Welcome to the new FFS community team tournament – the Fantasy Chili Bowl (FCB). The newly formed FCB Committee are delighted to announce this new tournament where US-based franchise teams containing the finest FPL players compete for a place in the grand final – the Texas Chili Bowl – which will take place the same weekend as Superbowl weekend in early February 2017.
Who is it for?
This is for anybody in the FFScout community with an official FPL team. Whether this is your first season here or whether you’ve been playing Fantasy Football since the David Baddiel and Frank Skinner days, you are eligible to play.
How will it work?
The Fantasy Chili Bowl will start off with 24 squads of either six or eight players (TBC in due course), who will field a team of either five or six players each week (again, TBC), with the non-players on the substitute’s bench. A team’s score each week will be the sum of the FPL scores of the playing players the team fields.
In the “regular season” there will be four conferences of head to head competitions involving six teams. The team with the highest aggregate score in each match wins.
After everyone in each conference plays each other, the top two teams from each conference will then qualify for the play-offs in the new year, which will be a straight knock-out.
When does the tournament run?
The regular season will run in Gameweeks (GWs) 12, 13, 14, 15 and 17 (i.e. the five GWs that occur after the November international break and before Christmas). There will then be a break for Christmas and the New Year before the play-offs, where the quarter finals will take place in GW21, the semi finals in GW22, and then the final showpiece, the Texas Chili Bowl, in GW24.
How are the teams picked?
The first step is to appoint the 24 captains, which will be selected before squad selection officially starts – the 24 will be selected by the FCB committee based on a number of factors including previous similar tournament captaincy/participation and FFS board activity – the reason it is being done this way is not to make this a “closed shop” – it is to try and avoid the occurrence of “ghost teams”, i.e. teams where communication between the players stops and the team just ends up drifting through the competition. That scenario isn’t much fun in a community competition, and can make the final stages somewhat farcical.
Once the 24 captains are selected, they will each be emailed a list of circa 50 possible US City locations for their teams for which they will then pick their top three preferences.
On receipt of all the requests, the captains will then be assigned a team location (hopefully) from one of their three choices, and they will be free to then choose their (clean) franchise name (there will be no repeat franchise names, so no multiple teams with the word ‘Jaguars’ in it.
Squad selection can then officially start, with the deadline for squads being submitted at some point during the November international break.
How do I apply to be a captain?
Simply email the FCB Committee mailbox fantasychilibowl@gmail.com if you would like to apply to be a captain.
Please provide your FFS username, your FPL ID, and a brief message regarding your experience of involvement in previous similar tournaments, such as the FIFFSA tournament last season, and any other information you feel is relevant. Please do not compose an essay-length heart-felt begging letter – it isn’t necessary!
The deadline for applying to be a captain will be no earlier than the end of October (actual date TBC).
How do I join a team as a non-captain?
The captains will be free to pick their squads whatever way they want to, but there will be a form anyone who wishes to play can fill out and return to the FCB mailbox. Your information will then be put on a spreadsheet that all captains will have constant visibility of.
Captains will be strongly encouraged to pick players from the whole FFScout spectrum to include those who apply through this method.

Is that a mouse I hear squeaking? No it's David Beckham squealing with excitement about a Us Soccer tournament.
