After last week’s launch of the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game, our Projections and Rate My Team tools have been updated with initial numbers in our Members Area and are now live.

Our members can now get access to these areas via the menu bar and start putting both to use in their pre-season selections.

We will be tweaking this numbers on a daily basis as new players enter the game and as the summer friendlies reveal more on likely starting lineups and tactics.

Once again this term, the projections are based on the Rate My Team statistical model, developed by Chris Atkinson.

Below you’ll find an FAQ on our Projections and Rate My Team, plus links to movies with Chris that talk you through the functionality of the tool and even the methods that go into building and maintaining it week on week.

Access to these tools requires Membership and these are available for the pre-season price of £12.50 (RRP £15.00). Registered users can upgrade their accounts via this link, while new users can register as members here.

View this page for full details on all our benefits for Members.

How do I use the Projections?
Crucially, these tables can be used as another opinion-former when comparing players. Every player is rated for goals, assists, clean sheets etc based on values created by the “Rate My Team” statistical model – the values returned for each player are the expected values in accordance with its calculations.

A good way of thinking about them is to consider them average values for each player. If the season was played out 500 times, the values you’ll find in these projection tables are the average that the model would expect the player to score in each Gameweek.

One of the most useful aspects of the Projections is the value column. You can sort by this to find the best value (Points Per FPL Million) delivered by players in each position.

With tables for the season and the opening six Gameweeks, you can get a view on long-term and short-term returns and value.

What are these values based on?
The Rate My Team statistical model is a complex beast – it uses historical data stretching back a number of seasons and, of course, specific player and team data.

When generating the player values, the model looks at the specific fixture in each Gameweek, assessing the strength of both teams before calculating the likely team goals scored and how these goals will translate to specific player stats. The probability of a player taking part in the match is also a key ingredient – factors such as rotation, injuries and suspensions are taken into account and fed into the algorithm.

When will these Projections be updated?
We will update the projections almost each day in the pre-season. As we get more data on likely first choice lineups and as the transfer market moves to cast doubt over starters, we will adapt and tweak the model accordingly. A new player can have a major impact on the projections and Rate My Team, influencing the projected output of his new team-mates.

The projections will also be updated throughout the season – again, almost on a daily basis, providing a week by week view of what the model expects each player to score for the remaining Gameweeks to help guide your selections and transfers. Major updates are made on both Tuesday and Friday in order to build the latest team news into the numbers.

What is Rate My Team?
Rate My team is a statistical model built specifically to assess every player in the Premier League and return their expected values for Fantasy Premier League (FPL) points in a given Gameweek. The system is a complex and thorough one which, of course, plots the probabilities of a player’s time on the pitch, their expected number of goals, assists, bonus points, yellow and red cards, clean sheets, own goals, goals conceded and saves.

The strength of the opponent they are facing in a given Gameweek is also crucial; so every team has an attacking, defensive rating, every player a probability of playing a given match with injuries, suspensions and international absence factored in.

How Can It Help Me?
If you’re a member you can use the Rate My Team tool in a number of ways. Firstly, you can use it to predict what specific players will score, on average, over the next X number of Gameweeks. You have a players table that can be filtered by position or FPL cost and which can be extended to show any number of Gameweeks. You can also sort on “Value” to find those players projected to offer the best points per million return.

However, this is just one part of the functionality. Once the season starts, Rate My Team can also analyse your existing FPL lineup, recommend captains, vice captains, your bench and order of substitutes and allow you to model your future transfers.

How Accurate is Rate My Team?
We’re not going to try and claim that Rate My Team is X% accurate – we’ve never attempted to track a figure, focusing our efforts on keeping the tool up to date to serve those who use it.

Instead what we will say is that the tool was used on a weekly basis by Fantasy Football Scout member Ed Masters who finished third in the FPL last season – check out his interview with us here.

Before that, both Tom Fenley and Simon March were members of Fantasy Football Scout and also used Rate My Team – Tom and Simon were FPL champions in 2014/15 and 2013/14.

We’ve previously created a number of movies, together with the creator of Rate My Team Chris Atkinson, which explain the tools in full detail. You can view these below.

In a 10-man draft league. Is this a good midfield considering the circumstances?

    Haz Firmino/Mané Mkhi/Martial Silva/Nolito Redmond

I know a little expensive but value isn't the issue in my league.

Thank you! Yes they are definitely my preferred options, especially Silva over Nolito. But I'd rather have Mané and Nolito over other random mids as I feel over the course of the season, I need man city and Liverpool cover, they have so many goals in them.
All 4 are pretty nailed, right?

For me the biggest question marks are Tadic and Drinkwater, have I missed anything?

And I'm going Lamela from the start, and expect to downgrade Ayew to Townsend (or Bolasie, if he looks better) in GW3.

I've got KDB - Mahrez (or Mikhi) - Lamela - Ayew - Leko (or Capoue), and quite like it.

Late on this, but I really like Lamela this season. He came alive late last season, and to save 1.5 from Eriksen and Alli, for what I think will be fairly similar production, will be very handy.

      It's different!

Main issues are Kante and Bertrand.

Bertrand a little too expensive for the fixtures - can't really rotate him.
Kante has quite a few alternatives at that price.

Not sure who Clucas is. N'Sue is a rotation risk

I could switch Bertrand to Terry possibly, I'm unsure why I really want him in my team. Just unsure who Kante could be switched with.

Clucas banged a few assists in last season which makes him a good cheap mid and the other two defenders are just cheap ones who probably won't make it to the field anyway.

        Thanks for your help!

Kane blowing a gasket was partly responsible for their demise last season imo. I'm sure you should expect a few games off or from the bench this year. It wasn't just that he stopped scoring, he still was, but he just looked shot...

Gonzalo Higuain has joined Juventus for £75.3m (€90m) from Napoli, according to Sky Italy.

The Argentina international has agreed a contract until 2020 worth £6.3m per season.

Juventus have paid his full release clause after Higuain completed his medical in Madrid on Friday.

Once confirmed by the clubs, the transfer will become the most expensive deal in Serie A history.

The Pogba deal might very well happen but us signing Higuain has nothing to do with it. We're paying the €90m is two €45m installments, one now and the other next year. We can easily afford that without selling Pogba. Morata, Zaza and Pereyra are likely to bring us €70m or more.

Not 100%, but 35-40 mill euros is alot to spend on a player to keep on the bench. I like Chelseas opening fixtures and he can be a good differential i feel.

Very unsure about Negredo. I've had Rhodes and Hernandez in other drafts, but it's difficult to find the third cheep forward with such an expensive midfield.

I like the differentials, thoughts on downgrade Kante to 4.5 and upgrade King? Although not a huge amount unlocked at 6m compared to 5.5m...

I could switch Kante for Fletcher and afford a 6 mill midfielder, but i can't find anyone i would rather have than King.
King played up front all last year and will probably play alongside Wilson or right behind him this year. So should be a threat and is classified as a midfielder again.

If you assume Rambo is back for the opener:

    A. Rambo + Wilson

    B. Gradel + Giroud

I wouldn't be in a rush to get either combo.

Ozil or Sanchez for Arsenal atacking cover only IMO.

Rambo to start ahead of Cazorla and arsenal signing a striker are the big factors here. Arsenal seem determined on getting an upgrade on Giroud

With so many new managers in the league, this could be the most relevant season to WC early.

Lots of questions to be answered in the first few GWs.

Redmond has played in one of the striking positions in one of their pre season games, and in the hole in the other

And in their last match Tadic and long didn't play, so I reckon even Puel would admit it's all up in the air

all up in the air? is that your way, and English football's in general, of explaining tactics you don't understand, that's not a simple 442 or 4231?

                It's not tactics

It's personnel, and soton have 5 players vying for three spots

And Redmond has played two completely different positions in both games

                So nothing is certain

Anyone who has watched soton in pre season should know that

Even more relevant when you consider that the transfer window still will be open for another month

Many comings and goings and transfers between epl clubs

I think the euros and Copa America centenario may be to blame for late transfers this season along with the fact that the new tv deal money means other clubs are playing hard ball with the prem clubs when it comes to transfers

Few bits I am not sure about:

Shaqiri for me is far too inconsistent to be in my fantasy team. He turns up when he feels like it. I would go for Bojan instead if your looking at Stoke. I also do not think Gabriel will get much game time and I would go for a nailed on option with kinder opening fixtures.
