Dugout Discussion – France vs Portugal

Euro 2016 comes to its conclusion this evening as France take on Portugal in Paris.

The hosts are firm favourites to triumph after seeing off Germany 2-0 in the semi-finals on Thursday evening. Didier Deschamps’ side have scored at least twice in five of their six matches over the tournament – indeed, a goalless draw against Switzerland in their final group fixture was the only occasion that Les Bleus have failed to chalk up a victory.

Portugal’s road to the final has been less convincing. Fernando Santos’ side didn’t win any of their first five fixtures in normal time before defeating Wales 2-0 over 90 minutes.

Delving into the data, the two nations boast very similar threats in the final third. In terms of minutes per attempt over the tournament, France just edge it by 5.3 to Portugal’s 5.5, whilst they also have the slimmest of leads for shots on target (36 to 34).

The home side have been far more clinical. Deschamps’ troops have netted 12.3% of their opportunities compared to their opponents’ 7.1%, which equates to 13 goals to eight.

At the back, the pair have served up three clean sheets apiece, with France’s defence slightly more resilient, having conceded four times to Portugal’s five. Given that they are also near-identical for shots inside the box conceded (33 to 31), though, tonight’s clash may not be quite as one-sided as many anticipate.

Have y'all got your team names sorted out. There aren't quite as many awesome new player names to play with this year.

Looking at the Suspension tightrope, I reckon Byram might be a bit of a star this season. Looked good when he played last season, although possibly a bit of a YC magnet? Most were from the Championship mind you.

Or will he be another Grealish?

Not sure HVT....games I saw he looked hard working and attacking....and they sold Tomkins (?) who I think was his competition.

He kinda reminded me of Grealish (in his first season for Villa) with his enthusiasm/effort on the pitch. Grealish is a massive goose off the pitch though.

Byram might come in at 4.5m 😎

    2. Rum Ham

Looks now as if his main competition is Antonio in that RB/RWB role. There have been indications that MA will continue to play there and should that be the case Byram might struggle to get into the side given Antonio's attacking output.

The big hope I have for this season is they've played around with the points/baps algorithms to make players across positions more equal.

For example, I reckon where players score points (goals, CS etc) these shouldn't be double dipped into the bonus points. They've already got point for those events, why give 'em more?

    1. Test Eagles
      • Fantasy Football Scout Member

I agree in some sense ... I've always wanted to see some equalisation to help bolster defensive midfielders who are unlikely to score or assist but are a major factor in a side keeping a clean sheet. Guys like Fernandinho, Kante, Schneiderlin, Wanyama, Dembele, Dier (when classified as a mid), etc. Having maybe 2 points for a clean sheet could really help broaden the selection of players.

Having said that, if a player is going to whack home a brace and an assist then they're mostly the reason their team wins and should get the 3 points, regardless of position.

      1. Jafooli
        • 12 Years
        7 years, 8 months ago

True and agreed, but instead of giving them xx bonus points towards their baps give them x. So they really do need to score a brace & assist to get all three.

Currently Kane scores a goal and it's 3baps 80% of the time.

Would also like to see DMs get something more than they currently get, which is zip.

Agree wholeheartedly about your 2 point idea - I have advocated it myself. I think that you'd need a special classification, defensive midfielder, for players like the ones you've highlighted. They rarely get involved in attacks so why not find a simple way of bringing them more into FF consideration?

      4. Pasqualinho
        • 14 Years
        7 years, 8 months ago

I've had a long-held belief that, as far as BPs go, goals should only be counted as shots on target, and assists as key passes - this would then put your brace and assist guy in pole position to get the BPs, but not necessarily a shoo-in - which might mean the bonus is distributed a little more to the players who haven't already benfitted points-wise.

I agree about the CM/DM role but it's hellish difficult. You'd need 2 categories of midfielder and some would be hard to place. Fabregas? Fernandinho? Milner? Yaya?

Also you'd need to decide whether the midfield component of FPL teams would have to contain at least 1 DM for example. In which case you'd need at least a 16-man squad in order to have a sub available for that slot.

It would be nice to see DMs get a better deal in FPL but I think the complexity of actually doing it would be too much.

You're right about differentiating between the types of midfielder as I don't think that doing it solely via the price is very successful. For instance, look at the importance of Kante's role in our wonderful season - it's not at all reflected in his FPL points. Surely we need a scoring system that attempts to reflect on the value of players in the real footballing world .....?

Because bonuses should go to those who played a key part in the outcome of each game?

I agree on the algorithm being amended though. I'd argue that in a drab 0-0 draw defenders getting baps for passing the ball sideways and backwards - as you get with the better teams - makes less sense than the guys at the other end getting them for greater CBI tallies.

      1. Jafooli
        • 12 Years

Yeah point taken regards key part in outcome, but the weighting for a goal for a fwd is still too high compared to other events going on around the pitch.

They are getting better, but reckon there is still room for improvement....

      Borini - Mid
      Kirchhoff - Mid

Not all of those would be helpful for FPL but Antonio and Brunt as defenders would be attractive, as would Rooney as a midfielder.

Well, he's played LB for 2 seasons now. It ought to happen. Probably 5.5 (based on last season's prices) though I'd imagine.

Yeah, maybe not "all over" him at 5.5...

I'm half expecting Pep to pluck some unknown 4.0 defender from the Man City youth system and play him as a false number 9.

I reckon Jose has already put paid to any chance that Rooney will be classified as a Mid.

Got to imagine Mourinho's comments have killed off the possibility of Rooney being classed as a midfielder.

Not at all. All he said was that he wouldn't be using him as a DM. If you actually listen to the press conference concerned it was far less clear cut than it has been made out to be on FFS. 😕

From what he said, the most likely slot for Rooney is #10 behind Ibra.

I listened to the press conference at the time and have reread the exact quotes since. "For me he will be a 9, a 10, or a 9-and-a-half, but not a 6 or even an 8."

Players in the 9 and 10 roles are correctly classified as forwards in FPL.

10 is usually seen as an attacking mid. Oscar, Mata, Silva, Özil, Alli, Payet, Eriksen, Firmino, Barkley - all have played mainly #10 and all have been classified as mids.

True, but none of them (with the exception of Firmino, who might be a FWD this year) are capable of playing as a number 9.

Yep, this was what I was trying to get at. If you're a player likely to be employed as either 9 or 10 you're a forward. The players getting listed are basically pure 10s (or certainly not 9s)

And you can add KDB to that too.

Rooney will be a mid valued at 9.5m or 10m if FPL are wise. At that level he'd be an option. As a forward he won't be.

Rooney can't be put at a mid IMO as it's just too risky. Let's say mou plays him up top and he scores 25 goals everyone would have him. A slightly cheaper striker makes more sense as even in the 10 role some people would get him and he may have some value.

I'd agree with all of that - and if Jose had specifically stated that Rooney would be a no.10 then there would, of course, be a chance he'd be classified as a Mid. But the "9, a 10, or a 9-and-a-half" comments make me think of players like Kane or Ulloa. I'd be really surprised if FPL made him a Mid.

Apologies, that was ambiguously phrased. I meant players who play both 9 and 10 roles, not players who are exclusively number 10s and never 9s as per the lists above.

Yes, that's true. Which is one reason I fear that Firmino may be classed as a forward. 😕

The exact quote: “Maybe he is not a striker, not a No. 9 anymore but for me he will never be a No. 6, playing 50 metres from the goal....For me he will be a 9, a 10, a nine-and-a-half but never a 6 or even an 8.”

So it's clear: he will not be a 9, and, also, he will be a 9.

This is partly what annoys me so much. It clearly wouldn't be a popular appointment with England fans in general and I doubt he'd be given much of a chance, but he's a perfect fit for Sunderland and the first decent appointment we've made in years. Would be a waste on so many levels.

imo he'd be a great appointment for England. He would be the perfect fit for a limited team which he could get well drilled and working well in a system.

It might well be a dream, but we may have to accept that England aren't able to do both. 6 knockout wins in 50 years tells it's own story.

              fair enough.

There's no disgrace in playing football in a conservative and pragmatic way though. Look at what it brought for Greece & Portugal, and even the Netherlands recently (until the Euro 16 qualifiers of course!)

You just need to play 7-0-2-1 formation..

            Foster
            Walker - Terry - Jagielka - Shaw
            Henderson - Dier - Milner
            *big open gap*

Rashford is very much a striker though, doesn't come across as an attacking mid or winger to me.. Which would mean ousting Ibra, I think he'll be a cup-man or next season's ibra replacement..

I'm going with Max Gradel, still expect him to come good.
