The Stock Check – Gameweek 9 – Sunday

Chelsea’s midfielders “do a Liverpool” and rack up big hauls in an emphatic home win over Manchester United. Sergio Aguero returns to the Manchester City starting line-up but draws yet another blank, while Zlatan Ibrahimovic again falls short as United are humbled at the Bridge. Here’s the Stock Check following Sunday’s matches…

On the Rise

Eden Hazard
While Diego Costa surprisingly failed to play a part in any of Chelsea four goals, Hazard notched for the second successive Gameweek to continue his recent renaissance.

The Blues’ recent change in shape has been key to the Belgian’s improvement – only Arsenal’s Theo Walcott has managed more shots in the box from midfield since Antonio Conte ditched his four-man defensive set-up.

At a time where rotation has recently hit hard following European matches, the fact that Chelsea are focused purely on domestic matters may yet persuade some to reconsider a resurgent Hazard.

Costa, meanwhile, also managed to avoid a booking today, leaving him on four yellows ahead of Wednesday’s EFL Cup clash with West Ham United. If he’s cautioned in that one, he’ll miss next weekend’s Gameweek 10 trip to Southampton.

Nemanja Matic
The Chelsea stopper has been transformed under Conte this season and continues to offer a steady source of creativity from the centre of the park.

Matic managed just three assists last season, but he’s already up to five this time around after teeing up Hazard for the Blues’ third. That’s the same number as Dimitri Payet and second only to Kevin De Bruyne’s six.

All five assists have arrived in the last seven Gameweeks as the Serb steadily improves in the 3-4-3 formation. Priced at 5.0, Matic has suddenly become an unlikely option for the fifth midfielder slot.

The Chelsea Defence
Conte’s men made it three wins and a trio of clean sheets since moving to a 3-4-3 formation.

Gary Cahill and Marcos Alonso highlighted their points potential with goal and assist respectively, earning both players bonus in the Red Devils’ thrashing.

Alonso has been the standout performer since Conte’s tactical switch and looks the man to monitor. He sits first for attempts on goal amongst defenders from Gameweek 7 onwards and is ranked second for key passes thanks to his role as a raiding left wing-back.

Nathan Redmond
Redmond’s underlying numbers have already been impressive over the season due to his role up top for Southampton.

One goal in the first seven shows he’d been failing to tuck away his chances but Sunday’s Etihad strike, added to last week’s goal against Burnley, suggests that Redmond’s form and confidence is on the ascent.

Having dropped to just 5.9 in the FPL, he is clearly a tempting prospect. However, the Saints’ schedule is testing, with Chelsea and Liverpool looming in the next three.

Also, the introduction of new boy Sofiane Boufal also adds to Claude Puel’s options in attack. The intentions for the club-record signing are not yet clear but we can presume a starting role beckons. It remains to be seen how this shakes up the Saints’ teamsheet.

In Decline

Sergio Aguero
The striker returned to the starting XI after a couple of appearances off the bench, but there’s no doubt that Aguero was nowhere near his best against the Saints, with all three of his attempts off target.

The Argentine remains the most popular player in FPL – sitting in 44% of squads; he was also the top pick for this weekend’s captaincy.

But Sunday’s blank means that Aguero has now failed to score in four of his last five league appearances. With the goals suddenly drying up for City (they’ve scored twice in four in all competitions), Fantasy faith in the Etihad side is on the wane and Aguero and Raheem Sterling are taking the hit.

Aguero’s ownership fell ahead of Gameweek 9 and is already dropping following Sunday’s 1-point return.

Kevin De Bruyne
Replaced at half-time with a knock, the Belgian’s owners will take solace in the fact that Pep Guardiola has confirmed the problem is not serious. Given the recent uncertainty surrounding Aguero’s pitch time, some Fantasy managers have been considering De Bruyne as their go-to City attacker ahead of some kind upcoming fixtures. Confirmation that his withdrawal was not tactical will at least go some way to softening a disappointing one-point return.

John Stones
City’s run of dire defensive displays continued, with their big-money signing from Everton gifting Redmond the opener.

Guardiola’s side have kept one clean sheet this season, which, coincidentally, was the only league fixture that Stones has failed to start.

With Vincent Kompany now back in the fold, the 24%-owned defender now looks under threat – today’s benching of Nicolas Otamendi shows we cannot take anything for granted with Guardiola’s teamsheets.

Zlatan Ibrahimovic
The United veteran endured yet another disappointing day and has now scored just a single goal in his last seven league outings.

A home encounter with Burnley in Gameweek 10 may well be enough for many to hand him one last hurrah before reassessing their options.

The Clarets have conceded an average of three goals per road trip and, with 39% ownership, a big haul could still do damage to non-owners.

Many have already had enough, though – Ibrahimovic has already been subject to more transfers out than any forward ahead of Gameweek 10, having already lost 900,000 owners since Gameweek 5.

Why aren't we treating Aguero by the same standards we are treating other players? 2 points from 3 GWs is shocking return for a player like Fletcher let alone a 13.1m player who plays for City and who is always the favorite for the armband. Hazard started the season flying yet he was dropped instantly with the first signs of bad form. The same with Ibra (who has had good stats but was unlucky not to score in many occasions which is something Kun doesn't have). Even some people are contemplating dropping Sanchez now for Hazard or KDB (crazy I know) after 2 blanks in 3 where he returned 11 points not 2. Why aren't we looking at Kun with the same standard? I understand that he has been fantasy royalty in the past but so much has changed.

    1) City are playing a very different game under Pep where midfielders are the emphasis rather than the striker. Sterling and KDB have been better FPL picks than Kun so far this season.
    2) Kun is in bad form and low on confidence for club and country.
    3) As Ruth NZ said last week, Pep doesn't like a classic no9 so much. Or at least he doesn't make him the focal point of his attack. He falls out with him even when he is performing well and scoring. He asks him to do defensive work, drop deep to overload the midfield; which in FPL isn't good for their prospects.

One argument that I hear a lot here and also frequently from Mark on the scoutcast is that he is the only player that can score 5 goals in a game and missing on that woul be a disaster. This is an unrealistic claim in my opinion. How many 5 goal or 4 goal hauls has Kun scored in his whole career? He is no Messi or Ronaldo and epl is not la liga. Kun probably will not score 4 or 5 goals in a game again for the rest of his career.

It still worries me to go without him given City's fixtures and his ownership but having the balls to sell him now and assess later when he regains form could be a masterstoke. He has Utd in midweek in the cup, WBA away, Boro at home followed by international break again. Only Boro at home looks like a tasty fixture even though they proved to be resilient against Arsenal. I expect him to play most of the Utd play if not all of it. He along with other key assets like KDB and Sterling could be rested against WBA with Barca in midweek being a must win game. A loss against Barca and a win for Gladback makes qualification from the group very complicated.

This season has been very volatile with price changes and jumping on and off wagons at the right time is proving more important that ever. Who has the courage to go without Kun for the next month? Or even City-less for that matter?

Your post is better though. I've not had him for a while, flown up the rankings albeit from a lowly position. This season the money can be so well spent without him. Even when he gets his inevitable 20pt haul there's a chance the damage can be limited by kdb or Hazard or Costa or Sanchez

I wish I had moved on earlier with him. I didn't like his fom even when he was scoring because he was so dependent on penalties and didn't score much from open play and didn't get any assists.

Great article! Kun's gone and not coming back in the near future. Not even for 5 goals haul. the extra money will be invested in midfielders who provide better returns and there are many around.

Kun when firing and City firing is the closest thing to essential you will get. He is far from it at the moment and the schedule is hectic. You can live without him for the next month and assess after the international break.

If you don't have one of Costa and Lukaku then there is your replacement. Costa has proven to be fixture proof this season. Also if you do not have Sanchez like me, selling Kun is the easy way to ge him.

          Costa fixture proof? Really?

The only tough games I think he has faced this season are LIV 6pts, ars 1pts, MUN 2pts (I am not counting leicester as they have been an easy game when they are playing away for everyone this year).

That is 3ppg in the tough games compared to 8ppg in the other six gws.

Costa now heads into sou (tough at home especially), EVE (one of the least big chances conceded in the league this year), mid (again one of the best defences in the league as far as big chances goes this season as Arsenal just found out), TOT (one of the best defences in the league), mcy (conceding goals but not many chances, who is to say they might not be up to speed with peps tactics by then?).
That is a run of 6 tough games (maybe 5 if you think city will still be soft by come early December?).

Do you still think Costa is a good option or has he just scored well as Chelsea have had a very kind run fixture wise?

If you really consider EVE SOU MID as tough fixture then you ought to consider Leics a tough fixture as well. Costa had played on his own against Arsenal none of the other guys really showed up. And he was pretty unlucky to not score against MUN.

Leicester have conceded a shed load of goals away this season so far so no they have not been a tough fixture. Going forward they may sort themselves out but for this exercise we can only go on how they have played so far.

There is a lot of pshychology going on with selling Aguero, beyond the '4 or 5 goals at any time' argument. Nobody really likes 3 mil or so idling by doing nothing - so many of the managers who sell will do so because they have 2 FTs to reinvset the cash elsewhere or by taking a hit - and it'll be the same requirement for 2 FTs or a hit to bring him back. This is one of the main reasons why we don't see a volatile price for him.

I agree. But taking a hit to get him back with FTs isn't the end of the world. those who sold him 2 weeks ago and went for Costa instead probably gained something close to 30 points over those who kept Kun (captaincy factored in). A 4 point hit in this case doesn't matter much.

Those who didn't get him since his ban will be doing even better. There is a portion of managers who kept him on the bench when during his suspension.

The biggest obstacle mentally is that clearly man city have goals in them and when they do he so so likely to be at the forefront. Liverpool and Arsenal seem more likely to share the points

All very valid points that I don't necessarily disagree with, but the fact of the matter is that selling Aguero is a very risky strategy. It could pay off big time.......it could also backfire big time, so it's a case of whether or not you want to take such a big risk with your FPL season.

Personally I like to take my risks with budget differentials, not with my big investments.

It's your call, just make sure you're prepared to handle a huge swing in Rank either for or against you

People are living on past reputation. You are correct, Pep has a different style of play and Aguero isn't so much suited to this.

I am going to wait a couple of more games and if he blanks or under performs he is out for me. If he's dropped v brom this weekend he's gone then

The problem with dropping Aguero is his ownership. If he has a good week, which so far this season he has done in 3 of the 7 PL games hes played, it could be detrimental because a lot of his 44% ownership will have him as captain.

The point with Aguero is his history and the fact that this game sometimes take patience. Expect lots of managers are now seriously considering Aguero out but are waiting a little longer to take the plunge. Need to review Costa to see if he gets his final yellow but also KDB for alternative city coverage, need more info on both these points.

The problem here is with Aguero it is past reputation that keeps him in squads. Just think had you started with Costa,Sanchez, Mane and Walcott you'd likely be a darn site higher up the rankings than had you stuck with Aguero awaiting the big hall (which is what many, including Myself have done.)

I think sticking with non performing players can be a real disaster with your rank. Many (including Myself) think of Aguero as the go to guy. The man who you can bank on, but we are seeing under Pep this season that this may well no longer be the case. I still have him (and have had since GW1) but i am concerned about this bad dip in form, and also City's overall team form (which was far from great at the weekend.)

Lets see if he plays in the EFL game on Wednesday and what happens. If he blanks against WBA at the weekend i think the selling could really start in earnest.

What a crazy Season. Neither Ibra or Aguero are really doing much. Bring back the goal scoring machine that is Suarez i say!

"stuck with Aguero awaiting the big haul". This is where most of us get it wrong and need to change our thinking. We think that the big haul will likely to be a superhattick or more when in fact this probably won't even happen over the entire season. He might get a hattrick or 2 but so can Costa, Lukaku, Ibra. A 2 goal haul from Sanchez, Firmino, Coutinho or Mane which is much more likely than an Aguero hattrick matches that big Aguero haul we are so scared of missing out on.

It is not just the big haul it is the consistent big hauls over 4 or 5 gws where if he hits form and you are scrambling with hits to try and cobble the 13m or so together to buy you lose out on 3 or 4 of those weeks where the majority of the game has him captain. This leaves your whole season in tatters unless you have managed to hit a captain each week too but even if this is the case the likelyhood is that the majority of the game will have the captain you have picked as well as Kun.

I am thinking of moving him on myself but I don't think we should be blind to the dangers of doing this.

likelyhood of this being the case come the end of the season?

The lad has 39pts over 6 games and one sub appearance and we all know he could rack that up over 4 or 5 gws if he hit form and pass out all of those 29 players with the same or more points than him.

Yeah I get all that, but who to replace him with? My front 3 is Kun, Costa, Kaku

And I have Sanchez, Walcott, Redmond, Tadic, Capoue

      Who looks better than Kun?

Obviously, I'm not buying Austin with Red and Tad in my squad. And I'd be a fool to buy Wilson or the brothers Watford. I could play 3-5-2 and buy Haz and a LIV mid with the money, but that's a formation change is a big commitment.

Would need an alternative first. Already own Lukaku, Costa is currently one card from a ban, Ibra is out of form. Not sure who else I want, which makes waiting a smarter idea.

Selling an out of form Aguero for a better option is fine. Selling Aguero just for the sake of it less so.

With Aguero you have to consider the cost, it is not a straight up Aguero vs Costa/Kaku/Kane it is the 4th mid being a premium mid difference too.

The only reason we keep Aguero is fear, we are all scared of him finding form and being 10 goals in 7 games or similar.

I am sticking for now but if Kane was fit I might be more inclined to risk it. Until then I just hope he gets going and gives me some green arrows

At his price it'll be hard to justify keeping him in he he remains goaless much longer and drops further in price.
However, I think Aguero and City have just had a few bad games. I don't agree with the "Pep damages strikers" theory which seem to be gaining traction. Lewandowski last season scored 39 goals in 44 Bundesliga and Champions League Games.

      additional note:

In the last 3 seasons, Aguero has scored 67 league goals.

MPG is 95.21 in that time

This season 5 goals at 112.8 mpg, if he gets a brace in the next fixture back to 93.42.

He is maybe not playing as badly as we think, it might just be penalty misses that are influencing us

Those 5 goals came before the last 3 fixtures but those fixtures were Spurs, Everton and Southampton.

He deserves more patience than anyone else in the game imo. Its not about one big haul. One he starts he'll give you 4 double digit hauls out of 5.

And who do i replace him with? Ibra? no form. Mids? I've got 4 big hitters. Costa? I'll wait for one yellow to pass.

Liverpool mids, Theo, Wilson/Austin offer enough value in the game to give Aguero his time.

4 double digit hauls out of 5?

He had 5 double digit hauls in 30 games last season, but only once got more than 1 in a 5 game sequence.
His best 5 game sequences were 5-2-25-6-2, 9-2-16-12-5 and 7-9-17-9-6.
Mahrez however had 10 double digit hauls in 37 games, his best sequence being 15-10-10-1-11-11 (5 double digit hauls in 6)

In 2014-15 Kun had 6 double digit hauls in 33 games, his best sequence being 12-6-6-8-23.

And in 2013-14 he had 7 double digit hauls in 23 games, his best sequence being 13-7-16-8-18-2-15 (4 double digit hauls in 7).
But Suarez had 13 double digit hauls in 33, his best sequences being 13-6-10-17-2-16 (4 double digit hauls in 6), 24-15-22-16 (4 in 4) and 15-11-20-5-9 (3 in 5).

So Kun has had some impressive sequences, but never 4 double digit hauls out of 5.
(And he has only once scored 5 goals in a match since he was a teenager).

This season he has had 2 double digit hauls so far - but De Bruyne, Sanchez, Coutinho, Milner, Chadli and Capoue have already had 3 each (all midfielders!).

midfield vs forward double digit hauls is a fruitless exercise. A mid goal and max baps is a double digit haul, a forward's goal and max baps is 9 points. 1 point difference but it completely ruins the yard stick.

Yes, a 10 point minimum is a rather arbitrary yardstick, and perhaps a 9 point minimum might give a fairer comparison between the forwards and the midfielders, but (apart from 2013-14) the midfielders usually still win.

Kun's had 9 points or more 8 times last season, his best sequence being 9-17-9-6-6 (3 times out of 5).
But Mahrez had 9+ points 14 times, his best sequence being 15-10-10-1-11-11 (5 times out of 6).

In 2014-15, Kun had 9+ points 7 times, with a best sequence of 12-6-6-8-23.
But Hazard had 9+ points 12 times, best sequence 9-13-6-11 (3 out of 4).

In 2013-14, Kun had 9+ points 7 times, best sequence 13-7-16-8-18-2-15 (4 out of 7).
But Suarez had 9+ points 15 times, best sequence 13-6-10-17-2-16-9-2-24-15-22-16 (9 out of 12, including 6 out of 7).
Sturridge had 9+ points 10 times, best sequence 9-9-11-9-6-15-16 (6 out of 7).
Rooney had 9+ points 11 times, best sequence 12-12-4-11-13.
And Yaya had 9+ points 12 times, best sequence 11-6-21-10 (3 out of 4).

This season Kun has had 3 9+ point hauls so far, but so have Costa, De Bruyne, Sanchez, Coutinho, Milner and Chadli, whilst Capoue has had no less than 4.

So there may be many good reasons for buying or keeping Kun, but successive 9 or 10+ point hauls does not appear to be one of them. There is usually at least one rival who gets more of these. His best sequence was back in 2013-14, and even then he was completely overshadowed by the exceptional form of Luis Suarez.

My biggest fear for Kun before I saw him in the Saints game was would he be able physically to do what Pep wants him to do? I think he will suffer massively with hamstring issues etc if he has to do all this pressing Pep wants.

Moving on to my biggest fear now and that is the fact he is playing so deep trying to get involved in the build up play and closing defenders down etc. The amount of attacking play city had in the box where Kun was knowhere to be seen (as he was lounging outside the box) is was scary yesterday. As he was my captain I kept waiting for him to appear in shot while the city player would hold the ball up looking for someone to pass to but he seldom made it. This is not the Kun I know and I can't see how he can score goals if he is not going to be getting in the box to get on the end of the city build up play.

I really want to sell but I can't see who I can sell for, there just don't seem to be any alternatives worth burning a transfer on?

I agree with almost all of that.

Personally I have been going through stages about what to do. This has now reached the point where I think he'll be gone from my team this week. Either for Zlatan or to play the Hull wheel of fortune (starting with Deeney).

I won't go through the whole arguments and I don't wish to influence anyone else. But there are a couple of observations worth adding to what you said.

      1. 58% of the top 10k started him last week and his effective ownership was 75%. Those are numbers that can hurt you if he does well. But not kill you. We have seen top 10k EO well in excess of 150% in the past. And those numbers will fall, slightly at first, faster if he blanks or is benched against WBA.

      2. Aguero will fall in price this week as it looks. That means you could buy him back at the same price you sold for, if not less, should you decide to reverse course later. The only tangible cost is the transfer(s) involved.

In the end, there is Aguero's track record and our psychological reliance on him on one side; and there is Guardiola's track record and whatever appraisal we make about the changed circumstances at City as they affect Aguero on the other. After that it's a judgement call.

You only have 1 FT every week, but you surely will have more than 1 player on a 2-3 gw blank. You can't change every non performer every week right? Why are people over reacting to a few blank here and there in the season of 38 gw? Change the player that is most needed, injured, poor form + bad fix, price drop. Aguero out now is not a urgent case, there are plenty of mid price midfielders, so money isn't a issue, and no clear striker replacement

Can someone suggest some changes for this now horrid team which has somehow got me through the weeks so far.

    Cech (Jaku)
    Valencia, Kos, Evans (Musuaku, Amat)
    Coutinho, Payet, Ozil, Capoue (Puncheon)
    Diomande, Aguero, Lukaku

    2 FT
    0.3m in the bank

I'm thinking a new defender and striker?

    Help please (:

Tottenham have a busy schedule at the moment. EFL cup game vs Liverpool, then PL next weekend and then CL next week.

Is Vertonghen a rotation risk during this or does Poch only rotate his FBs and not his CBs at all?

He only rotates fullbacks. Back-up CBs may play in the league cup but Vertonghen will definitely play in the league when fit.

    Foster, Pickford
    Vertonghen, Williams, Holebas, Evans, Amat
    Sanchez, Sterling, Lallana, Snodgrass, Capoue
    Aguero, Costa, Lukaku

    1FT, 0.0 in bank

    Considering Williams/Evans --> Pieters/Francis.

But should I save FT this week? Might need to assess what to do with Aguero, Sanchez, etc.

Monitor KDB's injury situation before making the move even though Pep said its minor. KDB might be rested this weekend for Barca next week.

I'm waiting for Costa to get his suspension and potentially benefitting from players selling him during that time to get him on the cheaper side. Depends on his price dropping of course but I think it will.

I would go for Alonso because no Spurs or Chelsea defense may hurt you moving forward and you already have Firmino. That being said, I just brought in Coutinho and am deciding on which Chelsea defender to bring in for cover.

Desperately want Chelsea defender as have missed out on clean sheets over past few weeks. Am thinking of going Williams to either Cahill or Luiz. Azpilicueta is solid but I need more goal threat from defense and he is last man back at set pieces. Thoughts on Cahill vs Luiz? I feel Luiz has more goal threat through him taking the odd free kick, but he is a card magnet. Cahill obviously poses a threat on corners and has more interceptions than any Chelsea defender (recognizing different amount of games played). So, who would you go for? Alonso also a prospect but would prefer either Cahill or Luiz to keep up with opponents in mini-league. Cheers.
