Top 5 Career Hall of Fame Analysis – Gameweek-24

The key player this week was Romelu Lukaku,  who handed third placed Peter Kouwenberg a 92 haul, after he drafted in and captained the Everton striker, who hit four past a hapless Bournemouth at Goodison on Saturday.

A failure to secure the services of the Belgian proved catastrophic for number one Ville Ronka,  who ended Gameweek 24 with a mere 47 point return. He also dipped down to second place in the rolling Live Hall of Fame, which is updated every week and differs from the career Hall of Fame that is refreshed when the season closes.

Peter was the only Top 5 Career Hall of Famer to captain Lukaku and the move also gave him a season high FPL rank of 7,778, his first visit to the top 10,000 this campaign. It is worth pointing out that Peter, who appears on Fantasy Football Scout as My Pretty Pony was kind enough to tell us his moves and captain choice ahead of the Gameweek 24 deadline in last week’s comments section. Those wise enough to follow his advice were handsomely rewarded.

For Villa Ronke his FPL high rank dropped from 22,068 to 38,742. Without Lukaku in his team and after another poor showing from Palace’s Christian Benteke, the patient Ville used his two free transfers on Saturday night. One can only imagine that Lukaku now occupies one of the front three slots and the Palace striker has been shown the door.

It was also a poor week also for Career HoF number two, Marlen Rattiner, who hit a season low FPL rank of 89,663 that has seen him make three transfers (taking one hit) already this week.

For this article, which examines in detail this elite group of managers latest moves and strategies,  I have also deployed Fusen’s FPL Statistico tool to gain an extra insight into their thinking.

Before we look at their teams in more detail, here’s why they are the best FPL managers:

Lowest rank in the last three seasons for any of the top five4,324
Highest rank in the last three seasons for any of the top five49

CAPTAINCY

capt

For once Arsenal’s Alexi Sanchez was not the most popular captain choice. That honour was given to Tottenham’s Dele Alli, who failed to reward the faith put in him by David Meechan and Steve Poulsom.

Over the season Sanchez has been picked as captain 33% of the time, averaging 13.6pts when chosen. Manchester City’s Sergio Aguero follows in popularity having been handed the armband 28% of the time, averaging 14.5pts as captain, with Tottenham’s Harry Kane chosen 10% of the time and averaging 11pts, the third most popular.

How important is it to get your captain choice right?

Total Captain Points as % of Overall Score = 23% (average for the top 5)

By that measure it is fairly important with nearly a quarter of the Top 5’s points coming from their captain.

Players outGiroud x2, Jones x2, Amat x2, Lallana

Everton players were in demand this week with Lukaku, Leighton Baines and Seamus Coleman all coming in for their home fixture against the Cherries.

Swansea’s upturn under new manager Paul Clement sees Gylfi Sigurdsson transferred in along with Hull’s Andrew Robertson being Ville’s only transfer in Gameweek 24, replacing Swansea’s out-of-favour Jordi Amat in his side.

It is worth noting that all the players brought in this week come from teams who will not suffer blanks in either Gameweeks 26 or 28 as managers plan ahead.

Lukaku’s four goals and three bonus points sees Peter turn the Immediate Points Gained table on its head. Having taken 64pts worth of hits this season, Peter has immediately gained 215pts from those transfers, or 151pts when subtracting the cost of the hits.

Of course the important thing is to make the right transfer – the table would show a completely different picture had Ville, not Peter, brought in Lukaku this week. However, so far this season Ville’s patient approach leaves him someway behind the rest of the career Top 5, who are on average 26pts better off on immediate points gained from transfers.

As noted previously using ‘Total Immediate Points Gained from Transfers’ is not necessarily the best way to measure transfer success, as transfers are often made with a series of fixtures in mind. Nonetheless it provides a starting point as we often hope for an immediate return.

In part due to making the most transfers (38) of any of the career Top 5 Peter has also gained the largest squad value – £106.9. Though I would hardly describe his early season transfers as a “blind and often misguided hits spree”, as he did in a comment a few Gameweeks back, he has certainly improved following an FPL rank of 243,702 in Gameweek 7.

Peter’s now managing to make transfers before the player hauls – an example would be Diego Costa to Zlatan Ibrahimovic in Gameweek 18 – rather than after – such as only bringing in Eriksen in Gameweek 17 after his big returns in GWs 13, 14 and 16.

Patient vs Stubborn

– How long do you hold onto a player who is not scoring well in FPL?

Below is a table of stubbornness. Looking at the outfield players who have played more than 10 Gameweeks and have low average points when they’ve played/started. It’s not surprising that Ville has a few players who’ve scored quite poorly given the patient way he plays the game.

Players whose names are in bold currently feature in their teams.

With Palace unable to build on their encouraging performance against Bournemouth it is my view that Christian Benteke has now left Ville’s team, and it is easy to see why with an average of 3.7pts when playing for his team.

If Lukaku’s haul wasn’t enough for Peter, Manchester United’s Antonio Valencia finally delivered on his potential, with 11pts to reward his stubbornness, or patience if you prefer.

Players in 3 teamsLukaku, Eriksen, Phillips, Stanislas, Coleman, McAuley, Foster, Heaton, Pickford

Spurs’ midfield duo continue to feature prominently with Dele Alli in four teams, closely followed by teammate Christian Eriksen in three.

Sanchez and Ibrahimovic remain the only players to feature in all five teams.

Chelsea’s Marcos Alonso is the most popular defender featuring in four teams, closely followed by Seamus Coleman and West Brom defender Gareth McAuley, who are in three teams each.

Baggies winger Matt Phillips and Bournemouth’s Junior Stanislas also feature in three teams each, predicted by the top five to be the value picks under 6.0 they continue to disappoint, with Stanislas even losing his starting role in the Bournemouth attack last weekend.

FORMATION

Two teams4-4-2 formation
One teams3-5-2 formation
One team3-4-3 formation
One team4-3-3 formation

4-4-2 was the unusual popular choice of FPL formation this week, chosen only 6% of the time this season. However with West Brom, Everton, and Chelsea defenders providing an enticing combination of attacking returns and defensive solidity it is unlikely to be the last time it is used.

Over the course of the season 3-4-3 has been favoured 64% of the time by the career top 5 HoF, with 3-5-2 second with 20%.

The only manager to choose 3-4-3 this week was second placed Marlen, whose expensive front three of Diego Costa, Zlatan Ibrahimovic, and Sergio Aguero, haven’t been value for money of late.

City’s out of favour Argentine, who was also captained by Marlen this week, has been particularly disappointing, having been deployed as a substitute in his last two league matches. As I mentioned last week an explosive return up the rankings is of course possible at any moment with those three but patience with Aguero must be wearing thin. With three transfers already made this week I would imagine Aguero is one of the victims.

POINTS, RANK, VALUE

*from GW6 onwards

Only one of the Top 5 qualified for the cup (#5), they went out in Gameweek 19.

They all still have their wildcards and the only chip that has been played is All Out Attack

The improvement continued for fourth-placed Steve, who now has an FPL rank of 187,875 despite picking Alli as his captain this week – that’s a whopping increase of 658,036 places since Gameweek 17. Taking hits into account he’s amassed 445pts over that period, second only to Peter’s 449pts. He’s only taken one hit over that period compared to Peter’s 24 points worth of hits, proving again that it’s about buying the right players not necessarily the least or the most.

I apologise if it freaks any of them out seeing their moves analysed in this way, but for us lesser mortals I hope it provides insights on how to play the game successfully. Thoughts and comments appreciated.

Thanks for this...just shows how just one player can completely transform a week and possibly a season.

Peter the only one to benefit from Lukaku (c) a case in point.

Interesting that the Top 5, like many of us, have made the wrong calls on GWK 28 fillers like Stanislas. Wonder if they will keep or ditch?

Certainly looks like the Lukakuless and Agueroed have reversed that position after the weekend.

Many thanks Jonty for your wonderful editing skills and for posting the article. Yes an intriguing week - I wonder if Aguero will now punish those who were quick to get rid of him? Should he start against the Cherries that is. Hard to be patient with such an expensive asset though.

Thanks again, TM, I hope I get as many mentions when I have a terrible Gameweek too (in the interests of fairness) 😉 . Elaborating on a few of my 'strategies':

    1. Points hits often mean poor initial choices or planning, so although it is the season of the hit many of my hits stem from my initial failings.

    2. Would be interested to know whether bench points are a big issue. I appreciate there are ways of finding this out (Gargatron or something?) but I've never done it. All I know is that this season I've had several 18 point and 16 point bench weeks!

    3. Looking at my history generally, and not making excuses, my poorest seasons tend to coincide with having other stuff on in the 'real' world (new baby a few years ago, then new profession and this year a new job). Probably more a sign that I need to live in the real world more regularly! My approach definitely seems to vary according to my state of mind.

Thanks again for your efforts. I think the HoF will 'equalise' a little over the next few seasons as good but newer players develop a proper history and us oldies are found out, but for now I'll enjoy the spotlight.

Thanks, Spectrum, likewise. I don't tend to have time to post much whether I'm doing well or badly (I don't come out of the woodwork when it suits!), but as these articles have specifically mentioned me it seemed churlish not say hello. Great community, though, and I always enjoy reading the articles and comments.

You're welcome and thank you for the insights! If you can do as well as you have with a young child and new profession, I mean I take my hat off to you! I find it exhausting enough just looking after my five year old niece every now and again, at least I get to hand her back at the end of the day 🙂

I will look at bench points, it would be interesting to know how much has ended up on the bench, and if it coincided with a generally good or poor week otherwise.

I'm also interested in exploring cognitive biases in decision making for fantasy football, but that might be a summer project!

Definitely the makings of a book, TM. Admittedly a book which only us diehard FFS types will read, but that still a few hundred thousand, eh?

The young child (my second) is now 8, so a different type of exhausting! The career change and job change were/are interesting times too, but we all lead busy lives, I guess.

Look forward to your future findings.

I went through my season to see how well my transfers do for me, and excluding wildcards (which I couldn't be bothered to calculate) once I take hits into account my transfers have gained me a net 8 points across the entire season in the week immediately after I made them.

I tend to plan a few weeks infront, but I didn't expect it to be this bad. I think I will alter my strategy accordingly next season. Although only one of these elite players beat my OR last season...

    Excellent work, thanks.

Looking into this also highlighted that I'm more successful when I take hits to get who I really want, instead of comprimising to stick to the FTs. Three of my four best weeks for transfers involved hits, and one of those was a -12!!

One thing I've found interesting writing these articles is that there really isn't one stratergy that is better than another. I mean in general I see very few punts, there always seem to be a form/fixture/value reason behind a transfer, but that's just common sense. It doesn't seem to matter how many or few transfers you make. I would be interested in a points gained from transfers over a 3 gameweek period for instance, but sometimes players get sold quite quickly because injury so it might be difficult to tell... i will keep exploring! thanks for the comment.

This is Steve Poulsom checking in! It's very nice to see my name on a website. It's my five minutes of fame! Not having a great season and won't be top 5 by the end of it I suspect.

I've brought Siggy in for Pogba this week, planning for the blanks.

      Great history, Steve.

I'm not sure how the ranking works (I know there is a detailed breakdown on the website, but haven't explored it) but I would imagine the fact you 'only' started playing a few years ago means if anything you'll go up as you replace those N/A years! In contrast, old duffers like me in third will gradually drop down the HoF as we're usurped by you lot 🙂

Good luck either way and hope your season improves. I beat you getting Siggy in last week. But benched him after debating him or Alonso.

Thanks. The live HOF has me down in 15th or something so we'll see. I'm obviously hoping to rise up the OR between now and the end of the season but looking at the current scores of the known serious players, it's going to be very difficult and maybe I'll need to take a few risks. Alli captain last week was a bit of a punt that backfired though.

Steve nice to meet you! I feel that as I'm now using yours and Peter's first names, I should tell you mine, it's Will.

Really impressed with your surge up the table in recent weeks, excellent work. One player I want to ask you about is Firmino, you have shown a lot of faith him and yet he's one of these funny players with great stats playing largely OoP who hasn't fully delivered. He must be a frustrating player to own! What are your thoughts on him?

        Hi Will.

Firmino is indeed a conundrum. I was repaid for keeping the faith with his 14pt haul GW22. That was very rewarding.

If I hadn't had something more pressing to deal with each week he probably would have left my team already. However, when he plays OOP,
I don't see many better prospects at his price and he has great potential.

Spurs aside, he has good fixtures coming up (Arsenal and Man City have weak defences, so he could score) plus Liverpool have the best record against the top sides.

So I'm keeping for now and reassess WC time. He is also a great differential it seems.

Firmino is a player I rate but who (both last season and this) I never have at the right times. Last season, I kept for blank week after blank week before, predictably, selling him the week he got a brace. Likewise this season. You've done well to get a tune out of him because I lacked the patience!

i'm after a bit of transfer help this week as I don't see a simple option available to me. here's my team:

    Foster / (Pickford)
    Alonson / Baines / Coleman / (Amat) / (3.9)
    Sanchez / Hazard / Eriksen / Stanislas / (Cabaye)
    Lukaku / Carroll / Ibra

    1 FT 0.1 ITB

I want Sigy but sadly I don't have enough funds to do Stansilas & Cabaye to Sigy and Carroll (4.2). my options are:

    1) Cabaye to Carroll
    2) Sanchez / Hazard / Eriksen to Sigy
    3) Cabaye to Sigy and Zlantan to Jesus!
    4) something else

other moves I would like to do are Amat to Robertson, just to make sure I have 4 playing defenders.

    thoughts appreciated!

    thanks

I'm with Steve on this one - although don't go with our advice over your own gut, please!

I have to admit I'm wary of going without Jesus this week, but in the cold light of day binning Ibra home to Watford, or taking a hit to bring in a player who blanks twice shortly, surely can't be sensible? Obviously, if he goes and bags a hat-trick you curse yourself, but I tend to "play the percentages" as Alan Hansen was fond of saying.

Disclaimer: I tend to get itchy trigger fingers if I'm intending to roll a transfer unless I go for a run on Saturday morning, so if I sneak Jesus in at 11.29am it isn't an intentional stitch up 😉

thank you both! Alan Hansen was also fond of saying "indecision is final", which is where I find myself at the moment. Your advice is sound and I should follow it but I'm starting to talk myself into making the transfers - what happens if Andy Carroll and Cabaye don't play and Stanislas is benched again? and I only have three playing defenders... maybe I can then get Costa for Jesus next week.... thankfully a busy evening and looking after a five year old tomorrow morning to distract my itchy trigger fingers!

Best of luck this week guys, hope your good runs continue.
