Top 5 Career Hall of Fame – Gameweek 36 Review

To help with those last minute transfer dilemmas this week’s article on the Top Five career Hall of Fame (HoF) managers takes a look at FPL legend Ville Ronka’s wildcard moves.

Green arrows all round for our elite managers in Double Gameweek 36. Both Peter Kouwenberg and Steve Poulsom achieved season high FPL ranks of 273 and 25,126 respectively.

This article focuses on the moves and strategies employed by the five elite managers who grace the upper echelons of the career Hall of Fame. Members can see the latest top five via our Live Hall of Fame update.

To help out I have also deployed Fusen’s FPL Statistico tool to gain an extra insight into their thinking.

Before we look at their teams in more detail, here’s why they are the best FPL managers:

Both Ville and Peter have Arsenal’s Gabriel, who must be considered a doubt after being demoted to the bench for both his team’s matches in Gameweek 36.

Steve and Marlen Rattiner have already taken hits ahead of the final Double Gameweek of the season.

With twelve players now in over 50% of the teams there is a consistency to the template.

We find general agreement over the Double Gameweek players. Everton’s Romelu Lukaku and Mason Holgate are the popular Single Gameweek choices. The defender is considered good value and resides in three teams.

In the sub 6.0 category Bournemouth’s Josh King continues to offer good value for Peter, purchased for £5.4 back in Gameweek 28. However Wilfried Zaha’s stock is in decline.

There has been a significant shift of funds from Defenders to Attackers in recent weeks. The once universally popular Marcos Alonso is now found in only two teams.

Only David of this quintet qualified for the cup and he went out in Gameweek 19. All have played their final Wildcards and Triple Captain chips, and three have also played their AOA chip.

David Meechan used his Triple Captain chip on Arsenal’s Alexis Sanchez to help him to a gameweek high score of 92. He gained more from using his chip on the Chilean than the other managers gained from Manchester City’s Sergio Aguero back in Double Gameweek 27.

The graph above shows the ranks of the Top Five managers over the 36 Gameweeks so far. The vertical scale is from rank 1 to 1M. The distance between the ranks corresponds to the number of points separating them. For instance there are 221pts between rank 1 and rank 10,000, and 298pts between 10,000 and 1M. The graph gives an idea of how difficult it is to move up the ranks as you near the summit.

CAPTAIN

Screen Shot 2017-05-12 at 09.10.37

The answer to last week’s captain dilemma was to play it safe and captain Sanchez. David using his triple captain chip on the Chilean. With more choice this week will the armband remain on Arsenal’s talisman?

Over the season Sanchez has been picked as captain or triple captain 30% of the time, his 28 point return this week boosting his season average to 15.8pts when chosen. Manchester City’s Sergio Aguero follows in popularity having been handed the armband 22% of the time, averaging 15.9pts as captain or triple captain, with Everton’s Romelu Lukaku chosen 12% of the time averaging a mighty 20.7pts.

In the graphic below I’ve displayed this information for the five most popular captain picks.

Screen Shot 2017-05-12 at 09.11.13

Overall the Top Five have known when to put the armband on Lukaku, he has handsomely repaid the faith placed in him when chosen as captain. You could argue that the trolls in this graphic are Tottenham’s Harry Kane and United’s Ibrahimovic. They have not been explosive choices on the few occasions that they have been trusted with the armband, averaging 11.2 and 13.2 points respectively.

Despite selling Chelsea’s Marcos Alonso, who scored and earned a clean sheet on his way to 14 points, Ville’s new charges bettered his old players by 29 points.

A bold 8 point hit paid off for Marlen who gained 23 points on immediate transfers minus the cost of the hits. Under performing Palace players and rotation threatened United players left his team.

Over the course of the season Steve has mustered more immediate transfer points minus hits than any of his fellow bosses at the HoF’s top table. His surge up the FPL standings helped by some shrewd moves in the transfer market. Another 18 points gained this week as Petr Cech and Jack Stephens out performed Ben Gibson and David de Gea.

Immediate transfer success is not in itself proof of overall success but simply one part of a complex picture. Steve for instance is 35 points ahead of Peter in this metric, however he is 146 points behind overall.

One obvious result of making more transfers is an increase in Team Value. Not surprising that Peter has the most valuable squad.

The standard 3-4-3 was again popular this week with even David deviating from his normal 3-5-2 formation.

Over the season Ville and Marlen have been strong advocates of 3-4-3, Marlen opting for the formation 30 times.

Peter, favouring 3-4-3, has the highest average points with 61.5. He narrowly pips David by 0.1 points, David averages 61.4 points with his favoured 3-5-2.

However 3-5-2 has been the most successful formation for Peter, the seven times he has chosen or defaulted to 3-5-2 he has average 69 points.

3-4-3 has been favoured 59% of the time by the career HoF Top Five, with 3-5-2 second with 23%. 4-4-2 is the third most popular on 9%.

BENCH BOOST DOUBLE GAMEWEEK

This is it, the final big push of the season for our Top Five. The planning and strategising is nearly at an end, a couple more rolls of the dice to secure green arrows. By saving their Bench Boost chip they have given themselves every chance of a strong finish.

Perhaps wary of the unpredictable nature of football Ville, with 14 Double Gameweekers, is backing players with an extra match to ride out any shock results. However, after being let down by Alvaro Negredo and Manolo Gabbiadini in recent Double Gameweeks, will ignoring the likes of Lukaku, King, Sigurdsson and co prove costly?

A first ever season outside the top 10,000 is at stake for FPL’s favourite Finn.

I think given the need to have all 15 starters Im going to swap with Monreal the obvious replacement as he should play even if Kosc returns.

the Bailly news though is tempting - no one will have any ManU def and they could do well.

        Will think on it.

yes Monreal seems safest. I could also get Alonso but maybe there's a rotation risk, though if one defender can get a double.gameweek score in a single gameweek it's him. Thanks

A question for you Jonty, Being a veteran of FF and with a couple of seasons of chips under our belts, what are your thoughts on the use of the 2nd WC/BB/DGW late in the season? My ranking seems to have suffered a small amount over the last 2 seasons and I'm beginning to think it might be due to holding out for the DGW. Even though my team wasn't in a disastrous state I think having just used my WC that I could now do with a couple more months to get the full benefit. Given that the majority of my rivals used theirs Feb/March yet still have 12-13 DGW players this week makes me think next season I might follow suit. Also a quick look at the teams at the very top pre WC the majority seems to have used there WC earlier. Interesting to see how they all fair from now to the end of the season.

I think on this season and last season's evidence the chips and later wildcard benefits the patient.

Already we are seeing that those that held onto the wildcard for use in GWK 36 have prospered - I expect the same with a bench boosted GWK 37 team based on that wildcard.

Same happened last year - alot of veterans ranks shot up due to patience with the wildcard and using it around dgwks.
I hated the second wildcard in January - My team was usually pretty good around that time and it felt like a waste to wildcard it around. Same this year- even though my overall rank was poor - I was turning it around in December and January with just normal transfers.

The change I'd like to see though is a pre and post xmas BB and TC - like the wildcard.

Currently the success of BB and TC revolves around dgwks. I think it would add an interesting element to the game if we had to use TC and BB before xmas as well as having them for DGWKs.

I agree completely with your view on the old January WC, I've not even used it some seasons or just used it for 2-3 transfers.

Having had a similar season to you, close to joining your millionaire league and now up to 120k, I feel I just lost steam just over a month ago when some wild carded. I've just seen a trend in my ML's (not sure if this extends to the whole game) where some have stolen a march with March/early April WC's, to the point where I don't think my DGW WC will help catch.

Whether it's good planning or luck with the fixtures, these teams have a decent amount of DGW players reducing the impact of my wildcard.

Are we looking at the big, high point scoring impact of the late WC, rather than the slow long lasting slightly earlier one?

Looking at the top 10 overall, March and early April WC's look to have worked, we will see if the late WC'ers make a come back.

    Cheers, as always, TM.

I think there hasn't been a live HoF update for a few weeks, but I imagine we're all pretty close up there based on this info. After Week 37 it could be anyone (Ville on for a late surge, as Jonty suggests).

My hit for Costa ended up costing me 1 whole English point, so the agonising over Sane, or Erik or the hit for Costa proved basically irrelevant.

Got lucky with Stephens' bench points. I knew Gabriel was a risk and couldn't afford anything more, so took the risk, but he'll have to go for GW37.

That's what a bench is for I guess. You've been unlucky at times with your bench this season, so due some good fortune. The law of large numbers in evidence perhaps.

Well done on reaching the cup semi too. Yes the next HoF update will be fascinating, close at the top.

I've got two dilemmas ahead of the deadline; Kos > ? and/or Siggy > Sane. Both would be for a hit having got Kompany for Valencia as my FT.

If Kos is injured then he has to go I feel but will he miss one or two games?

Also with City looking strong should I get Sane to add to Jesus - a double gameweek vs Swansea's single gameweek, making it more of a -2.

      And who to captain?

      As always plenty to ponder.

        Thanks, TM,

Just back from football so now a 'frantic' 40ish minutes making my last changes.

I haven't seen your whole team, but if it's in good shape then yes I would get rid of Kos, just because if you're BB you've got to try to give yourself a chance of 30 games from it in a DGW, to state the obvious. Clearly, he could do well in the second game (or indeed both) but it's an odd DGW with this mix of teams who have stuff to play for, teams on form, teams with easy fixtures etc.

Anyone who looks back next week and says "Obviously Sanchez (or KDB) (or Jesus) (or Kane) (etc.) was the best option." is talking out of their hat. Any/ all of them could have a flyer so I think it is a nice week to just go with your gut - I don't think any amount of research and stats will give a clear answer with so many variables.

Is that me sitting on the fence again?

Yakult advice I'd call it. I'm hoping my gut is in good working order 😉

Looks like I will have 3 SGWers. Don't really want to take any more than a -8 to reduce that further. Captain choice between Sanchez, Jesus and Kane. Currently on the Arsenal man.

Thank you for your thoughts, and good luck with your moves this week.

Went mad and took a -0 to replace Gabriel with Gibbs. Out of control.

I have a soft spot for King and, to a lesser extent, Smith, so kept them both plus Holgate. Could probably have swapped Holgate for Holding, but hey (if you pardon the aspirants).

Couldn't have been much worse a start to the gameweek for those of us with Holgate, Hazard and Costa but no Chelsea defence! Certainly, the FFS cup-semi is looking challenging (given he had Azpil).

That said, looking at the ownership stats in the top 10k, I have a feeling it may well be quite a neutral week for me whatever happens. I'd quite like KDB to stay quiet though.

Out and about today but will catch up on the results with interest.

only very small differences between the teams. In the battle for Live HoF number 1, between you and Graeme it comes down to Alonso + Monreal + JWP vs Smith + Gibbs + Eriksen. Jay also has Alonso with Pedro and Anichebe, Ville with Gabbi, Alli, Kone, Brunt and Fletcher. All San(c)hez.

Fascinating analysis of the WC, TM.

How did your 12 point hit work out?

I'm debating whether to save a FT this week, or go on the offensive with a -8!

    Current team:

    Jakupovic Pickford
    Alonso Stephens Holding Holgate Maguire
    Sanchez Hazard Alli Sane King
    Kane Jesus Gabbiadini

    1ft 0.5 itb.

I don't think that with 4 SGW's, I'm making best use of the BB chip. However I can't afford to do just Jaku - Caballero. I'm also utterly convinced Hazard is only getting 70 mins over this DGW, so I think he is expendable.

That leads me to Jaku, Hazard and possibly Maguire out in order to bring in Caballero, Fabregas and possibly Monreal for -4, or -8. What do you reckon? Any thoughts, MPP? Congratulations on the fantastic season!

my -12 was good with Cech, Sanchez and Kos all doing better than the players they replaced. Feels good for such a big move to pay off instantly.

Having promoted Swansea's FPL worth I'm now not sure if SGW Siggy will do better than DGW Sane, considering a final hit of the season (I've said that before!).

Well I think it is a risk to get rid of Hazard. Another factor in my thinking about Sane is will Leicester and WBA be as poor as Palace. I don't think so. You will need a double clean sheet from Caballero to make it work I think. But it does look tempting. Fab a good option and Monreal too. Just don't get upset if Hazard scores!

Good team though and I understand you wanting more DGWers to get more from your BB. Tricky. Not much help I feel

Congrats on the -12, that was a big call and I'm glad it worked out for you, and sets you up well for the final 2 weeks aswell.

I think Siggy's probably good for 6-8 points or so. Add in the cost of a hit and Sane needs 10-12 to break even. Assuming he plays twice that's only 1 goal and a clean sheet point in 2 fixtures. I don't think either will be as bad as Palace but it looks like Leicester will be missing their best 2 CB's, and WBA not very good away from home. City are also pretty sure to have something to play for until the end of the season, whereas Swansea could wrap up safety this weekend...

Yeah on the face of it I think its a risk, but Hazard hasn't been as brilliant away from home, is always subbed, will be facing a WBA out to spoil the party and has no chance of playing v Watford if title is won tonight. Whereas Fab can get a return from only 10 mins on the pitch, and if started v Watford could run riot I feel, like he did v Boro.

Haha if Haz scores I just have to take it on the chin! And learn from it haha. Cheers, no its good helpful advice, thank you 🙂

i like your persuasive argument for Sane over Siggy, thank you.

Caballero is a good pick, a definite improvement on Jaku. I agree Hazard hasn't been as great away from home, definitely a brave move but perhaps the right one. Good luck if you go for it.

No problem 🙂 One factor I didn't mention also is that Sunderland appeared v Hull to be somewhat liberated having been relegated. Could be a tougher game for Swansea than they think.

Yeah its so annoying I couldn't do just Jaku to Caballero, I was 0.1 short! Looking back at price rises I missed and thinking what might have been haha!

I think I'm going to go for it. I weighed up "best case", "worst case" and "most likely case" pointswise for the players involved in each of their fixtures. Taking hits into account, I think the rewards outweigh the risks according to my analysis. I'm pressing the button!

Spot on with your Sane/Siggy advice. Thank you, currently one point up with a match to go 🙂 I hope your combo move works out, if only Monreal hadn't hit the woodwork!

No worries! Just sorry sane didn't get more points last night! Bonus though is that sane still has something to play for in his last match, whereas siggy doesn't now.

The combo move has worked out 🙂 players I got rid of got 5 between them (!), ones I bought in contributed 21 (-8), so I'm 8 points up overall. Currently on 146 (-8), so going well so far! Broke into the top 100k for the first time ever last night too,and still in the hunt in my mini leagues 🙂

Well done breaking into the top 100K!

Yeah I'm pretty happy having Sane now, the trouble this week is who to sell... I would like to get a Liverpool player, Hazard to Coutinho seems the obvious move but Chelsea playing Sunderland at home, in any other week you'd want to own Hazard. Sanchez - not selling him, King likewise (also don't have funds to do a straight swap with Cout), Sane I want to keep, Eriksen... maybe Eriksen (have Kane) but he's just been rested so should play on Sunday. Feels a total lottery this week.

                Cheers!

I ended up staying in the top 100k, delighted with that! Best season to date! Also managed to win the LMS league I was involved in, and placed well in a couple of mini leagues, so lots of prizes to be enjoyed now over the summer which is nice!

Congratulations on your 5k season, an amazing achievement! Getting over 100 to finish off is doing it in style too 🙂 ditching king for Lallana turned out to be an inspired move!

Thank you! I was torn between him and Pedro so I could have gained an extra point, nonetheless I'm over the moon to finish in top 5,000 😀

Congrats on your top 100k finish and LMS win, it feels good to finish well doesn't it? 🙂

Amazing stuff 🙂 Thank you very much, it does indeed! I tend to finish seasons better than I start, but this season really took that to extremes!

The LMS was outrageous drama. I was 2 points up with about 20 mins to go, then Fabregas assisted to put me 5 clear - seemingly home and dried. Only for Ben smegging Davies to pop up with the first goal of his life at the death to put my opponent 1 point ahead, that feeling of dread set in....only for me to be saved by the last kick of the league season - Batshuyai's second goal assisted by Fabregas! Ended up winning by a single point. Almost had a heart attack!

Will there be a GW38 top 5 HOF review? 🙂

I think Arsenal have the best clean sheet prospects, so Gibbs or Holding?

All the Top Five have left the armband on Sanchez. Jesus is the only other player in all five teams.

    Ville: Gabriel > Brunt
    Marlen: (-4) Lukaku + Gibson > Jesus + Kompany
    Peter: Gabriel > Gibbs
    Steve: (-4) Benteke + Townsend > Jesus + Albrighton
    David: (-4) Hazard + Barnes > King + Jesus

    Ville: 1x SGWer - Holgate
Marlen: 3x SGWers - Benteke, Can, Mawson
Peter: 3x SGWers - King, Smith, Holgate
Steve: 2x SGWers - Zaha, Chambers
David: 4x SGWers - Lukaku, King, Zaha, Holgate

    Hi All,

I don't have time to get an article ready before today's deadline, so I will post a link later tonight/tomorrow for the Gameweek 37 review. Dramatic week for the top five, as for most of us!
