Tracking The Fantasy Football Veterans – Gameweek 4

Welcome to my latest look at how Fantasy Premier League’s most experienced managers are doing this season. Each week I’ll be checking in on a group of 50 veterans, made up of FFScout contributors, Hall of Fame leaders and former winners, to see how they are doing compared to the top 10,000 managers and in the overall rankings.

This week’s update is heavily focused on chip use, after more than 50% of these Fantasy stalwarts used there’s ahead of Gameweek 4.

CHIPS

On average those managers who used their wildcard before Gameweek 4 scored almost eight points more than those that didn’t.

A key reason is that they didn’t take the hits non-wildcarders did to squeeze in popular, expensive picks such as Alexis Sanchez or Romelu Lukaku.  These tables offer a further insight into why this week was a good one for wildcarding.

TOP STARTING PLAYERS

These tables show that non-wildcarders were forced to hang on to poorly performing popular early picks for the veterans, most notably ‘Boro’s George Friend. The same  happened with John Stones from Manchester City.

Meanwhile, wild carders had the freedom to freshen up their defence and bring in Everton defenders in particular. Both Leighton Baines and Ashley Williams rewarded the wild carders with clean sheet points. Baines also did well in terms of bonus points.

In the midfield another early stinker for the veterans Southampton’s Nathan Redmond was jettisoned by the wild carders. He once again blanked. Meanwhile, popular replacement Michail Antonio from West Ham is the third most popular starting midfielders in wildcarded teams and rewarded them handsomely with a brace at home to Watford.

Up front only one veteran clung onto the suspended Sergio Aguero. Popular replacements such as Romelu Lukaku did well for all veterans but wild carders had the luxury of using this chip to also jettison Burnley’s Andre Gray, who blanked once again.

CAPTAINS

– Eden Hazard (CHE): 88%

– Harry Kane (TOT): 4%

Eden Hazard brought home a one-point return and disappointed the veterans this week.

OVERALL RANKINGS

– Maximum points: 68

– Biggest rank improvements: 798,060 places

Thanks to savvy use of wildcards the veterans are on the march up the rankings once gain. After Gameweek 4, the average overall position of all 50 veteran teams is 423,732 – 70,976 places better than after Gameweek 3.

Among the Veterans, 60% gained a green arrow, while 40% saw red. The veterans’ average Gameweek 4 score was 47.38 points (after hits), which was higher than the top 10,000 average (39.1 points) and the overall average (41.5 after hits).

BEAT THE VETERANS

The safety score for Gameweek 4 was 21 points. Stano Svetkovský had the highest score – 93 points.

Kavali `In Italy for 30 years under the Borgias they had warfare, terror, murder, and bloodshed, but they produced Michelangelo, Leonardo da Vinci, and the Renaissance. In Switzerland they had brotherly love - they had 500 years of democracy and peace, and what did that produce? The cuckoo clock.`

I was certainly a happy wildcarder. Five extra goals that chip earned me.

    Onwards and upwards fellow veterans!

I was surprised to see so many captain Hazard when the poll was split 50/50 with Sanchez.

Just one veteran captained Sanchez. 🙂

This week will be very interesting.

      I think
      35 % Ibra
      35 % Lukaku
      20% Sanchez
10% - mix of others with a few hazards and one or two iheanachos.

The overall captaincy will be higher for Ibra, but less for Lukaku and Sanchez so it'll be those last two that will determine the veterans average most likely.

I think that more than a few will captain Iheanacho because many veterans will use their WC in GW6 and this is a great chance to bring Kelechi in GW5 and try something really different. But most of the veterans will captain Lukaku for sure.

Hi Jonty, do you consider captaining lukaku over Ibra a risk with the 50% difference in ownership ?

Love this article, my favourite after the big numbers one.

The slightly homo-erotic picture at the top adds to the whole secret society of "veterans" mistique too 😀

Will be interesting to see how the wc teams this week score v the non wc teams too. I always say you can't judge a wc on the gw it is played as if you are not setting your team up for a run of games then it is a bad wc. I would take a poor wc gw score if I killed it in the next 5 gws rather than a mega wc gw score and struggling with hits etc for the following 5 gws.
Could you do a table next week so we can see the "legacy" effect of playing a wc?

I can try. But the point was to see who are the most popular players amongst those veterans who click WC button, not their score. Cheers.

Yeah I get that and it is a great article.

I would love if someone did this for a sample of managers and their wcs though. I don't think people ever get a feel for how much of a boost a wc can be. You have a perfect sample here and it would only mean collecting data for one more week. Maybe you could do a seperate one off article on wc gw4 and non wc gw4. I'd say a lot of the other vets will wc gw6 to get kun back so we will likely only get two weeks data but it could be very interesting.

Homo-erotic? I've never looked at it as anything but a couple of old mates enjoying a football game. Unbelievable... 🙄

Clearly the guy on the right with the lipstick has unrequited feelings for the lad on the left but they both share a love of the game (or maybe I'm reading too much into it lol)
