The Stock Check – Gameweek 23 – Wednesday

Gabriel Jesus puts West Ham to the sword in his first top-flight start as Sergio Aguero drops to the City bench. Seamus Coleman provides a third successive attacking return, while Phil Jones limps out of United’s goalless draw with an Eldin Jakupovic-inspired Hull.

On the Rise

Gabriel Jesus
Before we lavish praise on the City attacker, let’s remember that any potential investment comes with a major caveat.

Not only are they without a fixture in Gameweek 26, Pep Guardiola’s side will also skip Gameweek 28 if they make it through to the FA Cup quarter-finals.

While that is reason enough to diminish major investment, Jesus’ sparkling first-half display against West Ham still appears ominous for upcoming opponents Swansea City and Bournemouth.

Handed a first league start, the new boy could prove to be the missing piece of Pep’s jigsaw, with his industry and movement adding an extra thrust to their attacks.

Available as a 9.0 forward, a goal and assist announced the young Brazilian to FPL managers in style, yet his acquisition would be a very short-term move, given that schedule.

The same can be said for a trio of City midfielders, who will surely move onto our shopping lists when the double Gameweeks arrive.

After going 15 league appearances without a goal, the 10.5-priced Kevin De Bruyne netted for the second successive Gameweek to suggest he may be worth the premium outlay if City can maintain their momentum.

At 7.7 and 7.5 in FPL, Raheem Sterling and Leroy Sane offer more budget friendly options.

Sterling’s pair of assists means he’s stepped up considerably in terms of consistency, producing points in six of the last eight Gameweeks.

Sane went into last night’s match having scored in three successive matches in all competitions and added an assist to that record as he finally starts to settle at the Etihad.

Peter Crouch
Retaining his role up front for the sixth successive Gameweek, the Stoke frontman continued to bely his budget price tag by bagging the opener at home to Everton.

Priced at just 4.9, Crouch has now scored in four of the last five Gameweeks and also supplied a pair of assists over that period.

With West Brom, Crystal Palace and Middlesbrough to come in the next four Gameweeks, the short-term fixtures afford Crouch the platform to go on delivering, though it’s worth noting that Stoke would face a blank Gameweek 28 if their opponents Manchester City make the FA Cup quarter-finals.

Seamus Coleman
After a review of the Everton opener, the Irishman’s effort was recorded as an assist, with Ryan Shawcross credited with an own goal.

Nonetheless, the bottom line is that Coleman has now registered attacking returns in three successive Gameweeks, with a goal and assist also accrued over that period.

As one of only six teams currently set to feature in both Gameweek 26 and 28, Everton’s key assets are subject to heavy interest right now – indeed, Coleman was second only to Dele Alli for acquisitions ahead of Tuesday’s deadline.

With four plum home fixtures (BOU, SUN, WBA, HUL) and a trip to Middlesbrough in the next six, his bandwagon looks set to run and run.

Eldin Jakupovic
A defiant display between the posts frustrated the 22.9% who captained Zlatan Ibrahimovic and continued Hull’s improved displays under Marco Silva.

The most benched player in the Gameweek by some distance, Jakupovic was named as a sub by 833,662 FPL managers, yet racked up 11 points at Old Trafford, courtesy of a clean sheet, six saves and maximum bonus.

Priced at just 4.0, he’s another to benefit from fixtures in Gameweek 26 and 28 and has now delivered 16 points in three outings since the new manager was installed.

In Decline

Sergio Aguero
The Argentine’s season goes from bad to worse, with Pep Guardiola dropping him to the bench for the trip to West Ham.

With Gabriel Jesus more than vindicating his manager’s decision, Aguero was afforded no more than a second-half cameo against the Hammers.

Having gone into the deadline sitting in almost 20% of FPL squads, Aguero was the fourth most-captained player for Gameweek 23.

With those blanks on the horizon, last night’s teamsheet makes it a very easy decision for his remaining owners to look elsewhere, as that “essential” tag looks to have come to an end.

Claudio Bravo
A first clean sheet in five league fixtures coincided with Guardiola’s decision to replace the Chilean with Willy Caballero between the posts.

Bravo had started every league match since making his debut in Gameweek 4, yet after conceding six goals in the previous pair of fixtures, Pep finally decided to take the much-maligned summer signing out of the firing line.

City’s frailties in defence have mainly kept them off our radars this season, yet Caballero’s installation may boost their points potential at the back, with John Stones – now down to 4.7 – still owned by 14.7% of FPL managers.

Phil Jones
As the cheapest reliable starter the Manchester United’s defence, the former Blackburn man had been steadily increasing in ownership in recent weeks.

After limping off on 54 minutes at home to Hull, Jones was denied his clean sheet and served up just a single point at Old Trafford.

With a blank Gameweek 26 and likely blank in Gameweek 28, we can expect significant sales as doubts hover over his availability for the weekend trip to Leicester City.

a hugely annoying part of these blanks is not all the teams/players missing out but the impact it has on transfers in the meantime.
aside from finding it very difficult to have a fun punt on someone like jesus or yaya right nowit's the opposite which is annoying me most, feeling obliged to keep players you'd otherwise look to ship. foster and chadli for example have been stinking up my side but simply because they play in gw28 it's like wasting 2 transfers.

i really feel like these 4 or 5 gameweeks are like a black-hole in the season, not enjoyable. no blame attached to fpl of course, they work with what they're given from the fixture gods

I'm personally getting more and more tempted on taking a punt on a player with huge potential (i.e. Sterling/Jesus) rather than going for some dull option without blanks.

City have Sunderland in 27 as well. If you can field 11 in 26 I see no problem with that kind of tactic.

28 will be a big meh anyways.

I've already got 3 Everton & 3 WBA for fixtures that cover GW28.
Holding Stanislas purely for blanks even though he doesn't get 90 minutes and form is dodgy. Had A. Carroll for a while. So 8 players.
Seriously considering only adding Siggy and that's partly before his fixtures change in GW29 anyway.
2 Spurs, Ibra, Sanchez & Alonso and only 3 bench spaces and value tied up in all of them. Don't really want to sell and looking to reduce WBA players from GW29 anyway.
Apart from taking an early WC in GW29 don't see any other sensible option apart from going with only 9 players anyway or taking hits which probably negate any advantage gained in GW 28 - assuming only 3 fixtures go ahead.

Agreed but don't let it stop you transferring Chadli out.

But by shipping Chadli out now you can get a player in who will outscore Chadli by more than 1 point in the run in towards GW28.... Siggy is a great option with GW28 too...

West Brom have great fixtures ahead as well as not missing any GW's.

Not sure why you would want to lose either of Foster/Chadli. Not much points return lately but i think that should change in the coming weeks.

The game is the game, one part of the appeal of fpl is the variable scenarios that crop up over the season. We're all in the same boat, just stop moaning, suck it up and navigate as best you can. Enjoy!

I'm thinking it's worth a punt on Zaha for four games instead of Stanislas (poor fixtures until 28), Siggy (Chelsea and City away), Snodgrass (benched and fixtures not ideal), whereas Palace are second over the next four on the ticker.

Then if I need to switch to one of the above or Antonio for GW28 (going in with 9 rather than 8 players).

Thoughts? 4 gameweeks is a long time and any of the above could get injured/dropped bar Siggy.

Does anyone know how locked Funes Mori is? I'm looking to bring him in now to cover week 28 (just go with me on this one), but I don't want to bring him in and not have a regular starter there.

How likely is it that Jagielka starts taking his time?

Bought Jesus for Giroud to be my cap against Swa. They havent kept clean sheet since Sunderland gw 17.
Watched Jesus play yesterday. Great perfomance. He is young, fast, skilled and hungy for success. Not like Zlatan or Aguero. For next 3 matches looks perfect. 11 points every match highly possible.
He will start for sure. Aguero showed nothing. He is now the dearest sub player in EPL.

Football is about form and finding the best players that will fullfill the tactics and playing for the team. Jesus worked hard in defence, wasnt playing selfish and now got a confidence boost.
Have you seen Aguero face when Jesus scored?
Kun already know that he will be playing in fa cup.
When you loosing, you are rotating and seeking for the best squad(formula).
When you win 4:0, you rather stick to it 🙂
Kun reached everything in EPL. Jesus is young and hungry. He has the spark and will improve having quality players like De bruyne or Silva.
He probably wont be hooked. Sterling was subbed, not Jesus. Guardiola bought the player, he wanted him and now when he shows great promise he will play him.
Sane KDB and Silva will play too as they were really good last night. Sane is Pep's player as well.
And my balls are fine. OR: 55k so can take a gamble and make Ibra (vc) leaving Alli and Eriksen and Sanchez behind in capt race.

At 12.8 you need a player to be nailed on, involved in 50% of their side's goals, to deliver explosive returns every few gameweeks and consistent returns of at least a goal or assist most weeks.

That doesn't currently describe Aguero sadly.

Those in that bracket have included Ronaldo and RVP....sadly Aguero is currently a 8-9m striker...which is only great if he comes in at that price next season. Otherwise he'll just be an over priced irrelevance (see Wayne Rooney and Daniel Sturridge in recent years)

Sad really, but think it might be a necessary sacrifice to lift City to the next level. Player power and slack off-field attitudes have held City back from reaching the top europen level they are targeting, and Aguero is one of the problems.
For Pep, it's a case of taking one step back to be able to take two step forward in terms of performances the seasons ahead, and form a much more proffessional and winning culture. Hopefully with a rejuvinated Aguero on board, but not sure if he's got the needed mentality.

          Aguero is City's Sturridge...

Klopp said Sturridge's clinic goal threat brings tears to his eyes...but when he doesn't fit the style he's bench fodder

Same with Aguero...City looked ten times better without him

That doesn't mean he's not good, it just means Jesus made it possible to play Guardiola's style

Ford God sake, he had a slight injury, so why would Pep risk with him when those 3 youngsters are in form?

Pep also said they can't complete their aims without Kun's contribution, so that's another sign Kun will still be the main man. Guys, don't be silly, we talk about one of top 3 best strikers in the world.

Anyway, I won't have any City player as Kun is too expensive and others are rotation risk because we are still in 3 competitions.

Is nobody considering that, for a Pep team, Jesus might just be a better striker?

When Kun got hauls early in the season, they were driven by penalties, which he is no longer taking. He has never been and will never be the Suarez-style uberpresser that a Pep team really needs.

City are playing with 5 forwards, which only works if you can sustain a relentless pace. Aguero is possibly the best finisher in the league, but that doesn't make him the best pick for the team. In a bizarre way, he's like Giroud at Arsenal.

Have a feeling that Tekkers and the rest of the Palace squad will push on after their win at Bournemouth. So I'm doing:

        2 FT
        Giroud > Benteke
        Jones > Dann

As Big Sam appears to be having the desired effect on their organization at the back. Leaves me with this:

        Heaton/Foster
Cedric Dann Alonso McAuley Funes Mori

Bit of a long one but feedback is really appreciated.

What do you think of this as a rough...ROUGH! Blank plan??

      Before GW25
      Friend -> Maguire
Pieters -> Funes Mori / Bryom
(For free. Pretty safe trades as i rarely play these two and both new players are likely to play both blanks)

      Before GW26 (-4)
Sanchez -> Sigurdsson (Bough Sanchez for 11.8 so might get him cheaper once he drops)
      Defoe -> Lukaku

      GW27 Save

Before GW28 ill have around 4.0 in the bank to make 1-2 moves or save to give a team like this GW28

      Jakupovic
McAuley / Maguire / Baines / Funes Mori
      Sigurdsson / T.Carrol / Phillips
      Lukaku

      Heaton / Alonso / Eriksen / Lallana / Kane / Ibra

I will have around 4.0itb and 2ft to get Sanchez in easily and strong bench to bring back in!

      Thoughts?

Brunt subs in for Dawson spot, when Dawson covers for Evans.
Evans back in, and Brunt should be more advanced
