Dugout Discussion – Tuesday – Group D

Group D now draws to a conclusion in Tuesday’s final pair of fixtures.

Spain go up against Croatia tonight as the defending champions look to extend their 100% record on the back of wins over Czech Republic and Turkey.

Vicente del Bosque’s men still need a point to top the group and avoid slipping to second place, where they’d be pitted against the winners of Group E, which looks likely to be Italy.

Croatia, meanwhile, are still reeling from a late capitulation against Czech Republic which saw them throw away a two-goal advantage with just 15 minutes left on the clock.

Turkey and Czech Republic go head-to-head in the other match. Fatih Terim’s men are one of only three sides yet to find the net in Euro 2016 and with just two shots on target, it’s fair to say they need to improve their shooting to stand any chance of progressing.

Bearing in mind that both sides were ranked in the bottom three for shots conceded inside the box after the first two rounds of fixtures, though, Fantasy managers will be optimistic of goals in the penultimate night of the group stages.

TM ; deffo hot topic material, this one.

Goal of the tournament so far, everyone?

For me, it's gotta be super Wes. What a goal from Hoolahan. Flippin amazballs.

*disclaimer. I've only seen the 5 goals that were in Ireland matches but I remain convinced that I am right.

Well done to England, Wales and Norn Ireland, hopefully we join you tomorrow night.

😀 😀 Happy summer FFSers, I see some great Euro FF ranks knocking about, good stuff! 🙂

Used WC early and ended up with the worst d-line in fantasy history this GW (Should have gone Hector instead of Matel but I took a late decision to squeeze Ronaldo in.): Tatarusanu/Pyatov (3/2 pts) Giaccherini, Walker (0pts), Matel (1), Ramos (-1) and Guerreiro.
I must say I'm proud over this achievement! 😉

Kozacik (16 points with the C) or KDB or Ronaldo.

8 points is a pretty decent tally.

MD 1: 5th in the world.
MD 2: 25th in the world.
MD 3: 100th in the world.

Wildcard played and all players I had before scored well. I hate wildcards. I think they're a bad thing for me personally.

Even if its going well i think i should use it, and when you press you think you should change more than 2 or 3 to get your 'monies' worth but actually it fails. FPL nightmare for me too.

I like one proposed idea for a new euro competition format. Could work in world cups too I think.

Eliminate the pool system. Have one round robin where you don't play everyone.

The 1 pool is divided into 4-6 pots depending on rank. Each team plays one team in each pot including the pot that team is in. The top 8 of the 24 team competition go through to the quarter finals. It could be the top 16 at world cups.

What this does is it becomes impossible to work out all the permutations of how to qualify forcing teams to go for wins and not settle for draws or rely on goal difference. It should result in much more entertaining football.

Interesting. I heard an Italian agent talking today about how a lot of the 'football types' in Italy were gunning for a 2nd place finish to avoid the harder route depending on the 'obvious' results.

Spain however have changed that pathway now.

I think having 24 teams has also given a lot to the format. Not for the better, 3rd placed teams like NIR who are rightfully on cloud 9 actually should be out.

Not entirely true. Look at England and the home nations, they're playing for points, and pride.

Italy may be the first team to really not give a hoot and sacrifice the result so far in this whole tournament.

Look at Albania when they scored that one goal. Huge pride and that was all about football.

The difference is Team A and Team B played against each other and 2 others so can be compared. It isn't the super 6s in cricket which is still group based.

Honestly I think you're picking at hairs a little bit here. There is easy pools and hard pools in all tournaments. It will be impossible to make it perfectly even for everyone without having a full round robin no matter how the tournament is structured.

There is normally a "Group of Death". Luck of the draw there. Portugal had an easy group yet may not even qualify. The thing is the 4 in Group F are against each other, not the rest which your idea seems based on.

Its still unfair if you compare teams who are in different pools. You point only has merit if you only compare teams in the same pool. Its not looking at the bigger picture though.

Seems we will just go around in circles. Rather the 16 that we had before but enjoy the new teams being involved.

The difference is the points table will be a lot harder to predict meaning teams have to go for wins.

Got to stick with 16 teams for Euros. 24 was a mistake, all this faffing around with 4 best 3rd place teams is just bloody annoying.
It won't change. No doubt they'll increase it to 32 for financial and TV rights, San Marino, Malta and Luxembourg will have a chance to join the mighty Albania in a major tournament final.

I accept that. It was in its true format when only 8 qualified. When Ireland made it in 88 it was still a true tournament .
Since then it's become a commercial juggernaut . But hey ho what can be done when the likes of Platini et al was lining his pockets all along.
Football, long ago, went out of the true football fans realms of dreams and became an altogether different animal.

Yep. The format could be solved by having straight knock-out. You could even start with 64 teams and it would still only be 6 rounds, one less than in the current tournament. It would also ease the pressure of the qualification process, with less teams to be eliminated less games would be needed.

But it will never happen because TV wants a guaranteed 3 games for their national team before they'll pay top whack. And UEFA wants to maximise the income so it can channel it towards "grass roots football". 😕

The NCAA basketball tourney is like this and it is amazing, but you would need much stronger financial guarantees just for participating before the big nations would ever agree.

France has no incentive to play San Marino in a knockout match, ever.

Being a low scoring sport compared to basketball, the better team doesn't win as much as in basketball.

Not in the Euros. Really not. In actual fact, there is no need to stay in the host country at all. England could happily have based themselves in London or at St George's Park for this tournament and travelled out for each game. Would hardly have required more travel time and would be nothing more than a Champions League team does.

I agree that incentivizing teams to push for wins would improve the tournament but I think that the biggest complaints with a system like that would be the disparity within pots. For example, using this year's Euro pots one team could've faced Germany, Italy, Poland, and Wales in their 4 games while another could've faced Portugal, Ukraine, Romania, and Albania. This would be less of a problem with more pots and/or with a better rating system than the current coefficients. I'd definitely be interested in watching a tournament set up like that in any case.

A thought that occurred to me to incentivize winning would be having 12 teams advance to the knockout stage with the 4 teams with the highest points -> goal differential -> etc getting a bye into the quarterfinals to give group favorites/leaders something to play for. That would also get rid of all the convoluted permutations of which 3rd place teams advance. It would, however, come with its own problems.

        Nah.

        Back to 8 qualifiers.

Meaningful group matches. Top two straight into the semis. Every match a big match.

Qualifiers are what they are. Qualifiers.

No one should have to watch Slovakia Vs Hungary.

Unless they are Solvakian or Hungarian and it's a QUalifying match. No disrespect etc.

'12 teams advance to the knockout stage with the 4 teams with the highest points -> goal differential -> etc getting a bye into the quarterfinals to give group favorites/leaders something to play for.'

Kind of similar to what they do in the NFL playoffs - have a 'Wildcard' round, then have the Quarter-Finals - I think this would work really well.

International Basketball is like this a lot of times. Could be interesting. The biggest issue in the Euros is any qualifying system that keeps 2/3 of the original entrants is very flawed.

I saw on ESPN earlier a suggestion for too 12 qualifying with the four best #1s getting a bye into the QF and the other eight teams playing each other to get into the QF.

Big incentives for winning the group as convincingly as possible, and no 3rd place teams qualify.

Meanwhile, the Copa America has been great. I pity those of you who have had to sleep while the best matches of the summer have been on.

Also makes me realize that Europe's attacking talent pool is underwhelming. The firepower on display over here even with two of the three Barca trinity not playing has been impressive.

The tactics are not exciting and the managers seem very curmudgeonly, but the slow pace might be the players as well. That #8 from Ukraine today with the male pattern baldness was not a very good advert for the beautiful game.

He'll get 8 points more leaving him on 175.

      you should get

      6 for Lukaku.
      5 for nani
      2 for sign
      0 for Bonucci.

      total: 164.

The last 16 'free transfer' teams will need a bit of strategising with England, France, Germany, Italy, Spain and maybe Portugal in the same side of the draw!

Could make the quarters team selection a bit tricky, if you do not still have a WC left 🙂

Wales/Coatia topping their group and England/Spain not living up to expectations has messed up the knock-out seedlings

How much will the U.S.A lose by to Argentina? A smell a hot 0-4 coming up, el tri of Di Maria, Messi & Higuain is so f*cking frivolous right now.

    RIP U.S.A

Don't know what to hope for, honestly. Am afraid of a Mexico-Chile result a little bit, though maybe if they play that well against us it will feel a bit like a rapture and I can just glory in the comfort of being beaten by a much greater team.

Ha, that's a good way of looking at it. No shame in going out to (arguably) 'the', if not one of the best teams in the world right now.

You guys have definitely been the 3rd/4th best team right now, I'd love to see you guys face Colombia for 3rd place. Great match-up on paper.

Best of luck though mate 😉 Maybe a little Dempsey magic's gonna occur.

What's the expected Italy line-up vs. Ireland? Giaccherini and Bonucci to be rested?
