Moving Target

Moving Target – Frank De Boer

Crystal Palace named their third manager in the space of six months earlier in the week, appointing Frank De Boer on a three-year deal at Selhurst Park.

Arriving in the English top-flight for the first time, the Dutchman will take time to assess his options before investing in the transfer market, although he was quick to talk up a pair of Eagles’ attackers in particular:

“I want to know everyone first; that for me is very important. I have my ideas because I have watched videos on the squad so I might know there might be a player that can be interesting for us, but I firstly want to see everyone, and then we can make decisions. We have a very solid squad with some very good players, with Benteke the most famous as well as Zaha.”

Palace are now hoping for a period of stability after Sam Allardyce – who replaced Alan Pardew midway through 2016/17 – chose to retire at the end of the season having steered them to safety.

The team has had to scrap for survival in successive campaigns, so chairman Steve Parish is looking for De Boer to install more consistency in his side’s displays:

“Frank was really engaging and had put a lot of work into getting ready for our meeting to cover his playing and management career. We both spoke about a revolution that we need here and how we can change from the pattern of this club over the last two seasons. Third from bottom on home form but eighth or ninth on away form has been our record, but we want to get away from that and look at a way of getting the best out of our players.”

The History

A product of the Ajax youth system, De Boer’s playing career began back in 1988. He spent 11 successful years with the Dutch outfit, and a further four at Barcelona, before brief stints at Galatasaray and Rangers preceded a switch to Qatar. He also played 112 times for Holland, retiring in 2006.

The Dutchman’s coaching career started a year later, returning to Ajax to take charge of their youth team. Following a spell as assistant manager for the Holland senior side, De Boer’s first managerial appointment came in December 2010, when he replaced Martin Jol as Ajax boss.

His impact was immediate. De Boer steered Ajax to four successive league titles for the first time in their history, but chose to resign after failing to clinch a fifth on the final day of 2015/16.

He was appointed as Inter Milan manager last August, but it’s fair to say that he failed to translate his Dutch success to Serie A. De Boer lasted just 85 days at the San Siro, dismissed with his side sitting twelfth in the table on the back of five wins, two draws and seven losses in 14 matches.

The Prospects

De Boer’s formative years at Ajax and Barcelona mean he’s very much an advocate of the possession-based 4-3-3 formation, with quick, direct wingers and full-backs pushing forward from deep.

That’s a little at odds with Palace’s recent approach – the Selhurst Park side have registered just 44% possession in each of the last two seasons – so they may need time to adjust to their new manager’s demands.

Certainly, from comments made by Parish, De Boer has arrived to enact a change in style.

“We need to find a way of breaking down teams that give us the ball. The technical detail is Frank’s world, but if teams give us the ball, typically we lose. If we give them the ball we beat them, and that’s top teams as well.”

De Boer is adaptable, though, and has been known to tailor his tactics according to the opposition. When looking to find a way back into matches or gain control in the final third, he has occasionally operated with a false nine as the central attacker and also used central midfielders out wide in the front three.

At Inter, he also trialled a 4-2-3-1, and their average of 30 crosses per match under his guidance indicates that the new manager could alter his approach accordingly to suit Palace’s main men.

At the back, Mamadou Sakho’s return to parent club Liverpool means our assessment of Palace’s defensive prospects is on hold for now. The Selhurst Park outfit mustered just two clean sheets in the first 25 Gameweeks before the Frenchman’s winter arrival helped marshal them to four in the subsequent six.

Questioned on his plans, De Boer was somewhat non-committal on the likelihood of another deal for the centre-half:

“He was certainly impressive and important last season, but we will look at what we need. First of all, I need to see all the players and get a good opinion on them. I know a lot about the team, but it’s different when a new manager comes in. Already I have my opinion, but I need to see them live to see if my opinion changes.”

With the freedom to raid forward, though, Patrick Van Aanholt could prove one of the main beneficiaries of De Boer’s appointment.

The left-back notched five times last term – adding to six strikes from the 2015/16 season – and placed in the top three defenders for shots (34) and efforts on target (13) last term. Despite earning just a single assist, the Dutchman’s total of 34 key passes was seventh among defenders.

Further up the field, Wilfried Zaha and Christian Benteke look set to remain the chief source of Fantasy interest.

Zaha will be hoping to build on the back of last season’s 149 points, which saw him finally step up as a Fantasy asset thanks to seven goals and 11 assists. But one goal – and seven blanks – in the final nine Gameweeks indicates that his attacking edge was blunted late on, with Allardyce’s team tightening up to grind out results.

Instead, the wide man will be looking to replicate the form that produced a goal or assist in six of seven appearances under Pardew between Gameweek 9-15. Double-figure hauls in wins over Chelsea and Arsenal underline his fixture-proof appeal, with the winger also returning points against Manchester City, Liverpool and West Brom.

Andros Townsend could also profit from a change of manager. The former Spurs wide man bettered Zaha for both shots (56 to 49) and key passes (51 to 38), despite returning just three goals and seven assists. However, a 75% pass completion record indicates that, of the two wingers, his style could be more at odds with De Boer’s ethos.

Palace have placed in the top two teams for total crosses in each of the last couple of seasons, and their acquisition of Benteke last summer may ultimately be the determining factor in De Boer’s approach.

The Belgian’s lack of mobility, in addition to his aerial prowess, is likely to ensure they continue that steady delivery from the flanks.

Benteke’s tally of 15 goals in his first season at Selhurst Park once again underlined an ability to produce the goods, despite playing for a struggling side. The Belgian target man – who served up 42 goals in three seasons at Villa – ranked top for headed efforts (49) and joint-top for headed goals (seven) in 2016/17, and has consistently delivered when afforded regular pitch-time.

Pre-season will afford us more time to assess the new manager’s impact and intentions, but De Boer’s charges could find their way into our opening squads if they can show summer form.

A favourable trio of home encounters with Huddersfield Town, Swansea City and Southampton, in addition to a trip to Burnley in the first five rounds of fixtures, hand the Eagles an opportunity to build momentum before the schedule stiffens from Gameweek 6.

A colossal 55 points from Ake last season.

He is right at the bottom of page 3 of 6 when you sort defenders by total score.

If he costs anymore than £4.5m, it will be an outrage.

Official FPL needs to shed some light on how it decides price changes!

I'm angry there is no transparency on how prices are decided. What are the factors involved? Is it a couple of blokes in a room who decide? Everyone is clutching at straws, guessing, but no one knows anything for sure.

Probably is just a few blokes sat around a table, but who cares? It's not as if they are deciding how much tax you pay, or how much petrol costs. Fantasy Football is all about buying players you think are good value and not buying players you think are bad value, no?

If we don't need to know and if it is not important, why did FPL break down and reveal how bonus points are awarded? Why do we have transparency there but not on how price changes and players positions are decided?

I've explained previously - in previous seasons ISM have subtly tweaked the algorithm mid-season, sometimes several times, to slow or speed the rises.

So, if they publish a set criteria or the "rules" for price rises, they then remove that ability to change things mid-season to "correct" things that they think might be warping the market.

As a result, the algorithm remains in the background and is subject to change according to transfer traffic.

Ah, so it is an algorithm, not a committee. Can you speak in broad terms about the things that influence the algorithm? For example, how does it know that Ake has moved to Bournemouth and is likely to get more game time?

Ah sorry...preseason I'm not clear on the exact process. Last seasons tallies, competition for starts, relative prices vs other players and opinion all comes all come into it - what you would expect.

Ake will surely be 5.0 based on his ppm at Bournemouth.

This. The fact that he's gone from a Chelsea player with no hope of getting on the pitch, to a nailed on record signing for Bournemouth, has to be reflected in his price. It's pretty blindingly obvious tbh.

That position at the bottom of page three of total score is false, he would have been much higher if he wasn't recalled by Chelsea. Given that he's now nailed and has obvious attacking threat I'm expecting him to be 5.0m.

Absolutely no hope of him being 4.5. Daniels and Cook started at 5.0 last season, Ake will probably start at this too.

I think Daniels will be 5.5...based on last season and the season before that form...also 5.0 def that do well often go up.

Effectively that prices him out for many. Maybe not me though. I love him so.

4.5 for Ake seems reasonable based on last season's points...but depends whether FPL look at that short time when he was a regular with Bournemouth. If we think he'll start - then it would make sense to price him at 5.0 based on that small window of knowledge we have of him being a Bou starter.

If Ake is 4.5, his ownership will be high. Why do you want the game to be easier for virgins? Why do you want teams to be more similar? If everyone gets Ake, everyone has a spare 0.5 or 1M to spend on better players elsewhere, and it takes away an interesting decision about whether to spend 4.5 on a defender or 5.0 or more, because Ake's value will be too good to ignore.

I say this about people's price wish lists almost every day. And I'm sure the FPL towers take these things into account, so I'm not worried. Having said that, as Jarvis said, if he's 4.5 then I'll simply pick him, with no complaints, given that I clearly think that represents good value. So long as I don't go for a premium option in that slot instead.

Fantasy Football Scout daily hot topic

If I was Frank De Boer I’d……

Frank De Boer enjoyed an impressive 60% win rate with Ajax, but at Inter was found wanting.

A look at the win rate of the Premier League’s best ever managers shows that he may have his work cut out to enjoy success at Palace.

Among the seven managers that have a higher success rate than FDB in the Premier League all achieved that success at one or more of Manchester United, Manchester City or Chelsea.

If you were Frank De Boer taking over Palace what would you do to ensure they win more matches.

With just seven clean sheets last time out (joint third worst) defence looks a priority. Although with six of those coming under Big Sam is the ground work already there for improvement?

Palace’s 50 goals and 439 goal attempts puts them mid table – which arguably is where they should be. Perhaps he doesn’t need to take drastic action in attack?

And also – considering his short lived time at Inter do you think he could be among the favourites for the axe, in the cut throat world of Premier League management, should he not build on the progress Allardyce made?

Sounds like he likes a possession based game and from the very little I watched of Ajax, when he was linked with Everton, it involved a very slow build up from back to front. I think his signings will be key to his success as they look weak in midfield especially.

you don't hire someone with such am ingrained football 'philosophy' and make him play Allardyce tactics.

Not saying FdB's tactics and style will necessarily be a success though either. I don't think Palace have the quality of players to make it work.

They need to keep Sakho for one. Wingers need to help the FBs a bit more. Cabaye and Milivojevic are vital and have keep their form over 38 games.

Zaha/Townsend need to be more decisive in the final 3rd to help Benteke thrive. A backup striker is need (different to Tekkers though for tactical varience).

Basically they need to play like they did vs Chelsea, Liverpool and Arsenal (in the 2nd half of the season) more often than they do like vs Sunderland and Man City.

Looks like defence is key. To be fair in terms of goals Palace are at the expected level of a mid table side, and excelling if you think they are relegation material.

Sakho - would be good - but FDB also needs to work out whether five at the back works - they do have the personnel for that, esp with PVA. Or if he goes 4-4-2. Once that's sorted Palace could do really well under FDB - except of course when they get soundly thrashed twice by Brighton 🙂

He is with a back 4 which is normally deployed vs weaker teams.

          Loris

With Ake now back at Bournemouth, Zouma in the only experienced defensive cover for Chelsea's regular back 5. Surely Conte's going to have to make at least 3 defensive signing this summer, to cover their increased fixture schedule.

Zouma might go out on loan as well. So make that 4. For all his supposed brilliance, Conte has been strange with his man management. Ake and maybe Zouma and Matic gone. Costa dumped via sms.

Why he sold Oscar is a mystery as well as they are short of players with UCL coming next season.

Oscar was good business for the money they got for him, especially as imho he was overrated, and he was hardly used at Chelsea, with other players such as Fabregas and Willian more effective than him when needed to fill in - Matic is slightly odd, maybe there's something we don't know there, as for Costa, clearly Conte hasn't forgotten getting messed around by him in winter, kept his powder dry until the title was won, and presumably as soon as he knew Lukaku was done deal (assume it must be) then told Costa where to get off - although if Conte was a pragmatist he would surely keep him - but some people you just don't cross, the line in the sand was crossed, and Conte ain't having it

I know hindsight is 20/20 but is £52m good business when you then have to find someone to replace Oscar for even more money since prices are going through the roof? Oscar should have been loaned rather.

from a business perspective getting that money for a part-time sub was great, even from a footballing perspective think Fabregas/Willian better picks, and Pedro really plays that attacking mid role much better - i think with Conte's style of play he'll be looking for a different type of player to Oscar anyway, which he'll need the money for - my view might be swayed by the fact i never really rated Oscar in the premier league, i wouldn't want him at Arsenal

I think he suffers from the same thing as Ozil tbh. He has terrible body language.

I guess I'm seeing it from the opposite view as I really rate Oscar and would take him over all our mids except Ozil and Sanchez.

But you are right though, Conte doesnt rate him so he is good business in that context

For the squad to be happy and working well together, it's important that everybody plays or feel that there chance will come at some point. I think offloading a couple of players made sense for Chelsea last season, they looked like a tight gang and had a core of players that played regularly plus some youngsters who were (reasonably) happy to be part of the squad. Now with CL, it becomes more of a problem. They can either go at it the Barca way and have 11-15 players that play 60 matches a season, or like the Real Madrid of Zidane with rotation making sure 22 players are used regularly. I think Chelsea will struggle a bit as they don't seem to have the squad for any of those options as of now.

No way this squad copes with the workload unless they add more bodies.

RLC, Kenedy, Chabeloah are not good enought to fill in when the 1st teamers are injured. They might be good enough for the odd game only.

Zouma didnt play that much and might be still gaining strength/confidence from the knee injury. So he cant thrown in the deep end yet.

Is Aké and Begovic enough of a defensive upgrade to make Bournemouth a top eight candidate or is it deeper than that? Is their playing style just not suitable for a side to be more results based?

I certainly like his football as a viewer but this sort of playing style will never prosper against better attacking sides.
You can't play an open game and expect to outscore any side which has more firepower than you. He'd do great at a top team with this playing style I think but at Bournemouth he needs to show more flexibility if he wants them to reach the next level.

I do think he realises that and tries to rectify it. But I like his commitment to what he believes in. As you say, a tweak in the approach in bigger games should take the team to the next level.

I agree but I think it is slightly unfair for him. When Pep, LVG, Mourinho etc. say they won't change their philosophies, they are called geniuses. When Howe does the same thing, he is inflexible.

It goes back a long way.
Many years ago, when I was still at primary school, I was in a harmless little gang who all adopted Red Indian sounding names (which is what Native Americans were then called) - like William Brown (Just William)'s gang called themselves The Injuns.
I was given the name Red Lightning, probably because of my hair colour.
The gang didn't last long but I liked the name, so when I started playing fantasy football it seemed an appropriate one for a Liverpool supporter.

They were good last year and have made 3 solid signings in Ake, Begovic and Defoe. All three can go straight in a starting 11, and they have moved early for them. I expect them to end up between 7th and 10th place, depending on the form of particularly Everton and Southampton.

As an offensively minded Howe guides them, there is a big need to get some sort of DM to manage the defense. I don't see it now. Ake is a solid signing, played well last year for the Cherries. But he too, is attack minded, fitting in with Howe's style. Begovic is an upgrade between the sticks, but their are still defensive concerns. I don't see them any higher than they finished last year in 9th.

Its best to stay away from Dier/Son Davies/Rose Trippier/Walker imo. This is how I expect the Spurs team to lineup when everyone is fit.

(All caps being the core players to play the majority of games)

      VS weak opponents
      4/2/3/1

      LORIS
      Walker TOBY VER Rose
      WANYAMA DEMBELE
      ALLI ERIKSEN Son
      KANE

      VS strong opponents
      3/4/3

      LORIS
      Dier TOBY VER
      Walker WANYAMA DEMBELE Rose
      ALLI ERIKSEN
      KANE

Exceptions would be CL rotation and injury which brings in Walker/Trippier and Davies/Rose combinations. I am staying away from all the non-core players even if they are cheaper by 1.0 compared to the regulars. We got lucky with the Rose injury and Walker situation last season

I don't want to write an essay what I think about this transfer saga but hopefully it will be all over soon. Either Arsenal fans
will have to move on or others. Ornstein ( https://twitter.com/bbcsport_david/status/880141934110662656 ) reported 2 days ago that there were no bids for Alexis yet so make of that what you will. Even if he stays the media will continue with speculations in winter transfer window (it's their job and I understand it). He has a good chance to become an Arsenal legend and I think he knows that. Signing a new and improved deal is the best case scenario, leaving us the worst.

I can see plenty of justification for Kane, Eriksen and Alli all being sub 7m what with their move to Wembley, i mean there's almost no point having those players, so i assume the suits at FPL towers will be pricing accordingly, also think Jesus should be 5.5m, after all City's signings he'll just be bench fodder

Some interesting info on Alexis Sanchez here.

He played the world cup in 2014, copa america 2015 (final) and 2016 (final) and now confederations cup 2017 (reached the final yet again).

In Sanchez's three seasons at Arsenal, their win percentage over their opening four matches of the season is just 41.7 per cent (five wins from 12 matches), while they win 59 per cent of the rest of their games.

In those 12 early-season games, Sanchez has scored just three goals - or once every four matches. In his remaining 91 Premier League appearances, he has 50 goals - or one every 1.82 matches.

There seems to be a trend that he starts the season slowly - maybe he is just too tired from the summer.

As per my comments above with Internal Error's post, I just won't be getting him. City have: KDB, Silva, Silva, Fernandinho, Toure, Jesus, Sterling, Sane, Gundogen, Sanchez and Kun who could reasonably expect to start and then Fernando and Delph who will be given the odd run about. So that's 11 to 13 players for 6 places. All these will be expensive players too. Too much of a lottery for my liking. If I spend 11m on a player, I expect him to start at the very least and I also expect returns.

Yes, if I spend that much on a player I expect him to be a captaincy candidate, which means I need to be confident he will normally start when not injured or suspended.

Yes. Don't forget the reputation he came in with, FA cup is not really is a cup worth mentioning. They won't make CL Semi's unless they tighten up defensively, you just can't score 3/4 goals against quality opponent.

I think so. If they sign Sanchez or Mbappe plus the defensive options they want then they will have spent over a quarter of a billion this summer so to not win the league and only equal the best finish they have had in Europe would be a failure and surely a sackable offence?

What people are forgetting are that if Alexis joins City they'll be one of the deadliest attacks in the PL, if they aren't already. Fixtures are favorable, and Alexis is probably the best player in the PL right now. I can't see myself not getting him, City will score plenty early doors. I certainly believe that rotation is being overhyped, I can't see him getting rotated at all in the first couple of months at least.

Dilution of attacking returns though. Sanchez isn't overly BP friendly compared to someone like Kun. If City win 3-0 and Sanchez gets 1 goal, high chance he'd get 0 bonus.

These days where big money contracts are tossed around, nothing would surprise me. I can see why Wenger would sell Alexis, because he walks next season. But to sell to stronger competition in the EPL makes one shake their head. Honestly, I don't care what jersey he wears next season.

Sanchez has basically just told Sky Sports News he wants to leave Arsenal. If you look at his quotes on their site, he says he's made up his mind where he wants to be next season. When asked where that will be, he says he can't say because he doesn't know where he'll end up. If he wanted to stay with Arsenal, his answer would have been much easier and less mysterious. Only if he wants to leave but isn't sure if they will sell him would he say that he can't be sure where he will play. And will Arsene sell him? Of course! £50m instead of nothing and the chance to blame the player's lack of loyalty like he did with Cesc, Toure, RVP, Adebayor, Clichy......

You are jumping to conclusions. Things like he said are typical when contract negotiations are ongoing. If he said he is definitely staying, what does that do to his negotiating power?
Also, the part in your post about "he can't say because he doesn't know where he'll end up," I have not seen that from any of the articles or posts I've seen about this interview. If you can point a source, then I can believe that you are not making this up.

Watched first 5, excellent but very quirky lots of class scenes. great acting, won't be everyone's cuppa tea..

Dying to go back to it, just had new nipper so viewing time limited, but definitely recommend sticking with gets better each episode albeit more weird

Just finished the book, which rambled along. God selection was quite poor given options available. TV series got great reviews though, I will watch it.

Watched the whole series - just finished this week. It's super-stylish and very strange. I have a background in mythology and loved it but I'd understand if some viewers come away thinking 'WTF???' But give it a go for sure.

I haven't read the book but I can see you'd follow it far better if you are familiar with the book.

Is there a chance that with the hugely inflated transfer prices that any clubs will actually finally use their youth development systems and reserve players, and say you know what, let's give these guys a chance, let's try to train them and coach them and give them a chance in the first team, afterall isn't that we built the youth academy.....a crazy dream i know, it'll never happen

sounds like he impressed at Milan. Whether Barce want him or plan to sell for profit is the question

It's really a no-brainer. He will be a good impact sub and can't reasonably expect to start, plus the way prices are going, they can sell him in a couple of seasons for two or three times what they paid even if he does nothing.

Are people actually expecting things to happen tomorrow? Or is it just as likely to happen any day after tomorrow until the window shuts?

just as likely to happen anytime, in fact there will be a lot of deals that are going to take some time to resolve, but there's probably a few done deals that are waiting for the window to happen before they are announced, so we might get one or 2 transfers announced over the weekend

Whether the window is open or not is irrelevant to an extent. It might speed up eventually, but around 20 deals have still been done regardless - some for big bucks. Officially opens tomorrow in Germany but that hasn't stopped ~60-70 deals from already being completed.

The significance of tomorrow is that a lot of contract up to 30th June will have expired. In practice that oughtn't make for big drama - players out of contract will still take touting themselves to the highest bidder.
