Captains

Captain Poll – Gameweek 3

This morning we take a look at our latest captain poll, assessing the likely favourites for the armband in Gameweek 3.

You can find the poll in the middle column of the homepage or at the bottom of the homepage on mobile. Remember, we are looking for your vote for the player you think will be most effective, regardless of whether you own them or not.

We predicted that Sergio Aguero (13.1) and Zlatan Ibrahimovic (11.6) would slug it out at the summit of the Gameweek 2 captain poll. They not only dominated voting but both excelled, bringing in a brace, maximum bonus and a 26-point Fantasy Premier League haul to those who chose to captain them.

We expect more of the same this Gameweek as Manchester City’s Aguero hosts a West Ham side that has looked disjointed due to injuries so far this campaign.

Meanwhile, the Manchester United frontman, who at 51% ownership has overtaken the 50.2% owned Aguero as FPL’s most popular player, visits a Hull side that have won both their opening fixtures. In the big Swede’s favour, the Tigers have conceding the third highest number of shots in the box of any Premier League side to date.

However, there could be a third protagonist to upset this duo’s dominance, with the 22.9% owned Eden Hazard (10.1) bringing in attacking points in both matches under Antonio Conte. The Chelsea wide man entertains a Burnley outfit that have conceded more shots than any side this season.

For those eyeing up a differential armband candidate, Southampton midfielders Dusan Tadic (7.4) and Nathan Redmond (6.1) look ideally placed. Although Tadic has yet to register attacking returns, his strong underlying statistics suggest that could change when Sunderland visit. The Serbian’s ownership in FPL is now down to just 4.6% after being discarded by more than 42,000 managers.

Nathan Redmond, who sits in 11% of FPL managers’ sides, has a goal to his name already and looks set to profit from his out of position striker role in this potentially prosperous encounter.

Ibrahimovic’s team mate Paul Pogba (8.5) offers another intriguing alternative armband option, following a strong debut in Gameweek 2 at home to Southampton.

After two matches without a goal, the 16.4% owned Harry Kane (11.0) will be lucky to register significant interest. The Spurs striker has continued to struggle in front of goal without the suspended Mousa Dembele in the side and, in Gameweek 2, his star waned further when he was forced into a number 10 role to accommodate Vincent Janssen (8.0), who was Tottenham’s most attacking player against Crystal Palace. Visitors Liverpool have already shipped five goals this season, but it could be the 1.9% owned Janssen who prospers rather than Kane.

Another of last season’s stars to fall out of favour this term is Leicester’s Riyad Mahrez, who has been jettisoned by 35,000 FPL managers already this Gameweek on the back of two relatively poor displays from last season’s champions. A home tie against Swansea, however, could be the ideal fixture for the 27.9% owned midfielder to prove he is worthy of a price hike to 9.5 this season.

      Jaku for save points.
Lose 3-0 and make 12 saves. He gets 5pts + some BPs!

Heaton would have the better chance at a clean sheet and is a save point magnet.

I'm starting him over Jaku and also starting Hazard, so predicting Haz pen 1-0 win and Heaton save points giving him 4pts which I'll be content with.

Martial is expensive (9.5) but has only 9% ownership.
I haven't really watched much of the Man U games so far.
Is Martial getting far enough forward to score goals? Or might he be restricted to assisting Zlatan, Rooney and others?

Martial seemed an obvious buy at the start of the season.
Classed as a midfielder, but plays in attack. Then Man U signed Zlatan...

    4. Rains of Castamere

He's a good choice. Zlatan and Rooney often drop deep and it's up to Martial to provide the penetrative runs in behind. Shaw gallops up the wing too when Martial moves central. Our left side is crucial to the way we play.

He'll score goals this season, but at his price I'd want the player to be on some set pieces at least and he is not.

I think he is a super talent and has the potential to be the next Henry, but with competition from Ozil, Payet, Mahrez etc, he has been overpriced by fpl this season with no set pieces.

Maybe they think his potential for multiple assists in this MU team makes up for the lack of set pieces, but I'd need to see more before bringing him in.

Ladies and gentlemen, your thoughts please:

    Option A: Carroll - Gray
    Option B: Firmino & Carroll - Barkley & Gray
    Option C: Firmino & Carroll - Barkley & Benteke.

Currently on Option A as gives Firmino a chance to shine in a big game (as he - and Liverpool - often do). And have Capoue so can choose between him and Gray to start. Option C is v tempting though.....

For that 19pts difference he's almost inside the top 500! - What i'm saying is overall ranks are very stretched atm with just a few points making thousands of places up, so don't be disheartened if you've got a good team with a 100,000k rank.

Here's my latest view on Boro's attacking options:

    Strikers
Negredo - Nailed, no more to be said on that front. BUY/HOLD

Stuani - A favourite of Karanka's. Always plays wide right and before christmas last season looked to be an excellent player, ghosting in from the right and poaching goals (see his second yesterday. His first yesterday was news to us!!). Got injured around January last year and lost his form and his place, before surprisingly being picked on the last day and getting the vital goal. One to monitor definitely becasue of his goal threat, but still very much a rotation risk. MONITOR/HOLD

Rhodes - I predicted pre-season that we would only see him when we need a goal and we haven't had that scenario yet. Wasn't in the squad yesterday due to a 'family bereavement'. If he doesn't get minutes in the cup on Wednesday, then he will be off. SELL

Nugent - If Rhodes leaves, there will be a replacement come in who would usurp Nugent as the number 2 striking option. Until then expect some neat one pointers. SELL

    Midfielders
Fischer - He's currently in training being taught how to track back. He will play on Wednesday against Fulham and if he does well I suspect we'll see him on the pitch at some point against Palace in GW4, providing that the game is going well. SELL/MONITOR

Adomah - Lost his place to Stuani, though expect rotation. In all honesty the chances he's had so far he hasn't really taken. He needs to up his game, fast. SELL

Downing - More Mr Reliable, than Mr Explosive. Not a great fantasy asset at this stage in his career. Nailed on until Fischer tells him otherwise. Keeps possession well for us and that will be a big thing for our front four this season. HOLD

Gaston Ramirez - For us owners, it was a shame he was subbed on 59. But don't panic, he's still very much our number 10 and will reward those that hold him over the coming weeks. He was double teamed in possession and struggled to make an impact, Adomah in theory offered more energy off the bench. BUY/HOLD

One to watch -DEF Emilio N'Sue...not neccesarily in the short term, but the medium term. Now that Ayala is fit he will drop into CB next to Gibson, and the hugely impressive Barragan will revert to right back at the expense of N'Sue. N'Sue at this level, is going to be suspect defensively but this is a guy that played as an attacking midfielder in Spain and plays number 10 for his country (albeit I don't think Equitaorial Guinea have a deluge of number 10s). As the season progresses, if Adomah fails to step up and Stuani's lack of pace hampers us against certain opponents, expect to see N'sue pushed up into an attacking right position. If you own him, hold him as a 4th/5th defender. HOLD/MONITOR

Friend is an essential for every squad!

Now that Ayala is back, expect the clean sheets to follow and overlapping full backs are vital to the way we play and Friend is integral to that. He has a fantastic engine, but his final ball needs work.

I expect that to improve, he's a consummate professional who's improved every part of his game over the past few years so he will be working on that.

It would be churlish of me to say that we won't concede, however if Boro had a list of 'potential clean sheets', away to WBA and home to Palace would be fairly high on that list, I would say. Especially with Ayala back...

Yes, N'Sue is the one who will make way for Ayala, with Barragan going to RB. Just a heads up that he could become a good OOP option and be pushed up field at some point

Just saw this on an FFS line up lessons post - "Karanka, as shown against Sunderland, likes to rotate his attacking midfield options, so Adomah may come back into the fold against the Baggies".
What do you make of it?

He'll only rotate so long as nobody makes themselves undroppable.

I would say Stuani has the shirt for Sunday.

In the past, yes there's been rotation but that's been as much to do with a lack of form as anything else. We saw at the back end of the season Adomah playing pretty much every game from January because he was playing so well, and Ramirez was only rotated out once for a midweek game.

FWIW Adomah played against Stoke and was quite poor, and came on against Sunderland and kept losing possession, so it's not a surprise to see him not be nailed on.

On the other hand Downing has looked extremely solid (not spectacular) and therefore at this stage looks nailed because of it

Seen a lot of people playing wildcards this week. Surely this is a waste when their are hardly any standout options at present?

I understand people wanting to rush Ibra in but apart from him, Kun, Hazard and Shaw/Valencia it seems crazy to play it this early. Better of waiting

Everytime I wait with WC, I loose both funds and points...

If you lead the leagues by 10+ points then ok, but if not, if you want to hang in there you should WC

      We have another WC coming.

I used WC this week, in that WC I incorporated possible moves for ANY of the possible big hitters (Tadic, Nolito, Martial etc.) so I feel I am ahead of anybody who didn't WC

Fair enough if you have really planned it out. I just think that leaving it a few weeks more would make it a much more effectvie move and avoid point hits at a later date.

I just think people panic when they are a few points behind at the start of the season and not a lot of the wildcard teams that I have seen have structured their teams to account for big hitters. A midfield of Hazard Lamela, Barkley, Bolassie and Capoue will be hard to re-jig to fit in Ozil, Payet?, Martial or whoever else when they start firing

I think they look really good picks with their attacking potential. I think they have strong clean sheet potential against anyone and the fixtures are pretty decent.

I agree though that other defenders (Tottenham?) could be equally as effective

Anyone else with Gray as their 3rd striker thinking of playing a 3-5-2 this week?

Capoue's points on the bench have been painful to see the last 2 weeks, and Gray at the Bridge doesn't have me thinking he'll be racking up the points...

Gray is going to be involved in the majority of Burnley's goals. I would say he's a much better pick than Capoue (I've got both). Making selections based solely on last week's scores isn't a great idea.

      My team for GW3:

      De Gea
      Valencia / Terry / Stones
      Hazard / Tadic / Lamela / Mirallas
      Agüero / Kane / Gray

Subs: Jakupovic / Fletcher / Friend / Amat

(Got Mirallas in for Noble after GW2).

      Current OR: 528K

My plan has been to WC after GW3, and I think my team looks good enough for GW3 not to take hits or even using the WC just to get in Zlatan.

I'm at 742,000. Not great. I think the big call was whether to include Zlatan and weaken midfield or include some more big hitters in midfield. So far, Zlatan's done well, midfield big-hitters haven't. Maybe, my hatred for Utd led me astray. It's served me well the last few years though ; )

        2 FT
        Current midfield
        Hazard/Redmond/Lamela/Firmino

        A. Firmino & Lamela >> Coutinho & Mirallas/Bolasie
        B. Firmino > Barkley
        C. Save FT

        Any suggestions???
