Scout Notes – Pre-Season

Romelu Lukaku breaks his duck while Antonio Valencia sees red as Manchester United warm up for the forthcoming derby clash with a second successive victory.

Elsewhere, Joe Hart might be close to a loan move, but it is up front where West Ham need fresh blood as they are held to a goalless draw in their opening pre-season encounter.

Here are the notes from the latest matches.

Real Salt Lake 1 Manchester United 2

Romelu Lukaku opened his Manchester United account with the winner in an increasingly bad-tempered and mildly bizarre match in Utah.

The Belgian forward, with 45.2% Fantasy Premier League ownership, is currently the most popular player in the game and he latched on to a Henrikh Mkhitaryan pass to score before the break in United’s second pre-season match of the summer.

The lively Mkhitaryan had earlier equalised for the Red Devils – his second strike of the US tour – following good work by Jesse Lingard. The 8.0-priced Armenian is currently in fine form and, with just 3.2% ownership, is doing his best to plug his differential credentials ahead of United’s very kindly set of opening fixtures.

Lingard (6.0) is another who has so far impressed over United’s two fixtures.

A completely new line-up took to the pitch for the second-half – their opponents had already made the same move just 33 minutes into the encounter – but the visitors finished the match with just ten men when Antonio Valencia was dismissed for a challenge from behind on Salt Lake’s Sebastian Saucedo.

Even then, referee Allen Chapman gave Jose Mourinho the option to simply substitute Valencia as he didn’t want to brandish a red card in a friendly. But when Mourinho refused, Valencia was given his marching orders.

The clash grew increasingly spicy in the second half, with Juan Mata injured by a heavy challenge from Saucedo, and Matteo Darmian also limping off with a knock late on.

Mourinho played down the extent of both injuries post-match.

“Mata has a big ankle, but I hope it is nothing important. A few days, a week, probably. Darmian’s problem is not an important one.”

After utilising a back three in the win over LA Galaxy at the weekend, Mourinho opted for a 4-2-3-1 formation, declaring pre-match that his players would be:

“…playing in different positions and thinking football in a different way and being organised in a different way. We are also going to play with four at the back.”

That gave new signing Victor Lindelof, already a popular pick with 17.2% FPL ownership, a chance to make his first start for the club, while Mkhitaryan and Lingard were employed just behind Lukaku up front.

Mourinho’s 11 changes at the break included Sergio Romero replacing Joel Pereira in goal, with David de Gea not involved.

United will face rivals City in the early hours of Friday morning.

Manchester United XI First half: J Pereira; Fosu-Mensah, Lindelof, Jones, Blind; Carrick, Pogba, McTominay; Lingard, Mkhitaryan; Lukaku.

Manchester United XI Second half: Romero; Valencia, Bailly, Smalling, Darmian; Herrera, Fellaini, A Pereira; Mata (Mitchell 59), Martial (Tuanzebe 90); Rashford.

SK Sturm Graz II 0 West Ham United 0

Youngsters and new signings blooded, 22 players used and no-one injured – West Ham’s first run-out of the summer ticked a number of pre-season boxes.

Unfortunately, the ‘goals scored’ box wasn’t one of them as Slaven Bilic’s men drew a blank in Austria.

Bilic handed Pablo Zabaleta his Hammers debut at right-back in a 4-5-1 formation that had Ashley Fletcher as a lone striker supported by Andre Ayew from the left and Robert Snodgrass wide on the right.

Mark Noble returned following his recent operation on a long- standing abdominal injury to captain the first-half line-up and came close to breaking the deadlock with a late free-kick. Manuel Lanzini then took over set-piece duties after the interval.

The Argentinian midfielder is currently the most popular West Ham pick among Fantasy Premier League managers, his 7.0 price and attacking potential tempting 7.1% into early investment, and he had chances both from dead-ball situations and open play as the visitors pushed for a winner.

Left-back Aaron Cresswell took over the captain’s armband from Noble for the second half, while Spanish striker Toni Martinez replaced Fletcher up front, with Bilic’s striker options severely limited by injuries to Andy Carroll (hip) and Diafra Sakho (back).

That lack of depth among the forwards is one area Bilic has been keen to address in the transfer market, while the reported loan signing of England goalkeeper Joe Hart will at least provide plenty of competition at the other end of the pitch.

Michail Antonio (hamstring) and Winston Reid (knee) also played no part as they continue their recovery work, while Jose Fonte has been given extra time off after helping Portugal reach the semi-finals of the Confederations Cup.

Bilic also revealed that midfielder Cheikou Kouyate suffered a setback in training, injuring his knee “in a very strange and awkward way”.

The Hammers face Fulham next on Thursday.

West Ham United XI: Adrian (Randolph 46); Zabaleta (Byram 46), Collins (Rice 46), Burke (Ogbonna 46), Masuaku (Cresswell 46); Noble (Cullen 46), Obiang (Makasi 46), Holland (Fernandes 46); Snodgrass (Lanzini 46), Ayew (Feghouli (46); Fletcher (Martinez 46).

A reminder that all the friendly results and key Scout Notes are being captured here, in our Pre-Season Guide.

Who do we reckon will be Man Utds first choice left back this season? Shaw is currently injured but there's positive talk coming out of his and Mourinhos corner about him getting the chance. If he was to nail down that spot, he could be a steal at £5.0m. He will miss the start of the season with his ankle injury but after that, do we think he has a realistic chance...?

      Two things emerge from this

Tom Carroll (on some set pieces) becomes the best 4.5 player

Sigurdsson will not even be looked at until GWK 6.

Fantasy Football Scout daily hot topic

Hey Mkhi you’re so fine…so why isn’t he in our squads?

With Pogba continuing to play in a deeper midfield role and Mkhitaryan playing in an advanced role it seems strange to the casual observer to see the former command a 20.1% ownership, while the latter sits in just 3.2% of teams.

Have we got it wrong regarding Manchester United’s midfield and instead of Pogba we should be drafting in the impressive Mkhitaryan. They are both kindly priced at 8.0 after all.

Last night’s friendly was a case in point. Granted the opposition was just an MLS side and the personnel chopped and changed but it was Mkhitaryan who impressed, not Pogba.

    Who is considering Mkhitaryan?

Of Pogba owners – if a DM is not signed will you make the switch to Mkhitaryan?

To answer your question, the MLS is not the Premier League and I want to get a clearer idea of Mourinho's Premier League plans for this season first. I think I'd rather jump on a week or two late if he's looking worth buying than have him from the off, particularly as I don't have an 8.0 slot for him at present.

Mkhi is one of 3 players in my initial draft that I haven't changed since. I'm not sure I understand the Pogba hype still and at 8.0m I think he's a steal.

My only fear with Mkhi is he seems a little injury prone and Mou knows this so there is the risk of possible rotation but I think in terms of FPL Mkhi offers a little bit more.

Having said that, you make the point about Utd signing a DM. If they do this then I may be tempted over to Pogba just because I know I can rely on Mou playing him every week and he will get more goal scoring opportunities but for now I'm sold on Mkhi.

It depends on another factor as well, if United sign Perisic!

I think if they sign Perisic - Lukaku will benefit.
If they sign a DM - Pogba will advance more - It will benefit Lukaku as well.

      So just get Lukaku.

People are probably reeling still from last year when many started with Mkhi but he barely played at the beginning of the season, often coming on instead as a second half substitute. His PL debut wasn't until the 10th September and even then he was substituted. It took him until the 11th December to score in the PL which didn't impress people further and meanwhile his FPL value plummeted. It remains a question whether Mourinho trusts Mkhitaryan still having said he has played well for the club albeit in the Europa League. Despite his impressive record at Dortmund he is yet to prove himself in the Prem and in FPL terms too and is a rotation risk with the competition for places in the Utd attacking midfielder slots

It isn't worth getting excited over friendlies, I'd rather wait and see him do it for real. I think its better to wait and see closer to the opener to gauge how United are likely to setup, just to be safe. Personally the way my team is currently made up means there isn't really a spot for Mkhi either.

My concern is that Mkhyi produced his best work for us in Europe last year, 11 games 6 goals (4 goals in 24 in the league). Maybe Jose will prefer his unlocking abilities during CL games and prefer the power and pace Lindgard, Rashford, Martial and possibly Perisic in the league. We know Pogba will play a high proportion of games as there is no one else in the squad that performs his role. Mkhyi could be dropped a lot easier if he doesn't score for a couple as we have so many other potential replacements.

Mkhitaryan had the joint 6th largest fall from grace last season with a cost drop from 9.5 to 8.7 over the course of the season.

4 goals 1 assist and an overall points score in line with Wayne Routledge and Jordan Henderson does not make good reading for the terrible season he had last year in all honesty. He will have to show some form before I give him a chance.

It is very simple for me. If I have to choose between these two, I will go on Pogba. Why? Because he plays 90min and period.

Pogba has not yet produced significant fpl returns, only stats, at juve or utd. I see as too wild a punt to predict a player to start adding goals and assists to their game. Utd not attacking enough to double up so just Lukaku for me.

That burn last season when he was the first name on my team sheet, I even called my FPL team after him at the start!
If he was 7m, I'd be very tempted to punt on him at the start but I much prefer a defensive double up with Lukaku and stay away from the mids. Far too much uncertainty especially if they sign Perisic!

Mhiki so far has all the hallmarks of Shinji Kagawa mk.II...great in the Bundesliga, never really converted it into Premier League performances...seems destined to always disappoint.

Pogba I'm more prepared to entertain as an improving midfield asset...he seems to be more solid, has more potential about him.

With Siggy apparently leaving, I think Tom Carroll is by far the best 4.5m option but between the two you mention I think I would slightly learn towards Loftus-Cheek.

It all depends on game time and positions though, if Chalobah gets deployed as a DM and Loftus Cheek as an attacking mid then there's no debate really. I think it's one to monitor during pre season as with a lot of players at the moment.

Siggy will be replaced. Narsingh is not nailed. Abraham will fight with Llorente for the forward spot.

I think both are unlikely starters at the beginning. Puncheon looks like the one as AM on set-pieces for FdB. He's also been made club captain so Loftus-Cheek from the bench I reckon. He could yet prove a great pick but Tom Carroll looks the one in the 4.5 price bracket.
Having both does free up a lot of funds though and I might well go with it for that reason and possibly start with a 433!

De Boer essentially said on Sky Sports PL last night that RLC offers him options, I am concerned that this will mean he doesn't necessarily start every game. I think the hype train has exploded on this one. Going to be competing for places alongside Cabaye, captain Puncheon and Milojevic. At 16% ownership already the bandwagon has really picked up speed and if he doesn't start there will be a fire sale and we will start to see price falls which we really don't want to see as FPL managers. I have him in my team currently but tempted like Jonty to prop for Carroll

    Foster-Myhill
    Trippier-Cedric-Lindelöf (4.5-4.0)

I hope so. Watched a couple of youtube videos of him today (so naturally I'm an expert now :p) seems like a good fit for united

He's had one great season. He's young and needs guidance and development. Mourinho is not the man for that job. He likes em ready to go and doing what it says on the box.
Also if he wants to get the best out of pogba and Herrera (his two best players along with mkhiti) then I don't keita suits. He runs the midfield, as do they. A proper defensive midfielder is what's needed.

good point. means we will always be spending 40 million+ for players though :/

I miss the fergie days when he used to buy a striker for 6m (chicharito)

Well keita is going for 70m ish so wouldn't help that. I'm really keen for him to join Liverpool. Anxious about it even. Looks an amazing talent.

Thoughts on first draft of 3-5-2?
    Forster (Boruc)
    Bellerin, Cahill, Aké (Cédric, Mee)
Willian, Bernardo Silva, Ramsey, RLC, Alli
    Lacazette, Kayne (Murphy)

Interesting draft. I think there may be doubts about Bellerin's pitch time so Kolasinac could be a better pick. Also prefer Azpilicueta to Cahill, particularly.

Silva an interesting choice but I might be tempted to wait and see. Could you free up 2m to get De Bruyne? Could do Boruc to 4m, Mee to 4m, Cahill to Luiz and Bellerin to Monreal?

Why is there doubts regarding Bellerin?

I like the changes you've suggested though, may be bringing them into play!

would go with sane over bernardo silva, I think he will be eased into the team and might only get a couple of sub appearances in the first few gw's

that being said.. sane might also be a rotation risk as things stand at the moment

A Foster or Forster? Is Forster worth extra 0.5?

B Bertrand or Cedric? Is Bertie worth extra 0.5?

would downgrade aguero for a better mid

If aguero starts surely with Man City's attacking force he has to get a fair few points or is it a risk with Jesus been there? What other striker and mid would you go for?

went for Lukaku, Jesus & Gayle myself, will consider Rooney after the opening 6 GW's.

Try upgrading wijnaldum to pogba / alli if you manage to free up the funds
