FPL Draft – Player Rankings

An essential tool in any Fantasy drafter’s kit is a customised draft board.

This is a list of players ranked in order of where you would draft them in. It’s incredibly useful to have your own personal rankings on hand during draft day. When it is your turn to pick a player in the draft, you only have a small amount of time to choose from a huge list of players. Having all players ranked beforehand should save you from getting stage fright and drafting the wrong player under pressure. A good starting point for creating your own draft board is to rank all players by their prices in the standard FPL game.

Ideally this will follow some of the key rules I outlined in my previous article about draft strategy.

This includes streaming defenders, whereby defenders are picked on short term fixtures and can be regularly drafted in and out throughout the season. This is crucial as defenders will dominate the free player list as there are more of them in the game.

Another key strategy is to prioritise strikers as there are limited numbers in this group who can score significant points in the game. Strong midfield options as well as starting goalkeepers should also figure prominently as the number of quality options is also limited

Below is my personal list, as it stands, of the top 120 Premier League players for the season-long FPL Draft game for a standard eight team league. Expect players to move up and down the list as pre-season continues and more transfers are finalised. This should give a broad guide to how to approach draft night and which players to target.

Player Rankings

  1. Harry Kane(FWD1)-Has increased his goal tally in each of the last 3 seasons.
  2. Alexis Sanchez(MID1)-Transfer to City would only boost his potential.
  3. Romelu Lukaku(FWD2)-Clear 2nd favourite to win the Golden Boot.
  4. Sergio Aguero(FWD3)-Still averaged 5.6 PPG last season
  5. Alexandre Lacazette(FWD4)-Scored 28 in 30 league games for Lyon
  6. Dele Alli(MID2)-18 goals and 11 assists for a 21 year old. Sky’s the limit.
  7. Kevin De Bruyne(MID3)-A ridiculous 21 assists last year but only 6 goals.
  8. Sadio Mane (MID4)-Was on pace for 18 goals and 9 goals if not for AFCON & injury.
  9. Gabriel Jesus(FWD5)-Only Kane had a higher PPG in 16/17
  10. Christian Eriksen(MID5)-His fantasy points have gone up every year he’s been in the league.
  11. Philippe Coutinho-(MID6)-Scored >10 goals for the first time in 16/17.
  12. Mesut Ozil (MID7)-Lacazette should help. Sanchez leaving would hurt.
  13. Jamie Vardy(FWD6)-Scored 8 in 13 games after Craig Shakespeare took over
  14. Roberto Firmino(FWD7)-Versatile. Can play as a midfielder or striker.
  15. Leroy Sane(MID8)-Nailed down a starting spot last season. Could breakout big.
  16. Gylfi Sigurdssson(MID9)-Move to a better club should boost his potential.
  17. Eden Hazard(MID10)-Has scored 190 points 4 out of 5 years. Would be MID2 if not for injury.
  18. Jermaine Defoe(FWD8)-2 seasons with 15 goals each. Now plays for a good team.
  19. Christian Benteke(FWD9)-When he’s the number 1 striker, he’s good for 10 goals.
  20. Pedro(MID11)-Less rotation risk with Hazard out.
  21. Heung-Min Son(MID12)-Only 3 midfielders managed more goals (14).
  22. David Silva(MID13)-Never had less than 9 assists in a season.
  23. Henrikh Mkhitaryan(MID14)-Scored more goals in the Europa League than Premier League.
  24. Paul Pogba(MID15)-The team will be built around him but he’s never scored more than 8 in a league season.

  26. Manolo Gabbiadini(FWD11)-Flashed promise with 4 goals in 1st 3 games and 2 in EFL Cup.
  27. Michel Antonio(MID16)-Unique OOP and Reverse OOP potential.

  32. Wilfried Zaha(MID19)-Palace a good bet to improve this year led by Zaha.
  33. Ross Barkley(MID20)-A move to Spurs would hurt his minutes.
  34. Adam Lallana(MID21)–Liverpool midfield now incredibly crowded
  35. Manuel Lanzini(MID22)-Stepped into the void Payet left.
  36. Fernando Llorente(FWD14)-Could miss start of season. 15 goals in debut year.
  37. Salomon Rondon(FWD15)-May lose place to Jay Rodriguez.
  38. Saido Berahino(FWD16)-0 goals last year. Once scored 14 goals in a season.
  39. Sam Vokes(FWD17)-Padded his stats with 5 goals in last 5 games.
  40. Cesc Fabregas(MID23)-Difficult to predict when he starts and when he sits.
  41. Willian(MID24)-Early season punt until Hazard get back.
  42. Sandro Ramirez(FWD18)-One to watch in pre-season. Forget him if Wayne Rooney takes striker position.
  43. Michy Batshuayi (FWD19)-He is Chelsea’s only striker who actually wants to be there.
  44. Aaron Ramsey(MID25)-1 league goal in 16/17. Formation change could be last shot at finding 13/14 form.
  45. Davy Klaassen(MID26)-Will have to fight off Barkley & Wayne Rooney.
  46. Bernardo Silva(MID27)-Minutes will be very low at first.
  47. Riyad Mahrez(MID28)–Set to leave. Arsenal are reportedly interested.
  48. Dusan Tadic(MID29)-Ranked 9th in the “Creativity” metric.
  49. Nathan Redmond(MID30)-Only 4 clubs scored less goals than SOT in 16/17. He’ll be involved if they score more.
  50. Georginio Wijnaldum(MID31)–Will be rotated more with Liverpool in the UCL.
  51. Juan Mata(MID32)–Always an attacking threat. Never a regular starter.
  52. Andre Ayew(MID33)-Only 1 year removed from scoring 171 points.
  53. Theo Walcott(MID34)-High-risk. Only 6 midfielders scored more goals (10) last year.

  67. Victor Moses(DEF8)-Room for growth on 3 goals & 3 assists.
  68. Kyle Walker(DEF9)–Could be Pep’s new Dani Alves.
  69. Steve Mounie(FWD20)-Record signing. Starting FWD role is his to lose.

  71. Marcus Rashford(FWD22)-Struggled to find goals from the LW position.
  72. Wayne Rooney(FWD23)-He’s only got to beat Sandro for the FWD position.
  73. Tammy Abraham(FWD24)-23 goals in 41 games for Bristol City last year. Only 19 years old.
  74. Toby Aldeweireld(DEF10)-12 of Spurs’ 17 clean sheets were at home. Now they play at Wembley.
  75. Jan Vertonghen(DEF11)-5 goals & 3 assists in 12/13 season. Since then he has 1 goal & 1 assist.

  77. Laurent Koscielny(DEF13)-Has scored over 120 points in 4 straight years despite never making 3000 minutes.
  78. Hector Bellerin(DEF14)-Switch to RWB could make him the right footed Alonso.

  81. Shkodran Mustafi(DEF17)-Arsenal usually good for 10-15 clean sheets.

Pav A Nice Day Years of experience have taught me that the golden rule of fantasy football is that all my players hate me and deliberately do not score points in order to spite me.

This is invaluable for when FPL draft launches.

Great list- I'll be copying the bulk of it myself as it chimes well with my thoughts too.

Barkley leaving would push him up. If Sandro does nothing in pre season he jumps even higher.

So I wrote this a few days ago and already things have changed as is the nature of the transfer window. I intended to have more general analysis as well as longer comments for each player down to 120 but I hit the word count really early.

Morata would immediately be in the top 10, pushing Batshuayi off the list entirely.
Arnautovic would be around the MID30-35 range and push Lanzini, Antonio and Snodgrass all down a few since we don't know who's going to play where and how many minutes.
Kyle Walker gets pushed down a tad with rumours of Danilo.
Javier Hernandez would be around STR15.

I'm not buying the Coutinho rumours as of today but of course that could change if news heats up.

I was inspired by the original post and have been working on a tier system ever since. You can read about tier systems in relation to NFL fantasy football. The basic premise is that you pick a player in the highest tier, regardless of whether you need another position or not. Tiers are defined by drop off points in whichever metric you're using. In my case, I'm using average points per game projections

This isn't anything fancy at the moment but takes the current RMT rankings and applies an average point per game. I've excluded any players below 2.0 points per game.

    https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1QZALUVpvlhVUsLrajeZGG3koPBpZZIM97LFg19NIS0M/edit?usp=sharing

I'm also trying to work with standard deviation to find the true value of De Gea vs. Sanchez, for example. Both the best players in their position but you wouldn't draft De Gea until at least round 3 (in an 8-man league). Still a working progress...

    I have tweaked this slightly.

    1. Calculated the standard deviation of each players data set.
    2. Applied a "value" rating. This is based on their average point projections in relation to their peer set i.e. their position.
    3. Calculated a "high" and "low" rating based on the "value" +/- the standard deviation.

This should allow players to normalised regardless of their position. Some common sense should be applied to this when drafting i.e. you don't want to miss out on any GK but it's worth sacrificing De Gea for Rondon (for example) despite De Gea scoring more points, because the next best after De Gea is much better than the next best after Rondon

Worth noting that this based on the current RMT ratings and is subject to change the closer we get to kick off. I've also based this on a 16 man league using 20 GKs, 100 defenders, 100 midfielders and 60 strikers. Smaller leagues will yield different results.

Nice work. Shows premium defenders could be worth more than midfielders of the same value, especially in a draft league where people are picking on name value...

Excellent work Pav! I hope you are able to update these rankings daily.

Your rankings looks pretty similar compared to mine: http://www.FPLRankings.com

I think Berahino is the biggest difference between the lists. I would not draft him even in 10-team leagues.

Also I have DEFs and GKs a bit higher than you as I think the best ones DO have value even though you would able to stream those guys (at least DEFs) week-to-week. I'm unable make calculations that would show that a guy like Townsend offers more value (VORP) than Azpilicueta but I could be wrong.

Berahino's that high because I think he's going to beat Diouf and Crouch to the starting gig up front. He had a run of 8 straight starts last season in GMWKs 28-35.

Peter Crouch started a ridiculous number of games in the 2nd half of last season and I can't think Mark Hughes will want that to continue.

Fantastic article thanks for the insight. Does anyone know when Draft is due to launch? I know it said w/c 17th, but I haven't seen hardly any mention of it, perhaps some teething issues? Cant wait for it to open and get going alongside the normal format.

I asked the same question this morning and got no response. It has gone very quiet, but at least there's still plenty of time to sort out any issues they're presumably facing before the start of the season, even if it doesn't launch this week as promised.

Very nice article Pav. I've been in a draft league for 3 years now and love it!

Very good point about drafting strikers early, this year I plan to draft at least two strikers in the first three rounds.

Just curious why you rate Jesus so low? I think he is guaranteed more minutes than Aguero or do you have another view?

Also where would you draft Morata? I'd probably draft him just ahead of Coutinho?

In my opinion Aguero is still the number one striker for Man City. They both played together at the end of the season and it was Aguero up front with Jesus just off him or on the LW. I currently don't see Pep leaving Aguero on the bench and just playing Jesus up front.

Morata would be somewhere between 7-10 for me

Pav - Couple of Questions on this as a newbie to Drafting.

    1) You mention "not much time" to make your choices. How does this work - on a predefined day/time do you all have to make your choices? Can you select when this happens? I have players in the UK and US - how would we schedule it?
    2) I read the other article about unlimited streaming and such. Does it work in a similar way to FPL where you just make your selections once the week has ended? Is it effectively a race to pick the one you want to swap out, and first come first serve? And what if i want a player that's being swapped out by one of the other members of the league?

    Cheers
    Pez

Oh, one more question: What happens when you run the draft and someone gets moved to another country? How do you pick the substitute?

    2. Pav A Nice Day

      1) Drafts usually occur at a predetermined day/time set by the league manager and each player gets about 1 minute to choose their pick.
There are such things as "slow" drafts where players get hours to make their picks but these can take up to a week to complete. The season starts in 3 weeks so I doubt FPL will use this method.

      2) GMWK 1 is locked in on Friday 11th at 6.45pm. After that, the "waiver period" goes live until 1 day before GMWK 2, so Friday 18th. During that period (so Saturday to Friday), players can make waiver requests for available free agent players. At the end of the waiver period (Friday 18th), the waiver requests are made and you get the player you requested given nobody else put in a waiver for the same player, in which case whoever has the higher priority gets him. Also, at this time, the players that your league-mates dropped for free agents will become available and for the final 24 hours before the GMWK it becomes a first come first serve

      3) If you draft Sanchez and he moves to Bayern you're just screwed. You'll have to drop him and waiver a free agent midfielder

    De Gea/Heaton
    Kolscielny/Keane/Bailly/Moses/Mendy (if he goes)
    Eriksen Sane Mkhitaryan Klassen Snodgrass
    Kane Morata Vardy

There's no pricing in FPL draft. The problem is not squeezing them into a budget - its getting the players you want before your rivals do.

How on god's earth did you capture Kane, Morata and Eriksen all in the same team, how did you do the draft order? In our league Kane is guaranteed 1st/2nd pick, Morata will then be gone in the first round picks 3-8 due to the lack of top strikers and I fully expect Eriksen as one of the best midfielders in the league last year to be gone by the end of the second round if not the first!

Great post. We play a kind of auction version, using PL scoring. Everyone starts will £110m and then 'bids' for each player, starting from Cech downwards.

Something like this should save me blowing my budget on punts and starting the season with my main striker being someone like Borini. Again.

Another great article. I'm so eager to finally try the draft format. Hope there are some leagues here because my mates can't be bothered.
Does anyone know if the "max 3 players from the same team" rule will apply?

Can anyone make a case of a 9-team FPDL? The striker pool looks to reach #24 stretching it.

What are your thoughts on the best position to be in the Draft order? In our league we can choose (Based on another competition).
Initial instinct says 1st to get Kane; but maybe something like 3rd is better? That was you are assured of one of Kane, Lukaku or Aguero and then your 2nd pick is that much earlier.
    (I'm in a 9 team league so 3rd would give me a 2nd pick of 16th rather than 18th)

How come you have premium defenders like Alonso & Azpilicueta before Goalkeepers?

I thought you said it is more advantageous to pick Goalkeepers before Premium Defenders?

Looking for advice on ths trade in my 8 man draft. Kane for Sanchez + Mane. What do you think? My team right now is:
    Hart/Elliot Ake/lovren/Danilo/stone/Cedric
    Coutinho/ David silva/zaha/Willian/Walcott
    Kane/firmino/rondon

Just stumbled across this article when preparing for this years draft and this made me laugh:

    28. Mohammad Salah(MID17)-Difficult to see where he fits in regularly

I can understand him not being near the top, but below Manolo Gabbiadini? I'm sure last year in our draft he was picked up in the first round and I had my eye on him around 10th-12th as a target.

Wonder if anyone that was rated low by people this year will surprise us all!
