Scout Notes – International Round Up

Sergio Aguero declares himself fit, Belgians make hay and two midfield heavyweights star for the French in Monday’s international matches.

AGUERO FIT – AND KEEN TO PLAY

Great news for Sergio Aguero (13.1) owners – he’s not injured after all. Bad news for Sergio Aguero owners – he wants to play against Paraguay in the early hours of Wednesday morning.

The Manchester City striker is close to becoming the most popular Fantasy Premier League pick, with only Zlatan Ibrahimovic (11.5) owned by more than the Argentinian’s 43.3%. A brave/foolhardy 62,000+ managers have even drafted him in since GW7, despite Aguero’s previous form for getting injured on international duty.

Deja vu was certainly in the air when reports surfaced that a calf problem picked up in the 2-2 draw against Peru might be more serious than initially thought.

But now Aguero himself has played down the issue.

“You always want to play in the national team and try to do the best, and for now I feel good physically. We did tests, they were good and I’m trying to get as fresh as possible for Tuesday. Last season, for wanting to continue, I ended up injured against Ecuador. Sometimes you think ‘why didn’t I stop?’ Because then I’m out for a month and a half and I miss six or seven games for City. But when they call you for the national team, you want to play. That’s how it is.

With a home match versus Everton coming on Saturday, City coach Pep Guardiola and more than 1,660,000 FPL managers will have to endure Aguero’s admirable patriotism for another long 90 minutes.

No such luck for the 3.4% with Bacary Sagna (5.4) in their squads – the French full back limped out of the 4-1 win over Bulgaria on Friday with a hamstring problem and will be sidelined until at least early November.

BELGIAN BONANZA

It’s a good time to be a Christian Benteke (7.6) owner.

The Crystal Palace striker is in fine form, with three goals in his last four league outings, and he made history in Belgium’s 6-0 rout of Gibraltar last night by scoring after just seven seconds.

Having netted the fastest-ever World Cup goal, he then went on to bag a hat-trick.

Okay, so it was only Gibraltar, but when Benteke is in-form and confident, there aren’t many strikers better, so 6.9% of FPL managers will be rubbing their hands ahead of Palace’s home match against a struggling West Ham on Saturday – the Hammers have conceded nine goals in three away matches to date.

After that, the fixtures are a mixed bag for Palace all the way up to the final international break of the year in November, with Liverpool at home and Leicester City and Burnley away, but an on-song Benteke tends to be a handful for any defence.

He only started against Gibraltar as a thigh problem kept Romelu Lukaku (9.4) on the bench.

At 22.2%, the Everton striker is the fourth most-owned FPL forward in the game, so his post-match tweet that it was ‘time to go home and recover from this little thigh problem’ will have come as some relief to many – over his use of the word ‘little’.

Lukaku has five goals and an assist from his last four league outings and, if fit, would fancy his chances of adding to that against a Man City defence that’s kept just one clean sheet all season.

Two other Belgians enjoyed themselves against Gibraltar.

Eden Hazard (9.9) followed up his strike against Bosnia and Herzegovina with another goal and an assist yesterday.

The 19.7% of managers who have stuck by him will hope that he can end his barren spell for Chelsea, during which he’s done nothing of note for the last four league matches, when Leicester visit Stamford Bridge on Saturday lunchtime.

And Burnley’s highest-scoring midfielder, Steven Defour (6.0), produced an assist. He has three of those, and a goal, in six starts for the Clarets.

Tottenham’s Toby Alderweireld (6.5) also supplied an assist, adding to his goal against Bosnia-Herzegovina on Friday.

PAYET AND POGBA PERFORM

Reports of Dimitri Payet’s (9.4) demise seem rather premature.

The West Ham midfielder might not yet have scaled the Olympian heights he managed last season, but he has still served up four assists and a wonder goal in four league starts and provided the pass that led to France’s goal in the 1-0 win in Holland.

Palace and Everton away and home matches with Sunderland and Stoke await Payet.

France’ goal came from Paul Pogba (8.3). With 9.9% ownership figures, he remains Manchester United’s most popular midfielder by some margin, but a goal in the GW6 rout of Leicester is his only significant contribution thus far.

Even if his form is on the up, away matches against Liverpool and Chelsea suggest now is not yet the time to splash out on the world’s most expensive player.

Bellerin Boost for Gunners

Arsenal’s Hector Bellerin (6.5) shrugged off an ankle problem to play from start to finish in Spain Under 21s 5-0 win over Estonia.

The right-back was rated doubtful heading into last night’s match and his recovery will be music to the ears of a healthy 25% ownership – making him the third most popular defender in FPL.

Bellerin also sits third in the defender standings and with clashes against Swansea, Middlesbrough and Sunderland up next, looks well placed for further returns at both ends of the pitch.

Fantasy Football Scout daily hot topic

    Gameweek 8 and beyond frontlines.

Who are the best three strikers to own for Gameweek 8 and the next six or so matches?

Given that Aguero will be in most teams who will take the next two places?

Is it worth ignoring Costa's 4 yellows and look instead at his excellent form and the way Chelsea are geared up to provide for him?

What of Lukaku? With City and Burnley away next will he be worth his price tag?

Or is 3-5-2 the way to go and focus on midfield?

And what of those third striker candidates like Benteke, Defoe and Deeney? Which or how many of these will be in your team?

I have Tekkers, Ibra and Aguero and am considering Ibra out for Deeney or even Costa. Just love the way Chelsea want him to score - just don't get that sense with Ibra.

        Deeney looks great value too.

You're basing this idea that United don't want Zlatan to score as much as Chelsea do Costa on the former's lack of FPL returns. Watching United and paying attention to your beloved stats would show you that this just isn't true.

Perhaps its more that they are not capable of ensuring he scores. At times Man U have looked like the Van Gaal era team of last year. Taking Rooney out helps. I think Chelsea have better chance creators on current evidence.

But I hope I'm wrong as more than likely I 'll keep Ibra as first week after an international break can be a minefield with injuries and rotation. I know Ibra will play and I know Liverpool are incapable of keeping clean sheets so he certainly has those in his favour.

      Tough!

I have Lukaku, Costa and Kun right now - all out power, I always favour a front line that's worth £30m+

However, it means that I've got a fairly imbalanced team, with Capoue functioning as a 4th mid and only Walker as a premium defender (albeit flanked by 5.0s in Willams/Lovren).

I'm thinking of doing Bellerin in now, so I will have to eventually lose one of the front men - perhaps whenever Diego Costa gets his 4th yellow.

But it's such a tough call - they're the three I'd always want as they're the biggest heavy hitters that will be contesting the Golden Boot (unless Kane shows up once recovered from his injury)

Oh, and I'd be looking at one of Austin / Deeney / Tekkers / Wilson in should I downgrade one of them.

Austin is probably the prime value pick - 6.3 for the main striker at a mid-level club like southampton constitutes a major steal for me, though I will always have a soft spot for Tekkers I think the extra 1.3m I'd pocket will help me elsewhere and be the difference between, say, getting Snodgrass in or Son in...

Aguero, Costa (already have both) & Defoe who I'll get this week. People saying Sun are poor & yes they have scored 6 goals out of 7 matches yet Defoe is the 4th highest scoring forward on 38 points behind Costa (46 pts), Lukaku (42) & Aguero (39).
Sunderland have stoke & whu in the next 2 who are 2 of the worst defenses re goals conceded. Defoe can scored against anyone & when he scores he gets bonus points.

Lukaku over Costa. Likely similar returns with cash saved. Austin the best 3rd for me. 7m+ is luxury territory for a third. Austin is class (QPR will agree), is a million cheaper and plays in a better team than Defoe and Deeney.

Could have big implications for how Liverpool set up, especially if Lallana is out as well. Milner in midfield perhaps? More central midfield role for Coutinho? Or perhaps they'll play with Sturridge up top and go for a more defensive pivot?

      1. El-Kloppico
        • 8 Years
        7 years, 7 months ago

I think Emre Can will step in the place of Gini, beside Hendo. Milner will keep his LB position, while Studge might start alongside Mane - Couts - Firmino. But all will depend on the 2 Brazilians fitness when they return.

    2. Individual
      • 10 Years

Can see RF ending up out wide where Lallana was playing, and Milner popping into central midfield if Lallana and Wijnaldum are both out - Moreno to return at LB, Sturridge to begin to start.

As a Firmino owner, I'm hoping it means he's a bit more liberated to cause havoc and get more consistent returns vs. his false 9 role, which seems more changeable - still think he's the man in the Liverpool midfield to own because Klopp loves him and he always seems to do well, plus every time he looks like he's walking in to the last chance saloon he proves himself 🙂

What do we all reckon for capt?!

Am tempted to put it on Costa again after last gameweek - only reticence is that I kind of buy into the "never capt in the early game" 'myth' because I think it can potentially ruin your weekend if it goes wrong, rather than because there's less goals in those games.

Sanchez and Kun are the other possibilities for me, but I'm worried about fatigue after international.

For Sanch, AW has shown he'll bench him if he feels he needs resting). Swansea are also a bit of a bogey team for us (Arsenal).

Kun + GW8 is always magical... will see if he comes through the game vs. Paraguay and he might end up with the armband due to my aversion to early captaincy and also sentimental reasons haha

      Arnie + Wally (1) / Son (2)

Arnie - those fixtures are just a dream. I can't quite afford him with the other move I want to make (Arsenal defender in) so I'm going with Shaqiri probably, but if I could I'd get him

Wally - depends on if you have double Arsenal / any Arsenal already. If you have 2x Arsenal, I'd maybe do Son in. If you don't, Wally. Those 3 fixtures could see him score 30+ points.

Captain Picks: Aguero vs Alexis - Will They Play

    Alexis Sanchez

    Alexis Sanchez's schedule now:

Thu 6th Oct: Ecuador vs Chile
Wed 12th Oct: Chile vs Peru
Sat 15th Oct: Arsenal vs Swansea (GW8)
Wed 19th Oct: Arsenal vs Ludogorets

Alexis Sanchez's schedule when he got rested:

Fri 2nd Sep: Paraguay vs Chille
Wed 7th Sep: Chille vs Bolivia
Sat 10th Sep: Arsenal vs Southampton (rested)
Tue 13th Sep: PSG vs Arsenal

He has the same amount of games, but this time he has 2 extra days rest overall, plus the CL game is against Ludgorets - thus little need for Wenger to save him for that game.

    Sergio Aguero

Picked up a little injury, but now insists he is available to play for Argentina's 2nd international game. The game takes place just after midnight tonight (00:30 GMT). We will know much more by then.

It's worth noting that City have Barca midweek in the CL on the Wednesday after GW8. De Bruyne is expected back also.

    Conclusion
Those are the straight facts, but in my opinion, I think both Sanchez and Aguero will start in GW8, with both potentially substituted off in the 2nd half if their team is winning comfortably.
De Bruyne is expected back, but I can see Pep being careful with him and introducing him in the 2nd half as opposed to starting him.

It's true that Pogba is facing both Liverpool and Chelsea away from home, but both these teams are far from solid. Even though Man U haven't been that convincing playing away (bar the Bournemouth game), I think it could be worth the risk gambling on Pogba now if you have the funds. His stats in the past two games are good and I reckon his performance for France will only boost him more heading towards the Liverpool game. I know guys are more concerned with fitting in Son and Walcott, which makes complete sense, but I personally think Paul will be a beast in the next few games. This is pretty subjective. Just sharing my thoughts. 🙂

In your team who do you have that you consider not "following the crowd" or could be labelled a "sheep" on this site. They can be highly owned but it is picks you consider.

Only one for me is Costa.

Perhaps Son, Holebas, Deeney, Pickford but they are touted quite a lot on here.

        Keep Costa or Bin..

I want to keep him but people on here are against to some degree,

        Benteke is only owned by 6.9 % of the game , Redmond 6.8 , Firmino 10 .2 % , I had Koscienly last week and he is 12.1 .

I'm getting a striker and milf from:

          Tadic/Arnatovic
          Wilson/Austin

Austin is the highest owned of the above lot @4.7%

Arnie v Tadic is the same decision for me this week. Thinking Arnie because of fixtures, austin taking pens from Tadic and Boxing Day last year being one of my rare good points in the season.

I've read some Saints forums and I'm worried with possible rotation with Austin/Tadic now that Long is injured. They have Inter next week.

Also Wilson has HULL/SUN/stoke. Can't argue with that.

Pretty keen for PVA but his position looks at risk...Moyes said he's best played as Wing Back but also says he might not play him .....

I've seen Moyes' comments about liking him as an attacker (not a wing back as Moyes won't play 3 at the back) but not that he won't play him. To my mind he tried to assert some discipline for acumulated off-the-field actions and also for really poor defending leading to two of the goals they conceded against Palace, but that is all. I've little doubt that he's among Sunderland's most important players, and Moyes can't afford to drop him. That's not even taking into account the goal he got off the bench last game. He starts and plays 90.

Jason Puncheon. I may well be the only person here with him in an FPL team.

Benteke - I get hipster points for drafting him in some weeks ago.

Patrick Van Aanholt my latest. No one will have him due to rotation risk, but I'm rolling the dice on more goals off the bench.

My word, I appear to have gone dangerously off template this season. Need to get back in with the flock I think. 😉

Although the winners of FPL tend to win because they do exactly that.

I can't think of a single FPL winner of the years who has won by avoiding the template.

I haven't finished outside of the top 10K in years through playing dull.

...tho, must admit I am enjoying my more maverick mindset this season, even though it will be ultimately doomed. 😉

There's a big difference between ending up at a top 10k finish and having a running start and winning the game though. I'd argue that all of the winners without exception, even anyone thats ever been within reach of winning it, has been in that position thanks to the risks they took more than the trends they followed. As with anything its about finding the balance.

Even last year's leader was late to the Leicester party - his victory was early Kane interest and captaining him alot. When Kane started firing his rank shot up. Captaining one of the previous season's highest scorers wasn't exactly a maverick move, especially as Kane was highly owned.

Previous seasons captaining Suarez, RVP, Aguero all helped as well. When you are in the top 10 you realise that you are in a minileague and have to employ certain tactics to outwit those around you. Often that requires matching their 'good player'.

Captaining one of the previous season's highest scorers may not have been exactly a maverick move, but it must have been something that his rivals didn't do, or it would not by itself have allowed him to overtake them.

If you need to overtake players above you then you need to do something different. If you are already on top then you may be able to stay there by playing safe and matching their good players - but if you play it too safe and you have more than one rival then one of them may overtake you by taking a risk that comes off, and you might also miss the chance to increase your lead. Matching your rivals' teams may avoid big drops, but it might also cause you to miss the opportunity for big rises.

But yes like you say, I think it's above all important to have fun with the game, and for me that means sometimes picking the riskier option in spite of my better judgement.

Yep, that's what it comes down to. I think people forget it is a game at times.

So for example last week I did terribly, but PVA a player I got in and hardly anyone else owned scored. These small victories are all part of the game.

Yep that PVA goal saved my bacon too, Adam Smith waiting in the wings. This is the time of the season to take a few risks though. Gamble a bit to try and jockey some sort of a position then even it out once everything's settled a little. A bit like a formula one race. At the beginning you can play the template and stick to your grid position somewhat or stick your neck out a bit and either crash and burn or make some ground.

Having said that though I wish I hadn't captained Andre Gray and Lamela instead of Aguero/Zlatan weeks 1 and 2. I've been captaining differentials ever since to try and make up for it. An Austin double hattrick from Tadic's seven assists this week should scratch the itch and I'll go back to normal.

The winners get the template before it is known to be the template. Every other template chaser is then left playing catch up.

Got 2 FTs and consequently some headache about what I should do. Any feedback is appreciated!

          A) Rondon -> Austin (or Wilson)
          B) Rondon -> Diomande + Williams -> Mustafi (+1m in the bank)

          A) will enable me to play 3-4-3 and I like the possibility of playing a decent 3rd striker. B) yields a 4-4-2 or 3-5-2 formation, but the 1m in the bank can be used to upgrade Antonio or Sterling in the upcoming gameweeks.

          A) Antonio & Ibra to Sanchez & Benteke (2 FTs)
          B) Valencia, Antonio & Ibra to Bellerin, Sanchez, Austin (-4)

If I go A, it gives me no cash ITB to upgrade my awful defence. I could go B but not take a hit and wait until next week to get Bellerin?

          Current team is:
          Pickford, Foster
          Valencia, Baines, Friend, McAuley, Amat
          Antonio, Sterling, Firmino, Snodgrass, Capoue
          Ibrahimovic, Aguero, Lukaku
