Moving Target

Moving Target – Michael Keane

Hot on the heels of the signing of Spanish forward Sandro Ramirez, Everton announced the arrival of Burnley defender Michael Keane for a fee that could rise to a club-record equalling £30 million.

The 24-year-old put pen to paper on a five-year contract, and becomes the Toffees’ sixth summer signing, along with Jordan Pickford, Davy Klaassen, Nathangelo Markelo, Sandro and Henry Onyekuru, although the latter will spend the 2017/18 season on loan at Anderlecht.

Speaking to the club’s official website, Everton manager Ronald Koeman revealed his high hopes for the England international:

“Michael was high among the players we wanted to bring to Everton this summer, and I’m delighted he is here at the club… I believe there is much more to come from Michael and that’s what makes his signing really exciting for me – we will see his development as a player along with the progression overall… It’s another really positive sign of the direction the club is moving in. He’s 24 years old, his best years are to come, he’s an England international, too, and I couldn’t be more pleased that he’s now a Blue.”

The History

Born in Stockport, Keane began his youth career at Manchester United, and made his professional debut as a substitute in a League Cup tie against Aldershot Town in October 2011.

He was handed a first start in the same competition a year later against Newcastle United, and also started in the next round against Chelsea, before being sent out on loan to Championship side Leicester City.

Keane made 22 appearances for the Foxes, scoring twice, before taking in further loan spells at Derby County and Blackburn Rovers in the second tier, with his spell at Ewood Park yielding three goals from 13 matches.

The defender then joined Burnley on loan for the first half of the 2014/15 Premier League campaign, and joined the Clarets on a permanent basis in January 2015 for an undisclosed fee.

He made 21 appearances during that season, but couldn’t prevent Sean Dyche’s side from avoiding relegation to the Championship.

Keane stayed at Turf Moor, though, and was a key figure in their title-winning season in 2015/16, registering five goals and three assists in 44 appearances, while also being named in the PFA Championship Team of the Year.

Last season, Keane once again starred for the Clarets as they maintained their top-flight status, producing two goals and one assist in 35 matches. He was also among the six nominees for the PFA Young Player of the Year.

Having represented the Republic of Ireland at U17 and U19 levels, Keane switched his allegiance to England, featuring 24 times at U19, U20 and U21 levels, before making his senior debut in a 1-0 friendly defeat to Germany in March on the back of his impressive club form.

The Prospects

After winning many admirers last season, leading to speculation surrounding a potential move to former side United, Chelsea or Liverpool, Keane’s signature represents something of a coup for the Toffees.

The 24-year-old, whose strengths include his calmness in possession and his ability to win aerial duels, should provide a major boost to the Everton rearguard, which has already been bolstered by the addition of goalkeeper Jordan Pickford.

Koeman’s side kept a pretty impressive 13 clean sheets last season, conceding 44 goals – a number only bettered by five teams.

Ashley Williams was the mainstay in defence, making 35 starts, while Phil Jagielka (25 starts) and Ramiro Funes Mori (16 starts) job shared as the preferred partner to the Welsh international

It’s likely that Keane will partner Williams in central defence if Koeman opts for a four-man backline, although he experimented with a three-man defence on occasion.

Looking at the underlying statistics from last season, Keane’s potential impact at both ends of the pitch is obvious.

He claimed fourth overall for Clearances, Blocks and Interceptions (CBI), with a total of 378 just behind Williams (382) in third spot.

The Toffees’ new boy was number one for successful aerial duels in 2016/17 – a tally of 149 was well ahead of Everton’s best defender Jagielka, with 88. His 65.6% aerial success rate was als higher than any Toffees defender and up markedly on Williams’ 57%.

Ranked third for touches in the box (65) among FPL defenders, Keane registered 22 attempts from inside the opposition area – just three shy of Marcos Alonso at the summit.

Last season, Williams and Jagielka came in at 5.0 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL), while full-backs Seamus Coleman and Leighton Baines came in at 5.5. Keane’s goal threat could mean he comes in at 5.5 this time around, yet his potential for points at both ends of the pitch could persuade many to earmark him as their weapon of choice in Koeman’s backline.

Should Romelu Lukaku depart Goodison Park this summer, Baines could be in the mix to take penalties, potentially boosting his appeal, although new boy Klaassen is also expected to come into consideration, having scored five of his seven spot-kicks for Ajax last term.

That situation will require monitoring during pre-season, then, along with the issue of who will start at right-back in the absence of the injured Coleman, with Mason Holgate or Jonjoe Kenny potentially providing a cut-price route should Koeman fail to recruit in that position.

But in any case, Everton’s brutal opening schedule (STO, mci, che, TOT, mun) means that there is likely to be little appetite to invest in their Fantasy assets in our initial squads.

The addition of Keane looks a significant coup for Everton, and with Idrissa Gueye and Morgan Schneiderlin in central midfield, there looks real potential for the Toffees to improve on the 13 shut-outs recorded last season.

Those opening fixtures should provide us with the information as to who will emerge as the go-to option, with the impressive Keane expected to be jostling for attention at the front of the queue.

If you had to pick one from each team? Who'd need to drop 0.5 to make you change your mind/choice?

    Arsenal - Cassette 10.5 Sanchez 12.5
    Chelsea - Hazard 12.0 Costa 10.0
    Liverpool - Mané 10.0 Coutinho 9.5 Salah 8.5
    Man Utd - Miki 8.5 Rashford 7.5 Martial 8.5 Pogba 8.0
    Man City - Jesus 10.5 Aguero 12.0 Sané 9.0
    Spurs - Kane 13.0 Alli 9.5 Eriksen 9.0

Eriksen at 9.0? If that happens I'll be in there quicker than a Mackem in Greggs.

Since one cant pick one from each team and still be able to build a viable fpl squad I'd choose these 4 and cover with defence.

      Heaton 5/Huddersfield GK 4.5 = 9.5

      Azpi 6 Valencia 6 Cedric 5
      Dawson 4.5 (B)Rosenior 4 = 25.5

      Eriksen 9.5 Mane 9 Sigurdsson 8 Tadic 7 Stanislas 6.5 = 40.5

      Lacazette 10 Jesus 10 (H)Quaner 4.5 =24.5

If Mane is 10.0-10.5 and the other Liverpool mids are 0.5-1.0 cheaper that would kill Mane for me tbh.

      A - Sanchez
      C - neither; I'm going for Pedro
L - midfield minefield. Poss Cout, prob monitor for a couple of GWs
MU - Pogba, poss Herrera if cheap
MC - another minefield, poss Jesus or Sane
S - Kane all the way

I can't say if 0.5m makes a critical difference until I see all the prices!

7.5 ppg after a couple of seasons around 5.5-5.6. Aguero had that 13 price after seasons at 5.5-6.0, never higher than 6.1 thinks I.

Kane looks to be a very risky investment at that price to me, he can be a slow starter and the Wembley factor could come into play.

Although risky there might be great dividends to he had by betting against Kane.

I'm not sure what is discussed here has an impact on what the price is going to be. I would be surprised to see him or anyone else for that matter above 13 to start.

On Kane, I may consider going without to begin with if his ownership is above say 50%. Risky and if he delivers, will have to get on board but I'm quite open to a few pot shots in the first few weeks

Would be very surprised if FPL didn't follow some of the discussion on here... we're our own worst enemies at times 😉

As above, RvP was 14 one season, whilst being far more injury -prone and with a much less consistent record.

Kane looks a prime candidate for Captain in three of the first five weeks too, which is rather overlooked as a factor

Earlier today someone posted links to the analysis of the last two seasons' price predictor analysis. Actual prices were slightly lower than the average of the predictions, if that's any indicator. Extremely close though. Only a couple of players were more than 0.5 away from the average.

Fair enough. Been to many sensible discussions on aspects of the game that they have missed then.

Take your point with RVP. With that tho, the game had very few heavy hitters back then, so the price was relevant to that seasons game. The way they have moved towards a more casual based game, too many big hitters highly priced might have a backward effect on the growth.

Last season was one of the toughest I've had in terms of budget and although I've never been against taking hits, I'm going into this season expecting to take a hit every other week

13-13.5 seems fair for a 2 time golden boot winner who has no competition for a starting berth.

At 14 they need to be lenient on other player prices imo (except Alli and Eriksen to restrict doubling up).

At 13 he starts gw1, at 14, I wont have him if it unbalances the team too much.

Not sure why but I'm backing Kane and Aguero to be the joint top priced players at 12.0 each. Sanchez probably the same. Would be surprised if Kane is 13.0 although history shows they're not scared of putting players that high.

Firmino's popularity will surely plummet if he is classified as a striker? (which I think he will)

He was overlooked by most last year for the likes of Coutinho and Mane despite being an 8.5 midfielder. Take a point away per goal plus clean sheets and he's not gonna be any more popular as a similar priced forward.

Firmly in the Sane and Jesus camp here, with Mane as Liverpool coverage.

Walker looks very much like leaving, but if he hasn't gone by fpl blast-off there's a chance Trippier could be priced down a bit (5.5 maybe). As clear favourite RB he would certainly be higher.

Yeah I doubt Walker will have left by the time the game opens next week so good chance we get a 5.5 Trippier.

      Cedric for sure.
I want to see if Milner and Moses are classified as defenders.
I will go through all the 4.5m defenders with a fine toothcomb to find the best 3-way rotation.

Tricky classifications. Moses wouldn't get a game anywhere other than fullback and played pretty much a full season there, so should be classed as a DEF IMO. Even he's replaced he'll be backup RWB. Milner's trickier. Would be amazed if Liverpool didn't sign another fullback.

Sure - I don't expect wither to be classified as defenders, but you asked who I'd CHECK. Even if I have one or both and they don't work out (Klopp buying a specialist LB, Alonso moving to the right), it will be an easy free transfer to switch them for my current first choices, Valencia and Cedric.

Quick calculation: forgetting baps, Moses would have got an extra 33 points for clean sheets, putting him 5th in the defenders scoring list, behind his Chelsea teammates and Walker. That's worth 6.5m. Milner an extra 39, putting him top of the tree.

Hmm, according to transfermarkt Brunt played 23 games as a MID last season and 10 in defence. Could be reclassified, then, depending on recruitment.

4 goals and 4 assists though, in a poor side. Solid.

Brunt played all over the shop, but more in midfield. He's so versatile I suspect he'll be a perma-benchie this season. However, with Fletcher gone, he might spend more time starting in midfield. Not on my watchlist, personally.

Started almost every game he was fit last season. Anything changed so far to affect that?

If he's a DEF he's def in for me, but doubting it'll be the case.

True, it took him 10 games to get started, then he did well enough, then the Baggies hit 40 points and donned the flip-flops. So it's true that his points total doesn't reflect his potential this season. But if he's a midfielder his value will be gone. As a 4.5 defender you're right, he'd be gold.

Would be 5 as a DEF with those stats, at least.

Takes quite a few set-pieces too. With WBA's early fixtures he could be gold.

Might consider at 5.0m, but I think the Baggies are going to have a stinker of a season as Pulis gets caught out by better managers coming in. Brunt would be an early-fixtures short-term punt for me,

Considering that when he played midfield, it was often very high up, almost forward, and that is expected to continue, I'm pretty sure he will be listed a midfielder again.

Out of interest, anyone planning on running 3-4-3 but with say Benteke Llorente Defoe? I would imagine they'd come in at the 8m mark each & would allow for a very reasonable defence & midfield. 15 goals each likely? Will Tammy Abraham impact Llorente?

    1. QPRUTD

For that front three, fixtures will play a huge role considering the teams that they play for.
I would personally prefer 1 or 2 fixture proof forwards from the big teams (as funds allow) and a third cheap forward from a team with plum fixtures.

    2. Ceci

Yes solely depends on price, planning 3-5-2 or 3-4-3 without prices is day dreaming. Tammy is new kid on the block and Llorente is experienced one, no point in speculating on a new guy unless his manager says he starts or Llorente is benched.

Llorente and Defoe not getting any younger. Llorente may not even be back from his broken arm until after season is under way. Defoe managed a solitary goal over the final third of last season. Will approach both with caution.

I'm seriously looking at Abraham as my 3rd striker. He could be 5.5m and start GW1 although Llorente will prolly be back by GW2.

Defoe - I agree, and I wonder if he'll be rotated with King or come on as an impact sub.

My structure will be Kane (c), a mid-price (sub 10m - have Jesus in mind at the moment) striker and cheap 3rd striker.

Yes, we need to monitor that. A problem is Llorente missing pre-season. What if Clements tries 2 up top in pre-season and then Llorente returns and he goes one up top and drops both Ayew and Abrahams? Tricky.

I went for value up front last season and got punished. Remember lukaku, ibra and Costa flying out of the gates?

Tekkers is a possible 2nd striker for me behind Kane, but the 3rd budget striker would be mostly benched by me (so Abrahams would be a fit). I'm looking for more points from midfield.

Three super-expensive strikers like Kane, Lukaku and Lacazette (as some suggested yesterday) might get plenty of points, but your midfield would all be 2nd-3rd tier. I think 2 decent strikers allows for better balance.

          • 14 Years

Those three would be like 35m. Way too much. I think the biggest conundrum will be whether to have kane and Alexis or just one of them. Two 13m players will destroying the team, but I'm thinking it is better to fit them in on the pre season wildcard and then drop one of them once things are clearer. If they both start in top form and you only have one that's a wildcard blown

I'm starting Kane, Jesus and Sanchez come what may. The discussion yesterday was interesting but it would be a big change in template to implement three top strikers and only play three mids ...I think two of them would be pretty good within the price structure mentioned though .. Eriksen and Salah.

With 3 super-expensive strikers plus Eriksen and Salah, you'd be filling out the rest of your squad with bargain-basement sorts. 2 5m mids, 3 4.5 defenders, nothing on the bench. When your strikers don't fire, you have desperately bad GWs in my opinion.

I'm not saying I agree with it necessarily just pointing out the price structure proposed by Kun. The defence includes two at 6m and two at 5m.

My concern is as you say the bench and also will the team structure allow you to react to bandwagons without a hit? It could be more difficult.

Agreed. What I won't be doing is buying 4.0 defenders, 4.5 midfielders or 5.0 strikers for the bench. When a cheap bandi emerges you'd have to use 2 transfers to get them in. With a benched 4.5 def, 5.5/5 mid or 6/5.5 str you can use 1 FT.

Yup, I want at least one good sub, more likely two. I thought it was an interesting post simply because Kun managed to fit in three big hitter strikers, two bloody good mids and a top defence too but the bench and transfers might ulltimately scupper its usefulness.

                        Cheers, found it:

                        "Forster/4m
                        Valencia Trippier Cedric Dawson/4m
                        Eriksen Salah Zaha/4.5/4.5

Yes, it looks a very strong starting XI, but for me 3 dead outfielders on the bench is a no-no. You'd be taking hits in no time.

Rose will play; my concern is the Wembley factor - I worry the extra space will impact their defence. I'm only looking at Kane to start from Spurs.

In your article, you mention an equation while trying to come up with the rankings for clean sheets? How did you come up with it? If its pre existing, what was the topic?

It explains in the article really.

I plotted the two points on a graph and drew a line of best fit. It's the line's equation.

To clarify the graph is CSs on the x-axis, and the ticker value on the Y. The two points are:

                  (11, 950) - WAT
                  (0, 1350) - che tot

Yeah understand. When you try to come with values for the CS ratings, the trend line that you used is helpful in creating the equation, right?

Have you ever calculated the equation of a line before?

That equation will basically give you the Y-value (Ticker rating) from the X-value (CSs)

                      y = -36.364x + 1350

e.g. So to find the value of a 'bou' fixture we enter the amount of CSs teams got in that fixture (Only 3!!!).

                      y = (-36.364 x 3) + 1350
                      y = 1241

I thoroughly enjoyed the news myself, but do bear in mind it's effectively pre-season and half the team hadn't played each other before.

A few years ago Celtic got similarly disgraced under Strachan (okay, not THAT bad) and went on to win the SPL. I suspect over a season Rangers would hold their own in League One at the moment. Having said that, my team, Inverness CT (just relegated) when they were a top-half side in the SPL were recruiting from League Two rejects and Conference teams.

Rangers are much better than that, I know 🙂 If Cardiff can get in the EPL, then perhaps one or two Scottish teams can, given time.

Without an injection of PL money, I don't think so. Even Celtic look like they might have to sell their best young player for buttons to a PL team and 2nd place Aberdeen's team has been gutted for a pittance. There's simply NO money north of the border.

There would be with the prospect of PL visibility. Swansea, Leicester and Hull didn't get loaded with money just because they're in England or Wales, but because they could (and eventually did) get in PL.

And Scotland is not particularly poor in itself. The reason the league is, is that it is not interesting. Glascow and Edinburgh at least are certainly very interesting commercial areas, and if their clubs even just could join the PL, they would attract investment. In a few years time 3-5 Scottish clubs would be firmly in the Championship, and certainly some or couple of them could make it in PL and do just fine. It's not as if Cardiff and Swansea were huge clubs when Welsh leagues joined the English ones.

I merged the Scottish league with the English in Football Manager. Celtic lingered around the lower reaches of the Championship, but the rest suffered double relegations. Just sayin'

In real world, given time, they would come good. They are not less viable grounds for a football club than Swansea or Hull, given a big league for the commerce. In fact, they're much better.

I'm slightly concerned about Everton up top. Given there incoming transfers and fees there's no possibility that Lukaku will stay, it simply doesn't balance. So unless they've got a wonder kid forward in the academy things could go expensively pear shaped.

I'd guess Rooney would displace Barkley, or maybe Mirallas. Up top they've bought Sandro, but they're trying to bring in Giroud. They're on their way to being a proper force; with all his limitations, Rooney + Giroud would be at least an equal replacement for Lukaku + a half-arsed Barkley, imo.

Yes, Rooney's utility these days is more in that midfield role, not a goalscoring force he is anymore, I feel.
And Giroud could be a very smart stop gap arrangement till the time their newly found wealth transforms them into a top 4 challenger, whence they can attract top strikers, a la City of pre-2012...

They are pretty much there IMO. Only need to sign a defensive CM, a winger and a striker. Still think they could win the title this season if they sign Perisic, Matic and Aubameyang / Lukaku

      GK: De Gea, Romero
      LB: Rojo, Blind
      RB: Valencia, Darmian
      CB: Bailly, Lindelof, Smalling, Jones
      CM: Herrera, Carrick
      DM: ?????, Fellaini
      AM: Pogba, Lingard
      RM: Mkhitaryan, Mata
      LM: ?????, Martial
      FW: ?????, Rashford

They basically have two decent players for every position with those three signings. Can get rid of Shaw, Januzaj and Rooney as well.

I'd love Matic, Perisic & Lukaku there.

A world class winger over Perisic would be nice, but none seem available after the Athletico ban. Signing Ronaldo/Bale is fantasy, but Griezmann was realistic... 🙁

With the amount of nailed strikers who are absolutely central to their teams goals, and wing backs this season, could it be the year for 4-3-3?

Especially with the amount of anticipated midfield hitter price hikes.

Kane Kaku Lacazette Morata and then Giroud if he goes to Everton/Hernandez if he goes to West Ham would all be main focal points.

That doesn't even include the Jesus/Kun dilemma

Three of the first 4 would set you back at least 36m. You can't have 3 off the top shelf without massively imbalancing your squad. The better wingbacks will be top dollar too. You'd end up with 3x4.5m midfielders!

At least? How high do you expect Lacazzette to be priced? Certainly just can't be more than 10 for the first season and at 5th placed club.

I think they could be 36 at max though.

                Kane 14
                Luka 12
                Laca & Mora 10 each

Yeh, I'm not going to get into pedantic arguments here. I said 'at 'least', meaning Kane and Lukaku could be more, as could the others. I don't really care as I'm only looking at one top-price striker (Kane) because I'm going for a balanced squad. You can do what you like.

Looks like Camp No No could get his big hitting front 3 for about £33m. It'll be interesting if the £10m strikers provide better returns than £10m midfielders - history tells us otherwise. But after scraping around for strikers last year, it would be a welcome change to field a competitive 433 line-up (more variation the better).

^This. It's not pedantic, we're talking about building a team and how much everything would cost, and the said forwards would not set us back at least 36m, more like at max that much. Kane + 2 other big hitters is definitely doable.

I'm not saying I'd do it though. I remains to be seen where new strikers are priced, and whether the high-scoring midfielders get the appropriate price hikes. If the strikers like Lacazette and Morata will be priced 10+, and midfielders like Alli, Mané and Eriksen remain under 10 despite scoring more than top strikers for 2 years now, going with a maximum of 2 strikers is an obvious choice. But if they get priced in line (so these midfielders costing about the same as Lukaku, and more than Lacazette and Morata), then it's not said that going with a Kane and a couple of 9-10m priced CF's backed up by smaller team key midfielders would be a bad strategy.

If there is a decent budget striker for a 3 upfront formation I'd consider 343 or 433, but since I don't think we will find much worth owning below 9m in the striker bracket I'll be looking at 442 or 352 dependant upon how the attacking wing backs are classified and priced.

If we have decent attacking wing backs, priced reasonably and classed as defenders... I'll be going 442 with 2 big strikers.

I think this season will be different from last year in terms of more striker options, in particular a greater range of good forwards across the price ranges.

Last season was all about expensive only with the occasional burst from Defoe, Austin and Llorente.

This season should rumoured moves take place then Arsenal will have a striker....so too West Ham, Defoe at Bournemouth too...the list goes on.

But mids are still gold - not just the expensive ones like Hazard, but at all three promoted clubs arguably their best players - who could be well priced - are mids. Mids will continue to dominate Liverpool points too. Pogba may make the step up this season.

Still too many mid options I think.

3-4-3 very likely to make a comeback. 4-3-3 could limite options too much in midfield.

Do you find 3 up top more attractive than 352 Jonty? I'm seeing extremely limited options for that 3rd striker spot.

I think last season showed we have to be flexible.

3-4-3 was used most often by the top players (HoF) and the winner Ben Crabtree last season, but most also switched to 3-5-2 when there were no good third striker options. So last season when Defoe or Austin dried up or got injured they switched.

that's how I'll play it next season. If there is a good third striker I'll get them.

I do think last season was one of the worst for good third strikers though as all the good ones were expensive.

If there are lots of 6-8m options with at least one scoring regularly at a given time then yep 3-4-3 does look good.

Alot for me depends on whether Arsenal get a striker who is nailed - whether Giroud moves to somewhere where he is nailed, whether Defoe can continue to roll back the years at Bournemouth and whether West Ham sign Hernandez or a n other. Could be lots of good options.

Agreed Jonty, 3-4-3 has been proven to be the optimum starting point but last season proved that the ability to adapt to the fpl terrain can be invaluable.

I was in the top 5k in November but stayed rigid and didn't adapt, put my trust in Llorente (when he wasn't scoring), Carroll even Rondon (Oh! My Days) and paid for it by scraping into the top 40k.

My lesson learnt, I'll certainly be more willing to be adapt. If the upward trend of wing back continues, i could switch to 442, if our cheap forward options dry up again, 352 is the answer.

At least i hop i will anyway....

One factor in favour of 4 at the back is if two or three of the premium players who are hugely expensive prove to be essential.

Kane, Aguero, Coutinho for example could be as much as 35m....then a 6m def who gets forward could be needed over a 8.5m mid.

I've always looked for a 3rd striker at about 6.5-7m, have preferred spending the cash in midfield. This season it will also be tempting to spend extra on wing backs most likely, can't see myself having the cash for Giroud/Hernandez as a 3rd striker, if they move. 2 from Kane/Lukaku/Aguero/Morata will cost around 25m, you'd have thought.

The ~6.5m midfielder bracket looks more appealing to me, with the likes of Knockaert heading the options from promoted clubs, a possibly OOP JRod at WBA, Lanzini (maybe 7m) ... etc.

I'm also hoping Southampton mids come back into the fold after Puels rotation last year. Tadic and Boufal might lose 0.5m from their price if we are lucky. They won't be any pricier for sure.

                that would be good.

Last season the way the prices worked out there were too many of the 8-8.5m mids doing well, the 6-7m were very patchy.

Likewise 3-4-3 limits options 'too much' in defence. There will be more quality options in that position too. So in summary, there are more options everywhere, if you're right, which means more valid formations and more variation in FPL teams.

All points to 442 then doesn't it? Will still wait to see what is around for 6-7.5m in the striker bracket. Even Defoe and Llorente will face competition now. If JRod is classed as a mid he could be a good option. 352 worked so well because we had plenty of mids playing as strikers... not so sure we will this time around.

442 with two premium strikers and two attacking wing backs from big sides should be possible with at least one premium mid.

It could be an option - but it can make a team inflexible.

Depends on the wingbacks though. Alonso at say 7.5 with cs points could offer better value than a 8m mid or 8m striker.

I'm expecting some rotation though at Chelsea this time around in defence btw.

Well if what I said is right, then it all points to nothing. Only a choice of which players you think will score more, regardless of position, as always, except that this time it may result in a wider variety of used formations. The formation will finally be revealed as the useless first step in conceptualising potential teams that it is. - maybe

Seeing alot of posts on here about formations. There are valid arguments for 352, 343, 433, 442 and even 5 at the back. The biggest factor will be price hikes and value which we simply dont know yet. That said this season has the potential to be one of the most exciting with all the options available.

Looking over the past 2 seasons as a whole, Spurs has been the best team in the PL. Still, I hear few talk about them as potential PL winners, and the bookies have Chelsea, City and United as the favorites. Chelsea I can understand. But are the likes of City and United likely to finish ahead of Tottenham this year?

Yeah, that may be it. They were terrible there last year, weren't they? But then again, Spurs are always terrible in Europe, may have nothing to do with the stadium. And losing to Monaco is no shame, looking back.

I get that, but Spurs seem to be getting a little bit better each year. Solid defense, one of the best GKs, the best goalscorer and some of the best attacking mids in Alli and Eriksen. And they know each other in and out. Plus, Kane is not knackered/injured at the start of the season for once.

I am just curious really, I don't watch so many games so I am interested in the opinions of more knowledgeable people.

Sure it's Guardiolas second season and their attack looks immense, but they need to build the defense from anew and we don't know how the GK is gonna work out.

United look weaker now than last year after losing Ibra. Some new signings may change that of course and I expect better from Mkhitaryan, but with the team they have at the moment I cannot see them ahead of Spurs.

How did 72.8% compare with the other Burnley defenders (particularly, Ben Mee)?

Point being, he may well do better in a team with more attacking intent than Burnley where he can pick a forward pass rather as opposed to hoofing a clearance.

He's in my team if he's 5m and Baines and Coleman are 1m more.

A good point. He is one of only two being above 70, the other being Mee. However, Lowton beats him on recoveries, and BPS, while Mee beats him on CBI. Keen has 2 goals, the others 1, but only 1 assist.

I am surprised that Koeman went for Kean.

Possibly true, but we had far more work to do, squad needed much more of an overhaul than yours does. Glad we're getting business done early though. That was one of the keys last season, getting everyone in for a full pre season together. Probably why we might be paying a little over the odds for a couple.

          Yep early moves definitely helps.

Getting Mooy permantly was probably the key move - provides continuity and you keep your best player from last season. For Brighton that would be the equiv of resigning Knockaert.

Brighton's changes are more about cover. short term Murray does up top, Bong at LB, Ryan in goal is fine...but injuries to them and it looks bare. Arguably having Murray as the main striker is bare as it is.

If by a poacher you mean a player who only looks for scoring chances, Lacazette is not that. Drops deep to help in build-up, and takes great part in defending.

      Lacazette, Morata, Giroud/Defoe/Lukaku/Jesus/4.5

There's no rule that says you shouldn't go there

The rule is players need to be on the player list [Morata] 😉

Omg so true lololol. But my point is that I wouldn't be averse to having even more than one new PL player. They can be bargains for that reason, and much of our decisions to avoid them are based on limited data and myths that are strengthened by personal experience with just one player etc

Not sure it's a myth. Newcomers (expensive ones I mean, not so much cheap promotees whose targets are modest) rarely get off to a flying start. From last season who can you name after Ibra?

Ibra did pretty well when he played. Why is he treated as an exception, when there aren't many new expensive forwards every year. That's my point. I can't name another Ibra because he was the only one. But this season we have Lacazette and maybe Morata and more.

Btw by 'myth' I don't mean it's 100% false. I only mean that it's not 100% true, since the simplicity of the idea captures people's imaginations and let's them simplify their u.derstanding and propagate something that doesn't reflect the messiness of reality. We should treat each new player separately, and being a new player is only a factor, not the only factor.

No, I mean look at the list of top scorers in FPL last season and see who was new to the PL.
Defenders page 1 - only Gibson (quite far down the list)
                Midfielders - none
Strikers - Ibra and Slimani (bottom of the page).

I might have forgotten one or two - take a look yourself.

Absolute numbers are useless for that exercise. My whole point is that it's relative to how many new players there were in total. Plus you were talking about expensive, high-profile signings. I'm not really concerning myself with Gibson tbh.

Well look at the columns for best value over the season - still pretty sparce.

Martins Indi and Llorente aswell. Others like Alonso and Negredo had moved to the league, even though they have been here before.

Does Huddersfield use wingback? Any half-decent rising lateral defender in the team?

Both Tommy Smith and Chris Lowe like to get forward. Smith > Kachunga was the most frequent assist > scorer in the Championship last season.

four at the back. But their full backs are very attacking. Both good options - ones to monitor in pre-season.

But - if you expect clean sheets you may be disappointed.

      Thanks both.

The type of forward they're signing gives me an idea of how they'll probably play. And that got my interest in their laterals.

Came across this saved post from last season. Supposedly has a 90% chance you won't pick a player who blanks and a 70% chance you will pick the best player in your team. Going to give this a try next season.

"Take all of your midfielders and strikers (7 if, like me, you normally play 3-4-3) and make the following columns:

    - Total points scored so far per minute
    - Total points scored per minute at Home/Away (depending on fixture)
    - Average points scored Home/Away in last 3
    - % involvement in team goals scored overall (ie. goals or assists)
    - Average number of team goals scored per Home/Away match in last 3
    - Average number of opposition goals conceded per Away/Home match in last 3
    - Number of games where they did not blank

Captain the player who wins the most categories. If you have a tie (eg. 2-2), go with the player who scored the most over the past 2 weeks. If that's still a tie, favour a midfielder.

Don't rule anyone in midfield or attack out. This got me a ton of points for Capoue when everyone was saying his previous form was just a fluke.

As the season goes on, the stats will make it even more likely you will succeed. Obviously, it can be the difference between getting 4 points or 24 points so week in, week out it should really help.''

A very helpful pre season article would be an analysis of all of the attacking wing back options. After prices and classifications are out of course... There are options from promoted clubs right up to the Champions, and plenty in between.

At a quick glance I'd say of the top 20 defenders last season, 10 were wingbacks/fullbacks and 10 were centre backs.

Then there's the 'do you invest in 3, 4 or 5 playable defenders?' debate. Plenty food for thought!
