FPL Reveal Free Hit Chip

In addition to the recent raft of player price reveals, earlier today Fantasy Premier League announced that they have introduced a new chip ahead of this week’s launch.

While the two wildcards, Triple Captain and Bench Boost chips remain intact, All Out Attack has belatedly been given the elbow, replaced by a brand new “Free Hit” chip.

Essentially, the Free Hit can be used once in a season and allows you to make unlimited changes to your entire 15-man squad for a single Gameweek.

Once the deadline for that Gameweek has passed, though, you squad immediately reverts to the previous line-up.

It’s important to note that you cannot use this chip to play the market to your advantage.

Any value gained/lost by those players drafted in as temporary new additions will not effect your squad.

This only applies to new players acquired on the Free Hit chip.

Ie, if you already have Alexis Sanchez in your original squad and choose to keep him on your Free Hit Chip, then his price would still be subject to fluctuation.

So if you have any players plummeting in value in your original squad, playing the Free Hit chip won’t stop their price drops from being taken off your budget.

Of course, if you choose to use transfers or the Wildcard instead, you’d avoid those drops in cost and earn the appropriate value from any rises.

Arguably, then, the Free Hit chip could be used to help temporarily trade out injured and/or banned players that you ultimately want to retain. If they’re seen as expendable, a transfer out is perhaps the best solution.

Like the second Wildcard, Triple Captain and Bench Boost chips, the Free Hit chip could be used when planning for Double Gameweeks in order to maximise the number of players with two fixtures.

A specific example of this would be Double Gameweek 27 last year, where Stoke City and Manchester City were the only teams to play twice.

Despite knowing that both sides blanked in Gameweek 28, many managers took points hits to bring in the likes of Sergio Aguero and also played their Triple Captain chip on the Argentine.

The Free Hit chip would have allowed us to temporarily acquire City and Stoke assets without the need to tear apart our teams, while also navigating the upcoming blank more efficiently.

However, it could also be used as a reactionary chip.

Although this may be a helpful tool as a quick fix when your squad is hit by injury and suspension, it could ultimately come in handier when utilised on those Gameweeks hit hard by FA Cup postponements.

We witnessed this last season in the afore-mentioned Gameweek 28, where only four fixtures went ahead.

Bournemouth’s Josh King was the star turn that day, serving up a season-high 18-point return at home to West Ham.

The Norwegian had bagged four goals in as many matches prior to that fixture but, with many managers choosing to be prudent with their points hits, he was drafted in by just over 141,000 for Gameweek 28 and selected by only 252,000+.

With the option of a Free Hit chip, King would surely have been a major player in far more squads for a Gameweek that also saw the likes of Everton and Liverpool participate.

As this comment from Lateriser in this morning’s Hot Topic also pointed out, though, the Free Hit Chip could also help take advantage of big fixture swings and help you load up on sides with very appealing fixtures.

In that respect, it could be viewed as more subjective and dependent on the players you hold and state of your squad in any given Gameweek.

Certainly, when assessed against the merits of the All Out Attack chip, the new Free Hit chip looks a far more useful addition and one that should afford a greater degree of tactical variety from FPL managers over the course of 2017/18.

Based on these prices, the other Chelsea defenders may start at 7.0.

He would've been one of the highest scoring defenders if he started as a defender last season. I'd say it's fair.

Can anyone calculate the points he would have lost from -1 per goal & CS and points he would have gained from 24bpc per goal instead of 18? I'd imagine he'd be about 5-10 points less overall...

      Worse option imo.

His goal returns were that of a 6 - 6.5 striker
His assists were up in the elite territory for forwards, only Costa registered more.

Overall, I think you want your strikers to have both, but goal scoring deserves greater emphasis. At least, I'd judge my striker buys on goals first and foremost, from that I'd be a bit put off by 8.5 for him. If he could up his goals to 15-17 and keep the assist record steady he'd be worth it.

    That'll be interesting.

One player that returned less pts than he might have done last season was Sir Leighton Baines. Despite all the posts about other defensive picks it was actually Baines who created more chances than any other defender in the game (Lukaku managed to duff them all up...sheesh)

If we assume Baines is still on pens with Lukaku now gone then his price would surely have to be the same as Milner...6.5...but that's a whole 1 mill more than last season.

I'm beginning to think FPL have, or are about to, over price the game this year, largely.

    A thought on Milner:

If he has exactly the same season this year as he did last year, just by being a defender, the additional points he would receive for clean sheets and scoring as a defender rather than a midfielder would see him finish on 182 points, even if he doesn't get any extra Bonus points.

That would make him the top-scoring defender and the 9th top-scoring player on the entire site.

    Food for thought?

Which better option Moses or Milner?

Milner on penalties but possibly in decline?
Moses 26 in a side known for clean sheets

Other consideration is plenty of good Chelsea alternatives to moses
No real Liverpool alternatives to Milner

If Liverpool don't sign a new left-back, is anyone considering shelling out the £6.5m for Milner? 7 goals and 4 assists last season isn't bad for a midfielder, let alone a defender, but do his attacking capabilities and pen duties outweigh the overall weakness of Liverpool's defence?

    1. NIGHTHIKER - I Kane, I Shaw…
      • 9 Years
      6 years, 9 months ago

Won't be signing him immediately with Arsenal and Man City in the first 4. However, if Liverpool don't sign another LB and he keeps penalties, he could be a great option for those playing wildcards during the first international break.

Question: So if we use this chip, I assume the week after we would still just have 1 FT. But what if I used my FT(s) from that week first, and THEN used the chip, would that essentially prevent wasting a transfer I wanted for the future?

Question: How easy is it to increase your team values at the beginning of a season by jumping on the bandwagons ? Presumably in the first 3 or 4 weeks whilst the casuals are still avidly playing, they are using their free transfers to pick up those random players who have their purple patches in the first month and player prices are more volatile.
Is it realistic to think that if you could identify these bandwagons (via various price prediction sites) you could gain £0.2m per player per week ? Net 0.1m per player after profit deducted ? How many Bandwagon players are there in a given week on average 2, 5, 10 ?

I have a thought that is probably going to have no merit, but, if you think about investing and pensions, they always advise the more you put in at the beginning the bigger the reward at the end. So if I apply that logic to FPL. Assume I take a 4 point hit to increaseyour budget by £0.1m, if I do that in week one I have 37 more weeks with a budget of £100.1, maybe sufficient to enough of an increase to recoup the 4 point hit and much more likely than if I took the hit in week 20 or 30.

If by any chance taking that 4 point hit in week 1 turns out to have accumulated more than 4 points by week 38 then why wouldn't I do it 10 times per week rather than just once. If I pick up 10 bandwagon players and take a 36 point hit (1 FT) in week 1, 2 and 3 (108 points) I could go into week 4 with £103m. So 35 more weeks with a $3m budget advantage. Is it possible that this extra $3m will recoup the 108 outlay ?

    Thoughts ?

Right but they are sacrificing their team for the entire season. Lets say you start with a decent team in week 1. With 5 top players and a bunch of average ones. at the end of week one you have an average score no doubt. There are 10 players that excelled above their price point. You pick them all up, by dropping your 10 non top players. (budget constraints taken into consideration) In week 2 you play your 5 top players and 6 of those that you picked up. Some of them will suck and some will do ok, you'll probably score slightly worse than if you hadn't traded. Now after week 2 there new players that have excelled so you drop the 10 guys you picked up in week 1 taking a profit of £0.1m per player. Maybe you'll hold on to some of them if they had another good week and their price is still rising.
By the end of week 3 you have a team value of £103m but your team has scored slightly below average, you WC and now set up your team as normal. This question is can you recover from the below average start and the 108 point hits now that you have a bigger budget than everyone else.

Ugh, what a horrible chip, yet another one to try to level the playing field between talented and less talented players. Now it's another reason for people to look to the predictable DGW and then play this to the detriment of those who look to predict DGW's and plan towards them. Get rid of all the chips ex one WC!
