New Swansea City head coach Paul Clement’s first signing saw Dutch international Luciano Narsingh arrive from PSV Eindhoven for an undisclosed fee, believed to be £4 million.

The 26-year-old put paper on a two-and-a-half year deal at the Liberty Stadium, with the winger’s debut stalled by a slight calf injury.

Speaking about Narsingh, Swans boss Clement revealed he hopes the pacey wide man will be able to provide a threat in behind opposition defences, and on the counter-attack, something he believes was lacking in the squad:

“I don’t think I’m the first person who has noticed that (we don’t threaten in behind teams much)… We want to have a variation of ways to attack teams whether that be through the middle, into the spaces or down the sides and to have that counter-attacking potential. That’s important in modern-day football.”

The History

Born in Amsterdam, Holland, Narsingh spent his youth career at Zeeburgia, AZ Alkmaar and Ajax before linking up with Heerenveen at the age of 16.

He made his professional debut against Vitesse Arnhem in the Eredivisie in October 2008, but had to wait until the 2010/11 campaign to make a real breakthrough.

Narsingh made 24 league appearances during that season, registering an impressive five goals and nine assists.

The pacey attacker then took his game to another level the following season, totalling eight goals and 22 assists in 34 league matches, which persuaded PSV to pay around $4.1 million to secure his services in the summer of 2012.

Narsingh settled in well at his new club, registering six goals and five assists in his first 18 league appearances, before his season ended following a serious knee injury.

During the 2014/15 campaign, Narsingh got his career back on track, scoring six goals and adding 10 assists in 32 league outings as he helped PSV capture a first league title in seven years.

He enjoyed another decent campaign in 2015/16, totalling eight goals and six assists in 30 league matches, although he’s struggled during the first half of this season, managing only one goal and one assist in 15 league appearances.

Narsingh represented Holland at U17, U18, U19, U20 and U21 levels, scoring four goals in 33 appearances, before making his senior debut against Slovakia in May 2012.

He’s represented his country 19 times, scoring four goals, including one in the 2-1 victory over England at Wembley in March 2016.

The Prospects

Given the lack of production from Swansea’s wingers this season, with Wayne Routledge, Jefferson Montero, Modou Barrow and Nathan Dyer mustering just two goals and five assists between them, there’s every expectation Narsingh will come straight into the side once fully fit.

The Dutchman is capable of playing on either flank, although he’s predominantly played on the right wing.

Clement opted for a 4-2-3-1 against Arsenal last weekend, while for testing away matches, he could turn to a slightly more defensive 4-3-3. He deployed such a system at Anfield on Saturday, with Gylfi Sigrudsson and Wayne Routledg flanking Fernando Llorente.

Narsingh, whose qualities include his pace, dribbling, crossing and overall technical ability, should be able to flourish in either system.

Despite struggling for form this season, he has still averaged a goal attempt every 33.4 minutes in the Eredivisie for PSV, superior to Dyer (71.3), Barrow (79.6), Routledge (90.5) and Montero (96).

The Dutch international also outshone all of Swansea’s wide men for creativity, managing to create a chance every 38.1 minutes, better than Montero (38.4), Barrow (56.9), Routledge (59) and Dyer (71.3).

However, it should be noted that PSV are currently sitting third in the Eredivisie, and are subsequently going to boast more of an attacking threat than Swansea in the Premier League.

Nonetheless, the numbers offer hope that Narsingh could provide an upgrade on the options previously at Clement’s disposal.

Narsingh has been priced at 5.5 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) and with the Welsh club looking to build on their shock 3-2 victory at Anfield on Sarturday, his return to contention could coincide with a turnaournd in Swans’ fortunes.

Clement’s men have some testing fixtures ahead but do meet favourable opposition in their next four home matches.

Southampton are next at the Liberty Stadium and could potentially be without new skipper Virgil van Dijk due to an ankle injury sustained in Sunday’s victory over Leicester City.

Following that, the Swans take on Leicester City, Burnley and Middlesbrough over their next three South Wales meetings.

With fellow new signings Martin Olsson and Tom Carroll earning debuts in the Anfield win, there is now new impetus at the club which could help build momentum.

So far this term, it has been Sigurdsson, Leroy Fer and Llorente who won favour in our squads.

Llorente is certainly picking up pace as a potential target following Saturday’s brace on Merseyside. With seven goals and two assists in his last ten appearances, the Spanish striker could prove a viable third striker option.

The Liverpool win has also revived Sigurdsson’s stock.

His first goal since Gameweek 15 arrives ahead of those aforementioned home fixtures and the Icelander still boasts a statistic that shows he’s scored or assisted 48% of the Swans’ goals.

Narsingh could yet provide us with a cheaper attacking alternative.

However, having failed to live up to the potential he displayed as a youngster, there remain question marks over whether he has what it takes to make an impact in the Premier League, with the physicality of the league one area of concern.

It’s a case of wait and see with Narsingh, then, who may yet rival Sigurdsson as a midfield option as the Swansea schedule eases considerably from Gameweek 27.

That's not the point. Why would you sell a striker with Watford at home next with 4 goals and 2 assists in last 5? Is it just because he blanked last game? You should get Kane but not for Giroud. I have both

Ah ok, yeah I would probably do that. I like KDB as a Hazard place keeper for next 3. Other options I looked at didn't seem as interesting since I have no other MC players. If you are just downgrading a second keeper to do it, sounds good to me. Waiting obviously has its advantages from a risk standpoint, but seems like a low risk/high reward in this instance.

    Heaton (Robo)

    Alonso, Rose, Brunt

    FFS Myths?

'Cover' - I get the concept, but in reality you are just getting the individual players that are good prospects. In the Spurs team there are 3 players that you can get for 'cover', but you can't get the likes of Dier and hope that he keeps up with Alli's hauls.

"He's got something to prove, so good chance of a haul" - I can't remember a time when a player has hauled because they apparently have something to prove for whatever reason. Even if they do have something to prove, how do we know that they are trying to prove something?

    "Due" = $£"&" off.

Any others? Disagree with the above?

Though cover does work more when talking about defence.

I think it depends on the team. Surely if you can't afford a Coutinho in a team like Liverpool, then a Lallana offers cover because of the fact the goals are so shared out. In a team like a United where it is Ibra who scores the majority, then yes, you're right.

Cover is a useful concept if you can find the best value, eg Alonso was the best value Chelsea asset at 5.9m. Rose was great value Spurs cover at his starting price.

I don't think anyone means they're considering Dier when they talk about getting attacking cover for Spurs. Like you say, it's between three players realistically - but that's cover, isn't it? I don't know why the term gets such bad press on here. Ruth did a nice community article on this if anyone hasn't seen it: http://www.fantasyfootballscout.co.uk/2017/01/12/buying-the-team-not-the-player/

Probably just me being pedantic. Just like when the term "essential" is thrown about. No player is essential, but I get what most people mean when they say it. I just can't help but take things by their literal meaning. It's a personality flaw admittedly.

I recall one instance of the "something to prove" which might be its own special category: player playing his old team.

Remember a guy named Bony? Did nothing before or after that Swansea match but he did have something to prove (arguably).

Not really a myth, but a method that has disappeared this season that was always talked about to the nth degree is defensive rotations. Used to be endless posts about "which team rotates best with x team?" - is never asked now. Weird.

      1. diesel001
        • 9 Years
        9 years, 2 months ago

I still look at rotation, especially for cheap defenders - don't want to be messing around with defence. It has been a bit different this season as more teams seem to have had good clusters of fixtures. e.g. West Brom and Palace are on a good cluster at the moment.

      Yes, agreed.

I largely go for "coverage" over the season to maintain a healthy interest in more games....not just for pts....less coverage is very often the right way to go whilst chucking a few eggs in fewer baskets (as with Spurs right now)

I do wander off that path now and again but generally get a bit dissatisfied when I have fewer "interests" so quickly revert back to coverage.

Always liked the way you play. A combination of trying to get as many points as possible while enjoying the game too.

I do sometimes base my decisions on such factors, like what time they play, what games are on TV etc. But it's usually when there is nothing else to split them.

I think/hope at this point we don't really need this as a hot topic - maybe I'm just becoming an old timer and am getting tired of this type of discussion. 😉

'Due' is overused but it has been used correctly a few times.

When Ibrahimovic failed to score for 5 gameweeks, but was still taking more shots than almost anyone, he was said to be 'due' a lot more goals. In the 11 matches after his dry spell, he's never blanked in consecutive matches.

And we'll never forget Kun vs Newcastle... 5 goals after almost nothing for 5 weeks. The people who said he was 'due' were the same people who got 50 points from him that day.

Those are only myths if they are used in the wrong context. Nobody is suggesting Dier as Spurs cover for example. Likewise due does apply when a player looks fantastic statistically but has been unlucky, this is particularly relevant when good fixtures are about to start. Something to prove can sometimes result in a good performance depending on the context.

Disagree with the last one. Everybody bombed firmino this week but I maintained he was an excellent captain choice. His form was irrelevant because he hadn't yet started a game for a month as false 9, with Phil in behind. He did, that scored two, and we all move on looking a bit silly again.

Okay that's probably not actually relevant to being "due" - more a general point about form has to be put into perspective by how a team might be set up for certain games, injuries and suspension permitting etc.

Still, I just wanted to say it...

      coverage
everton defence atm. people trying to work out how hard to go in.

Cheap with risky start @ 4.1m
Cheap, risky start, slight goal threat 4.6m
      Starter, slight goal threat 5.0m
      Starter, goal threat 5.6m
Starter, set piece assists, pens 5.6m

The 5.6m options can make the mistake that costs the 4.1m option his clean sheet pts but at least offer the greater possibility of pt redemption at the other end of the field. That's why they are 1.5m more expensive.

"Cover - I get the concept, but in reality you can't get the likes of Dier and hope that he keeps up with Alli's hauls."

You can't dispel an idea by misrepresenting it (as Schopenhauer observed). No-one in their right mind would get Dier to cover Alli's points.

      "Due = $£*&@ off."

United lead the attacking stats over the last 4 weeks with 61 chances created, 79 goal attempts and 29 shots on target. Despite that they have only scored 6 goals, maybe because they have hit the woodwork 5 times in 4 games.

I have had the feeling watching games that they will put 4 or 5 past someone soon. Those stats indicate where that feeling comes from. And that's why I will captain Zlatan next weekend. 🙂

Picking centre backs based on goal-scoring potential. I saw a post on here the other day saying they were going to buy Funes Mori because "he scored 4 goals last season".

That tactic wouldn't be going so well with the deadliest defender in Europe last season either...

Aytaç Sulu (CB, Darmstadt 98) - 7 goals last season. None so far this.

Anyone think there's really anything to worry about in Lallana's blanks?

Bought at 7.2. Definitely want some Liverpool coverage and would take 2 transfers and a downgrade elsewhere to upgrade.

My gut feeling is points are on their way and 7.2 is good value

I bought at 7.0mm and holding. At 5.5ppm, he out performs Coutinho, Firmino, De Bruyne, and Ozil... and he's also less expensive.

Don't see why people are getting rid. Cheapest route into a Pool side that share goals around for fun. They're missing Mane granted, but they still score two a game on average.

I'd get rid, Liverpool have not been playing well and some really tough fixtures coming up. Also if the beat Southampton tonight which I think they will then he's looking at multiple blanks too.

    Current GW22 Team:

    Heaton
    Smith, Alonso, Rose, McAuley
    Sánchez, Alli, de Roon
    Ibrahimovic, Kane, Giroud

Worthwhile spending some the money raised (and -4 ) to bring in Phillips (mid) for bench fodder and resting de Roon? Phillips will be an extra for GW28

After taking out hazard last night & also plan on getting rid of defoe,
i'll only have one penalty taker in my team which is ibra (have sanchez too but dont think he's 1st choice, giroud would have taken it if he was on).
There must be teams on here with baines, haz, ibra, kane & defoe.
Am i putting myself at a disadvantage by having very few penalty takers.

I've been playing 4-5-1 for most of the season and liking it, but how stunning does a backline of Coleman, Walker, Alonso, Rose and Baines look! Problem is it will surely result in a benching headache. And I can't quite bring myself to break my Chelsea defense double up...

Swansea really need to sign a decent CB. Fabianski is a good GK, Taylor and Naughton will do a decent job at full back. Cork and Carroll will provide energy in midfield. Siggy, Narsingh and Fer have quality in midfield and Llorente is a decent striker. They should go in for Jagielka IMO.

A few games ago I would agree, but not now.

Clement changing to a pressing, lots of km covered game, structured midfield protecting the back 4 and wing backs rather than 2 wingers with the attacking midfielders expected to make width. Makalele there to get the defensive midfield duties correct, Olssen looks much better than Taylor and Fernandez and Mawson partnership looked very solid away to Liverpool. All of that says Clement may not now go for another CB.

Hazard, Lallana and Holebas -> Alli, Mirallas, Rose/Walker/Baines/Coleman(which?!) for -4?

    Team currently is
