Expectations were high for Spurs’ Dele Alli entering the 2016/17 campaign.

On the back of an outstanding debut season, which yielded 10 goals and 12 assists in Fantasy Premier League (FPL), the midfielder was handed a price tag of 8.5.

Following a slow start, he finished as the second-highest scoring player in the game, with a 225-point haul more than enough for Alli to claim a spot in our Team of the Season for the second successive year.

The Statistics

Perhaps in part as a result of England’s disappointing Euro 2016 campaign, Alli struggled at the beginning of the season, blanking in his first three appearances.

He did register three goals and an assist in his following five starts, but by Gameweek 13, Alli’s price had dropped to 8.1, with just 183,688 managers retaining him in their squad.

It was over the festive period that Alli’s season began to take off, with a goal in the 2-1 win over Burnley in Gameweek 17 followed by three consecutive braces, seeing the midfielder average 13.25 points per match over that spell.

Those eye-catching performances inevitably saw Alli’s FPL ownership and price shoot up, with the attacker found in over 1,200,000 squads by Gameweek 24, with his value by this stage hitting 8.9.

He produced another scintillating run of form between Gameweeks 26 and 33, registering five goals and four assists, and he ended the campaign with a seventh double-figure haul of the season in the 7-1 demolition of Hull City.

The 21-year-old’s price peaked at 9.2 during the final weeks of a campaign in which he delivered 18 goals and 11 assists.

Alli didn’t fare too well in terms of bonus points though, managing only 17, compared to 30 for his Spurs team-mate Christian Eriksen.

In terms of his underlying statistics, he ranked fourth among FPL midfielders for shots inside the box, with 59, and joint-fourth for shots on target (43), with his goal threat key to his success as a Fantasy asset.

The Prospects

Alli is likely to enter 2017/18 as one of the most desirable midfielders in FPL.

Building on the 166 points he accrued in 2015/16, he is now recognised as one of the leading attacking midfielders in the Premier League and looks certain to be the subject of another initial price rise next season.

He could well come in around the 9.0 to 10 mark, likely to place him as one of the most expensive midfielders behind Arsenal’s Alexis Sanchez and Chelsea’s Eden Hazard – providing the Chilean isn’t re-classified as a forward.

After mounting a title challenge during the 2015/16 campaign, when they eventually finished third with 70 points, Mauricio Pochettino’s side improved to second with an impressive 86 points this time around.

They were also the highest scoring team with 86 goals, producing more goals attempts (669) than any other club.

In Alli, Eriksen and Golden Boot winner Harry Kane, Spurs boast one of the most devastating attacks in the top flight, and with another year of experience under his belt, there’s every chance Alli will be able to kick on further next season.

One of the running narratives throughout the season was the debate over who out of Alli and Eriksen was the stronger Fantasy asset.

Both players averaged 6.1 points per match, with the Dane finishing seven points behind Alli in the overall FPL standings on 218 points.

When assessing their underlying statistics, it’s Eriksen who leads a lot of the key categories.

He created 112 chances, more than any other FPL midfielder, with Alli managing just 52.

Eriksen also produced more goal attempts (133) than any other FPL midfielder – Alli registered 92 – although as already alluded to, he did shine in terms of close-range efforts.

That battle between the pair looks set to rumble again next season, with the duo likely to remain among the highest scoring midfielders in the game.

One issue that Spurs will have to overcome is the move to Wembley – a ground where they managed just win in five matches this season.

But with this young Spurs side maturing year by year, there’s every expectation we’ll once again be turning to their leading Fantasy assets in our droves.

Alli will certainly be among them, although with Kane likely to be a key target for many FPL bosses when drawing up their Gameweek 1 squads, he could still struggle to attract big investment.

That could even mean that he starts the campaign as he did the 2016/17 – as a surprise early-season differential.

How could that be clear? Depends on prices. I want Butland but not if he's 5m. I'll probably start with a 4.5 keeper and 4.0 fodder and then reassess on WC.

Good part is the amount of options available this time:
Heaton, Butland, Pickford, premium goalies, Begovic etc.
Last season was De gea, Pickford jaku or Heaton. Not more than that.

Butland at 4.5 is the ultimate one. I won't hesitate to get him. And for the bench it would be a 4 priced starter. Looking at Brighton and Huddersfield for it.

They underachieved in goals scored and conceded, but the performed strongly in terms of chances created and conceded.

          Check this:

          http://statsbomb.com/2017/05/what-has-happened-to-southampton/

Quote: "As it currently stands, Southampton are in the bottom 20 in conversion rate and bottom 10 in save rate of teams since 2009… they’ve just been exceedingly unlucky, especially in defence. Until this season, all the public goalkeeping data available suggested that Fraser Forster was a fine enough shot stopper, and this season he’s just been putrid. Something resembling A NORMAL SEASON FROM HIM and there wouldn’t be a need for articles like this to surface. The more seasons we witness, the more likely we will see weird outliers at both ends, a list that Southampton exist on. Until very recently [in this season], they were flirting with bottom 10 levels of conversion on both sides of the pitch, which NO ONE in the Opta era has ever accomplished." (my emphasis)

That's compared to all season of all teams since 2009. This was uniquely unlucky season, and it is expectable that they do much better next season, similarly to Liverpool after last season, except that Southampton 2016-2017 had much tougher luck than Liverpool 2015-2016. Already just Forster playing like a bang average GK would have won them a lot of points, and there are good reasons to believe he is better than average.

Finishing 8th was very well managed through this level of misfortune and doing positive business in transfers, so I would build on continuity and keep Puel who fits their general strategy well. If this is the worst that it gets, and their luck just couldn't have been harsher, then that's very encouraging.

Interesting ... this puts Sou assets on the radar. Still fancy Tuchel over Puel though ... not sure the players are responding to him.

              • 12 Years

Returning to this, I'm not in the know about any responding or not, but for most of the season they played well, dominated almost every match despite being often on paper imo worse. And this with a tactic visibly different to last season. So, at least they did what was asked - aside from, you know, scoring and stopping shots. 😉 IF it has happened that the players have abandoned the manager, then it usually is easier to change the manager. On the other hand, in Southampton's case they might be selling these particular players anyway, being a seller club.

For me, it's not obvious between Tuchel and Puel. You're probably judging them on the basis of Tuchel's games against PL clubs in EL, and Puel's most unfortunate possible Southampton season. If you look at their history, Puel is actually more proven and certain value, and probably more suitable to Southampton. Tuchel is much younger, however, and a sort of the name of the future - maybe, the court is still out on him after the last season raised new doubts instead of confirming to the good sense. But if Southampton can't offer the project that would fit Tuchel's ambitions, then there's no sense in singing the name for the future just to seem sign somewhere else after two seasons.

Tuchel has an ambitious and attractive tactical setup with high pressing (his real speciality) combined with patiently looking for a top scoring chance instead of taking early shots (the difference he made at Dortmund compared to Klopp whose teams shoot at sight). Which I like a lot!

But the tactics he played at Dortmund, and largely at Mainz too, may be unviable at Southampton against the top table PL clubs. I know, you think of the way he thrashed Tottenham, but that was with Dortmund. Southampton's difference in talent compared to PL top-6 is just too much.

Puel is tactically flexible and adaptive, he uses what resources he can find. He has a history of playing CL knockouts, even with smaller clubs (Lille), a top-4 finish at best (with Lyon). He pulled poor Nice and Lille teams up to the top places in France by signing basically just own academy players (a lot of them), lower league players, and free agents. So always kind of beating the odds with the underdog, building with given resources despite his players being sold. (Exception, Lyon). Southampton has that kind of model, drawing from their own academy and other promising players, and selling expensively.

Puel will do that, but Tuchel wasn't happy with that strategy in Dortmund and left the team fighting with sporting director, chairman and head scout. He wasn't happy that they sold his core players and signed mostly youngsters, whose value will grow, but with who he didn't feel like he could challenge Bayern for the title right away. The allegations that he also lost the dressing room seem true after this interview:

              http://www.kicker.de/news/fussball/dfbpokal/startseite/679019/artikel_schmelzers-verbale-ohrfeige-fuer-tuchel.html

He had also fallen with the Mainz lead. And in the end, his success at Dortmund was arguably quite mitigated, despite the promises of the first season progress.

Despite his exciting tactical approach, and partly because of it, I'm not convinced Southampton is the right type of project for him. I'd see it better putting him in a big club with massive resources and great freedom to the manager to use those resources, and see what comes out of that. A club wealthier and higher in the "food chain" than Dortmund.

It's hard to say before the summer transfer market is over, because with the amount of money in PL even now bad looking teams can improve significantly over summer.

Even Huddersfield could pull a Watford and turn their team into a PL side with wise recruitment over one summer, looking for quality players who for some reason don't have their place in top clubs now, or who play in foreign clubs that can't match the salary that Huddersfield can give with their PL money.

Hull probably wouldn't be in Championship now if they made their January signings already in July.
