Three Differentials To Help You Climb the Rankings

Want to claw your way back to the summit of your Fantasy Football mini-league?

With just 16 Gameweeks left, now is the time to gain back some points against your friends. Here, I  will be arguing the cases of three cheap differential options to recruit over the forthcoming weeks in an attempt to get you back on track.

Each player in this article has a Fantasy Premier League ownership of under 5%. I’ve also listed one option for each outfield position.

Defender – Patrick van Aanholt

Price: 5.0

Ownership 4.1%

Team: Crystal Palace

Next five fixtures: bou, SUN, stop, MID, wba

Wing backs are always good players to have, especially when they bomb forward and create as many chances as van Aanholt has this season. The Dutch international has already netted three times and claimed an assist this term and could be in with a shout of surpassing last season’s tally of six goals and four assists.

After switching from Sunderland to Crystal Palace this week, van Aanholt arguably has a better chance of keeping clean sheets during the rest of the season. Although Palace’s system hasn’t quite worked yet under Sam Allardyce, history suggests that shut outs are bound to come given that he has been such a defensively-minded manager over the years.

With the next five Palace fixtures looking relatively easy  van Aanholt looks a likely source for points at both ends of the pitch.

Given that he likes to get far up the pitch, he should provide crosses for Christian Benteke, who has a clinical heading ability, therefore making his chances of assists more prosperous.

Midfielder – Marko Arnoutovic

Price: 7.1

Ownership 0.8%

Team: Stoke

Next Five Fixtures: EVE, wha, CPL, tot, MID

An excellent 2015/16 campaign has so far not been replicated this time out.

But with 11 goal and six assists last season he clearly has strong potential.

In Gameweek 21, away to Sunderland, we were handed a timely reminder of his potential, when he brought in a 15 point FPL haul on the back of a brace and maximum bonus returns.

The Potters’ next five fixtures are mixed in terms of difficulty, however Stoke do have three home encounters in their next five. Although their next match, against an Everton defence with a tight back-line, looks daunting, Arnautovic did produce a double figure haul against them last season.

Stoke have been on good form recently, racking up eight goals in their last four games, including two against a Chelsea back-line that had only conceded twice in the fourteen games prior to that encounter.

If the goals keep flooding in then the Austrian looks a good bet to be involved in them. In addition, with Saido Berahino joining the Stoke frontline Arnautovic’s assist potential also increases.

Forward  – Andy Carroll

Price: 6.3

Ownership 4%

Team: West Ham

Next Five Fixtures: MCI, sot, WBA, wat, CHE

Despite a slight injury concern earlier this week the big Geordie looks to be the fittest he’s been in years. If he can stay off the treatment table he represents a strong long term differential option.

Fixtures are on his side, with five of the Hammers next eight games looking easy, including a trip to Watford and hosting West Brom.  Gameweek 28’s trip to Bournemouth is also in his favour, as the London side are one of only a handful of teams currently guaranteed a match then due to FA Cup commitments.

He also has strong form, with three goals in two games, including an impressive bicycle kick. It is also worth noting that with Robert Snodgrass joining Slaven Bilic’s troops Carroll has an exemplary crosser to help him add to the five he’s scored this season.

Despite 2015/16 being hampered by injury he still managed to score nine goals during that campaign. Dimitri Payet helped with his attacking potential last season but on recent evidence West Ham won’t miss him. Since the Frenchman went on strike, ahead of his departure this week to Marseilles,  the London side have tucked away six goals.

Given this perfect storm of form, fixtures and a guaranteed GWK 28 game it is surprising to see him in so few teams.

Thanks for this. Carrol is pencilled in as my GWK 24 move. Need to see a bit more of Palace before going for PVa.

Carroll's GWK 28 fixture - if he can avoid breaking his legs- looks key.

Oh boy, we're copying each other's moves I think. I'm eyeing up Giroud & Defoe ➡ Lukaku & Carroll next week for a hit.

Giroud and Amat to Carroll and Coleman for me (already have Lukaku).

All being well I may for the first time have a decent defence.

We're making almost the same moves but in a slightly different order, I'm bringing in Coleman today and Lukaku next week.

Basically comes down to Pieters & Lukaku or Coleman & Defoe this week (Pieters isn't being transferred out, he'll just be playing by default if I make no defensive transfer). It's actually a very tight call when I lay it out like that. Hmm... 😕

going Giroud & Cedric to Lukaku & Coleman.
Already have Carroll since he came back but probably benching against Man City as was so poor against them in the Cup game.

Carroll in GW25 for me, I'll still have an Everton slot to fill for GW24. Then looking to save FT GW26, Siggy in GW27, and then 2 FT for GW28 (possibly Bournemouth player and another West Ham player as both have ok fixtures in the couple of weeks after GW28)

      Defoe > Carroll looks good
Planning on getting Coleman tonight and saving other FT, but PVA is tempting insead given I have Baines already.

Biggest differential in the next few weeks is going to be 7% owned Kevin De Bruyne, remember who said it.

West Ham, Swansea, Bournemouth and Sunderland then potential double doubles to come.

Silva's not really produced returns this year, KDB still has 11 assists and 20 bps.

he is getting two blanks, so if you have him already in your squad he can be a good asset. considering the blanks, Siggy is far better option.

Don't agree at all, during the first blank Siggy is away to Chelsea, might as well take a player with the blank.

Siggy is one for the 28 blank, he's an awful pick before with 2 very difficult fixtures either side of OK ones, agree around 28 though.

Chelsea argument is valid, but still better off than benching 10,5m on top of Sanchez & Ibra.

Buying Carroll in to cover blanks now is like buying an ice cream in the peak of summer and wanting to walk it home first on a 5 minute journey before sitting down to eat it.

You know it will melt all over your hands before you walk in the door and be uneatable.

This is a perfect analogy. Getting Carroll in for one easy fixture 4 weeks from now?? Foolish.

        Have a +1.

It'd actually be getting him in as the best striker under 7m currently...with some great fixtures over that period....but yep, I'm fully expecting disappointment in hoping he can stay fit for a month. 🙂

Oh I hear you Jonty. I always try to pick players with my head rather than my heart. When the Martians invade us I will consider taking their striker if his stats are good despite the threat to the human race (go ahead and replace that sentence with a Liverpool Midfielder). YET I cannot remove the shame & rage of my Triple C on Carroll in GW37 last year. I have to work hard to clear that memory before I can ever get the big Georgie back. I will get Diego Costa in 2 weeks despite loathing him, but Andy is a bridge too far right now. Cheers. Good luck!

              You too 🙂

I'm lucky as my only memory of owning Carroll has been good - back when he was a 5m striker putting teams to the sword each week at Newcastle.

His goals per minute ratio is poor, and I was actually seriously considering selling him this week (have 4.8M ITB) for Lukaku for free, but the FA Cup draw yesterday influenced me to hold him as he does have form on his side and in a few weeks will play both 26+28. This allows me to take care of problem areas in my side such as Giroud, P. Jones, and to a lesser extent Ibrahimovic, Sanchez, Yoshida and Amat before GW26 rather than spending a transfer on Carroll. I frankly don't expect a big return from him in the next 6 weeks, I would be ecstatic with 2 goals, and all 6 appearances...

On WC, need suggestions! Planning to play 442
    £3.1 ITB

    Heaton, Jakupovic
    Alonso, Rose, Coleman, Brunt, Holegate
    Sanchez, Eriksen, Alli, Philips, T.Carroll
    Ibra, Lukaku, Barnes

Arnie let me down badly a while back. In fairness he was a bit unlucky not to get more points when I had him and the sending off was a joke.

PVA is one to monitor as Palace will sort it out eventually.

I have bad experience of Carroll both this and last season - he is one I'll probably only touch in a DGW.
