Captains

Captain Poll – Gameweek 25

Pinpointing the Premier League’s latest whipping boys proved key to captaincy success in Gameweek 24, with Romelu Lukaku (9.7) scoring four in Everton’s 6-3 rout of Bournemouth at Goodison Park.

That scoreline means that the Cherries have shipped 16 goals in their last five matches and should ensure that players from their next opponents, Manchester City, fare well in this week Captain poll.

Given his brace against Swansea at the weekend – bringing his tally to three goals in just two Premier League starts – City starlet Gabriel Jesus (9.2) is likely to be a frontrunner ahead of Monday’s Vitality Stadium clash.

In terms of frequency of goal attempts in the box, he is now faster than team-mate Sergio Aguero (12.8), who found himself on the bench for a second successive match against the Swans.

While the Samba star has gathered more than 88,000 new FPL managers since Saturday, 38,000 have jettisoned the Argentine.

City midfielders Kevin De Bruyne (10.6) and Raheem Sterling (7.8) could also benefit from Aguero’s plummeting stock. The Belgian schemer now has two goals and an assist in his last three, while the England winger has been the master of creative consistency, recording eight assists in his last nine.

Leicester City’s fragile backline is another worth targeting when considering where to place the armband. Manchester United’s comfortable 3-0 win over the Foxes at the King Power Stadium on Sunday means that Claudio Ranieri’s defence have conceded 10 over their last four

Next up for the Italian’s hapless rearguard is a trip to Swansea City, which promotes the Welsh side’s set piece specialist Gylfi Sigurdsson (7.4) as a strong differential captaincy option. The 8.2% owned Icelander now has three goals and a pair of assists under new manager Paul Clement, as well as three double-digit hauls at the Liberty Stadium.

Another alternative armband candidate is Sunderland’s Jermain Defoe (7.8), who scored a brace away to Crystal Palace at the weekend. The 27.8% owned veteran next faces a home tie against a Southampton side that has shipped 11 goals in their last six matches, with just one shutout earned over that spell.

Following their successful day out at Leicester, Manchester United once again face a favourable defence, when Watford drop by Old Trafford on Saturday.

The Hornets have just two clean sheets and have conceded 22 times on the on the road, which presents Zlatan Ibrahimovic (11.6) with a golden opportunity to top this week’s poll. The Swede’s strike against the Foxes was his 15th of the season, and he has been the FPL most popular captain pick for seven successive Gameweeks.

Alternative United assets include Henrikh Mkhitaryan (8.8), who racked up a 14 point return on Sunday, his biggest of the campaign, thanks to a goal, assist and maximum bonus returns.

Before Marco Silva took charge of Hull City, their trip to Arsenal this weekend would have cemented Alexis Sanchez (11.8)’s captaincy credentials. But in his four league matches in charge, the Portuguese has seemingly transformed the Tigers.

Over that period, Silva’s side have defeated Liverpool and Bournemouth, kept Manchester United at bay in a 0-0 draw at Old Trafford and proved a stubborn opponent to Chelsea at Stamford Bridge, where they eventually lost 2-0.

Although the 35.8% owned Sanchez, who has 10 attacking returns in his last 12, is likely to be a popular selection, the considerable improvement from his Gameweek opponents could see him miss out on top spot.

Last week’s captaincy poster boy Lukaku could suffer the same fate: he is unlikely to find the Middlesbrough defence as obliging as the Cherries when Everton visit the Riverside Stadium next weekend. Aitor Karanka’s troops have conceded 14 goals in 12 home matches, earning four clean sheets.

The Captain Poll is now live in the middle column on your homepage on desktop, or via the slide-in menu on mobile and tablet under recent comments.

We will be back to check in on progress in the poll later ahead of this week’s deadline when we deliver our “Captain Sensible” article offering an analysis of the results and the statistics behind the leading contenders.

Gameweek 24 Rough with the Smooth

Let's hear your tales of woe and joy.

Sure to be plenty about regarding the Everton and Man City games especially.

Remember its what you did do not what you didn't. - eg - "I captained Kane but was going to captain Lukaku" is simply you captained Kane.

Captained Aguero; privately chuckling at others' Lukaku hopes who I didn't own...

Giroud to Lukaku and captained him (like many I guess). And then a -4 point hit for Amat to Funes Mori (as I had an injured Daniels and Evans as well). A nice late assist got me the 4 points back and a much better defender in place than old mate Amat.

The rough, trading out Valencia (but probably a good longer term move to bring in Goalman).

The smooth, being possibly the only non-casual Alderweireld owner in the game.

I know its what you did do not what you didn't do.. but have to mention that I was in a remote cottage in Wales and couldn't pull the trigger on Costa -> Lukaku (c) like I wanted to do when I woke up saturday morning. 31 points lost... ouch.

This made for the roughest week in FPL memory really.

Roughs: Eriksen (c) was a huge fail, underestimated Boro. Brought in Holgate for Amat at the start of the week (who didn't start).

Smooth: At least Costa got two assists and Ibra scored!

44 points and a 70k rank drop from 150k to 220k. Have mercy!

Held on to mkihitaryan for 7 weeks before dropping him for mane this week.

Dropped 200k, dropped out of the LMS League, have now lost the respect of my Japanese wife and her family, brought dishonour to the family, already a disappointment to mine.

Front 3 of lukaku, jesus and kane. Guess which I captained..?..
Yes kane. 46 points from these 3 but the rest of my team only got 24 between them. 70 points still only a small green arrow though.

Rough— I chose van Aanholt as my Rose replacement, and I then played van Aanholt instead of McAuley.

Meanwhile, both my Mini League rivals had Defoe and Lukaku (I had neither), my Mini League lead evaporated, I dropped 157,000 places, and it was my fourth red arrow in the last five Gameweeks.

Smooth— Alonso scoring, Kane making it seven successful captaincies in a row.

Thank you for the clarification 😛

          Smooth; I made three transfers this week, for a -4;

          Rose (0) > Holgate (1)
          Koscielny (1) > Brunt (9)
          Wilson (0) > Lukaku (21)

26 points to the good (unfortunately no Lukaku captain) and set up nicely for the blanks.

Rough; My midfield did the grand total of nothing - Antonio (2), Phillips (2), Alli (3), Sanchez (2)

Smooth - Aside from captaining Lukaku and getting goals from Sigurdsson and Alonso I was most pleased with breaking even on ditching Giroud and Amat for Carroll and Coleman for a hit. Team looks much better now and finally I can actually field three defenders.

                Playing my own game.

I went a bit hit happy for a month.

Once I stopped doing that and started taking only strategic hits, captaining Sanchez and making late reasoned transfers I got more greens than reds.

Should have done that from the start but been an interesting learning experience.

Well... let me tell you a story. It was a cold winter's eve. Arsenal were somehow 2-0 down to a mediocre Watford team at half-time. Wenger sprang into action- off comes giroud (having reverted back to Equus africanus asinus (donkey) status)) on comes Walcott. I reciprocated in kind. Scouring the striker options it became clear there was only one man who could step up and be the saviour of my team (ironically in this case it wasn't Jesus) Alas! I was a just short of funds to make the move. On the night when everyone else was moving to aquire their own jesus, I had to purge my XI of mine. Out went Joe Allen and Giroud. In came Tom Carroll (very reasonably priced at 4.2 and has a game in gw28) and big Romelu Lukaku...
Some time later I was scouring my team for captaincy options. Could I do the unthinkable? Would I get trolled again? I decided to take the plunge and affixed the armband to the burly Belgian's bulging bicep. One last decision to make...Who to bench? Surely I couldn't augur benching the top scoring player in the game for a hot-headed, occasionally brilliant, Watford full-back? With my 'chelsea-tinted glasses' on, I made a decision that most would have baulked at- Holebas got the nod, a sulking Sanchez confined to the timber. With a pat on the shoulder I sent him and my charges out the door with the instruction to do me proud. And boy did they. Lukaku x 2 Alonso, Brunt, Walker, Holbas, the undroppable Eden Hazard, Zlatan and Jermaine Defoe. I told my girlfriend to put her best dress on- we're going out for a steak dinner tonight love! 104 points. Knock me down with a feather.

Tl;DR I brought in Lukaku for a (necessary) hit and captained him. I also benched Sanchez for Holbas, and had the bacon brought home by Alonso, Walker, Brunt, Hazard, Zlatan and Defoe.

Great stuff. I, like many was kicking myself sat night but thought ibra was more secure to get points. If I thought who had the higher ceiling for points would prob have gone lukaku, but never thought he'd do that well.

Triple digit points in part thanks to Hazard, whose goal should have counted for 3 🙂 I lost 0.3 of his value in recent weeks and I am now reading with bemusement that he is considered to be in form and on the rise again.. While he has been the same class player all along. Ah the bandwagons.

Smooth - Did Holebas -> Brunt as a long term move which gained me some points in the short term. Got Barnes in for Anichebe last week and played him this week for a nice cheap 8 points. Held on to Hazard all this time despite wanting to move him on for a few weeks now.

Rough - No Lukaku, defining factor for this gameweek really. Kane (C) was one of my lowest scoring players.

Still scored 74, went up 30k places to 63k so i'm pretty happy.

Rough: No Lukaku. Sanchez has single handedly ruined my season. I didn't have him for his hatty. I sold Alli and Kane to buy him, Alli scored a hat-trick of braces and Kane scored a hat-trick. I had to sell him to fund Kaku and got scared because Alexis moved upfront and Lukaku looked lost against Stoke.

Smooth: Lukaku owner, with useful support from Ibra (c), Alonso, McAuley. However the smoothest of all was Stanislas not playing, bringing in Monreal's 6 pointer off my bench 😀 (Anyone worked out yet just HOW Monreal and Giroud picked up bonus in that MATCH??!!)

Smooth: all defender contributing points and clean sheet
Rough: Transferring out Barnes and Lallana for Carroll (SWA) and Lukaku at last minute but after deadline realize these transfers do not got through... T_T

After one of my worst gameweeks ever in GW23 (27pts), I was paralysed with uncertainty about what transfers to make. Wanted Lukaku in but only realistic way of getting him was as part of a -8 hit, and that involved bringing in Jakupovic who seemed pretty unlikely to deliver any points. Was tempted just to leave it and let transfer roll over.

Then, logging in from the west coast of America thousands of miles from home and jetlagged to the eyeballs, I became untethered from reality (quite appropriate, given the political situation here) and decided at the last minute to go for it anyway. Valdes, Rose and Giroud --> Jaku, Coleman and Lukaku (C), and the new arrivals delivered 54pts between them as part of a 90pt gameweek haul.

            God bless jetlag.

            Rough-where do i start?!
            Benched defoe to play baines
            Beched jaku over heaton
            Sold haz for alli (C)

I had cut 120 point lead in ML to 40 in past 9 weeks but after scoring only 43 points gap back upto 100+ as ML leaders had luk (C), kept haz, played defoe, have coleman/FM & scored 3 figure scores for the GW.

Time for me to give up! Awful rank, keep selling players who go on scoring runs & buying blankers! & most weeks making wrong captain choice

Had captaincy on Lukaku for most of the week until I decided (for some reason) to switch to Alli who scored the huge total of 3.

              Smooth:
              Lukaku (c)
Defoe - glad I kept faith
              Lallana to Siggy
              Walker, Alonso, Ibra...
93 points, up from 57k to 20k, 7 green arrows on the spin

              Rough:
              Playing Baines ahead of McAuley.

              Smooth:

              I did Daniels + Rondon ---> Brunt + Lukaku (C) for a hit.

Without making the move I would have captained Alli, so I gained 49 points.
Went from 1 million to around the 650k mark.

Smooth; Lovely transfers of Evans & Pedro > Brunt & Siggy, well up on that deal especially as Jones was injured. Kept the faith with Hazard, Kane(c), Alonso, Toby, Carroll & Ibra all returning for a solid 72 and up to 608k just outside my highest rank of the season.

              Rough; Nothing!

Smooth - Managed to hit 3 figures (103) after scoring only 31 the week before.

Took a 4 point hit to bring in Lukaku (c), Coleman and Carroll (to free up funds) and remove Giroud, Koscielny and Fletcher, which worked a dream.

Also held onto Hazard and Defoe who came in big - no idea why everyone keeps turning their back on Defoe at that price.

Rough - I guess Stanislas being benched and using up a transfer for King this week!

After a dreadful 29 points last gameweek, bounced back and got 106 this week. Two transfers in were Barkley and Jesus. GW rank just over 2000. Could have been 109 if I'd chosen the correct wing back from Everton!

Scout Pick Community Champion Lottery – Gameweek 25

Once again we are on the look out for a champion to represent the community to take on the Scout Picks and win the chance of a prize.

If you want to take part please email your FFS name and FPL ID number to community@fantasyfootballscout.co.uk .

The champion will then be selected at random shortly after the deadline of 11am tomorrow (Tuesday) and then be asked to submit their XI by Friday 12noon by emailing me at jonty@fantasyfootballscout.co.uk

We only need 11 picks and please be mindful of the 84m budget. There’s no captain in the picks either and please stick to a designated FPL formation, including no more than three players from one team. No captain or chips will be applied.

At the end of the season the champion who beats the picks by the highest margin will win a £100 Amazon voucher.

The champion will be revealed in a midweek Scout Squad article on Tuesday, which will outline our initial thinking around the picks. Our and the champions picks will be revealed as usual the day before the first match of the Gameweek.

Should the community “Champion” fail to provide an initial or final Scout Pick selection, then an “Assistant Manager” chosen by us, will gain control of the selection to represent the community for the Gameweek in question.

Thanks mate. Don't know if I trust Antonio for lots of points. Either he explodes or stays quiet for some time. Pedro, Barkley, Siggy in pretty similar price bracket and I trust them more. (at least Pedro and Siggy that is)

He's been unlucky of late; hit the woodwork and goal ruled out for offside. West Ham look to have turned a corner, worth holding I reckon as he's nailed, cheap and no GW28 blank.

Thanks mate. I know he's value for his price. Just 3 goals for WHM last game and no Antonio involvement got me thinking. Didn't watch the game, so don't know what his position was or was he any good. Siggy and Pedro I watched and liked what I saw.

Will stick vs WBA at least and decide later on. Cheers.

              Any tips most welcome!

              Grant (Jaku)
Mustafi - Baines - Brunt (Rose, Chambers)
              Sanchez - Alli - Coutinho - Antonio - Phillips
              Costa - Lukaku (Diomande)

              0 ft
              3.4 itb

              Plan currently something like:
              For week 25: Above team
For week 26: Rose > Cheap defender not blanking week 26/28
              For week 28: Coutinho/Diomande > Siggy/Carroll

Gives 10 playing week 28. About 4m to restructure afterwards. Could also do a cheap mid instead of Siggy to play in week 28, then restructuring to 343 becomes easier afterwards.

Rose price dropping faster though, I've assumed neither will play, and get 6m back from Rose only 5.8 from Mustafi.

Unless there's news that Rose injury isn't too bad, then Mustafi is gone!

I liked his article but I can't vote for MGPT as the same information was posted in a hot topic last season, the Lukaku as a troll myth was debunked already then.

For me Ruth NZ's article was the best as it took on a subject that is widely discussed, but rarely put into succint terms.

My vote goes to Ruth NZ. Great piece with lots of obscure FFS jargon simply worded.
MGPT for timing is close second.

                Sanches, alli, sigurdson, snodgrass, philips
                Ibra, lukaku, defoe

One of them need to be benched and imo snoddy and philips only alternatives

            Lukaku/Ndiaye/Robertson for Wilson/Stanislas/Baines for -4.

I've got Williams and Robles so selling Baines is only to enable me to get Lukaku.

Do i try to get in Lukaku too desperately?

            My team:
            Robles/Pickford
            McAuley/Brunt/Williams/Baines/Holebas
            Sanchez/Eriksen/Phillips/Stanislas/Marney
            Ibra/Kane/Wilson

Stanislas is a keeper, if not money issue i'd keep. He is on pens, free kicks and playing more attacking than Ndiaye. Robertson is nice diferential with juice fix coming(bargain for that price)

Is Fernandez from Swansea nailed now?
Then Wilson/Baines to Lukaku/Fernandez seems tempting.

Heaton, Pickford Alonso, Coleman, Brunt, Rose, Amat Sanchez, Alli, Eriksen, Phillips, Zaha
            Lukaku, Ibrahimovic, Rondon

Looking like I might upgrade Rondon or get Siggy into my midfield.

Not happy with Pickford, Rose, Amat, Zaha and Rondon so any combination of those can go. 0.5m in bank. Any suggestions?

Keep Zaha. Upgrade Rondon to Carroll or Deeney. You can ship Pickford for Jaku but that can wait untill gw28. And defense is OK, you can play Alonso - Brunt - Coleman until Rose gets back.

Can understand Phillips. No blanks, looks nailed and good fixtures. It's more wasting a transfer on him, when you could use it to juggle your front line, to unlock the potential for more pts.

Stanislas dropped though, so needs addressing.

Yesterday's game is why I won't be captaining Ibra anytime soon. United were only for the second time this season 3-0 up (the first was also against Leicester) and had the opportunity to go for it and fix their dismal goal difference. But they much rather prefer playing it dull and safe for 30 minutes.

I can't see United scoring more than 3 regularly (either because they can't or because they don't want to). I can definitely see Arsenal scoring more than 3 on a few occasions.

If you are trying to make a point, then get your facts right. United were already 3-0 up against Bournemouth, Leicester (twice), Wigan, Feyenoord, Reading, Swansea and Sunderland this season.
                  8 times.
Arsenal were 3-0 up against the following opponents this season: Swansea, Watford, Chelsea, Nottingham, Basel, Southampton, West Ham, Ludogorets.
                  8 times.

Have 6 for gw28 atm. Maybe Amat/DeRoon -> Coleman/WHU mid, but who else worth it for 1 game?
Carroll injuries, Maguire/Mawson are still hull/swa defenders. Tempting to use a ft for Ibra -> Kane and bench for one.

Michael Ballache, now there was a player.

6 is bare minimum I would have thought, but a decent foundation. Hold a transfer over and decide closer to 28?

                    Mornin' all.
I'm a bit unsure as to what to do this week.

                    Heaton
                    Alonso - Coleman - Koscielny
                    KdB - Alli - Antonio - Phillips
                    Ibra - Lukaku - Rondon
                    (Pickford - Brunt - Capoue - Aké)
                    0.6 itb, 1FT

Was thinking possibly Alli -> Siggy but would be regretting it next week with Alli(STK) and Siggy(che).. Any thoughts?

Snoddy tempts me with Antonio short term, and I'd like to buy a raffle ticket (Hull player) too before the blanks.
.....All of these options push me towards saving my FT but my TV is already SO woeful (100.9m)

Jermaine Defoe. The greatest swap deal in history (Dozy Altidore going the other way).

Altidore was a FPL great. What was it, 2 goals in 75 games or something?

Toronto FC. Biggest shmucks around for falling for it.

If that transfer was on Fantrax it would have been veto'd by EVERYONE.

Kane and Defoe should be Englands 2 strikers with Sturr and Vardy nowhere near the team.

Fact defoe hasn't been in one squad over last two years is an absolute disgrace and sums up what's wrong with the England set up and FA. How vardy in particular gets ahead of him. Joke. Sturridge shouldn't be near england squad at the moment too.

referee decisions still at the end of the day going to the teams that need it most

Mata: red card all day (that could have changed the game)
Alonso: on closer inspection it appears to be an elbow into bellerins head
Kolorov slips during a swansea breakaway, gets a foul , free is taken nowhere near where it happened, ball was rolling, city score

Ball was there to be won, it just looked worse as bellerin jumped at a weird angle. You have to use your arms to jump but alonso didn't lead with his elbow. I don't think mata's was a sending off either.

Bellerin needs to grow a pair. Look, it's a physical game and if he competes physically he fears he might fracture his lovely hair-do. If Bellerin jumps and competes for the ball it's nowhere near a foul. The Alonso challenge was fair, in fact it was brilliantly committed and sums up why Chelsea are so far ahead of Arsenal

Where should I concentrate on fixing in my team first considering blank GW's I think I will only be able to field 10 players...

                    I have 0.2 ITB and 0FT

                    1) Thinking I need to get Stones out for Funes Mori or Robertson after this GW (for the blank week.) Good idea?
                    2) Is it also worth losing Sanchez for Hazard after this week? - It would give me funds to change Ake out for a starter...

                    Grant

                    Stones/ Coleman / Walker /
                    Sigurdsson / Phillips / Sánchez / Alli
                    Costa / Jesus / Lukaku

                    Bench - Jakupovic / Capoue / Aké / Kingsley
