Harry Kane (11.2) may have mustered just a single shot away to Manchester United on Sunday but he’s still set to challenge at the top of our latest Captain Poll.

Chances should certainly be far more plentiful for the Spurs striker when Hull City drop by White Hart Lane on Wednesday.

Mike Phelan’s Tigers have conceded 17 goals on the road this campaign, while Kane has scored a brace in his last two home outings.

Teammates Christian Eriksen (8.3) and Dele Alli (8.1) also failed to impress at Old Trafford, but against such a travel-sick side, are surely worthy of armband consideration.

Eriksen, in particular, appeared in fine fettle prior to Sunday’s Old Trafford disappointment, having scored three goals and assisted another in in the two matches prior to the Red Devils defeat.

Arsenal’s Alexis Sanchez (11.7) was another disappointment over the weekend, fetching just an assist and 5 points from Arsenal’s 3-1 victory at home to Stoke City.

However, away from home, the 34.8% owned Chilean is a different beast: he’s scored more goals and accrued more shots on target and created more chances for teammates than any other FPL midfielder.

The Chilean looks destined to rival Kane at the summit, particularly with the Gunners facing an Everton defence that has failed to keep a clean sheet over their last five outings, with just a single shutout in their last eleven Gameweeks.

With the hosts in such poor form Mesut Ozil (9.6) and Theo Walcott (7.9) may also gather interest. Both impressed in the Stoke City victory with a goal apiece. Indeed, Walcott registered more shots than any other player over Gameweek 15 although, with Arsene Wenger hinting at rotation, he may yet find himself kept in reserve at Goodison Park.

Given that they host Watford,  Manchester City may also provide a host of strong contenders this Gameweek, despite their 4-2 humbling away to Leicester City on Saturday evening.

However, interest in Kevin De Bruyne (10.8) is set to be muted with the Belgian now without a goal since Gameweek 5. He’s also failed to return an assist in his last three outings following Saturday’s defeat.

Pep Guardiola’s option of fielding Nolito as a false 9 may also force us to overlook the 8% owned Kelechi Iheanacho (6.8), who was hooked after just 57 minutes at the King Power Stadium.

His replacement on Saturday, Yaya Toure (£7.5m), could now present a short-term differential. The Ivorian would seem poised to start and get a run at a Watford defence that is without a clean sheet in their last five Gameweeks, conceding 13 goals.

Question marks remain over the reliability of Chelsea’s Eden Hazard (10.5) away from Stamford Bridge, which may just temper interest in the 38.4% owned Chelsea midfielder ahead of his trip to Sunderland. On the road, he has scored just twice, compared to six goals at home.

In marked contrast, Diego Costa (10.9) has emerged as one of this season’s most reliable performers both home and away.

It would be no surprise to see FPL’s most popular player among the poll’s frontrunners after delivering attacking returns in 13 of his 15 Gameweek starts. Sunderland, meanwhile, have conceded 14 goals at the Stadium of Light, with just one clean sheet from seven matches.

West Ham offer a trio of differential armband options this week due to a home fixture with a Burnley outfit that has shipped 15 goals across their six away trips.

That could garner votes for the 9.4% owned Dimitri Payet (9.1), who has delivered attacking returns in each of his last three Gameweek outings.

Michail Antonio (6.7), is another that may attract attention, as could striker Andy Carroll (6.1).

After impressing off the bench in his last two outings, the 1.6% owned Geordie looks to have done enough to have earn his second start of the season against the Clarets.

No side has scored more than Liverpool’s 37 goals this season, but a visit to a Middlesbrough side, which has conceded just seven goals in as many home fixtures, may force a rethink for those tempted by Reds assets.

Nevertheless, the attacking potency of 20.2% owned Sadio Mane (9.3), who has four assists and a goal over the last three Gameweeks, demands our attention. As does Divock Origi (6.7), who has scored four in four in all competitions.

Swansea City’s visit to West Brom offers further alternative armband options, with backers of Baggies duo Salomon Rondon (6.5) and Matt Phillips (5.4) confident of returns, given the defensive frailties of Bob Bradley’s side on the road.

Away from the Liberty Stadium, the Swans have allowed 15 goals and earned a solitary clean sheet.

We will be back to check in on progress in the poll later this week when we deliver our “Captain Sensible” article offering an analysis of the results and the statistics behind the leading contenders.

Do I need to take a hit this week with my defence? Alonso is coming in for Walker in GW18.

Don't bring Alonso in for 18...you've already missed the train by that point. He has two very good home fixtures but then Spurs (a), Leicester (a), Liverpool (a), and Arsenal (h). Probably pick up Cedric for Lovren.

You've got an injured Can, a Carrol who is probably limited to sub appearances or the treatment room, and Fletcher. Why would you take a hit for a starting player.

      1. Licious Lizard
        • 13 Years

Isn't Can a 50/50 doubt for this GW? He probably just brought in Carroll believing he will get decent minutes and a potential injury is irrelevant in this case. Fletcher bench fodder to save cash...

        1. Postman Ty
          • 11 Years

As far as I'm concerned if a player is 50/50 you have to plan for him to be out. If you've got two very questionable appearances you can't afford to have bench fodder, you need someone actually capable of some points.

How is a potential injury irrelevant? If he gets injured he doesn't play which means you're forced to play Fletcher and hope Can (which is still not someone I would want playing) isn't injured, which is a poor scenario no matter how you spin it.

          1. Licious Lizard
            • 13 Years
            9 years, 4 months ago

To be clear, I don't like neither Fletcher or Can as option. But they are both enablers for him to have 5 premium players.

Regarding Carroll, I agree he is injury prone, but still the odds of him being injured before (or even during) this GW are still fairly/very low. He obviously took a punt on him getting minutes and believe that he can score in those fixtures.

I have a somewhat similar structure, not knocking that at all, but I would hate to be in a position where someone is a doubt. Hopefully a 4th defender would have a decent fixture.

As per Carrol, his highest ever total minutes in a season is 2074, which is about 2/3 of a season (not exactly 'low' chances to miss a game). His last three seasons have been 1440, 1024, and 1090, which suggests he has a greater probability of being injured than playing. He's also played less than half an hour in the last two and missed the 12 games before that.

If he plays he's a great punt, but he would be very lucky to get even 60 minutes I think.

              1. Licious Lizard
                • 13 Years
                9 years, 4 months ago

Again don't get me wrong, I am not saying he won't get injured. But the risk of it happening before him playing on Wednesday isn't very great imo. Of course he can regress, but I think we would have heard something from them if he was ruled out.

With other options such as Origi or Iheanacho, I just don't feel the risk is too high to at least consider a Carroll punt, as Iheanacho must be transferred out in 3 weeks and Origi probably won't play much in 3-4 weeks too. Again now he brought in Carroll, so would be stupid to ship him out before assessing his gametime...

Don't underestimate those last minute 'injuries', look at Sturridge 😉 never seems to matter how late he's confirmed fit, always misses out. But ya hopefully he's good to go, no bad news yet.

I agree there's probably nobody to switch him too, the only viable change would maybe be pumping cash into a 4th defender who you're happy to play, but then the team structure might be messed up (if there was even upgrade cash available).

But ya at the end of the day you're right, he made his Carrol bed, now he has to lay in it. Best of luck to the chap.

    My "cunning plan"

Firmino to Erikson for free this week

    Hold FT over next week

Erikson to Ozil and Rose to Valencia with the 2 FTs following week

Might even catch a cheeky 0.1 cash on Erikson if he goes well in the two good home fixtures.

    Current squad

    Boruc - Pickford

    Alonso - Rose - Cedric - Holebas - Amat

    Sanchez - Hazard - Firmino - Siggy - Can

    Costa - Kane - Anichebe

Probably on par with one of Baldrick's cunning plans to be honest, once reality bites!

I've done exactly that. It is a risk but I think could pay off. Fixtures look great for West Ham and pressure is on them to improve. I could only sell Austin for 6.5m and couldn't really see many other decent options with good fixtures.

I sold Austin and got Llorente in due to concerns over Carroll's game time but regretted it the moment I pushed the button. 2 tough away fixtures vs 2 very easy home fixtures for the Hammers and it's not like Llorente is nailed. First time I've felt transfer regret all season, so annoying.

They need a 'give me my transfer back' chip in this game. Lets hope Llorente manages to get his head on a Siggy cross, at least both West Brom and Borough will be very attack minded against a fragile Swansea defence which could leave space for Swansea to create something....

Can't believe the lack of traffic for Ibra. Good fixtures through to MARCH, Utd have improved and he had 4 in 4 prior to Spurs game.

His age makes him a rotation risk but Utd don't have anyone to replace him and his fitness looks as good as ever.

Personally I can do Firm and Ienacheo out for Antonio and Ibra

I am a happy owner and I agree. See my post below.

He has very good fixtures and is currently in pretty decent form. I agree he could be rotated for a game, but I definitely don't think he is more at risk than many other options. Hasn't he played almost every game for United except his suspension? His age is of course a small issue, but at the same time, he is not running nearly as much as other options.

    A) Firmino > Eriksen
    B) Firmino > Payet
    C) Walker > VVD
    D) Save FT

    Heaton - Pickford
    Walker - Alonso - Smith - Evans - Amat
    Sanchez - Hazard - Firmino - Siggy - Allen
    Costa - Defoe - Iheanacho

    Inspire me, folks.
