Captains

Captain Poll – Gameweek 37

Ten teams play twice in Gameweek 37, so there are plenty of potentially high-scoring captaincy candidates to consider in our latest poll.

But picking a player with form, fixtures and motivation on their side as the season draws to a close could prove to be a minefield.

Arsenal’s assets are among those set to garner interest. They have a trip to a Stoke City side that’s conceded five and only kept one clean sheet in their last four bet365 Stadium encounters. Then there’s a visit from relegated Sunderland, who have only scored in three of their last 13 run-outs and conceded 18 over that period.

The Gunners also have the motivation of a top four place to pursue.

But in terms of form, it may be their rearguard that gathers more votes.

Already in Gameweek 36, keeper Petr Cech (5.3) has picked up clean sheet, bonus and save points against Manchester United at home and he still has a trip to St Mary’s to go. Similarly, the 12%-owned Laurent Koscielny (6.1) could prosper considering he only just missed out on bonus points in yesterday’s Red Devils clash, despite being booked.

As for their attacking assets, top scorer Alexis Sanchez (11.6) will need to deliver handsomely against the Saints in midweek if he is to repeat his top placing in Gameweek 36’s poll. His failure to score against Manchester United means he has just one goal in seven and has only managed to attract a mere 5,000+ new managers this week despite his pair of attractive fixtures.

Mesut Ozil (9.5) is another Gunner who lacks the form to gain substantial interest, with no attacking returns in his last three.

The search for the holy grail of form, fixtures and motivation could ensure a Manchester City player tops this week’s poll. Their 5-0 demolition of Crystal Palace at the Etihad on Saturday, Gameweek 37 home ties against Leicester City and West Brom and a top four place to cling to, mean they already dominate the transfer market.

With 35,000+ new FPL managers, striker Gabriel Jesus (8.9) is the most popular acquisition and looks a strong contender for the summit. He may have only brought in an assist against the Eagles, but with four goals and an assist in as many matches prior to last weekend, he has the pedigree to deliver.

Kevin De Bruyne’s (10.4) 17-point haul on Saturday puts him firmly in the spotlight. His two assists in that game bring his tally to 18 – a league-leading total.

The threat of rotation continues to loom large among Pep Guardiola’s troops, but the Belgian schemer looks the safest midfield asset – his 30 starts is more than any other City player. It is no surprise that with 18,000+ new managers, he is the most popular midfield acquisition this week.

Leroy Sane (7.7), who despite failing to chip in with any of City’s Palace goals, has an assist and a goal in his last four and could also attract interest.

Those voting may also be inclined to wait on news surrounding Sergio Aguero’s (12.8) groin injury, which kept him out of action at the weekend. With seven goals in his last nine league starts, the 19%-owned Argentine could be set for a late surge in interest if there is positive news from the treatment room.

As with Arsenal, Manchester City’s defence may also gather votes, particular as the Baggies have only scored in one of their last six.

The prospect of returns at both ends of the pitch has seen Vincent Kompany (5.8) – who has scored two goals in his last four – top the defenders’ transfer market, with 14,000+ new FPL managers this week.

Another eye-catching differential for the armband is Willy Cabellero (4.7), who looks secure between the sticks with Claudio Bravo out for the season. His 13,779 new FPL owners makes him this week’s most popular goalkeeping target.

Chelsea stars also have the form to entice interest as they have joined Man City at the top of the goals scored table over their last four matches, with 10 successful strikes.

But the title would be secured should they win against Middlesbrough tonight and away to West Brom on Friday, so motivation may be lacking and key players benched for next Monday’s second Gameweek 37 fixture at Stamford Bridge against Watford.

Given the Hornets have shipped 12 without reply over their last five road trips, this would be a bitter blow to those backing benched assets with the armband.

Nevertheless, with four goals and two assists in his last six, the 34%-owned Eden Hazard (10.6) should still remain a popular poll pick. The same applies to Diego Costa (10.4), who has two successful strikes and has set up team-mates on three occasions over his last four run-outs. The Spaniard’s 33.3% ownership makes his returns pivotal in terms of overall rank.

An Etihad visit and hosting Spurs is certainly not the ideal pair of fixtures for Leicester players’ captaincy credentials. But with form on their side and continued motivation, even though their only realistic goal is mid-table mediocrity, the Foxes may just defy the fixture list.

Jamie Vardy’s (9.9) consistency, with attacking returns in all but one of his last ten run-outs, makes him the most likely of Craig Shakespeare’s charges to vie for our attention. The 8.2%-owned Riyad Mahrez (8.9) has three goals in his last nine and is on spot-kick duties, offering a clear differential alternative to Vardy, who is in 14.2% of teams.

Spurs’ defeat to West Ham on Friday may just have ended their title challenge before they next kick a ball if Chelsea gain back-to-back victories.

As a result, Harry Kane (11.7), Dele Alli (9.2) and Christian Eriksen (8.9), who have nine goals and five assists between them over their last six, may struggle to make an impression in our latest poll.

Lack of attacking drive may also scupper interest in Southampton’s 8.8%-owned Manolo Gabbiadini (6.6), who has now failed to score in four outings since his return from injury in Gameweek 33.

A trip to Middlesbrough and a visit from a Manchester United squad with Europa League glory on their minds means the Saints certainly have solid fixtures, which could see votes for their goalkeeper Fraser Forster (5.0) instead.

The 4.5%-owned England stopper has already emerged as one of the heroes of the current double Gameweek, with a penalty save and a 16-point haul against Liverpool yesterday significantly boosting his armband credentials.

Swansea’s 10.9%-owned Gylfi Sigurdsson (7.4) and team-mate Fernando Llorente (6.1) are among the pick of the single Gameweek options we have included for consideration.

Unbeaten in their last three, they face a trip to Sunderland with Premier League survival back in their own hands, ensuring that this pair of Swans tick all three of the form, fixture and motivation boxes.

Romelu Lukaku’s (10.2) home form could also cause an upset, particularly to the 36,000+ FPL managers who have ditched him this week. The Golden Boot leader hosts a travel-sick Watford defence on the back of 16 goals in front of his own fans as he bids to see off the challenge of Kane for the top scorer gong.

The Captain Poll is now live in the middle column on your homepage on desktop, or via the slide-in menu on mobile and tablet under Recent Comments.

We will be back to check in on progress in the poll later ahead of the Gameweek 37 deadline when we deliver our “Captain Sensible” article, offering an analysis of the results and the statistics behind the leading contenders.

I think Alli should be better.... those guys from Spurs will give their live in the pitch.
If CHE win the first game of GW37, Hazard will not play on the second one.... he will rest to face Arsenal in final.

If Sanchez shows the slightest hint of form on Wednesday he's a really good pick. If Chelsea slip up against Boro tonight then Hazard becomes an excellent option.

I don't think so. Aguero is still injured as far as I know. Plus Pep can play them in a 2 if he's fit, as we saw at Boro. Also, Pep loves Jesus!

Haha, well put 😛 I think he was just managing his minutes a little, he has only recently returned from injury, and wants him fit and available for the remaining matches. They were also 4-0 up at the time I think so the game was won. I think even 70 mins in each match v Leicester and WBA at home makes him a solid captain choice.

I'd go Hazard IF Chelsea don't win tonight. If they do though I'm convinced Hazard will be rested for the Watford match, absolutely certain of it.

Sanchez would only enter my thoughts with a brace or more against Southampton. Yes Sanchez has been poor recently but they have faced, on the whole, ok sides. His next 3 fixtures are against poor sides with nothing to play for, could be a different story.

Btw this 'on the beach ' term which keeps getting thrown about is nonsense imo. Supposedly Southampton were one of thosde teams. Did you watch the game yesterday? Passion from all the players playing like they were fighting for a champions league spot. When Liverpool won the pen they were incensed and did you see all their reactions when forster made the save? Didn't look disinterested or 'on the beach' to me.

This is a case of when you let your fantasy thinking take over reality. Players, managers still have thier pride, future prospects etc to play for. Another case in point Sunderland putting Hull to the sword when already relegated and Hull having a must win game.

There is no on the beach and we should just play the form and fixtures as per usual.

Fantasy Football Scout daily hot topic

Why aren’t we captaining a goalkeeper every double Gameweek.

    GWK 27
Grant emerged with 13 points, while triple Captaincy favourite Aguero got 9

    GWK 34

De Gea emerged as top scorer for the week with 17, more than Christian Benteke and far more than two other popular captaincy shouts Negredo and Rashford.

    GWK 36 so far….

Cech is on 8 pts with one match to go, while Forster on 16 with another as well. Meanwhile Captain Poll favourite Sanchez sits on just three points.

So why are we backing strikers and midfielders?

I ask this as each double Gameweek I consistently fail to back a goalkeeper with the armband despite the above evidence. I’m not alone. So why are we ignoring these princes of points and dukes of the doubles?

I think for me in spite of the strong evidence that suggests goalkeepers are strong captaincy bets I don't like the idea of willing a clean sheet for my armbandee, instead I prefer to count up the goals and assists. More exciting.

A goal or assist point can't be taken away cruelly by a consolation goal in the 90th minute like a clean sheet.

But I must admit I really should adjust my view on gks as captaincy options. Hats off to any Forster, Grant or DDG captainers this season. You are braver that I.

Ha indeed. I wouldn't be surprised if he top scored but I can't see anyone doing it unless they have no OR or ML ambitions.

I like the look of Alonso. Thought of captaining a few times this season but like you say rooting for a CS is no where near as fun as rooting for a goal. Plus a Mid/For could do nothing for 179 mins and score a last minute goal to save your captain choice. The feeling of going from pending doom to elation by a late goal definitely makes this option more exciting.

          1. Adama Arnald
            • 7 Years

But then at the same time it's hard to get excited about captaining the same player that everyone else does. Because you know whatever he does will make no difference to OR.

E.g. I have captained Sanchez this week but will feel almost no emotion if he scores or fails this week.

In fact if Gabriel doesn't play I'll end up with two Saints defs so would prefer a Saints CS

I watched the Liverpool v Southampton game yesterday and it was painful just watching hoping Southampton wouldn't concede.

I'd back Alonso to do really well in the DGW for example but I wouldn't captain him - always that worry that they concede a goal and then you're only backing attacking returns which are most of the time less likely than from an attacker.

Feel the ceiling is higher for an attacker, although it doesn't always work out that way of course

          Exactly.

Imagine if you captain a defender / goalkeeper and they concede in the first 5 minutes of the first game - you'd be devastated and feel like it's game over.

With attackers there's always hope as long as they start 🙂

I suggested Cech instead of Sanchez for TC but obviously didn't have the guts to go through with it.

I think it's the ceiling that puts people off; memories of last years 25ish Sanchez/Aguero hauls mean we can't face putting it on a player with a realistic (Forster's score is unusual) ceiling of 15-16 points.

If the leagues at West Brom, rotation becomes effective immediately. Why risk players for a competition you've already won and you have a double trophy up for grabs?

Also gives him a chance to look at other players in the squad and assess their talent on the pitch.

As a Juventus supporter I can confirm this, other than the year Conte was chasing the 100 point mark, once the title is sewn up he will rest the regulars who he relied upon all season. A lot of regulars could be rested vs WAT.

It could be very coincidental so far. I guess figuring out why these GKs are doing well is more important than the small sample size that tells us that GKs have done well.

Not sure there is much evidence to suggest that we can predict who might be able to nail down CS or big save numbers in this coming week -- the Stoke CS vs City was an absolute shocker and they had been in terrible form going into the DGW, for example. Forster getting a penalty save against Liverpool is also a fluke. DDG in 34 was a more predictable one, so you probably need a top club looking to neutralize its opponent to grind out results. Would anyone really captain Caballero?

Caballero and Cech certainly fit the bill in GWK 37 based on fixture, motivation and form.

Because they are reliant on the rest of the team doing their job, to get their cs points. Just like that, their points can disappear. Too much of a risk if you're leading, but a calculated gamble if you're chasing.

Its a very good point. However for every Forster and Grant there's a Henessey lol. You still have to pick the right one. I think owning them and playing them is enough though, you are basically relying on one source of points with keepers (ok you get the odd save point and exceptional circumstances like penalty saves, but these can hardly be relyed upon). Whereas captaining outfielders you have multiple ways to pick up points.

Personally don't really understand this train of thought. Yes the goalkeepers you mentioned have done well, but at the same time there are goalkeepers who haven't.

We view it as crazy/foolish/ to captain a goalkeeper in a single gameweek so what makes it any different in a double gameweek?

I think the obvious difference is that outfield players are generally more susceptible to rotation over a DGW. I'd also speculate that teams with stacked schedules may be less adventurous and more willing to settle for draws but I haven't looked for evidence of this.

I went there and captained Koscielny this GW and it's just not worth it. The risk-reward is absolutely pathetic, I'm only 2 points higher than Sanchez captainers.

I would never choose a GK or defender as captain in any single og double gameweek because every week I dream of a 5 goal epic performance by my captain, and an attacking player seems a bit closer to fullfilling that dream. Easy as that.

Only happens once every other year tho

Surely the answer is obvious. The ceiling is higher for mids and forwards. You can only keep one clean sheet per game whereas you can score 4, 5, 6 goals in a game.

The realistic ceiling (excluding pen saves which a GK may make once every 50 games) is much higher for attackers.

It's as simple as that - explosivity

Several years ago, Fulham had a DGW, had kept 4 CS in a row and were playing two of the weakest teams. I gambled on giving the armband to their GK in an attempt to make up some lost ground.... I think I got 6 points (2 x 3) from my DGW GK and will never choose a GK again.

But I'm not bitter about it and have moved on. Honestly!

keeper can have a blinder but only needs to make 1 mistake and the points are gone.
Keeper basically starts with the 4 pt CS and can only lose it.
Chances of a penalty save come along about 4 times a season. What is the PL save record - 14?? Krul and somebody else recently.

Striker starts on 2 pts (cards aside) can basically only add to his tally. Can miss 10 chances but only needs to score 1 for a decent return. Can add points far for easily than a keeper.

You can argue general pricing rules are built around the potential to score more points per game. Highly unlikely to ever see a 7m+ keeper.

      - Reward upside ... Goalkeepers score substantially less points on average than defenders, mids & forwards
      - Choice ... You only have one keeper to choose from in your 11, whereas you probably have 7 attackers
      - Clean Sheets ... only maybe 6 or 7 on average per GW so statistically not good odds
      - Defenders ... can score goals, assists etc and get the clean sheet so why punt on a keeper ? They really don't save many penalties in a season
      - Scoring points ... greater route to points with goals and assists
Ownership ... generally you don't get hurt if a keeper gets a big haul

Yes, of course anecdotally a keeper will put its hand up but it is very much with hindsight that we consider it, and the chance of reward to risk is really quite low compared to other options - how many weeks does a keeper come out in the top 3 points gained ?

If it is really such a good idea then we would be punting on it more often (how many too 50 players have captained a keeper?). I did captain DDG once and was rewarded with a clean sheet, but it was only 6 points and I fell behind the popular captains' choice.

      Nice discussion topic though 🙂

It's because a keeper is nearly always up against one of our premium mids or fwds. I did captain Cech this week so let's see how it turns out... I thought about Forster, my original WC pick, but didn't because I assumed Sanchez would punish me... I think another reason is how our brains evaluate. The distribution of points is skewed against keepers, mids and fwds can get much higher points in any other GW whereas most of the time, keepers are restricted to clean sheet and saves - pen saves are rare. So we always skew our thinking to higher potential.

I'm not saying you weren't considering captaining a GK - I'm just saying I think it's wrong most of the time (DDG in 34 should have been considered though, but no one else). I also think that you think it's wrong as well - that's why you haven't done it.

As someone who's in his first serious season (3rd overall) I understand that my view here might be wrong, but we're here to voice our opinions. You have both the seniority + the results in the past that suggest you might be right, but somehow I doubt that.

The reason behind DDG in 34 was because we didn't really have any nailed attackers (or even defenders) from MU that GW (the chances DDG would have been rested were the smallest of all MU assets) and the other 2 teams that played in that GW were bad bad Boro and horror fixture CP, so putting the C on DDG should have been more discussed.

Forster this GW along with Grant in 27 are freak occurrences and should be look at the exceptions - not the rule. Going for Cech instead of Sanchez (or Ozil) this GW is a weak play imo, but what do I know - Cech is sitting on a cool 8... the GW ain't over though.

would rather cap a def than gk

anyway there is a reason why premium def are priced at 5.5-7m
      while premium forward are 10-14m

furthermore you can "double up" def and then cap an attacker

I think nailed on ness helps and also if both fixtures look good for cleans sheets. But yes, there are plenty of times this season when Heaton at home has been predicted a good score and delivered - sometimes more than the outfield players.

The highest keeper score is Heaton on 140 something whereas the highest mids are all on 200+ points. So if you captained the right mid all season vs the right keeper you would be well behind

There is no reason why a goalkeeper would be a better captain choice in a double gameweek, aside maybe less risk of being rested. What you need to care about is who you can expect the most points from. For each position, let's have a look at how many players have both more than 100 points and at least 4 points per match:

GKs: 2 (Heaton tops with 4.4 PPM)
      Defenders: 11 (Alonso, 5.5 PPM)
      Midfielder: 19 (Hazard, 6.5 PPM)
      Forwards: 8 (Kane, 6.5 PPM)

Clearly, there are more defenders, midfielders and strikers putting up high scores, and in principle, there is no reason to think those rules don't apply to double gameweeks. The circumstances under which a goalkeeper is expected to score more than 4.5 points in a game are rare, and during a double gameweek 8-8.5 points would be the normal return for a top goalkeeper. More points can definitely be expected from top midfielders and forwards if their games are of regular difficulty. Anecdotal evidence doesn't change that.

      1. suddenorgan
        • 13 Years

I would say that the double gameweeks are actually a slight exception that makes dull 0-0/1-0's more likely, like we say for Grant against Man city earlier in the season. More rotation/fatigue means less attacking games.

        1. Econ Man
            6 years, 12 months ago

That's just an hypothesis, although I suppose it wouldn't be that hard to test. You only need to check if there is scored significantly less average goals per match in double gameweeks. As far as I know there are scored somewhat less goals as a season progresses, so you would have to control for that. By the way, more goals are scored at the end of games when players are more tired, so the effect is not necessarily in the direction you have presupposed. You might very well be correct though, but I very much question the size of the effect (10 % less goals would be pretty damn large).

With goalkeepers we know however that their expected scores depend less on the quality of opposition, since better opposition means on average more save points, but less probability of clean sheet points. The Rate My Team model gives a good benchmark for what you can expect from a goalkeeper in a double gameweek. At the moment Caballero tops with 8.09 expected points in 37. Even if City are more likely to keep clean sheets due to rotation and fatigue, I don't see how the true value could be greater than 9. Of course some midfielders and strikers are expected to get more points than that.

I tried a plus or minus 4 on the beach/not on the beach discount/premium last week.

Think looking at say Southampton that applies much more to attack than defence though.

I reckon there's good value in you sticking to your usual format though and leaving each of us to assess whether we think a team is motivated.

Be interested to see who your form and fixture stats says is the best captain.

As per some of teh above comments, Id some of the results this week change I'll try draft in either Sanchez or hazard.

Looks like the team is set up to BB in 37. It's a good team. But you can't play that chip until 38.
So perhaps tweak the team to get a strong 11dgw's in for this gw37 and leave some other players like 2 or 3 swans and/or hull players for example on the bench to play in gw38

Good luck, btw looks like you have your minileague wrapped up

        Is it worth Keeping Sanchez?

Selling would enable me to get - Sane-Jesus-Pedro/Sterling

          keeping would mean.

          Teke > Anchiebe
          Gabbi > Jesus

          or

          Teke > Anchiebe
          Romeu > Sane

Any chance Gibbs is nailed? He and Ox looking great picks as wingbacks in this formation. I think Arse will keep it but Monreal could threaten Gibbs' spot. Although we saw him start behind Gibbs yesterday. Thoughts on a Sanchez/Ozil alternative?

What's the thoughts on gibbs? Who could take his place in that formation? Worth a punt for DGW?

Monreal has played there in this formation. Its a risk . They have a lot of games to fit in. I think it's fair to assume noone is guaranteed 270mins

Wenger will play his best formation not his best rotation... you ve seen it follow it...

I think if gibbs is fit, which he should be. He's been resting most of the season. He should play the next few games.
I think Wenger likes him. And given that they stick to this wingback business he should play him.
I will probably do Gabriel -> Gibbs for gw37
