The Gameweek 22 captain poll is likely to be dominated by players from London clubs, with all three of Arsenal, Chelsea and Spurs boasting the form and fixtures to endorse their assets.

At the start of the season, Spurs’ trip to Manchester City would have been marked down as a daunting prospect for Mauricio Pochettino’s men. But, on current form, Spurs on-fire trio Dele Alli (8.7), Christian Eriksen (8.7) and Harry Kane (11.1) will all be backed to return points to contest for the captaincy.

Pep Guardiola’s side were in disarray in Sunday’s 4-0 defeat to Everton and will surely struggle to repel a Spurs attack that have scored an impressive 14 goals over their last four outings.

Kane’s hat-trick against West Brom means he now has six goals in the last four Gameweeks and may even see him challenge for top spot in our poll.

Unsurprisingly, more than 77,000 FPL managers have swooped for the Spurs striker ahead of Gameweek 22, as the fall-out from Diego Costa’s absence at Leicester City rolls on.

Eriksen is also a strong contender on the back of a 10-point haul in Saturday’s rout of the Baggies – his sixth double-digit return in nine Gameweeks.

Alli’s away form is also difficult to overlook: he has registered six goals on the road, more than both Kane and Eriksen.

In contrast, City’s Sergio Aguero (12.8) seems unlikely to tussle at the top of this week’s poll, yet, with 11 goals this term, it could be dangerous to underestimate the 22.1% owned Argentine.

Alexis Sanchez (11.9) remains the pick of Arsenal’s assets ahead of an Emirates meeting with travel-sick Burnley.

Away from home, the Clarets have just one clean sheet and conceded 20 goals, indicating that the 36.9% owned Chilean will be granted ample opportunity to continue a run that has seen him return points in eight of the last nine Gameweeks.

Elsewhere in the Gunners’ camp, an ankle injury picked up by striker Olivier Giroud (8.7) in Arsenal’s 4-0 win over Swansea City will likely temper interest in the Frenchman.

Mesut Ozil (9.5) may prove a popular alternative, however.

The German returned an assist on his comeback at the Liberty Stadium and has scored five times so far this term.

Chelsea’s obliging Gameweek 22 fixture finds them hosting a Hull City side that has shipped 24 goals on the road and earned a solitary clean sheet.

Diego Costa’s (10.4) role in Sunday’s contest remains in doubt and that is likely to see our attentions drawn to other options on Antonio Conte’s teamsheet.

On the back of just one goal and an assist in the last seven matches, Eden Hazard (10.4)’s recent performances may count against him. However, with seven of his nine goals arriving at Stamford Bridge, the Belgian remains a strong contender for returns.

Pedro (7.0) has been added to the poll on the back of two goals and an assist in four, offering a cut-price alternative to the 33.5% owned Hazard.

Pedro has returned in five of his last six home starts, providing four goals and five assists.

Liverpool and Manchester United may have battled to a 1-1 draw on Sunday, but both have far stronger Gameweek 22 fixtures.

The Reds face Swansea City at Anfield, with Paul Clement’s side having conceded 22 times on the road, with 18 goals shipped in their last six Gameweeks.

That should attract high interest in Liverpool’s attacking midfielders Roberto Firmino (8.4), Adam Lallana (7.7) and Philippe Coutinho (8.3). The latter is expected to earn his first start in Gameweek 22, following a long injury lay-off and two substitute appearances.

Zlatan Ibrahimovic (11.6)’s remarkable consistency should also garner plenty of votes.

The Swede travels to Stoke City having provided yet another goal in Sunday’s stalemate: he has registered attacking returns in nine of his last ten Gameweeks.

Everton’s Romelu Lukaku (9.5) also presents a convincing case. He scored a third goal in four outings against Manchester City on Sunday and travels to face a Crystal Palace outfit that continue to toil under Sam Allardyce.

The Eagles have conceded eight goals and have failed to earn a clean sheet since the former England manager took the reins.

Among the differential options, Bournemouth’s Junior Stanislas (5.2) once again provides an enticing option.

Owned by just 2.9%, the midfielder’s spot-kick against Hull City confirmed his status behind first choice taker Callum Wilson, as he prepares to host a Watford side that has shipped 19 goals on their travels.

West Brom duo Matt Phillips (5.8) and Salomon Rondon (6.8) have the home form to make them intriguing alternatives for the armband.

Sunderland arrive at The Hawthorns having failed to pick up a clean sheet away from home and have also conceded more headed attempts than any other side this season.

That will surely hand Phillips the opportunity to add to his four assists already accrued on home turf.

Backers of the 8.8% owned Rondon will also be optimistic he can expose a frail Black Cats backline to find a sixth home goal of the campaign.

We will be back to check in on progress in the poll later this week when we deliver our “Captain Sensible” article offering an analysis of the results and the statistics behind the leading contenders.

Am I right that Giroud's injury was picked up just before he scored and he managed to play up to play another 30mins?

It doesn't work like that mate. Look at cazorla. He played an entire game with his injury and it ended up putting him out for months.

What to do IF Evans & Giroud will be out?

    A) ake -> chambers (to filed 3 defs) for -4
    B) giroud -> defoe for -4
    C) evans, giroud -> baines, rondon for -8
    D) field 2 defs and play Fletcher

I think both will be OK. Evans was close to playing this weekend. If not A as this is a good move long term also

Hello, couldn't focus on the GW this time due to work - so completely missed the Costa news :/

Has there been any update on his possibility of inclusion next GW, or is shipping him off the best thing to do asap - before his price drops EVEN further down?

    2FTs and almost decided on
    Kun+Amat > Kane+Baines
    to leave this...

    Heaton (Jaku)
    Walker Lovren Baines (Evans, Pieters)

    Kane Zlatan Carroll

Guys, really confused here. Will appreciate any/all help.

    So, team is
    Heaton Grant
    Alonso Brunt Jones McAuley Friend
    Hazard Sanchez Philips Snodgrass Allen
    Ibrahimovic Kane Gray

Somehow, ended up with both Brunt and McAuley. Need one of either Rose or Walker.
Now, I can do it by this
    Gray to Crouch
    McAuley to Rose/Walker
Also, if I get Crouch in, would like to get rid of Allen.
Then, can do Allen to Stanislas.
Won't mind taking a hit as I did pretty good this gameweek.
Have almost exact funds to do this. Considering price rise/falls.

I always think of it in simple terms - is the player you are getting in better than the player you are getting out.

      Stanislas is better than Allen.

      Rose/Walker are better than McAuley

Crouch and Gray are much of a muchness. Crouch good if you are happy with a non playing third striker when Stoke get a proper one in.

    3. ILOVEBAPS

Do the two but leave Allen a week. No need to take a hit on Stan this week imo.

    4. Alnair

I think you're ideal move is a straight-forward Snodgrass/Allen to Mirallas. I think Lukaku would take too much effort to get in from your current team and that defense is actually pretty good for the next 6 fixtures or so.

        Thanks for the help everyone.
Yes, defense is okay for the time being, just the one WBA defender would be enough I think.
It comes down to Crouch really as I have no other option in that range.

Will, i think all your ideas are correct and although i like a gamble (have gone -20 and -12 so far for big weeks) with the fixtures like they are i think you can gain more with patience. you've got two from def, no point in doing that with spurs away imo, play them both, may not come off but at least haven't take hits. also both are dangerous going forward against a really poor defence. If you have a FT and the money do allen to stan id say

Thanks Gunner, I was thinking along the same lines as well.
Also, based my decisions on what Jonty said above as I compared player to player.
Even though I do like to wait to make my transfers, but these price rises/falls really make it difficult. Missed out on quite a few occasions this season by slightest of margins as I don't like to take players or drop them based just on their rise/fall.
This is my first FPL season anyway, so, don't dwell on it too much...

    Pick one

    A) Baines Brunt Monreal
    B) Baines, Brunt, Rose
    C) Rose, Brunt, Monreal
    D) Brunt Rose Alonso

Not sure it counts, but I was very close to pulling the trigger on Antonio > Satnislas for -4! Once Bournemouth got that penalty I cried a little inside, especially as I own Wilson.

Smooth: Sanchez captain. Transferred in Alli, Chambers, Stanislas, Giroud (all getting points) for Firmino, Cedric, Fletcher, Costa.

Did Origi + Jrod to Crouch + Alli (switching from 343 to 352, already did Costa + Fletcher to Lukaku + Phillips for next week).

Alonso and Valdes points were great as well. Sanchez (C).

No Kane is a bummer since I had him for Burnley and Hull. Very similar to last year when he was on a nice streak with 4 in 4 or something, I bought him for some tasy home games where he didn't score for 3 or 4 games, sold him again and he got 6 in 7. My ultimate fpl troll, never bringing him in again!

Rough: Wild carded to avoid -8 in my vital FFS cup quarterfinal. Sold Alonso when my opponent kept him, and worse, he captained Kane.

That was on the basis of you having the highest rank in the competition at the time .....and not doing silly things like wasting a wildcard and getting rid of Alonso 😉

        2. Bash Villa
          9 years, 6 months ago

But I agree, cups make one focus more on opponent's team more than his own team.

I had Kane in his game vs Watford and sold him for Costa for -4 just because my opponent had Costa. That's a move I wouldn't normally do. And needless to say 14 points wasted.

Smooth for me was bringing in Antonio for Siggy. I wanted a set-and-forget player for the next 8-10 weeks until wildcard so it was a medium-term move that paid off immediately on the way to a GW score of 98.

Rough was the Costa saga, not because I owned him but because it caused a lot of managers to jump into Kane's haul. Lucky for them, disappointing for me. Rough was also Lukaku's late yellow which cost me 2 points and left me short of the magic 100. Can't complain though. 🙂

My best week of the season! 74k GW rank and 94(-4) points.

Smooth; Kane, Heaton, Alonso, Ibra(c), Pedro in for -4 for Walcott, Toby and even Carroll joined the party!

Rough; Hummed and haahed all week on Kane or Ibra captain. Logic and the pain of Hull & Burnley swung me towards Ibra. Not a total fail but 10 points dropped. Never saw WBA crumbling like that though....

      Rough:

-Alonso the only defender I had with a chance of playing and team a mess generally so wildcarded. Removed Alonso on wildcard at last minute due to slight doubt surrounding him. Threw toys out the pram during the Chelsea game, switched off the TV after the 2nd goal, closed my laptop, and swore never to look at the game again. All my new defenders got CS but left me 3 points worse off then Spaniard's score.

      Smooth:

Did Fletcher -> Stanislas, was then forced to take a hit to do Ake to Chambers to field 11 after the Costa news. Worked out alright.

Best gwk of the season for me, 101 points and a huge green arrow. Didn't have Kane, but had Alonso, Walker, Eriksen, Sanchez(C) and lots of 6's and 7's.

Been wanting to do Foster -> Heaton for a hit for most of the season now, waiting for a good week where i'd be almost guaranteed to make up the 4 points. Would've done it this week if not for the Costa thing forcing a hit which is a shame as it would've been perfect.

So, in a much better way of saying it:
Smooth: Heaton, Alonso, Fraser (nice surprise of points from a cheapie midfielder, started instead of Lallana), Sanchez, Alli, Ibrahimovic and Defoe (c) all scored - some more than others. 76(-4) and got food for thought throughout the games on who to ship Costa for.
Also - got my keepers right (played Heaton over Foster), for the first time in ages. Not that it was exactly a hard decision this week.

Rough: Playing Brunt over Love wasn't a decision I thought would cost me 5 points.

Rough: Costa and Kane. More specifically, transferring Kane and Hazard out for Costa and Alli straight after GW20 fixtures. Then saw the news on Costa, but couldn't face taking a -4 to get Kane back so went for Lukaku. Also McAuley (unfair to give him the OG I reckon, original shot looked to be on target).

      Rough:
-Waking up 15 minutes before the deadline on Saturday only to read the news re: Costa and then making the hasty decision (as I was already on a -8 hit) to activate my wildcard and change out Costa for Kane, and sort out the Ake problem. I could have saved 0.2 if i'd checked the news before going to bed! (Kane up, Costa down).
-Not then captaining Kane as the deadline ran out before I could switch!

      Smooth:
Pretty much everything else... 100 points all out, with no point hits thanks to the WC. Alonso, Sanchez & Kane all scoring big.
Up to inside the top 400, team in great shape including a pretty strong bench.

Pretty much all rough for me. Got rid of Costa for Giroud for a hit and captained him instead of Sanchez. No Spurs or Costa meant that I dropped 50k places and only just clinging on to top 100k now.

Lots of smooth but probably more rough...

Smooth - Wild carded this week and brought in Defoe, Giroud, Alli, Rose and Azpil. All returned. Decent GW score of 77 and broke in to the top 20k

Rough - Took out Kane & Alonso. Wild card probably cost me 30-40 points.

Smooth: I made my transfers early in the week (2 free), took out Capoue and Smith for Stanislas and Chambers. Deadline day morning I saw the Costa news so took a hit by doing Anichebe to Crouch to have 11 starters. 109 points overall without Kane.

Rough: Nothing really, mini-league rival Captained Kane.

Rough: transferred in Ake for Cedric for whom got me 4 points in 7 games, who before that I had Fuchs in that spot, who got me 1 point in 4 games. I'd literally have been better off playing Amat for the past 12 weeks or so.

Smooth: Doesn't get much smoother than a brace from your defender 🙂

Transferred in Costa Ake and De Roon for -8 only to find that with Alonso and Hazard too that Ake made four into three a problem once Chelsea recalled him. Who saw that coming?
Costa then decides China is better than the Premiership so I transferred him back out for Defoe.
So a -8 hit to bring a player in and out was not my best move of the season.
My smooth was 95 points so all told I was pleased with the week

I got a rough & smooth GW at the same time!

      Took an -8 pt hit
Alonso (ouch), Benteke & Costa > Chambers, Giroud & Kane

But I'm glad my team was like

      Heaton (10)
      Chambers (7) Walker (11) Holebas (6)
      Lallana (2) Sanchez (22) Eriksen (10) Phillips (2)
      Kane (17) Giroud (5) Ibra (7)

So I scored 99 points even though I took Alonso out and moved up the rankings from 150k to 79k

    89. Cocky Spaniel Alves

      Rough:

      1) considered Pedro or Siggy to Phillips for the past few weeks, decided against it. This week thought Stanislas is a better option than Phillips and decided to get him in. Bottled it in the end and went for Phillips after all.

      2) Changed captaincy from Kane to Alexis on Saturday morning.

      3) I have absolutely no idea how this had happened but looking at my team at 4 p.m. ish I noticed that somehow Alonso was sitting last on my bench behind Pieters and Carrick. Meanwhile Lovren was in the starting XI. I will never know how this has happened. Last time I looked at my team when I changed captaincy Alonso was still "on the pitch".

So I lost something like 31 points through those decisions / happenings.

      Smooth:

At least I sold Siggy instead of Pedro for Phillips and ended up with 87 points.

Wildcarded my shambles of a team,

Rough: in the process removing Alonso (not my smartest move) and Walker.

Smooth: Still managed 93 points without Kane or Alonso with 10 of my 11 players scoring points- namely Crouchy, Ibra, Giroud, Alli, Eriksen, Pedro, San(c)hez, Baines, Chambers, Rose.

      Utterly essential even at 6.5.

He's basically (due to how much Hazard roams) a left winger who gets CS points, which considering the amount of Chelsea clean sheets, is not to be sniffed at.

Already top scoring defender despite not playing the first 5/6 games of the season. Will be the top defender come season end by quite a margin, assuming he stays injury free. Attacking threat off the scale for a defender.

Probably the best value player in the game for me.

Both guys ahead in my mini league have Kane. Not owning him is giving me knightmares.

Only way to get him in is to Giroud > Kane and Coutinho > Stanislas which just seems silly with Coutinho facing Swansea and Giroud against Burnley, although both possible won't start. Leaves me with this if I make the transfers:

    Heaton
    Rose Baines Brunt
    Sanchez Alli Phillips Stanislas
    Ibra Kane Lukaku

I expect better from City. Can't see them being kept scoreless 2 games in a row. Had a few near misses v Everton.

    Foster
    Evans Azpi Alonso
    Eriksen Lallana Allan Sanchez
    Aguero Ibra Rondon

    Ake Amat DeRoon Jaku

    1FT

I have no clue what I'm doing. Evans isn't giving me cleans or goals and I feel like Allan needs changing but I can't find a swap that works.
-Also need to diversify my defence now ake's moved

Any suggestions of the best way to get Lukaku in? With 0.6 in the bank the best route I can see is:

Pieters, Snodgrass & Benteke to Yoshida, De Roon & Lukaku, -4.

Team as it stands before transfers:

    Foster
    Alonso, Jones, Chambers
    Sanchez (c), Hazard, Firmino, Chadli
    Kane, Benteke, Carroll

    Subs: Heaton, Snodgrass, Pieters, Amat

Unfortunately I'm short by 0.2 there or that would have been a great shout.

Hazard and Firmino are both likely to go in the next few weeks but I can't sell either with home fixtures against Hull and Swansea this weekend.

Pieters and Snodgrass both and have a bit of a tough run which is why I'm looking at selling these as they are likely to be benched most weeks in the next 4/5.

6 out of my last 7 transfers have all scored a goal directly after I bring them in.

    GW16 Eriksen = 19 points
    GW17 Origi = 2 points
    GW18 Ibra = 15 points
    GW19 Phillips = 13 points
    GW20 Brunt = 8 points
    GW21 Defoe = 6 points

Anybody else have a remarkable run like that and how long did it last?

Think it's 6 out of my last 7 that didn't score, Crouch breaking the dry spell this week though! Who are you bringing in next week?? 😀

Walker but I am happy with my front 7 so not expecting him to score.

Pedro if I could find a space.

I'm buying Phillips and Lukaku, so if they can continue what Crouch started, you'll have some Phillips points as well 😀

Kyle Walker, up against Kolarov, makes sense!

People Captaining Sanchez, please note that he's only scored in 2/10 Home Games (1 vs Chelsea, 2 vs Bournemouth). Much more prolific away from home 🙂

    A) Baines Brunt Monreal (Alonso GW 25)
    B) Baines, Brunt, Rose
    C) Rose, Brunt, Monreal
    D) Brunt Rose Alonso

    Tough decision.

    1) Why didn't David Marshall play? Is Jakupovic the real deal for basement keeper?

    2) Is Brunt worth the .2 over McAuley?Worth it on a free trade if nothing pressing?

Let's me honest on 1). You're not playing him the next four fixtures and Marshall could be back by then if Jaku throws in a howler or two. Good to have an unexpected bonus of two starting keepers though.

    Quick one - good/bad idea ?

Selling Eriksen and Kane for -4 for just one fixture (next, v Man City), to be able to get in Coutinho (v Swansea - might even captain him) and Lukaku (v a terrible Palace).

Fully aware that Spurs could easily score a hat-full against City but just feel the need to be involved somehow against Swasea and Palace defenses and City will probably be a tough fixture...!

I'd get Eriksen back for his next, away at Sunderland (ditching Coutinho) and make a call on either keeping Lukaku (away to Stoke) or get Kane back for Sunderland...

    Mad plan/ good plan?

*Big Sanchez sized hole in my team - any advice on how I could get him in would be deadly!!

    Heaton
    Jones, Alonso, Baines
    Hazard, Eriksen, Puncheon, Stanislas
    Ibra, Kane, Rondon

    Foster, Livermore, Evans, Amat

      Yes.

Lukaku against Palace - that's as good as it gets right now.
      Hazard, nice fixture

      Worth it I'd say
