Top 5 Career Hall of Fame – Gameweek 34 Review

Gameweek 34 belonged to Steve Poulsom in our career Hall of Fame (HoF) Top Five. The career number four manager played his Wildcard and captained Crystal Palace’s in-form Christian Benteke to reach a season-high rank of 38,331.

Go back half the season to Gameweek 17 and Steve’s current rank appears remarkable – at the time he languished down in 845,911.

A reduced article this week due to time constraints, focusing on the moves and strategies employed by the five elite managers who grace the upper echelons of the career Hall of Fame. Members can see the latest top five via our Live Hall of Fame update.

To help out I have also deployed Fusen’s FPL Statistico tool to gain an extra insight into their thinking.
Before we look at their teams in more detail, here’s why they are the best FPL managers:

Small red arrows this week for Peter Kouwenberg, Marlen Rattiner, and David Meechan. Having Wildcarded recently Marlen and David will have been disappointed with the injuries suffered to their squads. Double gameweek players Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Fabio, and Victor Valdes in particular.

A small green arrow for Ville Ronka as his patience in Chelsea’s Diego Costa paid off. Steve’s surge up the table makes it 14 green arrows in the last 17 gameweeks.

The graph above shows the ranks of the Top Five managers over the 34 Gameweeks so far. The vertical scale is from rank 1 to 1M. The distance between the ranks corresponds to the number of points separating them. For instance there are 214pts between rank 1 and rank 10,000, and 273pts between 10,000 and 1M. The graph gives an idea of how difficult it is to move up the ranks as you near the summit.

CAPTAIN

Screen Shot 2017-04-28 at 17.05.07

A disappointing week for our elite quintet – if you captained Alvaro Negredo, Marcus Rashford or Alexis Sanchez you were in good company

Over the season Sanchez has been picked as captain 29% of the time, averaging 14.2pts when chosen. Manchester City’s Sergio Aguero follows in popularity having been handed the armband 23% of the time, averaging 15.9pts as captain or triple captain, with Everton’s Romelu Lukaku chosen 12% of the time averaging a mighty 20.7pts.

In the graphic below I’ve displayed this information for the five most popular captain picks.

Screen Shot 2017-04-28 at 17.05.15

Overall the Top Five have known when to put the armband on Lukaku, as he has handsomely repaid the faith placed in him when chosen as captain. You could argue that the trolls in this graphic are Tottenham’s Harry Kane and United’s Ibrahimovic. They have not been explosive choices on the few occasions that they have been trusted with the armband, averaging 12.0 and 13.2 points respectively.

Despite picking Negredo this week, Peter remains the best performing manager out of the Top Five in his ability to select the right captain. His 531 points is the top score in this metric by some margin. It is no surprise that he is also the highest ranked FPL manager of the five.

Marlen made the move for Manchester United’s Marcos Rojo before the Red Devils defender was injured in the Europa League. As a result he took an extra hit to bring in teammate Eric Bailly.

Players OutFoster, Heaton, Valencia, McAuley, Mee, Sigurdsson, Eriksen, Firmino, Barnes

On his Wildcard Steve backed Palace to deliver the goods, bringing in three of their players. He clearly feels that with a home fixture against Burnley to come this week they are the right horse to back as Sam Allardyce works his magic.

A little surprisingly after he returned 11 points against West Brom, Steve decided to dispense with Liverpool’s Roberto Firmino. Liverpool’s decent fixtures despite not having a double gameweek, were not enough to persuade Steve to keep an asset that he has shown great faith in this season. In Steve’s team for 28 gameweeks the Brazilian averaged 5.3 points per match, which is a slightly low return given his price and strong underlying stats.

Over the course of the season Steve has mustered more immediate transfer points minus hits than any of his fellow bosses at the HoF’s top table. Although Peter and Ville are yet to play their Wildcards, so this may change.

Immediate transfer success is not in itself proof of overall success but simply one part of a complex picture. Steve for instance is 17 points ahead of Peter in this metric, however he is 125 points behind overall.

One obvious result of making more transfers is an increase in Team Value. Not surprising that Peter has the most valuable squad.

The standard 3-4-3 was again popular this week with four managers choosing this formation.

Over the season Ville and Marlen have been strong advocates of 3-4-3, Marlen opting for the formation 27 times. Yet it is David, favouring 3-5-2, who has scored the highest average points with 62.4. It has also been the most successful formation for Peter, the seven times he has chosen or defaulted to 3-5-2 he has average 69 points.

3-4-3 has been favoured 58% of the time by the career HoF Top Five, with 3-5-2 second with 24%. 4-4-2 is the third most popular on 10%.

Defenders – Valencia, Alonso, Gibson, (Yoshida / Chambers)

Midfielders – Eriksen, Alli, Sanchez, Zaha, Coutinho

Forwards – Lukaku, Kane, (Negredo / Benteke)

With nine players now in over 50% of the teams there is a certain consistency to the template. However will Middlesbrough and Crystal Palace players retain their places ahead of the two double gameweeks?

What of the only player to be present in all five team, Romelu Lukaku – will his price and the lack of a double gameweek affect his ownership?

Who will Ville and Peter replace Negredo with – has the returning Gabriel Fernando de Jesus done enough to turn heads? or what about double double gameweek Saints player Manolo Gabbiadini?

In the sub 6.0 category Bournemouth’s Josh King continues to offer good value for Peter, purchased for £5.4 back in Gameweek 28. Marlen, Steve and David will be hoping for more from Palace’s Wilfried Zaha ahead of an enticing home encounter with Burnley.

With four crucial Gameweeks to go will Ville, Marlen and Steve join Peter and David in the top 10,000?

I'm two players out of mirroring their template- crucially those two players are Benteke and Eriksen - with 39 pts between them this week (if the former was captained) it goes to show that only a couple of players can make all the difference some weeks.

Thanks again for this - fascinating read. Be interesting to see how Steve does with all those palace and Boro assets post wildcard.

It will be, interesting time Steve chose to wildcard, obviously feels he can tweak his squad sufficiently ahead of DGW37. Palace's home match with Hull in 37 is appealing, but can't imagine he will keep all three players, we shall see.

Thank you for getting the article up so swiftly.

Great work; I've seen less in Masters theses! Goes to show that hof-ers go template, and it seems to be the key to their steady success.

Thank you, this article has become slightly copy/paste each week. I keep wishing I could think of better ways to dissect their teams.

Do hof-ers go template or do their teams become template? a weakness of this article is that we are always looking at what has happened rather than what will happen. Although I hope there are some clues to help with future decisions. Peter's thoughts below are intriguing - no mention of Lukaku and he's considering dropping Kane. I wonder what next week's template will look like!

    Evening, TM.

I had a mare benching Eriksen over Alli and picking Negrado over Benteke (the two 50-50 decisions) but you can't win them all, hey?

In more interesting news, I'm close to wildcarding, possibly to this motley crew:
    Cech, Caballero
    Yoshida, Stephens, Bailly, Gabriel, Holgate
    Hazard, Sanchez, Eriksen, Sane, King
Aguero, Gabi, Benteke (money to Costa to next week)

I posted it earlier and the comments echoed my fears, particularly about City screwing me over and the absence of Kane, but in terms of shameless double gameweek chasing it seems solid to me. Thoughts?

I really like the Kane thing!
Do not like Saints tripple up for gw36, but I like it for 37.
Like the keepers and Holgate but Gabriel not secured starts in 37 since Mustafi will be back..

Haha, but you're the knight of the realm, no? And I was only top for 3 days or so 🙂 Anyway, anyone who ignores feedback because they think they can predict the future better is talking nonsense, so I appreciate your comments.

I tend to agree with you on Saints, but there is certainly value in there and not too many DGW options in that range, or single players I'd play over 2 extra Saints fixtures.

I think Gabriel will get me through the GW35 double and gives me a few options in that range if there are clues he won't stick, but that was my final change so may well be over-tinkering on my part.

As long as you can motivate every desicion no player is wrong.
Is the Kane thing a gamble to reclaim top spot at the end of the season? It would be great to be No 1 at the end right? 😉

I do feel a bit queasy at the thought of dropping Kane. I got rid after that horrible double home blank just before he went on a crazy run of goals and it was awful watching him bang in hat-trick after hat-trick without him.

I may yet relent, but my current choice is just because City and Chelsea should both be highly motivated for their awesome fixtures (until league positions become certain), so just seems logical. I could easily be eating my words on this one...

      Good Evening MPP,

I must admit when I saw both you and Ville had picked Negredo captain I thought I was onto a winner, in the end de Roon on my bench out scored him. At least I take comfort in the knowledge that I wasn't alone 🙂

Your wildcard looks template with a daring twist. From reading a few of the wildcard teams mentioned a number of the transfers seem to be driven by a fear of not owning players, particularly someone like Sanchez. In a way I find it odd you've gone with Sanchez and not Kane, as Kane is performing well I think. Although Sanchez presents himself as the obvious DGW36 captain option. Interestingly the current FPL number one doesn't have Sanchez, although he has funds to upgrade a player (he's used his WC).

Your Aguero choice I find a little surprising, only because of Jesus. Pep said on 14 April about Kun: "It was always good, from the beginning, it was always good," he said of the forward's attitude. "No complaints. Maybe now he understands better what we’re looking for. He’s trying and that is what I want. When he misses chances, always you can improve, but we’ve no complaints." See from about 7:45 in this interview http://bit.ly/2oAwjWr

My feeling is Kun tries hard to do what Pep wants, but Jesus does what Pep wants. I just think Pep is frustrated that Kun misses quite a few chances, Jesus seems so clinical - such anticipation in the box and so fast. I'm very tempted to get him this week over Gabbi.

Ok the interview was two weeks ago and there are more recent quotes from Pep saying they can play together but I fancy Jesus to at least disrupt Aguero's productivity. What happens if Jesus starts converting those chances Aguero's missed? Of course if they play together they could even enhance each other, they could both benefit, who knows?

There are a lot of good reasons for getting Gabbi this week - his shots in the box stats vs Hull's poor defensive stats. But Hull have much more to play for, I wonder if they might be really fired up for this game. Or will Southampton perform as Bournemouth did against Boro? Ultimately if I had my wildcard I would get Gabbi, it seems sensible. I'm just jealous I don't have my WC 😉

Good luck! I'll be fascinated to see what you decide.

ps reading it back I do realise it isn't a straight choice between Sanchez and Kane as they play different positions. Just thought I would point that out 🙂

Agree with an awful lot of what you've said - all valid points. It sounds as if I'm trying to convince myself now but...

I am hoping/ expecting Aguero to get serious minutes this weekend vs Boro. He can always be downgraded to Jesus if we sense the winds of change next week, although obviously that does muck about with the team structure.

Sanchez choice is 10% possible positional shift, 10% double double (as opposed to just double) but yeah 80% fear of ownership. I actually think the most cost effective solution is not leave him out, especially with other options firing in midfield, but the fear factor is there.

Kane a huge risk, for sure, though fixtures are poor.

I agree on Hull. If they had a double, I'd have 3 of them in regardless of fixtures. But getting Gabi for (potentially, although he won't play them all) 5 games in 3GWs starting with home to Hull seems easily the best option at that price, especially as I may well have Tekes. I did look at Afobe too.

But overall, yes I agree that the Ag choice has a big impact on the rest of the team. I think people going with Jesus instead are also gambling, but there is a gamble whatever.

back online: it is indeed a gamble either way. City's attacking verve is very tempting - they were persistent away against Southampton and got their rewards, I can see a similar game against Boro. I feel very nervous not having any City cover at the moment. Decisions, decisions... i suppose you could always do Aguero > Jesus and Gabbi > Kane (if funds allow). Although Kane could do well this weekend I don't see him getting a hat-trick.

Any love for Huth? bit of goal threat and decent fixtures outside of the double.

Cheers, TM. 6 hours now to tinker (and muck things up!) so who knows how the final team will look.

Huth seems to be getting a bit of interest from those in the know, so could be a great shout, though at the moment he's not in my plans.

Anyone fancy jogging up to Manchester and giving Pep and interview solely about gametime for Jesus and Ag? Can you imagine the uproar here if he had something reliable on that?

Ha I've just been looking at the Man City website to try to find clues, the best i've got is from Yaya: “Aguero is doing very well and Gabriel Jesus is coming into the team again,” he said. “At the moment, it’s difficult because we’re missing the goal but if we have our full strikers to make the difference it’ll be important for us.” https://www.mancity.com/news/first-team/2017/04/28/manchester-city-united-yaya-toure-interview/1493385537128

"Full strikers" - meaning both play together? in the article Yaya goes on to lament their inability to take enough of their chances. There's another article in which Jesus said predictably when asked if he was ready to play from the start at the Riverside Stadium: “Yes, yes I feel very well and in shape.” https://www.mancity.com/news/first-team/2017/04/28/manchester-city-united-gabriel-jesus-interview/1493394455022

I don't know what this really tells us, Jesus is likely to play some part I think even if he doesn't start. Aguero is perhaps more likely to lead the attack, and obviously he has explosive potential. As I can't afford Negredo to Aguero I'm trying to see a picture in which Jesus starts, but it in all likelihood it's wishful thinking on my part.

I would tend to agree - Aguero to start and Jesus to come on and probably do some damage. But let's be honest, nobody can read Pep's mind of all people.

I think I've made my final tweaks (!). Will be as above except for:
Kane and Adam Smith instead of Teke(Costa) and Bailly.

The theory is that I can then go Ag and Gabi to Jesus and Costa next week for -4 ( 🙂 ) or Kane to Costa. I could easily just have Jesus and Costa on the wc but would like 1 extra week.

                    Best of luck!

I think I'm getting Jesus over Gabbi. In every article and player interview I keep reading between the lines that Jesus is going to play, I know it's my own bias (confirmation bias, looking for evidence to support my belief) it's not rational but I want it to be true! Likewise I've now decided Marco Silva will have his players so motivated and focused that there is no chance Gabbi will score. Again evidence would suggest otherwise, and I will surely regret my decision... 10min to go.

Your WC team is looking good, I think a wise move to include Kane. I feel reassured you have Stephens and Garbiel at the back. I'm thinking of getting one or both for the double next week. I already have Yoshida and Holgate as well. Save money on defenders and invest in attack, I like it 🙂

It's going okay, thanks for asking. Generally packed and ready for moving over next week. It's been good to sort through old things and make a few decision - time for my Subbuteo teams to go on eBay at last!

Also I took a leaf out of your book this evening and did some exercise, feel much better for it. I think moving / change is always a little stressful even if there are positive reasons for it. The endorphins have helped 🙂 I went to my local boxing club, I hadn't been for a while and it was good to catch up with some familiar faces. I also got the lowdown on the big fight tomorrow - are you a boxing fan? (sorry to go off topic here)

Good stuff, TM, glad you had a chance to get out and about and away from what is certainly a very stressful experience (the move, not my wildcard). I'm not a massive boxing fan, but I like sport generally and know enough about tomorrow's fight to know that it should be a good one. I'll reply to your kind words about the wc on the other message (though time running out before price changes).

Yes in a way I'm glad I've played my wildcard - moving and wildcard stress at the same time would be too much 😉

Actually the thinking is tomorrow's fight could be a fairly dull affair - Klitschko a slight favourite to win by nullifying Joshua. An intriguing fight rather than an explosive one is predicted. Anyway don't let me distract you from important wildcard dealings!

Feeling pretty good following the comment in the article about Steve's rank since GW17 - I was 1.05m at the time and just hit 26k this weekend. Now just 20-30 points behind the leaders in my mini leagues and pushing.

Shows that you should not give up on a season even if it's going badly.

Indeed, that's one reason I've found it interesting to look at the career top five rather than the live top five - seeing how the top FPL managers react to adversity.

Congratulations on your impressive turnaround! What do you think has been the difference between your first 17 gameweeks and the second?

Has it been a question of taking risks? or simply the longer the season goes on more information becomes available allowing you to make better decisions?

Ville interest me most how he does so well with no hits and patience in players like barkly and Costa when most would of pulled the trigger long ago. When I compare these guys style to myself to try to improve I see there captaincy choice (except this week) is much more consistent but I am not sure how they do it. Ville seems to also do better with squad players like Pieter and Robertson were as I juggle mine around to much as always the article is thought provoking

Thank you Kryten, and congratulations in our cup match, I hope I'll be able to say I lost to the winner 🙂

Ville's patience is remarkable. A few gameweeks back he benefited from keeping Kane in his team after others had dropped him following disappointing returns against Sunderland and Boro, he was rewarded with 20pts against Stoke.

Faith in Costa also rewarded. I notice Sanchez is in his team - this alone makes me want him back in mine. Very interested to see what he does with his wildcard, suddenly having loads of free transfers how will he change his team?

I was wondering if players have purple patches in cycles - does he know that if he holds onto a player for long enough he is likely to come back into form?

    Captain:

    A/ Kane
    B/ King
    C/ Gabby?

I'm actually thinking possibly King. Currently on Kane though, but I don't like the logic of "he always scores in NLD". The same logic was applied to Lukaku against WHM the other week, and he got 2pts... 4min to go....

captain choices and transfers this week.

    Ville - Gabbiadini
    Marlen - Benteke
    Peter - Kane
    Steve - Kane
    David - Coutinho

    Ville - Negredo > Gabbiadini
    Marlen - save FT
Peter - WC (see comments above)
    Steve - Lukaku > Costa
    David - Fabio + Valdes > Stephens + Caballero

So Ville captains Gabbiadini. Blind faith made me transfer in Jesus instead of the Italian. I'm off hide behind a big sofa!
