Line-up Lessons – Gameweek 12 – Part Two

Joe Allen shifts into the Stoke double-pivot before earning himself a one-match ban. Gylfi Sigurdsson thrives as Swansea’s “false nine”, whilst Chris Brunt retains his place on the flank as West Brom thrash Burnley at the Hawthorns.

After rolling out part one yesterday, here’s the lowdown on the remaining ten teams.

Burnley

Starting XI: Heaton; Lowton, Keane, Mee, Ward; Marney, Defour (Barnes 46); Gudmundsson (Boyd 79), Hendrick, Arfield; Vokes (Gray 70).

  • Burnley manager Sean Dyche made one adjustment for the trip to the Hawthorns, with the fit-again Stephen Ward returning in place of Jon Flanagan.
  • Ward slotted into his usual position of left-back in a 4-2-3-1 set-up. Steven Defour partnered Dean Marney at the base of midfield, with Jeff Hendrick stationed in the No 10 role.
  • With the Clarets trailing 3-0 at half-time, Dyche decided to make a change, with Ashley Barnes coming on for Defour. Barnes joined Sam Vokes in attack, forming a 4-4-2, though the Wales international was himself replaced with 20 minutes remaining by Andre Gray. Dyche’s final substitution saw George Boyd take over from Johann Berg Gudmundsson on the right side of midfield.
  • With Burnley hosting Man City on Saturday, it’s unlikely Dyche will consider starting with two strikers. Barnes and Gray are the options to join Vokes in attack if he were to go on the offensive, while Boyd offers an alternative out wide to either Gudmundsson or Scott Arfield.

Current Status: Fairly Settled
Risk Areas: Central Midfield, Flanks, Strikers

Middlesbrough

Starting XI: Valdes; Barragan, Chambers, Gibson, Fabio (Downing 70); Clayton (Fischer 73); Traore, De Roon, Forshaw (Leadbitter 88), Ramirez; Negredo.

  • Aitor Karanka made two alterations for the visit of Chelsea, with Fabio coming in for the injured George Friend, while Gaston Ramirez returned from suspension to replace Stewart Downing.
  • Fabio slotted in at left-back for ‘Boro, while Ramirez played on the left of what was more of a front three in a 4-3-3 formation, although that switched to a 4-1-4-1 when out of possession.
  • Karanka made an attacking first change, with Downing brought on to replace Fabio at left-back for the final 20 minutes. Shortly after, Viktor Fischer was introduced in place of Adam Clayton, seeing ‘Boro switch to a 4-2-3-1, with Fischer, Adama Traore and Ramirez forming the attacking midfield trio. Grant Leadbitter was handed a brief run-out late on to provide fresh legs in place of Adam Forshaw.
  • With Karanka’s men travelling to face Leicester City on Saturday, it’s likely the Spaniard will keep faith with the same formation. There doesn’t appear to be many players putting their hands up to force their way into the starting XI, with Downing, Fischer, Leadbitter, Cristhian Stuani and Emilio Nsue among the players hoping to earn a start. Friend is expected to remain sidelined, so Fabio, Downing or Nsue are the options available at left-back. Jordan Rhodes is the main alternative to Alvaro Negredo in attack.

Current Status: Fairly Settled
Risk Areas: Left-Back, Flanks

Southampton

Starting XI: Forster: Cedric, Fonte, Van Dijk, Bertrand, Hojbjerg (Reed 79), Romeu, Davis, Redmond, Austin (Rodriguez 75) Boufal (Long 66).

  • Southampton manager Claude Puel made three alterations from the side that lost 2-1 to Hull City for the home encounter against Liverpool, with the fit-again Cedric Soares replacing Maya Yoshida, while Sofiane Boufal came in for the injured Dusan Tadic. The other change saw Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg start in place of Jordy Clasie.
  • Soares slotted into his usual position at right-back, while Hojbjerg joined Oriol Romeu and Steven Davis in the three-man midfield. Boufal (left) and Nathan Redmond (right) flanked central striker Charlie Austin.
  • Boufal was the first player to be replaced by Puel, with the fit-again Shane Long taking his place in a straight swap for the final 24 minutes. Jay Rodriguez then entered the fray in place of Austin in a straight swap, with Puel’s final substitution seeing Harrison Reed provide some fresh legs in midfield in place of Hojbjerg.
  • Hojbjerg got the nod over Clasie last weekend, but the Dutchman could push for a recall when Saints host Everton on Sunday. Boufal may make way should Tadic be available after suffering a broken nose while playing for Serbia. Puel has further options in attack following the return to fitness of Long, so his selection for Thursday night’s Europa League clash against Sparta Prague should provide clues as to who will start in the front three against the Toffees.

Risk Areas: Central Midfield, Flanks, Central Striker

Stoke City

Starting XI: Grant; Bardsley (Johnson 57), Shawcross, Martins Indi, Pieters; Allen, Adam; Shaqiri, Bojan (Walters 73), Arnautovic; Bony (Crouch 68).

  • Mark Hughes made three changes for the home clash against Bournemouth, with the fit-again Xherdan Shaqiri returning in place of Ramadan Sobhi, while Bojan and Marko Arnautovic, who was back after serving a one-match ban, came in for Jon Walters and the injured Glenn Whelan.
  • Shaqiri and Arnautovic started on the right and left respectively of the attacking midfield trio in the 4-2-3-1 formation, with Bojan operating in the No 10 role. That meant Joe Allen dropped into a deeper position at the base of midfield next to Charlie Adam.
  • Hughes was forced into making a change just before the hour mark, with the returning Glen Johnson having to come on for Phil Bardsley, who had picked up a knock. Peter Crouch was then summoned from the bench to replace Wilfried Bony as the lone striker, while Bojan made way for Walters in Hughes’ final substitution, seeing Stoke end the match in a 4-4-2, with Crouch and Walters up front as they looked to find a late equaliser.
  • Johnson could well earn a starting spot at right-back, even if Bardsley is passed fit for the trip to Watford. Hughes will hope to have at least one of Whelan (hamstring) or Geoff Cameron (knee) available for Saturday’s match, given he’ll be without the suspended Allen. Should they both remain out, Giannelli Imbula looks the obvious replacement in central midfield. Jack Butland’s status will need to be monitored towards the end of this week, with the goalkeeper possibly in with a chance of being fit to face the Hornets after recovering from an ankle injury.

Current Status: Fairly Settled
Risk Areas: Right-Back, Central Midfield

Sunderland

Starting XI: Pickford; Jones, Kone, Djilobodji, Van Aanholt; Watmore, Denayer (O’Shea 84), Ndong, McNair (Love 89); Anichebe, Defoe.

  • David Moyes was forced into making one change from the side that beat Bournemouth 2-1 for the home encounter against Hull City, with Jason Denayer coming in for the suspended Steven Pienaar.
  • Denayer started alongside Didier Ndong and Paddy McNair in a three-man midfield, with Victor Anichebe and Duncan Watmore flanking central striker Jermain Defoe in the 4-3-3 formation.
  • Moyes only made two changes late on with his side leading 3-0. John O’Shea was brought on in place of Denayer, while following the sending off of Papy Djilobodji, Donald Love was introduced in place of McNair, who was forced off with a slight knock.
  • Moyes will be without the suspended Djilobodji for the trip to Anfield on Saturday, so O’Shea may deputise at centre-back. Denayer provides another option in that position, although with McNair also a doubt, and given the lack of other options for Moyes in midfield, it’s likely the Belgian will be needed to play in the engine room. Pienaar will be available after serving his one-match ban, though, and would offer a viable alternative to both players.

Current Status: Fairly Settled
Risk Areas: Central Defence, Central Midfield

Swansea City

Starting XI: Fabianski; Naughton, Amat, Fernandez, Taylor; Cork, Fer, Fulton (Sung-Yeung 87); Barrow (Dyer 81), Sigurdsson, Routledge.

  • Bob Bradley made eight changes from the side that lost 3-1 to Man United for the trip to Goodison Park, with Kyle Naughton, Jordi Amat, Federico Fernandez, Neil Taylor, Jack Cork, Leroy Fer, Jay Fulton and Modou Barrow coming in for Angel Rangel, Mike van der Hoorn, Alfie Mawson, Stephen Kingsley, Leon Britton, Ki Sung-yeung, Fernando Llorente and Borja Baston.
  • Those changes saw the Swans switch from a 4-4-2 to a 4-3-3, with Barrow and Wayne Routledge flanking “false nine” Gylfi Sigurdsson in attack. Cork, Fulton and Fer combined in midfield, while Naughton, Amat, Fernandez and Taylor formed the back four.
  • Bradley introduced the fit-again Nathan Dyer late on, with the winger providing fresh legs in place of Barrow in a straight swap. Ki was then brought on for the final three minutes, with Fulton making way in central midfield.
  • While the Welsh outfit put in an improved performance on Merseyside, the constant chopping and changing under Bradley means he could yet make further alterations for the home clash against Crystal Palace. If the American opts for a more attacking approach, he could switch to a 4-2-3-1, and hand a recall to either Borja or Llorente in attack, with Sigurdsson dropping back into the No 10 role. Jefferson Montero could be an option on the left wing should he be able to play with a cast on his broken hand, while Britton and Ki are viable alternatives in central midfield. The more attack-minded Kingsley may also be an option instead of Taylor at left-back.

Current Status: Unsettled
Risk Areas: Left-Back, Central Midfield, Flanks, Strikers

Tottenham Hotspur

Starting XI: Lloris; Walker (Trippier 89), Dier, Vertonghen, Rose; Dembele (Son Heung-min 73), Wanyama, Winks; Eriksen; Kane, Janssen (Alli 69).

  • Mauricio Pochettino made two changes for the London derby against West Ham United, with Harry Winks and Vincent Janssen coming in for Kevin Wimmer and Son Heung-min.
  • Those changes saw Spurs switch from the 3-4-1-2 formation used against Arsenal to a 4-1-2-1-2 system. Victor Wanyama played at the base of a midfield diamond, with Winks and Mousa Dembele slightly further forward on the sides. Christian Eriksen was stationed at the tip of the diamond behind the front two of Harry Kane and Janssen.
  • But after falling 2-1 behind, Pochettino brought on Dele Alli, with Janssen making way. Shortly after, Son was introduced in place of Dembele, seeing Eriksen drop into a slightly deeper midfield role, with Alli at the tip of the diamond behind Kane and Son. Kieran Trippier was handed a few minutes late on in place of Kyle Walker.
  • Toby Alderweireld look likely to miss Saturday’s trip to Stamford Bridge due to a leg injury, while Danny Rose will be unavailable due to suspension. So either Trippier or Wimmer appear likely to come into the side if Ben Davies (ankle) remains sidelined, with Jan Vertonghen an option to play at left-back should Wimmer be chosen at centre-half. Both Alli and Son look set to earn recalls, with Janssen and Winks the most likely to make way. Moussa Sissoko and Erik Lamela, providing he recovers from a hip injury, could provide further options in midfield, with Pochettino having a few different formations to choose from, including the 4-1-2-1-2, 4-1-4-1 and 4-2-3-1.

Current Status: Slightly Unsettled
Risk Areas: Left-Back, Centre-Half, Central Midfield, Flanks, Strikers

Watford

Starting XI: Gomes ; Britos, Kaboul, Prodl; Janmaat (Guedioura 87), Behrami, Pereyra, Zuniga, Amrabat, Capoue, Deeney (Okaka 90).

  • Watford head coach Walter Mazzarri made two alterations for the home clash against Leicester City, with Juan Zuniga coming in for the suspended Jose Holebas, while Sebastian Prodl replaced Odion Ighalo.
  • Those changes saw Watford line up in more of a 3-4-3 formation, with Zuniga playing at left wing-back. Prodl joined Younes Kaboul and Miguel Britos in the three-man defence, while Nordin Amrabat (right) and Roberto Pereyra (left) flanked central striker Troy Deeney.
  • Mazzarri only made two changes late on, with Adlene Guedioura coming on for Daryl Janmaat, while the fit-again Stefano Okaka got a few minutes late on in place of Deeney.
  • Holebas will be available to face Stoke City on Sunday after serving his one-match ban and is favourite to regain his starting spot in place of Zuniga. If Mazzarri sticks with the 3-4-3, the rest of the starting XI may stay unchanged. But Ighalo could come back into contention if the Italian looks to switch back to a 3-5-2.

Current Status: Fairly Settled
Risk Areas: Flanks, Strikers

West Bromwich Albion

Starting XI: Foster; Dawson, McAuley, Evans, Nyom; Yacob; Phillips (McClean 75), Morrison (Gardner 83), Fletcher, Brunt; Rondon (Robson-Kanu 79).

  • Tony Pulis named an unchanged side from the one that beat Leicester City 2-1 for the home encounter against Burnley.
  • Chris Brunt (right), James Morrison (No 10) and Matt Phillips (left) once again formed the attacking midfield trio in the 4-2-3-1 behind lone striker Salomon Rondon.
  • Pulis handed run-outs to James McClean, Hal Robson-Kanu and Craig Gardner during the final 15 minutes with his side cruising to a comfortable 4-0 victory, with Phillips, Rondon and Morrison making way in straight swaps.
  • Following such an impressive performance, Pulis may well consider naming an unchanged starting XI once again for the trip to Hull. Nacer Chadli would be the only obvious change to make should he be passed fit following knee surgery, but with the short turnaround, and given the performances of Brunt, Morrison and Phillips, he may not need to be risked against the Tigers.

Risk Areas: Attacking Midfield, Flanks

West Ham United

Starting XI: Randolph; Kouyate, Reid, Ogbonna; Antonio, Lanzini, Obiang, Cresswell; Ayew (Fernandes 61), Payet (Nordtveit 85); Sakho (Zaza 61).

  • Hammers boss Slaven Bilic made three alterations for the trip to White Hart Lane, with Diafra Sakho coming in for the suspended Mark Noble, while Winston Reid returned from a one-match ban to replace James Collins. The other change saw Darren Randolph replace Adrian in goal.
  • Sako played as the central striker in the 3-4-2-1, with Andre Ayew and Dimitri Payet starting in the attacking midfield positions. Manuel Lanzini dropped back into central midfield to partner Pedro Obiang, while Reid joined Angelo Ogbonna and Cheikhou Kouyate in the three-man backline.
  • Sakho and Ayew failed to make much of an impact, though, and were replaced by Simone Zaza and Edimilson Fernandes just after the hour mark. Fernandes played in central midfield alongside Obiang, with Lanzini then pushed into a more advanced midfield role behind lone striker Zaza. In a bid to hold onto their 2-1 lead, Bilic introduced Havard Nordtveit in place of Payet, forming more of a 3-6-1 formation during the latter stages until Reid’s late dismissal.
  • Bilic will be without the suspended Reid for Sunday’s trip to Old Trafford, then, although Noble will be available following his one-match ban. Collins looks set to earn a recall in central defence, with Nordtveit offering another option. With Noble returning in midfield, Lanzini may push further forward in place of either Ayew or Sakho, with Zaza also an option as the lone striker if Bilic looks to change things up in attack. Michail Antonio could also potentially move into a more advanced role. Adrian was dropped on Saturday, and may miss out to Randolph once more.

Better pick ? (This GW play 4-4-2)

    Sanchez - Firmino - Pedro - Sterling - Allen*
    Kun - Lukaku

    a/ Sterling > Siggy
    b/ Sterling + Lukaku > Coutinho + Austin (-4)

    Thanks.

      You are a visionary.

Suddenly he's a very good differential. Especially if Lukaku and Aguero continue to struggle.

If you do it before Aguero plays Burnley, yes.

It may also make you a nutter too. But a lot of visionaries are to be fair.

I really want to be in on Zlat. Considering downgrading Sanchez to Mane to fit him in.

Really?? Apart from the start of the season he seems like he's been a dud.

I agree with some posters below about Aguero though. It's getting more and more tempting to transfer him out.

Giving him a couple more games, if he still hasn't scored he's out for the Christmas period where he's bound to be rested loads.

Less, but still not as little as 2014/15.

Contrasting seasons though performance wise. 1.5m rank this time. Top 5K finish then.

Agreed, the variety of players to pick from makes it more interesting.

Think the chips are now a formula, which is rather boring. e.g. no one uses bench boost or triple captain until DGWs - would like to see rules changed next year with those or its too formulaic.

No matter what people say rank plays a bit part in their enjoyment of the game.

It's always easier to enjoy the game more when you're doing well. I've enjoyed the last couple of weeks more than the rest of the season that's for sure.

          Still an awful rank though!

It does and it doesn't. I hated 2014/15 when I reached the top 5K by GWK 8 and never left. Nothing I did made me go up or down more than 2K each week. By GWK 38 I was thankful it was over and ceased to care what my rank was.

All the seasons before I enjoyed due to the ups and downs.

This season my rank is so bad that it's not enjoyable either but for the same reason as 14/15 - nothing I do can shift my general rank. Patience ends with a poor score, hits end in a poor score, template ends in a poor score, going different ends in a poor score.

Stagnation is the cause of lack of enjoyment for me - whether that's up among the elite or down among the basement dwellers.

I moved up from around 650,000 to top 100,000 without spending a WC or taking any hits in the space of two GWs, so patience can pay off IMO.

Not a great rank, but it gives me a shot at gaining more ground, as I still have my WC in the back pocket. Even if I didn't have it, occasionally shifts in fixtures/form, mean you can make big gains if you are ahead of the curve.

Agree on stagnation, that is the root of boredom. But I think in a few weeks your new approach to the game will pay off. Last few weeks have been pretty dull with big hitters and interesting differentials mainly failing.

Another aspect is minileagues, if you're locked in a battle with friends then Overall Rank ceases to matter as much and the minileague contest becomes the main factor.

Jonty - your view on the chips is one I fully endorse. They are far too formulaic and allow for no tactics at all. Everyone just waits for double gameweeks. I think a pre-Jan 1 round of them would add a much more engaging element.

Indeed. At this stage over a quarter of FPL teams are dead. Would they be if those teams had a BB or TC chip to play with and the security of knowing that in next year's doubles they can use them as well.

The link between chips and doubles predictably meant we all here collectively leaped above our rivals - nice at the time - but year on year of that will get very boring.

Yep, I'd expect quite a few of the top 100 to have played their TC.

Statistically speaking that is bad decision long term, but that's a flaw of the game.

Who know though, last season's double gameweeks were a bit of a damp squib.

                  Couldn't agree more.

Think FPL has to understand that a lot of the players enjoy the tactical side of the game the most - the feeling of being ahead of the curve, or a clever punt coming off. The chips should be part of that, not something you just chuck in when Aguero has two games in a gameweek.

The thing is tough, will it be as predictable as last year with the chips?

With so many options this year we will see a variety of different BB teams.

And would you really TC Aguero without considering other options? I TC Sanchez last season when Aguero was the most essential player in the game. Now he isn't at that status there could be some interesting TC differentials being picked.

Things tend to even out in the second half of the season. Big teams tighten up at the back. Heavy hitters continue performing.

Last season Aguero and Sanchez delivered.

The next DGWK Payet ended up doing ok.

It's less the player though its the timing....everyone who follows the game will play their wildcard with each dgwk in mind and then in the two big DGWKs will all use their chips.

I think your own strategy was the main impact on enjoyment levels being low that season Jonty.. reaching the top 5k so early would have felt like mission accomplished to an extent and you were just concerned with staying there.. textbook transfers and captaincy picks each and every week from then on as well as a template squad would have ensured that no major movement in terms of rank was ever going to happen to be fair.. stagnation causing lack of enjoyment and your strategy contributing heavily to the stagnation i feel

Less - frustrating season . Just can't seem to find the smart moves as in previous seasons. All the form players I get in seems to immeditately go off the boil or get injured /banned.

I guess that's the rough with the smooth. Curse of too many options.

I'd say it's better than the Suarez / Sturridge season where you have set players and everyone had the same 9/10 players every week.

If I can give any advice, I'd say a good antidote to the frustration is not to chase last week's points and go with your gut as much as possible. Only look a few fixtures ahead to as players seem more dispensable than every this year.

I am enjoying it less, because I am doing worse, pretty simply. I could do with at least one player being sort of reliable.

The amount of false dawns, both from big hitters (aguero, lukaku) and mid price standouts (allen, gundo, capoue) is making it very difficult to tell where to spend transfers this year.

My second ever FPL season- enjoying it much more than last as i am doing pretty well.. but still frustrating. Been inside the top 100k since GW4 but not really gone anywhere due to inconsistency. Being less stubborn this year has helped me.. and getting on bandwagons early too. Much more choices than last year makes it far more enjoyable.

Less. Overall rating down, but also because this season still seems foggy. The lack of consistency means 2 gameweeks don't go by without major transfers. No minor tinkering yet.

There's just three of us in my mini league but we're all doing pretty well (for us) and in the top 200k. There's only 10 pts between us so the banter is good.

OR does matter to me but I'm far too much of a reactive player to do well, patience is not my forte at all. Already took -24 in hits this year, although that's an improvement as I normally do in excess of 100.

I do love this game it makes Football much more interesting.

I'm enjoying it more this season as it is more difficult.
Got ahead of the template last year (v.early on Mahrez, VArdy,Alli etc.) and when it became the template it became a bit boring particulaly as there weren't so many options last year.

I'm finding it frustrating but it is much more interesting.

I don't feel I'm way out there with

      Foster Jak
      Holebas Fuchs Lovren Amat McCauley
      Firmino Coutinho Hazard Sanchez Fletcher
      Wilson Aguero Austin

but I'm behind someone in a private league that currently holds none of these players bar Foster who he always benches and I always play. There are an amazing number of options this time around.

Less. Defences hopeless, may as well have picked and stuck with the cheapest starting defenders.

Can' fit in all of the premium attackers I'd like and form and fixtures are no guide to who is going to perform.

Smart picks such as Snodgrass and Chadli get injured just as they look primed for points.

After my highest ever finish last season I'm now about 1.6m, I would have given up by now but I'm interested to see when it will bottom out (just had my worse gw and overall rank last week), and to see if it continues in this vein if I carry on playing properly.

The same. What i'm most frustrated with is people complaining about the format of the game.

Sometimes we need to just play and not think about how to change it. Yes sometimes it's frustrating, yes sometimes there are templates, but the game changes itself with form and fixtures and injuries. The rules don't need to constantly change.

Let's just play, enjoy it for what it is, and play the game we want to play!

Stands to reason that I'm enjoying it less due to being around 300k overall. I think the lack of quality striker options is causing a blockage meaning it's hard to make real gains at present with striker differentials. Arsenal/Liverpool playing midfielders up front whilst the likes of Ighalo, Vardy, Negredo, Gray, Wilson, Bony, Carroll, Hernandez and Llorente just haven't been firing whereas in previous seasons you'd expect a few of them to do so - meaning more choice, more changes, and easier to make in-roads. A template strikeforce of Costa/Aguero/Lukaku/Austin is making it difficult to cut through. Defoe and Kane now starting to unsettle that, which is great.

Even though I have never done even remotely as bad as I am doing this season, I think this season has something special over it.

With no clear template, with teams' changing forms, money becoming an issue, different tactics available, I think this season is very interesting. If you try to do something completely different or if you folllow the logical, "normal" thing to do, some weeks you are going to be rewarded, other weeks you get knocked down.

Worst rank ever for me, so of course it takes something away from the game, but I still think that this season is very dynamic - objectively speaking at least.

Big challenge to see how much the 1m++ rankers can improve.

Best season in many a year for me, a wealth of options all over the park and no massively established template.

The myriad of midfield options have also made 3-5-2 a genuine option rather than mostly a plan B which is it most seasons. I do get bored of a heavily front loaded 3-4-3 every week.

My current best rank in quite a few seasons hasn't hurt matters much I guess either 🙂

Lost at the end of last article!

So, already did Lukaku & Boruc ---> Kane & Pickford for a -4.

As Allen is banned, I now only have 3 playing mids for this weekend..

Is it worth transferring out Allen for Pickford based on his recent performances and fixtures over the next 4 games?

My team for the weekend is:

    Foster
    Amat, Holebas, Mcauley, Morgan
    Firmino, Coutinho, Hazard
    Kane Aguero Costa

Is this good to go, or take a -4 anywhere?

    Foster (Pickford)
Mustafi - Lovren - Williams (Evans, Amat)
Sanchez - Mane (c) - Sigurdson - Pedro (de Roon)
    Aguero - Lukaku - Austin

Williams needs to go I think, but dont think its -4 worthy.

8 points hit seems to have paid off:

Mustafi, Sterling, Ibra out for Brunt, Hazard and Kane.

Set up for the long term now (hopefully) - happy days.

Also a full house in defence for clean sheets - Pickford, Alonso, Brunt and Lovren.

      ROUGH.

brought in Giroud and Milner for Ibra and Snodgrass.
Both blanked, while Ibra got a brace and Snodgrass got a goal and assist.

      Last week,
I drunkenly rage transferred out Giroud and Milner for Austin and Coutinho.
Both blanked, while Giroud got a goal and baps.

      On my bench,
      I had Pickford(7), Lallana(0), Capoue(10) and Kone(6) for a combined 23 points.

      My starting 11 returned 25(-4).

      Dropped from rank 295k -> 566k.
I was 10k at one point earlier this season.

Evans and Foster plus Fletcher second sub coming on for Gundogan as my first sub Stones also didn't show. About time I had some fortune as these were my only points in a sea of two's and there's! So glad I benched Heaton 🙂

      Rough;

Not especially smooth, but had Capoue as my third sub, which was far from ideal when he scored in the opening minute.

Luckily, Stones, Gundogan and Lallana didn't play, so he came on.

I've had Capoue sub for all double-point scores this season, this is the first time that he has been brought on. I'm counting that as a success.

Defo smooth. Used AOA coz only 2 fit defenders and an out of favour Amat. Technically it failed coz gundo didn't travel BUT it actually worked spectacularly coz did Diomande to Anichebe(-4) to play it. Also got KDB c in for Payet 😎

      Horrible week
      Only managed 31 points
1 transfer was sterling to haz didn't pay big this week.
      Cap. Kun. Bomb!
Only points of note from West Brom last night.

Gutted that I went for Heaton over Pickford, had it on Pickford all week...otherwise I'm fairly happy even though none of my attacking players got points.

3 clean sheets from Alonso, Lovren and Evans saved me.

      Red arrow though.

      12 point hit.

Out went Court, Antonio, Wilson, Deeney

In came Siggy, Allen (benched), Kane, Anichibe

Also captained Kane and would have captained hazard before transfers

My question is, why the hell did I knee-jerk buy Walcott back? is it a mistake what with his preggers wife and all lol.. I just didn't fancy Siggy at this time, though his stats are fantastic. Those Arsenal fixtures are they to good to ignore?

And if you have Costa and Hazard already, who's the best bet for the 3rd Chelsea player during their great run of fixtures. Alonso or Pedro? who's looking mighty dangerous.

One of the luckiest smooths for me, as transfers on the first and last days paid off.

Got in Alonso for Kelly immediately, my first move of the season I made while a GW was still going.

Then I waited out the whole break until the Coutinho rumors forced me to upgrade my nonexistent bench for a hit. Brought in Anichebe for Keane, who is out for the season, on Friday night, missed the news Coutinho was on the plane, started Anichebe over Coutinho.

      60 (-4), big green.

Smooth: Lallana injury = Fletcher off the bench. Didn't take the -4 so all points were mine.
Rough: Reading the live feed of Kaku / Bolasie set up by Kaku messing up chances with Kun also blanking. Was a big chance to overtake my near competitor ahead of the near-inevitable WBA clean sheet. Very frustrating.

        Rough -

Did Fletcher (who would've played due to Lallana injury) to Snodgrass late on Friday night resulting in a 10 point swing of points lost
Gundogan not showing up - means Kelly 1 pointers
Many other players blanking (Coutinho, Aguero captain, Lukaku, Walker)

        Meh -

Sanchez to Hazard 3 point gain

        Smooth -

Total 28 points. Only player that didn't blank was McCauley. Got hazard in... Nothing. 25 points on the bench , including those from Capoue who I have had in my squad from GW1 but have yet to collect a single point from him.
Not so long ago I was hovering above 2000 0R . Nothing but red arrows at the moment currently around 50,000 mark.( I know this could be worse)

no bench luck in my team 11 starters all played for a solid 46. Nice bit of smooth in there was bringing Rondon in this week for Andre Gray(failed coin toss with Vokes the week before, Vokes scores big and Gray didn't play), however Rondon getting cut out the bonus was rough for an outstanding performance

Got the Capoue haul off my bench courtesy Gundogan, but the real smooth was in my Community Scout Picks.
Phillips bringing home the majority of the points, Kane reminding doubters of his class, Coleman getting a last-ditch equaliser, and then, post-match, Chris Brunt sneaking 1 bonus point in spite of no attacking returns to take me to the same margin of victory as VS_10. 😎 💰

      ROUGH!!!

26 (-4) = 22 points...and a GW rank of 3.74m, my worst GW in seven seasons playing FPL.
Dropped 350k places to 750k. Not even in my casual years I was that bad at this stage of the season.

I managed only 3 gameweeks with a sub 1m gw rank all season so far...

      Heaton 0
      Walker 0, Koscielny 2, Evans 6
      Hazard 4, Firmino 3, Coutinho 2, Allen 1
      Aguero 2x2, Lukaku 2, Austin 2

      Pickford 7 | Capoue 10, Amat 2, Holebas 0

Capoue is on my bench since GW1. I didn't get any points from him...

In the years I had success I played very dull. Blocking high ownership tactics and low risk moves. This isn't working at all this season. I think I play a very similar style to Jonty and it's interessting that he's also struggling this season.

Aguero is becoming a fear pick.
People have to look at their own sides and decide what best suits their own side and what sacrifices they are making to keep him in the side.
e.g. Is Aguero + Allen really better than Costa + Coutinho/Firmino?

Considering Y Toure isn't in Man City's champions league squad + Pep's comments about him being good in training and at the right weight, is it possible that he may become a more nailed on option in their midfield?

With price factored in too, could he be a good choice, especially for those without Kun and unable to afford KDB?

Obviously he's only played one game so far, but if he starts the next couple matches, could be good value there.in

Aguero has 9 goals in 10 starts.
He has 3 goals in his last 3 starts.
      What more do you want?
      Nobody scores in every match.
Not Messi, not Ronaldo, not Aguero, not even Capoue.
      Nobody.

FPL managers who has done poorly and need reasons to go off-pist in their approach to catch up, always seems to see ghosts like this. But there is no rational logic to support it, imo.

How severe do we expect the rotation to be GW15 - 17? With what is in effect three GW’s in one week. (That’s roughly right) Which players should we be wary of and who is a definite no go area. Should we be planning now with only a few transfers to go before that period.

      Is Costa essential now?

Is it time to get rid of Sanchez?

Is it best to avoid City assets for the upcoming congestion of games and cheaper alternatives outscoring them?

        1) Same, is Costa essential ?

        2) Sanchez before 3 great games is begging to be held though.

        3) city not providing value for money ATM , can't justify KDB as Aguero ' cover ' either , unless city s goal scoring form improves dramatically .

Have the same 3 questions Jonty, hope you feature these .

      2) Stick or twist with Lukaku?

      3) Who is the better pick - Hazard or Costa?

      4) Without Lallana, is two Liverpool midfielders a good idea?

      5) Is it too risky for non-Alonso owners to wait until GW15?

      6) Do players with a seven figure game rank need a radical new approach?

      7) What player upgrades can you do by going Aguero-less ?

Did this gameweek show the importance of having 15 playing squad members? Multiple people in my mini league had to play 9-10 players because of rests, injuries etc, prioritising multiple big hitters and then having cheap understdies that will never play.

Likes of Stones, Gundogan, Lallana, Bellerin, Friend, Adam Smith, Holebas, Chadli are all in multiple teams and didn't feature this weekend.

Then the replacements are Stuani, Holgate, Kingsley etc.

Is two premium (6m+) defenders too much as a general strategy? On Koscielny and Alonso for good team and fixtures(rotate best of the 4.5ers) but costs me elsewhere. 6 CS from this gameweek though.

Could keeping Lukaku and Aguero for one more week be better than bringing in Kane/Costa this week?
However Costa could very well score ESP at Stamford bridge with Spurs a bit leaky of late .

Burnley conceded 4 Vs WBA away, will their home form remain the same even after a battering Vs someone highly unexpected such as WBA ? If so could this be the perfect last chance for those looking to sell Aguero?

Lukaku and Sanchez have to be spoken about in all this Aguero talk atleast for a couple of minutes in the scoutcast .

Could Lukaku score Vs Soton since he is due a goal every three games or so ? Soton are strong at the back but not to say Lukaku can't score if it's his day , last chance or ditch ?

Sanchez has 3 great games coming up, with Walcott not really bouncing back , as a Sanchez holder would you hold or keep to fund in say Alonso and Kane/Costa if you already have hazard ?

1.Are any city players nailed any more?

      2. Is Arsenal cover essential. Sanchez seems too pricey and other mid range mids tempting particularly double

With the defence of teams looking likely to settle in the coming weeks with Arsenal , Spurs, Chelsea , United and Southampton about to embark on a highly decent set of fixtures if not great....could Aguero s 2.3-2.5 million difference over Costa/Kane be spent at the back to get 5 playing defenders over Christmas ?

It seems plausible that a combo of Costa-Alonso-Walker/Valencia/Cedric/VVD should outscore Aguero-Smith-Holebas as the 4.5 defenders look quite average for the coming weeks unless someone pops up .

Whoops replied in the wrong place above... Sorry

What with many of us ridding ourselves of the expensive Sanchez for Hazard, is Walcott off limits what with his preggers wife and all.. Do you consider Ozil a tad expensive on a price per points output, and what of Giroud is it only a matter of time before he's a regular starter and on everyone's radar?. Those Arsenal fixtures are they just to good to ignore? for those who don't have Arsenal coverage.

And if you have Costa and Hazard already, who's the best bet for the 3rd Chelsea player during their great run of fixtures. Alonso or Pedro?.

      2. I really really want Sanchez. How to fit him in? For Aguero,Hazard, Mané or Kaku?

      3. Which Southampton defender to get? Cedric worth the pick?

      4. With Liverpools fixtures so tasty, is it worth keeping Clyne or should I get in Cedric?

How are we going to get a full squad of 15 in our teams without downgrading some of our main 5 players as talked about last week. Looking at the budget options there isn't many options there at all under 4.6.
We all know at Xmas it is vital to have 15 players that play or evna have a chance of playing. What is everyones tactic on that issue?

If you want more balance you'll have to downgrade one of the 5. I don't know who your main 5 are but I'd identify which of them is the worst option and go for 2 players with average prices.

Yeah it's going to be tough. My bench is Amat who is not a guarantee at the moment but could well be. Love from Sunderland who played 3 mins the other day. Jaku who doesn't play at all. and Gundogan who isn't a guarantee wither with rotation.

My 5 are Hazard, Aguero,Lukaku,Coutinho, Payet.

I want Payet and Lukaku gone this week to be replaced by god knows who..

Payet's next 3 are ugly and Lukaku's aren't much better. I'd concentrate on having 3 nailed on defenders first and then consider taking a 4 point hit to get rid of Payet/Lukaku.

      Coverage - is it important?
      Currently have 3 Chelsea, 3 Liverpool & 2 Arsenal.
But does seem strange to have 0 Man City, Spurs or even Man Utd.
Happy with Chelsea & Liverpool as hopefully no Europe means less rotation & less injuries.

No. Pick the players who you think will score the most points. However, your scores will be subject to a lot more variance if you load up on a few teams, i.e. you'll do better if Chelsea score 5 but a lot worse if City do the same.

Inebriated transfers. Perhaps not particularly relevant this week but always an interesting subject!

On Saturday evening I was very annoyed I hadn't taken the risk on getting Kane in for Costa (though of course in hindsight I've gained some succour). After a few beers at a friends' house, I apparently "decided" to take a hit to do Costa --> Kane / Lallana --> Coutinho on Saturday night, as I found out to my chagrin on Sunday morning.

So I was just wondering what, if any, drunken FPL moves you guys have made, and how they've worked out?

I rarely ever do such early transfers, so who knows if mine will pay off. Looks ok objectively, but definitely not the week to get rid of Costa!

      1) Juan Mata.Is he a decent Utd option or is it Ibra or noone? He played 70+ minutes in the last 3 matches.
      2) When are we going to accept that City are not the best team in the league and that the bubble of invincibility has burst? Liverpool and Chelsea look much better attacking sides at the moment and have no European involvement. I'd put Arsenal and Spurs as teams that can match them offensively as well. Especially with the upcoming fixtures.

      Whoops reply fail, re-posting here:

Considering Y Toure isn't in Man City's champions league squad + Pep's comments about him being good in training and at the right weight, is it possible that he may become a more nailed on option in their midfield?

With price factored in too, could he be a good choice, especially for those without Kun and unable to afford KDB?

Obviously he's only played one game so far, but if he starts the next couple matches, could be good value there.

      Thinking of the same
May just wait one week even though Aguero and Lukaku are falling in price and Kane and Costa are rising
      A potential 0.4-0.6 value loss there .
I might just go for it , if Spurs and Chelsea both score in a high scoring draw or a 2-1 game , Costa and Kane may very well get the goals even if they play each other .
Depends on how much that 0.5 matters to you and whether you think Chelsea-Spurs will be a 0-0 or a scoring game.

On paper you would wait but heck this season is about doing unorthodox things which seem to pay off . I maybe might do it but with a lot of background fear .

50/50 , wouldn't wanna be a chadli owner right now , probably harder to decide than Aguero haha,
With philips in good form, it's hard to drop him but chadli is a key player who takes their pens too.
Brunt might get dropped to defence if Phillips moves to the right to get chadli back in but brunt got bonus points yday without any assists or goals , which means he had a good game overall none the less.

I think Pulis might just be tempted to give Philips and brunt another outing and nyom too who gave an assist .
Seems like the kind of manager who might reward his players with loyalty to them if they take their chances . Again, I could be wrong but just sharing a point of view .

Honestly if you have no other transfers to do, I might sell for Siggy just before Siggy faces palace this week . Or take out Arnie for Siggy and monitor chadli another week.

Arnie simply isn't working mate. The points are going to be evenly split to bony, Shaqiri , bojan etc ...def don't see the Arnie of last season taking the goal burden of 10-15 a season

Just check which position chadli has played for WBA , left or central .

Anyone considering Phillips as a Hazard/Costa/Kane/Sanchez etc. enabler?

    5.1 looks a steal.

is Brunt playing out of position?

Nyom looks to have nailed down left back and also a steal at 4.3!

I think Morison more at risk of chadli return,
Brunt effectively playing as inverted winger and on set plays making him a good option imo

Mane or Coutinho to bring in alongside Firmino?

Money makes no difference really. Phil seems to make more sense, but Mane is more interesting and a bigger differential...

I have both, captaining Mane but Cout is definitely safer and better value.

Is anyone considering Ibra after his suspension? 3 weeks off, should be raring to go right (although I suppose he'll play in the europa league game)?

Also what has happened to spurs defence...

As long as no injury he's in for Lukaku and captained. Wet Sham are dodgy enough to give it a go.

    Jakupick
    Morgan, Clyne, Holebas, Evans, Amat
    Sanchez, Firmino, Coutinho, Allen*, Fletcher
    Lukaku, Aguero, Costa

    A) Morgan, Allen -> Pieters, Moses
    B) Lukaku, Allen -> Austin, Walcott/Pedro
    C) Allen, Fletcher -> Zaha, De Roon.

Impressed by Rondon again last night. Considering Lukaku and Allen > Rondon and Zaha.

Get Lukaku back when he's stopped falling and Rondon isn't playing Hull and such other rubbish.

Morrisson and Brunt have really improved that team.

I've always liked Rondon. He's been wasted in that team at times. Nice if things pick up for the Baggies fans.

I'm doing Capoue to Carrick for two reasons.

    0.6m will come in handy.
Sick of accumulating points on the bench.

Anything good out in the Cinema (coming out)? Went and seen Arrival last week; brilliant film.
Love a good film which makes you think (big Christopher Nolan fan) rather than this generic Marvel stuff (sequels/remakes) that just seems regurgitated to bring in the $$$$.
