Fixtures

Frisking the Fixtures – Gameweek 17 – The Strong

After a busy week, with both Gameweeks 15 and 16 consigned to the history books, we now see a slight shift in the fixtures over the next four-to-six rounds of matches, with many sides set to benefit from a pair of home clashes in Gameweeks 18 and 19.

Man United, Arsenal, Swansea and Chelsea are four such teams, while Watford assets could return to our radars as their upcoming schedule improves considerably.

Man United

(wba, SUN, MID, whm, LIV, sto)

West Bromwich Albion and Liverpool are the only two sides from the current top 10 that United face over the next six Gameweeks, with the two home fixtures against Sunderland and Middlesbrough, in particular, looking very favourable.

The Black Cats rank third for shots allowed inside the box over the last four Gameweeks with 43, while although ‘Boro are a better defensive side, they’ve still conceded in each of their previous three away trips.

West Ham United also feature in the top four for the most shots conceded inside the box and big chances created, while West Brom have only managed one clean sheet in their last 13.

The Stoke City and Liverpool match-ups are slightly trickier, but there look to be plenty of opportunities for perhaps Paul Pogba, and certainly Zlatan Ibrahimovic, to harvest attacking returns.

At the other end of the pitch, clean sheets look a strong possibility against Sunderland and ‘Boro, with those two teams managing just five goals between them over the last four Gameweeks.

Stoke City have also failed to score in two of their last three home fixtures, while West Ham rank 19th for shots inside the box over the last four Gameweeks with only 21.

The West Brom and Liverpool match-ups are slightly unfavourable, but providing he stays fit, it’s hard not to see Phil Jones providing strong value priced at just 4.8 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) over the coming period.

Arsenal

(mci, WBA, CPL, bou, swa, BUR)

Once Sunday’s trip to the Etihad is out of the way, Arsenal’s upcoming schedule looks enticing.

Shkodran Mustafi’s absence is a concern regarding clean sheet potential, but all five matches from Gameweek 18 onwards should provide Arsene Wenger’s side with a decent opportunity to register a shut-out.

Crystal Palace and West Brom have scored 11 and seven goals respectively over the past four Gameweeks, though, and do offer a reasonable goal threat.

Swansea City are also in good goal scoring form at home, so it’s only the Burnley match-up which appears to offer assured clean sheet returns.

Arsenal defenders may struggle to live up to their premium price tags, then, unless they can deliver some attacking points.

Those five fixtures are much more favourable from an attacking point of view, though, given that Swansea, Palace and Bournemouth are the three clubs who have conceded the most goals over the past four Gameweeks.

Burnley have also conceded 16 times in their seven away matches, while even the Man City and West Brom clashes could see the Gunners register a goal or two.

With the home fixtures being the more favourable, it’s Theo Walcott who could be set to benefit, having netted in his last two appearances at the Emirates, while Alexis Sanchez flourishes more on the road, scoring four goals and adding an assist in his last two away outings.

Swansea City

(mid, WHM, BOU, cpl, ARS, liv)

The Swans’ kind run of fixtures continues for four more matches, before their schedule turns sour from Gameweek 21 onwards.

From an attacking point of view, the outlook appears very bright, given that West Ham and Bournemouth rank second and fourth respectively for shots conceded inside the box over the last four Gameweeks, while, as already mentioned, Palace have leaked 11 goals in their last four encounters.

‘Boro’s confidence may also have been dented after shipping three goals to Liverpool in midweek, so Gylfi Sigurdsson should remain a leading mid-price option in midfield, while Fernando Llorente, who has scored four goals in his last two home matches, could continue to flourish at the Liberty Stadium in particular.

The next four match-ups perhaps aren’t quite as appealing from a defensive standpoint, given that Palace are in such strong goal scoring form, while Bournemouth have scored in each of their last three away matches.

The ‘Boro and West Ham fixtures appear more favourable, though, so Jordi Amat should prove to be a viable starter through the coming weeks, and offer solid value.

Once we hit Gameweek 21, though, it’s likely we’ll be looking to shed Swans assets due to the swing in the fixtures.

Watford

(sun, CPL, TOT, sto, MID, bou)

With only the clash against Tottenham Hotspur standing out as being unfavourable in the next six, Watford assets could be about to come back onto our radars.

The next two fixtures look very appealing against two of the leakiest defences in the Premier League, so Troy Deeney may have the ideal match-ups in which to end his nine-match goal drought.

The Hornets skipper was benched for last night’s trip to City, though Walter Mazzarri has today revealed that his decision was a tactical one – Deeney sits on four yellows and his manager was keen to protect him in order to have him available for the Sunderland encounter.

Stoke, ‘Boro and Bournemouth are all fairly solid defensive sides, but those fixtures should still provide the Hornets with a reasonable opportunity to bag a goal or two.

Etienne Capoue could also be of use over the coming weeks, then, particularly off the bench if we see some rotation over the festive period.

The defensive prospects for Walter Mazzarri’s men are also fairly promising, with the Sunderland, ‘Boro and Stoke clashes appearing the most likely to yield a clean sheet.

Sunderland have failed to score in their last two matches, while ‘Boro and Stoke have only managed three and four goals respectively over the last four Gameweeks.

While the Palace and Bournemouth fixtures are trickier, they still present decent match-ups, so the likes of Jose Holebas and Daryl Janmaat appear decent value options over the next month.

Also Consider

West Ham United
It’s at the back in particular where Hammers assets could be set to profit over the next six Gameweeks, with home fixtures against Hull City, and to a lesser extent, Palace looking favourable.

There are also decent away trips to Swansea and ‘Boro, so Winston Reid, who has scored once and registered three assists this season, may prove to be a decent differential.

The other two matches on the current slate are away to Leicester City and at home to Manchester United, though, so there is some downside to investing in a Hammers defender.

The fact that Slaven Bilic’s side have only managed two goals in home clashes against Sunderland and Burney is a concern when considering investing in a Hammers attacker, perhaps leaving Dimitri Payet, Michail Antonio and Andy Carroll on the periphery of our thoughts.

Chelsea
From a defensive standpoint, Chelsea’s next six fixtures (cpl, BOU, STO, tot, lei, HUL) are deemed the most favourable according to our Season Ticker.

Most FPL bosses already own at least one Blues defender, but should you not own both Eden Hazard and Diego Costa, there looks an obvious temptation to double up at the back, with Marcos Alonso and Cesar Azpilicueta the leading options.

Only the Spurs and, to a lesser extent, Stoke match-ups look slightly unfavourable from an attacking outlook, so Costa and Hazard, providing he recovers from the knock that saw him miss the trip to Sunderland, should remain among the leading attacking options.

Middlesbrough
Of ‘Boro’s next six matches (SWA, bur, mun, LEI, wat, WHM), only the Gameweek 19 trip to Old Trafford is really off-putting.

Given that Aitor Karanka’s men have kept two clean sheets in their last four home matches, it’s members of their backline in particular that could appeal, with Ben Gibson and perhaps Antonio Barragan currently appearing the safest routes.

The fixture list is also pretty positive from an attacking sense, but with ‘Boro the lowest scorers in the top flight with just 13 goals, it’s unlikely that Alvaro Negredo, and providing he recovers from a foot problem, Gaston Ramirez, will be attracting much interest.

What is this amazing obsession with TV and SV? If you pick the right players that score then by definition, their value will increase.

This game is about choosing the players that score points:

There has been little correlation this season other than Costa where players have been consistent scorers. The notion that a high SV will give you a better chance later in the season is an hilarious furphy!

How? You've still got to pick the right players. Just because a player costs 13M doesn't mean he'll outscore an 11M player.

The difference between having 6M for your 4th mid or 8M is significant in terms of the options available to you. That's not up for debate.

There are often great value players in that budget bracket, but your higher priced players are priced as such for a reason.

My favorite topic. I repost a earlier published post from me..

Look at Team Value comparision below.
Basically no difference between high and low Team Value when it comes to dubble gameweeks and Wildcard.

Example of a skilled manager hunting price rices:
        Price rice:
        Costa +1,3
        Sanchez +0,9
        Hazard +1,1
        Defoe +0,9
        Konchielny +0,5
        McAuley +0,4
        Holebas +0,3
        Heaton +0,3

        Total price rice: 5,5
        Team value 105.5
Profit when selling; +2,4 -> 102,4 to spend on wildcard

Example of price rice for calm managers waiting for friday pressers:

        Costa +0,2
        Sanchez +0,4
        Hazard +0,3
        Defoe +0,4
        Konchielny +0,4
        McAuley +0,2
        Holebas +0,2
        Heaton +0,1

        Total price rice: 2,2
        Team Value 102,2
Profit when selling; +1,0 -> 101,0 to spend on wildcard

        Concratulations all Team Value hunters!
You can go for Mane/Erikssen/Walker instead of Firminho/Alli/Rose!
        Whats the difference?

Conclusion: Price rice hunters will gain Team Value but will miss out on some points due to midweek injuries and suspensions..

Team Value vs Points. I'will always go for points!

Baffled by the obsession with it - yes TV does play a part in the long run, but the guy sitting above me by like 70 points and top of my mini league has 4m less TV than mine. All about points and not about getting in value on price movers, which is seemingly what a lot of people focus on more than form/fixtures/etc when choosing their transfers.

Yes you are. It's about managing and trying to pick in for players to get you the points. If you haven't already got the in form players then you start falling behind. Having a high TV gives you a lot more flexibility by having a wider pool of players to pick from.

If you're 100s of points behind, then agreed, you're playing the game wrong. You can capitalise on TV rises and still focus on picking the right players and scoring well. It's a balance. It's all part of the game.

          No of course not
Where it comes into affect is at seasons end when you are trying to see out mini/money leagues
If you are still up near the top of the table and have a much better tv than your rivals you can simply use your financial clout to have a better overall team than your rivals it is as simple at that
Of course there is a risk evolved with making early moves but if it don't work out just take the money and run that is the way that a manager trying to put value in their team will look at it anyway

I understand your point, that it's good to have as an added extra, but the problem is most people are chasing bandwagon points and TV. It's a fools game. Judgement is better. Sanchez doesn't score+Diego doesn't score = 4 points. All the TV in the world won't change that.

The sensible way to play the TV game is to identify undervalued assets and bring them in before the bandwagon takes off
But you will also have to jump on a few bandwagons that are already rolling also the trick is to jump on the right ones not all bandwagons are foolish picking the right ones can make or break you

I think there are a few ways to play the investment in team value game, and all can work. I really admire those who do it the best way, as you suggest Ogie -- those who predict the low value point scorers of the future so they will reap both points and money (as money naturally follows points). In addition, especially in a game that has 38 trials, one can initially hop onto some bandwagons to raise team value as an investment to load up on expensive players later on. This latter strategy assumes that more expensive players are likely to be more productive. Last year, the likes of Mahrez undermined that strategy. This year, more money may matter more, but then again, Kun is not as impactful, and clean sheets are so far, sparse. As a money-maker, I am going to turn my strategy more towards points, and try to ignore bandwagons (e.g. I skipped over Lallana, a likely triple rise) yesterday, now that I am $4M over par. Not sure I will make up the ground this year though.

True, but there is a high correlation between points producers and future money gainers (e.g. Lallana train leaving the station). The best approach is the guru who bought Lallana ahead of his huge haul and got his points AND the gains that are a comin'...Others will just climb on board, get the money gains, hope for more points, and then at worst, cash-in with a profit to be spent elsewhere. Limited trades make this strategy difficult to sustain.

Absolutely. The best strategy in a fantasy market driven game is to predict the future points scorers. If you are accurate, you get both points and the future price gains. Some of us are not so good at that, so we start off at climbing on some money trains to make value/profit, as an investment, and then have extra wealth to spend on more expensive players. The key to this strategy is tempering it with prudent choices, and knowing when to stop making trades for money and restrict trades for anticipated points (e.g. a trade for Ibra next gw regardless of his production this weekend, as he has some easy games coming up, as opposed to the next high rising player who happened to surprise this coming weekend).

I don't agree that he's the best in the world. He's never won. 90th was his highest rank. So what if he spent the last 8 years here learning the game and slow playing it. Sure, that's how he's consistently in the top 5k, but he clearly doesn't have the cutting edge to take him to the top.

I've been playing this game for about the same amount of time, but I was what everyone here would call a 'casual' before last season. I never really knew about price rises or the strategy in this game before I found this forum last year. A lo and behold, I finished 5k. Every season prior I was 100k+, but I never even paid attention to OR. I have fantasy experience in other sports, so I was good enough to win my mini-leagues, but once I stumbled upon this forum, I blew everyone away. This forum can get basically anyone into the top 5-10k if you pay enough attention. Had no idea how seriously people took this. But once I found this forum, I got into it. And I learned. Then, I played the Fantasy Euro game this summer and finished #1 overall. What I'm trying to say is that I credit his consistency to Fantasy Football Scout. I agree there's a lot of luck involved, but if he hasn't won, he's not the best. Basically, I'm saying I am 🙂

Kidding, but I just have a hard time calling anyone the best if they haven't won. Maybe that's just me.

My ML rival, top of the league, is playing the game exactly as you suggest, ignoring TV. He's flying, on 942 points and 3,006 OR.

His TV is 102.8 to my 106.7, so the variance can be that significant, even for a player you is doing well. I sure you don't think he should put his cue back in the rack.

I should stress, he's not fluked his position. He always competes for our ML title.

True, but there are game changers and they tend to be expensive items. The greater your TV-SV, the greater the options you can bring to bear. Not always the case, but most times. In short it gives you 'the added option' if required.

This season has rearranged the fundamentals of that notion though. Other than Costa, we have seen no consistent scorers or as previously described, "season keepers."

Last year we feasted on Vardy and Mahrez along with the usual heavy hitters. Previously it was Siggy, Michu and others that gave us consistent points and value.

The evidence for me is looking directly at the Scouts that are undoubtedly great managers however with the goal posts changed, they are struggling big time.

I have a high TV, not because I've tried to get it but because I've taken a lot of hits trying to get the right team.

I do believe having a good TV will matter later in the season, to be able to afford high priced better performing players. Of course experts who chose the right players in the early GW's don't need to worry about TV and I'd rather be in their position, with high points and a satisfactory TV, then mine.

Agree with regards to your second paragraph. In the long run, we hope that a high TV will yield more points based on having an all-star roster compared to others who may have to compromise on less expensive players who may not produce at the same level (key word there is "may"). This still requires the skill of choosing the right producers, even the expensive ones, at the right time. For some who are weak at this latter tactic, a high team value can potentially offset this by loading up on more consistent producers -- who tend to be priced high -- with the premise that they will outscore the mix of high, medium and lower priced players on teams with lesser monetary value.

Good TV enables a better pick in terms of a def 4.5 V 5.5 or upgrading a mid/striker in the the 2nd half of the season imho,
Using value gained properly is the key, I get your point but I have always made the most of TV and I think it has helped my OR over the years, 1.5k; 1.5k; 744, many of competitors simply failed to live with me in terms of points/TV, personally used a correlation between the two if you can synthesise those factors.
Also If Fpl didn't see it as part of the overall strategy of the game why would they bother with this tool?

I agree completely with your first paragraph. Prices lag points not the other way round.

But not at all with your final paragraph... Of course you can expect more points if you have a higher SV. You can afford players with higher expected points.

You have to pick the right players with points potential but you need to be able to afford them in the first place.

Any players who hit form have increased in value if you don't jump on it you will miss out. As I pointed out before players this season seem to have a run of 3-4 GWs of scoring points and because of that the bandwagons come along and raise theri price.

      Capoue
      allen
      Phillips
      Zaha
      Lallana
      Eriksen
      Son
      Antonio
      Siggy
the list goes on. If you don't jump on these when they hit a bit of form then you're missing out on points and money. this season more than ever is the one to jump on the bandwagons cos palyers seem to hit form for 3-4 GWs then slow down.

Plenty of assertions here but little substance.

Did anyone actually make any attempt to quantify budget value? Well, actually yes. I did. And I have yet to see any better approximation.

According to my estimate, 0.5m should be worth around 0.45 points per GW to a top 1k manager. So 0.1m is worth 0.09 points per GW. But even once you have that estimated number there are many wrinkles.

So, let me say first that "to a top 1k manager" is the key phrase above. To be in the top 1k you have to be getting the majority of player and captaincy selection decisions right, whether by luck or judgement or a combination of both. Luck or skill with player/captaincy decisions is absolutely the most important part of the game. So, everything I will write below is subject to that caveat and assumes we are talking about a manager that is getting the bulk of his player decisions right.

OK, let's clarify terms first. I will use TV to mean "team value", the current FPL value of your players plus bank. I will use SV to mean "sale value", the amount that would be realised if you sold a player or players. Which is most important? Well, subject to the caveat above then TV is. TV is active. SV is potential. But there is a trap here, sometimes a manager will avoid selling a high value player because of loss of TV and "if I want them back I will lose money on the deal". That can cause you to behave in a sub-optimal way where points are concerned and you immediately fail the caveat test.

Right, let's tackle the DGW myth. Let's start with a review of what we are talking about this season.

There will be 3 (minimum) DGW opportunities. One will be caused by the EFL Cup Final on 26/2. That is GW26. Two of the following games will be postponed that weekend: City v United; Hull v Burnley; Soton v Arsenal; Leicester v Liverpool. So, 4 teams with blanks and 2 games needing to be re-scheduled.

The second will be occasioned by the FA Cup QFs on 11/3. That is GW28. Anything up to 16 teams could blank that weekend though on previous experience you'd expect 4-6 games to be affected. That would cause a DGW for 8-12 teams and that will probably be the big one assuming they are all scheduled for the same midweek. As far as I can tell from a fairly cursory look, the first free slot for those games would be GW34 midweek (25-26/4) because the intervening period has UEFA EL/CL games plus an international break to navigate.

The third will be caused by the FAC SFs on 22-23/4. As many as 4 games (8 teams) could be blankers. That's GW34. It seems possible, in fact, that some teams could lose and gain FPL fixtures in the same gameweek. Whatever, we'll know nearer the time. The clear slot for the games postponed for the SFs would be GW37 midweek. Pretty much as last season in fact.

OK, so let's assume that the majority of people are wildcarding in GW33/4 to take advantage of the main DGW series. That is 6 games before the end of the season. And let's be generous and assume they have a stonking resultant TV, 1.5m better than their rivals (meaning that after the wildcard their team has a TV 1.5m better). What's that worth? Well, 6 x 1.35 points is my estimate. Around 8 points. Is that a big deal? You decide. But remember, that assumes they are making top 1k level player decisions, meaning they are getting most of them right. Their rival only needs to choose one cheaper option (Lallana over Coutinho for example) and succeed with it and the TV/SV advantage is neutralised.

People like to say that TV is important come DGW time because we all face tricky decisions at that time and we feel more comfortable being able to have (say) Coutinho rather than Lallana. It takes the pressure off. And I would say that that's where the biggest effect of TV come DGW time actually is. It is psychological. It can make it easier for us to pick the players that look "the best". But it can also make it easier for us to be less rigorous in evaluating other, less high-profile options, some of which will undoubtedly out-perform the big name players. That happens every time the DGW season comes around.

If both managers make the optimum decisions, the one with 1.5m better TV comes out around 8 points better from GW34-38. You can decide for yourself how big a deal that is. But don't pretend it is more. It almost certainly isn't.

Anyway, there's lots more that could be said about the value of TV/SV, how it declines in importance as the season wears on for example (because there are less GWs left for it to work in). But this is a mammoth TL;DR post already. So I'll leave it at that I think.

I disagree completley there HAS been correlation between price rises and form.

My team is proof of this i will nearly always go for a player who is due a price rise and has nice fixtures upcoming.

I am very reluctant to let any of my players drop in value unless I would be unable to get them back or they are big hitters and nice upcoming fixtures.

I am not afraid to take hits.

Most of the time they work out with a bit of research and common sense.

Now I have a decent team value which should in theory give me an edge against my competitors for the rest of the season as I will have a greater flexibility and choice.

Ville Ronka plays the game the complete opposite to me with no hits and ignores price.

      Guess who is ahead ?

    A) Firmino & Diomande > Lallana & Origi (to play 3-4-3 w/ Haz, Sanch, Sig, Kane, Costa)

    B) Firmino, Allen, Kane > Eriksen, Lallana, Lukaku (to play 3-5-2, but -4)

Still not sold on Origi, so I think B is better long term... Torn between sticking with Kane (who is garbage imo) and Eriksen.

Sanchez Lallana Sigurdsson (Coquelin De Roon)
      Aguero Ibra Costa

For once, I plan to give money to charity for Christmas (instead of stuff people don't really need). Any particular charity to recommend? Cheers.

That's a very nice idea. Would be great for FFS to set up some kind of yearly justgiving page, maybe around this time of year where we could all contribute towards one charity. There's a great sense of community here and you just know the money count would snowball

Guys, your advice would be highly appreciated?

      Grant
      Walker / Cedric / Holebas
      Sanchez / Firmino / Hazard / Siggy
      Kane / Costa / Origi
      (Pickford / Mcauley / Amat / Fletcher)

      A) Firmino -> Erikson
      B) Firmino & Mcauley -> Lallana/Antonio & Azpi (-4)
      C) any other suggestion

      What should I do? (2FT, 0.2 ITB)

      Foster, Pickford

      Alonso, McAuley, Holebas, Pieters, Amat

      Hazard, Sanchez, Walcott, Sigurdsson, Capoue

      Kane, Costa, Ihenacho

I can upgrade Capoue to Lallana only with Campbell as 3rd ST.

Ville Ronke had Heaton and Williams on the bench. That's 23 points.

      He got 40 pts

      He would have got 63.

I think it happens to a lot of us once in a while, although a 23 point bench is hard to swallow.
Heaton hasn't been looking as amazing lately as he did in the beginning of the season and very hard to predict he would save a pen and get the 3 baps. Some people are playing Heaton every week on account of his occasional monster scores, but I at least didn't see it coming.
Williams was even harder to predict. Getting his first attacking return of the season + 3 baps in a game where most had Arsenal as a clear favourite.
        Bad luck.

If I'd transferred in Eriksen & Lallana & Rondon and captained any of them I'd have got 120 points.
