schmeichel and 13 for DDG and Lloris are we being mistaken? Are perhaps Lloris or DDG a better option.

A key factor in Butland’s popularity is his good value as part of a rotation pair. I’m sure there will be analysis over the summer to see if rotating goal keepers really is the best policy.

    In defence

Daniels is a key figure here. He figures in the FFSCOUT team but is way down in 10th in terms of actual points. The community is likely to remember his goals and bonus points well next season making him a firm favourite for selection, meanwhile I suspect he will be ignored by the majority of managers.

Fifth highest scoring defender Koscielny meanwhile didn’t get any votes. Most opted for Bellerin. This makes sense and with Daniels just four points off of Koscielny the Bournemouth man offers more value. But with four games remaining for the Arsenal man and better fixtures perhaps doubling up on Bellerin and Koscielny could pay off this season and next year too.

    In midfield

No surprises here. The top five scoring midfielders are top in our affections. Clearly midfielders hold no sentiment and the community quite rightly looks ruthlessly for points rather than those going under the radar. All five of these midfielders will be popular next season – although probably unaffordable to get all due to their success.

I wanted to mention Barkley here. He is just one point behind Sigurdsson and still in more than a quarter of teams. But just two members of the community picked him. This indicates he is likely to be an unpopular pick next season. Will he be unfairly overlooked though by us?

    In attack

Lukaku is notable here. He is the third highest scoring forward this season, with more points than Aguero and 18 goals to his name. He also has eight assists this season so far. But not a single one of you named him. His recent blank in the double gameweek will be a key driver here. But will that experience unfairly prejudice our decision when selecting forwards. Will he be ignored for the DGWK 37 and next season, while the majority of managers snap him up? I can see the FFScout template heading for a fall in DGWK 37 by swerving him.

Lots of spurs in that Dream Team. Maybe that's why members didn't pick them all.

        Who is that?

Also remember this is the highest with our votes compared to the highest in terms of actual points.

Be great to have a dream team in terms of PPG added to this as well.

Bobby Firmino. An FFS enigma. 30 points more than Payet in last started. Still Payet is essential and Bobby a gamble.

This is a great point. Exactly what I was after. Payet is a firm favourite, but Firmino is seen as a gamble...when in 2016 he's been Mr consistent. I got him in for this current DGWK but I'll admit I was reticent - clearly I shouldn't have been and my bias was at play.

If he gets another double digit score tonight he goes straight into my team of the year. 🙂 That's how Fantasy managers' minds work.

Have him since 10gws and i've climbed from 50k to 1.5k.

              Same with Payet vs Siggy

Payet is actually overhyped as an FPL asset because he's such a great player.

FPL Dream Team based on ppg (minimum 20 games) for the season to date is pretty similar:

Indeed, that's mentioned in the analysis. But how will those memories affect us.

For example why do I ignore Kolarov and place Lukaku so low down on my list of favourite strikers when he is a points machine. Its these experiences such as double gameweeks that affect us - for better or worse.

For example I did talk about Milner on the scoutcast but genuinely a factor in not picking him is because he let me down in a DGWK five years ago. Sounds crazy when written down but this is how Fantasy managers minds work.

Yep, see Lateriser12's point above re Firmino and Payet. do we have favourites that perhaps shouldn't be? Do we ignore others unfairly?

The Payet point is particularly current as he's a firm favourite for the GWK 37 TC. But should he be?

Eriksen's literally tied for points with Alli on 162, but costs £3m more. Assuming, we've also had Kane and a defender in Rose or Alderweireld, there's just not been space for Eriksen.

See above. I had Kane, Alli and Eriksen for their haul - sadly I ditched on the wildcard but that's a different story. Having those three was a key factor I shot up the rankings and got several green arrows in a row.

Cost was a bias, doubling up was a bias. Seen that time and time again (cue misty eyed reminiscence of having Sturridge and Suarez that year). 🙂

Alderweireld 162, Eriksen 162, Alli 162. Having the cheaper two alongside Kane served me fine thanks. It's like the whole Costa/Hazard/Fabregas thing from last season but less extreme. Ultimately it had some big pay off weeks but by and large the Terry/Hazard/Costa players did better with more flexibility in their budget.

But arguably you may have got even more from a far cheaper Leicester defence double up and Eriksen, Alli and Kane. Morgan and Fuchs for example. All depends on whether your midfielder could match Eriksen and your other defender could match Leicester.

True, optimum choices were the usual 3, other mf available at erik price but noone compares to those 3 at their price pts.

Luckily i picked eriksen up in our draft league so got to appreciate his consistency in a different game.

The unusual consistency of the players in the FPL Dream Team and the number of shoo-ins for our team of the season and its similarity to the FPL Dream Team are probably major reasons why so many FPL managers with little previous success have found it so easy to maintain high positions, provided that they happened to get the right players in early or from the start.

Other big factors were the successful early use of the new chips by many of these managers, and the fact that so many of this season's best players were not expensive, so it was easy to select most of them without having to compromise or chop and change.

I have however been amazed at how our Watch-list repeatedly ignored Gomes's performances, despite his being in excellent form for most of the season. Mahrez and Gomes were definitely the biggest successes in my GW3 wildcard.

    Robles

How many points do you reckon this team can get for rest of the double? Thanks

    Mitrovic, KDB, Delaney
    to
    Kane, Alli, Walker/Rose for -8

    Worth it???

Not for me KDB and Mitro should do well I think in the run in

Can you get away with just the two?

      Delaney -> Walker/Rose.... -4 + (2playing 90pts and a probable +4 pts for a CS) and fingers crossed.

Rafa just doesn't seem into Mitro.

Seems just about worth it tbh.
I still think it's a gamble about KDB not playing this weekend though even with the upcoming semifinal

Alli should probably match him for pts.

    (A)
    Martial -> Long (-4)
for a good attempt at 11 playing this week
    Or

    (B)
    for a -12
    Martial - > Kane
    Mitro - > Long
    Dann -> Rose/Walker

each point hit costs about 1k in rankings atm where I am.

    Now then Guys!

Your thoughts if I may. With this team...

    Mignolet - Robles
    Bellerin - Fuchs - Sakho - Gabriel - Delaney
Sanchez - De Bruyne - Payet - Coutinho - Lanzini
    Aguero - Kane - Martial

    I can easily fund:

    Coutinho & Martial > Alli & Sturridge -4

This leaves me with a 4-3-3, which should be mostly nailed, but there's certainly some rotation risk.

Would you leave it at that? Would you take another -4 for Delaney > Someone (considering it MIGHT work out as a -2)?

Good shout! A lot will depend also on how much breathing space I generate with my GW34.

Also, if Sturridge gets a full game against Everton, I'd be less confident he'll start in GW35. Can't take a hit for a rotation risk. He has seemed one of the two most amiled players in the league if late though, alongside Firmino.

Think we missed a big trick by going with Martial over Rashford. Rashford had started over 10 games in a row, playing down the middle and obviously was in decent form.

Not only that but he was also 3m cheaper. Would have left us with more money to upgrade the defence. Like Smalling over Rojo/Darmian/TFM etc. Obviously easy to see in hindsight but I'm surprised more people didn't use this strategy.

Finally into the top 5k - it's been slow progress all year - but it's only been possible with the new chips.

I think next year I will be more aggressive from the off, getting in the good value players from the off and not afraid to taking a few hits to do it - was too slow to move on Mahrez and Vardy this year despite their clear good underlying numbers.

I messed up my team balance on GW4 WC. Waited until early December to take a -12 to sort it out. Wish I had not left it that late.

Other than that I can't complain too much. Making transfers early to get on the price rises proved to be a top strategy. Happy being in top 10k.

Only BOU is a good fixture. Other teams have a lot to fight for, unlike Everton.

I currently have 9 players + Captain X 2 = 11 players left on Bench Boost left to complete this GW.

If the 11 players score the average my team has scored per GW this year of 57 points per GW, I will reach 142. That would still be an acceptable score for this GW.

So come on team, lets do this...

Hopefully Klopp will start Clyne, Sakho and Coutinho

By that logic you usually have 12 not 11. But yeah I agree

Less about fixtures more about backing teams that need a clean sheet.

Those at the bottom produce clean sheets every year, so i'm looking at Norwich Sunderland Newcastle...

Sorry but as soon as I hear stuff like this, Fulham 6 Norwich 0 on the final day immediately springs to mind to blow that notion out of the water.

Who's better to ship for Alli & Kane in GW35?

    A) De Bruyne, Mitrovic
    B) Coutinho, Lukaku
