Top 5 Career Hall of Fame – Gameweek 35 Review

To help with those last minute transfer dilemmas this week’s article on the Top Five career Hall of Fame (HoF) managers includes a detailed look  Peter Kouwenberg’s deployment in Gameweek 35 of his wildcard.

Peter ended Gameweek 35 with a score of 71 and moves up to a season high of 423 in the overall FPL standings. Aiming for hat-trick of three digit finishes, Peter is now only 33 points outside the top 100.

This article focuses on the moves and strategies employed by the five elite managers who grace the upper echelons of the career Hall of Fame. Members can see the latest top five via our Live Hall of Fame update.

To help out I have also utilised Fusen’s FPL Statistico tool to gain an extra insight into their thinking.
Before we look at their teams in more detail, here’s why they are the best FPL managers:

Only David qualified for the cup and he went out in Gameweek 19. Only Ville still has his Wildcard, all apart from David have played their Triple Captain chip, and three have also played their AOA chip.

A generally disappointing week for everyone apart from Peter, the only manager to score more than 50 points.

Ville Ronka slips to 20,308 and in his ninth season as an FPL manager is in real danger of finishing outside the top 10,000 for the first time ever. Southampton’s Manolo Gabbiadini followed Boro’s Alvaro Negredo in recording disappointing captain scores for the HoF career number one. Surely on his Wildcard now and with Bench Boost still play, the Finnish Enigma will need to summon all of his FPL managerial powers if he is to retain top stop in the HoF.

The graph above shows the ranks of the Top Five managers over the 35 Gameweeks so far. The vertical scale is from rank 1 to 1M. The distance between the ranks corresponds to the number of points separating them. For instance there are 205pts between rank 1 and rank 10,000, and 279pts between 10,000 and 1M. The graph gives an idea of how difficult it is to move up the ranks as you near the summit.

CAPTAIN

Screen Shot 2017-05-05 at 16.23.53

Peter and Steve Poulsom were the only managers to captain Tottenham’s Harry Kane. Although his five points from the North London Derby wasn’t exactly an explosive return it certainly bettered the extremely disappointing returns from Messrs Benteke, Gabbiadini, and Coutinho.

After a week to forget on the captain front, will our Top Five back the out of form Alexis Sanchez to deliver over two fixtures?

Over the season Sanchez has been picked as captain 28% of the time, averaging 14.2pts when chosen. Manchester City’s Sergio Aguero follows in popularity having been handed the armband 22% of the time, averaging 15.9pts as captain or triple captain, with Everton’s Romelu Lukaku chosen 12% of the time averaging a mighty 20.7pts.

In the graphic below I’ve displayed this information for the five most popular captain picks.

Screen Shot 2017-05-05 at 16.24.30

Overall the Top Five have known when to put the armband on Lukaku, he has handsomely repaid the faith placed in him when chosen as captain. You could argue that the trolls in this graphic are Tottenham’s Harry Kane and United’s Ibrahimovic. They have not been explosive choices on the few occasions that they have been trusted with the armband, averaging 11.2 and 13.2 points respectively.

Peter remains the best performing manager out of the Top Five in his ability to select the right captain. His 541 points is the top score in this metric by some margin. It is no surprise that he is also the highest ranked FPL manager of the five.

TRANSFERS – Gameweek 35

ManagerVilleMarlenPeterSteveDavid

A wretched week in the transfer department with only David Meechan’s new recruits out performing their replacements. Not even Ville was patient enough to hold onto Alvaro Negredo who, like Palace’s Christian Benteke the week before, scored against his former employers.

PETER’S WILDCARD

Players InAguero, Gabbiadini, Sanchez, Sane, Gabriel, Holgate, Smith, Stephens, Yoshida, Caballero, Cech,
Players OutLukaku, Negredo, Alli, Coutinho, Chambers, Gibson, Valencia, Alonso, Brunt, Pickford, Heaton
RemainersKane, Hazard, King, Eriksen

Not only was Peter (aka MyPrettyPony) kind enough to share his Wildcard moves ahead of the deadline, he also outlined his possible Gameweek 36 moves in last week’s comments section.

This week could see Aguero and Gabbiadini making way for Jesus and Chelsea’s Diego Costa, which would give him a front 8 of; Kane, Costa, Jesus, Sanchez, Hazard, Eriksen, Sane and King. Wow!

A budget defence supports such a fearsome and expensive front eight, however that didn’t mean a lack of points in Gameweek 35. Southampton duo Yoshida and Stephens along with Bournemouth’s Adam Smith added a collective 22 points to his Gameweek score.

It’s set to be an exciting finish to the campaign for Forest fan Peter, with a first top 100 finish still possible.

GW35 Immediate Points Gained from Transfers-90-4-110-1
Minus Points Hits-90-4-110-1

Oddly, despite scoring 71 points, Peter recorded a negative total on his transfer dealings. This is due to former charges including Negredo, Dele Alli and Boro’s Calum Chambers all having good gameweeks. Peter seems better off when taking a hit!

Over the course of the season Steve has mustered more immediate transfer points minus hits than any of his fellow bosses at the HoF’s top table.

Immediate transfer success is not in itself proof of overall success but simply one part of a complex picture. Steve for instance is 20 points ahead of Peter in this metric, however he is 147 points behind overall.

One obvious result of making more transfers is an increase in Team Value. Not surprising that Peter has the most valuable squad, allowing him to purchase such an expensive front eight.

The standard 3-4-3 was again popular this week with three managers choosing this formation.

Over the season Ville and Marlen Rattiner have been strong advocates of 3-4-3, Marlen opting for the formation 29 times. Yet it is David, favouring 3-5-2, who has scored the highest average points with 61.4. It has also been the most successful formation for Peter, the seven times he has chosen or defaulted to 3-5-2 he has average 69 points.

3-4-3 has been favoured 58% of the time by the career HoF Top Five, with 3-5-2 second with 23%. 4-4-2 is the third most popular on 10%.

Goalkeepers – Pickford, Caballero

Defenders – Valencia, Alonso, Yoshida, (Gibson), (Stephens)

Midfielders – Sanchez, Eriksen, Alli, Zaha, Sane

Forwards – Lukaku, Kane, (Costa / Benteke / Gabbiadini)

With eleven players now in over 50% of the teams there is a certain consistency to the template.

However will Middlesbrough and Crystal Palace players retain their places ahead of the two double gameweeks? Or are managers now stuck with these assets?

In the sub 6.0 category Bournemouth’s Josh King continues to offer good value for Peter, purchased for £5.4 back in Gameweek 28.

With three crucial Gameweeks to go will Ville, Marlen and Steve join Peter and David in the top 10,000?

Thanks for this. Big week for Peter with rivals using their wildcard this week. In particular he needs to keep an eye on Mark's wildcard - as he faces him in the FFS Cup in GWK 36.

I'm not a top HoF manager but I would certainly be looking to include a city player. Jesus or Sane seem the obvious choices. I even like the look of Siggy despite the lack of a double GW. Presume you have BB left?

I agree that City - probably Jesus - is a great shout. Good team all round though. Agree BB question is a factor.

Insanely detailed, TM, amazing work as always.

One slight addition, the point about Chambers and Negrado isn't as 'negative' as it might sound because if I'd kept them they would have been on my bench anyway (even more frustrating!) So even the supposed elite can't spot Boro points against City, eh?

Hi, Jonty. I'm pretty relaxed about Mark's Wildcard, but not because I think I'm going to beat him. In the previous draft he shared I think it was his Alonso, Kos and Alli vs my Stephens, Gabriel and Sane and whichever way you look at it he'd be unlucky to lose that. I could yet take a hit (I brought in Jesus for Aguero earlier in the week with my free), but then I've obviously got make up the -4. Anything can happen, but I'd honestly rather be in his shoes. Same applies to LMS, where quite a few will be playing a chip of some type. All good fun, though.

Yes, I imagine only managers who were so frustrated with Negredo in GW34 and stopped playing fantasy football as a result had any Boro players in their starting 11 in GW35!

The immediate transfer points is a tricky one as it includes benched players and captain points, plus you were obviously making transfers with one eye on GWs 36 & 37. So not a perfect measure anyway. I wish I was clever enough to export each managers gameweeks as a CSV, I would be curious to play with formulas in excel to look at transfer success over a longer period.

Are you planning on keeping Gabbiadini for the doubles? Who do you think you might bench this week?

      Thanks, gents.

Actually, TM, that's basically my current query. I can either play Gabi or Sane (no hit, benching the other) or I can bring in Costa for Gabi (-4) and also bench Sane. I'm not so worried about the hit (my Aguero-Gabbi choice last week over Jesus-Costa outscored the latter by over 4 points) but obviously it would hurt in various knock out competitions.

I really do think Costa could have a great week (based mainly on Boro's situation) but am reluctant to bench Sane (less worried about Gabi, as it happens). 29 minutes to choose!

I've also got to say that if (as likely) I skipper Sanchez it is purely fear factor. If he was owned by, say 20% of the top 10,000 I think I'd gamble elsewhere, but clearly his effective ownership will be insane and he has the potential to hammer anyone who doesn't captain him. So it's the coward's approach for me.

so tricky, I wish I could get Costa in too but it ruins my defence and gives me a benching headache!

Otherwise I don't have Gabbi and I could just get him and Sanchez in for -4. Arsenal's defensive stats aren't great.

Or I could do a -8 or even -12, with Cech and Kos coming in along with Sanchez and Anichebe, who I would bench. I guess over the two DGWs Cech and Kos should out score Hennessey and Gibson. I have no cup ties to worry about so I might just go for it. I hope you'll be proud of me for taking such a big hit 😉

        Good luck deciding.

Zero 7's special track - Monday Night - just came on my laptop so on the basis that Costa plays Monday I've got him in. Half expect him to be benched or get a yellow (Sane hat-trick 🙂 ) but you know I like a hit.

-12 - monster! What's your side like this week then? You should have included Stephens and Sane as they are on my bench and should be good for 20 points.

Brave decision benching Sane but I definitely think your Costa move is a good one. If only I had your TV! (team value not television!)

so my monster -12 leaves me with:

              Cech
              Koscielny / Yoshida / Olsson
              San(c)hez / Hazard / Eriksen / Sigurdsson / King
              Kane / Jesus

              Pickford / Valencia / Holgate / Anichebe

With BB next week I just thought the extra two fixtures for Cech + Kos vs Hennessey + Gibson made it worth taking the plunge. Essentially I got rid of 4 SGWers for 4 DGWers, mitigating the damage somewhat I hope. He who dares Rodney, he who dares.

I did think about getting Llorente instead of Anichebe as he could do well in the remaining matches, but I would have benched him this week anyway so decided a cheaper option was better.

Next week I'm thinking Valencia to a Spurs or Chelsea defender. Currently have 0.8 ITB.

Good Luck! Great work with the article as always 🙂 I wildcarded last week, I wanted gabbi, jesus, hazard and sane with the fixtures they had last week anyway so thought I'd bring the wildcard forward a week and benefit from it for longer.

This week my one transfer was Jaku in for Hennesey, forming a Hull double up with Maguire. Thought with the wildcard team in place I'd try something a little different with my free transfer this week!

Good moves, I think Hull (and Swansea) provide excellent value and both teams will hopefully remain competitive until the last match.

A lot this week will depend on Gabbi vs the Arsenal defence, I'm not expecting an Arsenal CS but I at least hope Cech gets a few save points.

Cheers, yeah that was my thinking behind it. With the title race seemingly over after tonights events, there might be a midfield spot opening up once again for sigurdsson! .....Just looked at your team and seen you have him already! That was probably a shrewd move already and looks even shrewder now, you could be well ahead of the game there.

Indeed, I've gone without the arsenal defence (poured all my funds into attack), so I'm very much in the Gabbi fan club for the next couple of weeks!

Its quite interesting how you have backed swansea and the arsenal defence, whereas I've gone with the Hull defence and Gabbi. Will be interesting to compare how we fare over this gameweek 🙂

it will indeed! this week and till the end of the season.

I've had Siggy for a while and managed to bench him last week for his 10 point haul. They weren't looking great but seem to have improved in the last couple.

I'm looking at City players, I went with Jesus over Gabbi in GW34 and was hoping he might get a goal today... but definitely looking at getting Kompany for Valencia next week, was originally thinking Spurs or Chelsea defence but maybe they will lose an edge now.

Maybe KDB for Eriksen... I said to myself no more hits!
