DraftKings – Champions League – Free $3 Entry

The first legs of the Champions League quarter-finals take place this week, providing another opportunity to get involved in DraftKings’ European contests.

With that in mind, we take a look at the big prize pots on offer and analyse some of the key picks for your eight-man rosters.

It’s easy to register a new account at DraftKings and you’ll receive a free entry into a $3 contest if you sign up and deposit $5 or more.

This week, for a $3 buy-in there’s a $1,000 “Set Piece” game, with $100 going to first-place and 79 of the 392 potential entries winning prizes.

The “Sweeper” contest has the biggest pot for this slate – a $4 fee gives you a chance to win a share of a $12,000 prize-fund, with $1,250 going to the top spot.

TUESDAY PLAYER PICKS

Juventus v Barcelona
Dortmund v Monaco

Gianluigi Buffon – Juventus – $4,900 – G
Juve coach Massimiliano Allegri is likely to put emphasis on a clean sheet, with the away goal rule making progression a much more difficult proposition if Barcelona were to score. Promisingly, the Italian side’s veteran stopper has been in resilient form since the 1-0 victory over Porto in the round of 16 in which he picked up 14 points.

In the three league outings since, he has conceded only a single goal and made 11 saves to accrue 13.3 Fantasy Points Per Game (FPPG). That form, alongside a moderate price-tag and a reasonable chance of Juve picking up a win,  makes him a sound value pick despite the opposition.

DK1

Benjamin Mendy – Monaco – $5,200 – D
On a slate in which clean sheets appear doubtful, we’ve focused our attention on seeking a defender that has convincing attacking numbers. Monaco’s left-back certainly fits the bill, having already returned a trio of assists in four Champions League starts this term.

In his last six appearances across all competitions, the Frenchman has registered 43 crosses – an important metric in DraftKings with +0.5 points on offer even if the cross fails to reach the target. Those have helped provide a 12.5 FPPG over that run ahead of an encounter with a side defeated 4-1 by Bayern Munich at the weekend.

Paulo Dybala – Juventus – $8,400 – M/F
The Argentine has excelled at home of late, recording five goals and a pair of assists in his last five home starts. The forward was heavily involved in the 2-0 victory over Chievo Verona last time out in the league, with six shots, an assist and nine crosses contributing to a DraftKings score of 22 points.

Alternatively, Gonazalo Higuain is available for less funds and has notched back-to-back braces, though five blanks in six prior to those two hauls hints that Dybala is the more consistent option for the home clash with Barcelona.

Luiz Suarez – Barcelona – $8,900 – F
The Uruguayan requires significantly less outlay than Neymar ($10,700) and Messi ($10,500) in what is set to be a tough match-up, so he’s our preferred forward from Luis Enrique’s front three.

Barcelona were surprisingly dispatched 2-0 at the weekend by Malaga. However, Suarez delivered a goal and assist combination in each of his previous three La Liga run-outs as well as the 6-1 victory in the second leg over Paris St Germain. That reliability, both as a goal threat and a creator, when allied to his kinder price-tag makes him an intriguing prospect against Juve.

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang – Dortmund – $9,200 – F
Although the Gabonese front-man failed to score at Bayern Munich, he found the net in six straight Bundesliga matches prior to that defeat. A hat-trick in the second leg against Benfica sent the German side through to this stage and demonstrated his ability to bring in massive scores (he scored 40 points).

An 11-goal tally from his last eight matches further illustrates why he’s a worthwhile investment and the stand-out pick from the Dortmund attack – particularly considering that Monaco conceded four times to both Manchester City and Bayer Leverkusen in their last two Champions League away ties.

WEDNESDAY PLAYER PICKS

Atletico Madrid v Leicester City
Bayern Munich v Real Madrid

Jan Oblak – Atletico – $6,000 – G
The Spanish outfit appear to have the most favourable fixture of the slate considering their visitors’ underwhelming European record on the road – Leicester City have scored a single goal over their last three away outings.

The Slovenian made six saves in the goalless draw with Bayer Leverkusen to score 17 points last time out in the Champions League. The five points rewarded to goalkeepers on winning sides is another reason to risk the outlay on Atletico’s stopper, with Diego Simeone’s side likely to emerge with a victory at the Vicente Calderon.

DK1

Rafinha – Bayern Munich – $4,700 – D
The full-back has been rotated with Phillip Lahm this campaign, and after sitting out the match with Dortmund at the weekend, Rafinha looks set to start at right-back against Real Madrid. We’re hoping for points at both ends of the pitch from the Brazilian, with some attacking forays and a battle with Cristiano Ronaldo ($10,200) set to produce a respectable score.

Rafinha recorded 16 points at The Emirates in Bayern’s previous European outing, registering an assist and three crosses while also showing off his defensive attributes with four interceptions and three tackles won.

Gareth Bale – Real Madrid – $8,100 – M/F
Visiting a Bayern Munich outfit that has conceded twice in their last seven home matches across all competitions is far from straightforward for Zinedine Zidane’s men on Wednesday night.

Yet it would be remiss of us not to consider Real’s attack after they extended their scoring streak to 52 successive matches in the weekend derby draw with Atletico.

While Cristiano Ronaldo ($10,200) will undoubtedly prove a popular target for many Fantasy managers, Bale offers a more budget-friendly option and, in terms of piecing together our DraftKings line-ups, is more versatile than his team-mate, who is listed solely as a forward.

The Welshman’s goal threat also caught the eye against Diego Simeone’s side on Saturday afternoon –  a total of five attempts in the 1-1 stalemate was more than any other team-mate.

Riyad Mahrez – Leicester City – $6,500 – M/F
If Craig Shakespeare’s second European match is to end in a positive result, then it could well be a Mahrez set-piece that penetrates the stubborn Atletico back-line.

The Algerian has regained some of last season’s verve of late, notching a pair of goals and an assist over his last five appearances. An impressive 15.6 FPPG in that time frame has also included nine shots on target and 19 crosses.

Arjen Robben – Bayern Munich – $7,200 – M/F
While both Robert Lewandowski ($8,800) and Thomas Muller ($8,300) are expected to recover from a knock and ankle injury respectively, we’ve targeted their experienced team-mate as a more budget-friendly option.

The winger netted in both legs against Arsenal and was on the score-sheet against Dortmund at the weekend. A steady 18 shots and 17 crosses has also helped the Dutchman to 16.2 FPPG in five Champions League starts this season.

If you've got WC up your sleeve then I think there is a fair case to be made for getting rid of Alexis for the next 2 GWs.

For all Boro's problems they barely concede goals at home. 17 conceded in 15. Compare that to say Bournemouth's away form (let's assume you sell Alexis to afford Kane): 33 conceded in 16. Spurs are ridiculous at home too with 39 scored in 16. Oh and Arsenal have lost four on the trot away. I think Spurs are smelling blood. They have the opportunity to send a proper statement in the early kick-off; cut the gap to 4 points and put the pressure on Chelsea who travel to a team that only has lost 3 games all season. Spurs will also have an eye on improving their GD. They already have a 2 goal advantage on Chelsea, further improvement would make it a huge advantage as there is a possibility of both teams finishing level on points.

During GW34 Arsenal face City at Wembley on the Sunday. The league meeting the other week was end to end stuff and ended in a draw, which easily could be the case again. Potentially 120 tiring minutes for Alexis.

On the Wednesday Arsenal play Leicester. Leicester will play their second CL leg on the 18th, giving them an 8 day break until the Arsenal game. Don't let the Everton result fool you, there is no way they would have conceded 4 if they had an 8 day break before the game and didn't have an eye on the CL match tomorrow. I'm not expecting fireworks from Alexis considering both team’s preparations for the game (and form of course, both teams are on the opposite end of the form table). Wenger will surely have an eye on the Spurs game the following Sunday as well. Now that is a game he can't lose or else it surely will be curtains for him. This could possibly affect his selection vs Leicester. Maybe take off Alexis after 70 mins?

Spurs however play their FAC semi on the Saturday. Palace have a league game on Sunday. Then Palace-Spurs play each other on the Wednesday. Not only will Spurs have an extra rest day compared to Arsenal but their GW34 opponent will have half the rest Arsenal’s opponent have.

Alexis: 2535 mins, 18 goals, 10 assists. Goal per 141 mins. Assist per 254 mins. Attacking return per 91 mins.
Kane: 1917 minutes, 19 goals, 4 assists. Goal per 101 mins. Assist per 479 mins. Attacking return per 83 mins.

TLDR: Kane returns more frequently than Alexis. Spurs are the better team, GW33 fixture is as plus as it gets, they are in red hot form, have a reason to score as many goals as possible (goal difference). They also have more rest between the games than Arsenal, plus their GW34 opponent get half the rest Arsenal’s GW34 opponents are getting. Arsenal on the other side are in free fall, GW33 fixture is a banana skin. Never mind improving their goal difference, they can’t even score enough to get the points.

I feel if you can ship Alexis and get Kane either for free or maximum a hit, then go for it. Everything points towards Kane outscoring Alexis over the next 2 GWs (unless Wenger tells us he will use Alexis as the CF). With WC in hand bringing Alexis back for the doubles won’t be a problem.

Don't need the money. I could bring in Hazard for a hit but I choose to start Siggy and King instead. Might sell next week for a DGW mid and then buy back with WC for the doubles. For now I choose to bench until he regains something resembling form

I'm surely tempted to sell Sanchez but Wenger will have to change something and fixtures are still good. I do have my WC but also my TC chip so it's either Kane this week or Sanchez/Gabbiadini in 35. So if the Arsenal DGW is for 35, I can't play him wildcard to get him back and use my TC chip in the same week

Other than competing for "War and Peace" in length, this is spot on Team Cruel. I forgot about Arsenal -City FA derby in week 34. Sanchez went last night... Wenger can't be trusted to put Sanchez at Lone Striker so no point having him.

It all comes down to the big question of will Wenger now play him as CF? Personally, I don't think he will change his stubborn ways. Currently, I'm thinking of getting rid!

      With this team

      Pickford, Heaton
      Alonso, Valencia, Baines, Brunt, Pieters
      Sanchez, Alli, Siggy, Tadic, King
      Ibrah, Lukaku, Llorente

      and with 2FT, £0.1ITB, and WC intact for GW35/36, I am now pondering either;

      A. Sanchez/Llorente > Zaha/Kane or
      B. Siggy/Llorente > Zaha/Benteke

I'm leaning towards B but fear Kane will burn me whichever way I go. Thoughts anyone?

I don't have my WC left and I sold him for Zaha (to afford Aguero) before gw32.

If Arsenal gets back on track and Sanchez too I can still bring him back for his doubles, or DGW37 at least (by getting rid of Aguero for instance).

I don;t need to ditch him this week as a new Kane owner...but yep, he's gone ahead of GWK 34 as part of a Zaha, Ibra - Sanchez and CArroll switcheroo.

I'm intrigued to see what he does against Boro - but he'd have to score at least a hattrick to make me want to keep.

So he scores a brace and you still sell 🙂 ??

Selling Sanchez is a bit like when to play your WC, it is very much dependant on how your team is set up, and the chips left at your disposal. Either way, I think you have to have an open mind to both scenarios of selling and keeping Sanchez going forwards. Watch him vs Boro this weekend, as it should give us more evidence as to the best way forward.

I don't think Arsenal can turn this slump around, but I still think Sanchez personal output can return, but I have to have an open mind to the possibility of selling him for GW34.

          This.

Also the 26.5% ownership is still a factor (53% in the Top 1000 if folks around here are correct). If you're leading your ML, like i am, and all the chasers have him, I think you have to keep him, and I am.

That all said, Sanchez's hauls have fallen off a cliff - 6 in the first half of the season, just 2 since.

Then again, he hasn't gone more than 3 games without scoring all season and he's currently on a 3 game scoreless streak.

Cheers TC - nice summary and analysis in a nutshell. Some good reasoning here I think.

Arsenal have regressed at a stage this season as in previous seasons. It's easy to say it's everyone else except Sanchez and he's on the wing, but he has been productive from the wing in previous seasons, but his stats show he is not producing as he has done previously in this position.

There seem to be better options out there at the present time and I held him last year for the run-in which turned out to be a mistake.

Total torture as an owner watching him last night - a player that gifted completely stifled by the most stubborn manager on the planet. Wenger deserves all he is getting.

Thankfully in my case I feel like I have money to burn - can do Kun to Kane and Lukaku to Ibra the following week without a hit at the moment (keeping Tekkers for DGW). So no great rush to sell if Wenger swallows his pride.

this is tough - maybe. based on the logic above.

though if you do, you have to have a plan to bring him back for the 2 DGWs. Not having him for those could be a criminal mistake.

Yeah good point. Yeah would just be 2 transfers away from getting him back (at most). Good point you made above about ownership - leading a few of my mini leagues so maybe the safer play is to hold.

I've sold him already and I don't have a WC up my sleeve

May bring him back in a few weeks (quite easy with just a -4) but his price is just ridiculous, and Zaha could easily outscore him over the next 3 GW's for less than half the price

I'm seeing it as will Sanchez or Kane get more points between now and the end of the season.

You recon that having Dele Eriksen Walker and Kaku(c) is enough to survive without Kane or I should do some mumbo jumbo to get him ??

    Playing my WC:

    Heaton/Pickford (or Jaku)
    Alonso/Jagielka/Shaw/Yoshida/Benalouane
    Davies(or De Roon)/Hazard/Coutinho/Zaha/Alli
    Ibra/Lukaku/Benteke

    Thoughts?

Most people on a wildcard seem to be going for a big three up top. Any reason why, given the options in midfield?

I'm not convinced about Ibra's fixtures either, so you could always rotate your front two in a 3-5-2.

    1. Rover
      • 7 Years
      7 years, 18 days ago

It's exactly because of that... options in midfield. Tough to find budget options up front while you can easily find budget friendly options in midfield.
