Line-Up Lessons – Gameweek 3 – Part Two

Pep Guardiola changs both formation and personnel – most pertinently in attack – as rotation begins to bite at Manchester City.

Mauricio Pochettino makes a similar move for Spurs, but it’s closer to business as usual for Manchester United, Southampton and a host of other sides.

Here’s part two of Line-up Lessons, assessing the teamsheets and formations from Gameweek 3, with one eye on what’s to come following the international break. Part one can be viewed here.

Manchester City

Starting XI: Ederson; Danilo, Kompany, Otamendi, Mendy; D Silva (Stones 90), Fernandinho, De Bruyne; B Silva (Aguero 66), Gabriel Jesus (Sane 82), Sterling. Subs not used: Bravo, Mangala, Toure, Delph.

  • What we saw: Pep Guardiola opted for a 4-1-2-3 system against Bournemouth, handing first starts to Benjamin Mendy and Bernardo Silva. Mendy played at left-back, with Silva on the right of a front three. Raheem Sterling was utilised on the left, with Gabriel Jesus favoured over Sergio Aguero as the central striker. David Silva and Kevin De Bruyne operated just in front of holding midfielder Fernandinho, while John Stones dropped to the bench due to the change in formation. Danilo started at right-back in the absence of the suspended Kyle Walker.
  • What we learned: The change in system still saw City struggle to overcome Bournemouth, leaving further question marks over how Guardiola will set up his side moving forward. Walker will return for the home meeting with Liverpool after the international break and will be expected to replace Danilo at right-back. A four-man defence doesn’t bode well for Stones’ prospects, while Bernardo Silva’s encouraging debut adds further doubt among the City attack. Leroy Sane certainly looks to be down the pecking order, while with the UEFA Champions League group stage starting next month, Jesus and Aguero could share minutes. Rotation in general looks a big concern along with De Bruyne’s deeper role that limits his influence around the penalty area.

Current Status: Unsettled
Risk Areas: Right-back, central defenders, attacking midfield, forwards

Manchester United

Starting XI: De Gea; Valencia, Jones, Bailly, Blind; Matic, Pogba; Mata (Rashford 67), Mkhitaryan (Fellaini 74), Martial (Lingard 77); Lukaku. Subs not used: Romero, Darmian, Smalling, Herrera.

  • What we saw: Jose Mourinho only made one adjustment for the visit of Leicester City to Old Trafford, with the in-form Anthony Martial getting a start on the left wing in place of Marcus Rashford. The United boss went with a 4-2-3-1 from the off, switching again to a 4-3-3 once Marouane Fellaini was brought on for Henrikh Mkhitaryan. Fellow subs Rashford and Jesse Lingard operated either side of central striker Romelu Lukaku.
  • What we learned: While Martial enjoyed an impressive outing, Rashford’s goal means he may come back into the side for the Gameweek 4 trip to Stoke City. Further changes appear unlikely, although with the Champions League group stage getting underway next month, we could begin to see some rotation. Phil Jones is playing with a minor ankle problem but is set to continue at centre-back as he is suspended for United’s first Champions League group stage matche. Eric Bailly is also banned for the opener, so they look to be assured starters over the next two Gameweeks.

Current Status: Very Settled
Risk Areas: Left wing

Newcastle United

Starting XI: Elliot; Manquillo, Lascelles, Clark, Mbemba; Hayden (Diame 82), Merino; Ritchie (Murphy 88), Perez, Atsu; Joselu (Mitrovic 72). Subs not used: Woodman, Gamez, Aarons, Saivet.

  • What we saw: Rafa Benitez handed a first league start to Joselu, with Dwight Gayle missing out due to illness. The rest of the Newcastle side was unchanged in a 4-2-3-1 formation as Chancel Mbemba continued at left-back.
  • What we learned: After picking up a first win of the season, changes are unlikely for the Gameweek 4 trip to Swansea City. Benitez will hope Florian Lejeune (ankle) and DeAndre Yedlin (hamstring) recover in time for the trip to south Wales, with Mbemba’s start looking most at risk. After impressing in the lone striker role, Joselu should get another chance to start after the international break. Jonjo Shelvey will be available again following his three-match ban, but he may have to wait for his chance, with Mikel Merino particularly impressive against the Hammers.

Current Status: Settled
Risk Areas: Full-backs, central defenders

Southampton

Starting XI: Forster; Cedric, Stephens, Yoshida, Bertrand; Davis, Romeu; Redmond, Lemina (Long 64), Tadic (McQueen 74); Gabbiadini (Ward-Prowse 70). Subs not used: McCarthy, Hoedt, Austin, Ward-Prowse, Boufal.

  • What we saw: Mauricio Pellegrino kept faith in the side that beat West Ham United 3-2, with Mario Lemina recovering from a gashed shin to start at the base of midfield in the 4-2-3-1 formation. The Saints boss brought on Shane Long on the right wing, with Steven Davis dropping back alongside Oriol Romeu, before the Republic of Ireland international replaced Manolo Gabbiadini as the lone striker and James Ward-Prowse took over down the right.
  • What we learned: Pellegrino has kept a settled side over his first three league matches, and that shouldn’t change radically as we head into September. Wesley Hoedt is expected to push for a start in central defence though, leaving either Jack Stephens or Maya Yoshida at risk. Charlie Austin was surprisingly unused against the Terriers, suggesting that Gabbiadini’s start remains secure. Ward-Prowse may find it difficult to force his way back into the starting XI.

Current Status: Settled
Risk Areas: Central defenders

Stoke City

Starting XI: Butland; Zouma, Shawcross, Martins Indi; Cameron (Ramadan Sobhi 70), Allen, Fletcher, Pieters; Shaqiri, Jese (Crouch 62); Choupo-Moting. Subs not used: Grant, Johnson, Berahino, Adam, Bojan.

  • What we saw: Mark Hughes made one alteration from the side that beat Arsenal 1-0 for the trip to West Bromwich Albion, with Bruno Martins Indi starting at the expense of Mame Biram Diouf. Geoff Cameron shifted across to right wing-back. Xherdan Shaqiri recovered from a hamstring problem to start in the front three. Peter Crouch came on to replace Jese shortly after the hour mark, with Choupo-Moting moving to the left. Hughes then switched to a 4-2-3-1 following the introduction of Ramadan Sobhi for Cameron. Zouma moved to right-back, while Sobhi was stationed primarily on the right wing, with Shaqiri drifting into a No 10 position.
  • What we learned: While Hughes looks set to favour a three-man defence, particularly now that Kevin Wimmer has joined the club, he can easily shift to a 4-2-3-1 during matches if needs be. Cameron could see more playing time at right wing-back, given Diouf’s tendency to be rash in the tackle. While Crouch scored the vital equaliser, the front three may stay unchanged for the visit of Manchester United to the bet365 Stadium following the break.

Current Status: Fairly Settled
Risk Areas: Central defenders, right wing-back

Swansea City

Starting XI: Fabianski; Fernandez, van der Hoorn (Routledge 70), Mawson; Naughton (Rangel 88), Carroll, Fer, Olsson, Clucas; Ayew, Abraham (McBurnie 78). Subs not used: Narsingh, Nordfeldt, Roque Mesa, Fulton.

  • What we saw: Swans head coach Paul Clement stuck with a three-man defence for the trip to Crystal Palace, with Mike van der Hoorn replacing the injured Kyle Bartley. Sam Clucas was handed his debut, taking over from Roque Mesa in central midfield in the 3-5-2 system. Van der Hoorn was replaced by Wayne Routledge for tactical reasons as the Swans moved to a 4-4-2. The substitute operated wide on the right, with Tom Carroll drifting over to the left.
  • What we learned: This was the second successive match in which Clement opted for a three-man backline, and after picking up a first league win of the season, he may well retain this system for the home clash against Newcastle United. Mesa and Leon Britton may struggle to get back into the side in central midfield, but Fernando Llorente is expected to be available – providing he remains in south Wales. Other new faces are expected over the next few days, though.

Current Status: Fairly Settled
Risk Areas: Central midfield, forwards

Tottenham Hotspur

Starting XI: Lloris; Trippier, Alderweireld, Vertonghen, Davies; Dier, Dembele (Sanchez 90); Eriksen (Winks 88), Alli, Son Heung-min (Sissoko 70); Kane. Subs not used: Vorm, Walker-Peters, Oakley-Boothe, Janssen.

  • What we saw: Mauricio Pochettino changed to a 4-2-3-1 formation for the home meeting with Burnley, with Eric Dier joining Mousa Dembele in the double-pivot in the absence of the injured Victor Wanyama (knee). Son Heung-min earned a first start of the season alongside Dele Alli and Christian Eriksen in the attacking midfield positions, while Kieran Trippier recovered from a knock to start at right-back. Davinson Sanchez was handed his Spurs debut late on.
  • What we learned: Pochettino is still trying to find the best formula this season, and a switch back to a 3-4-2-1 looks possible for the Gameweek 4 trip to Everton. Dier or Sanchez could start next to Toby Alderweireld and Jan Vertonghen in central defence, with Son dropping to the bench. Wanyama may start in central midfield, providing he’s passed fit. Further new additions are expected over the next 48 hours, which could change the picture further by the time Spurs play next.

Current Status: Fairly Settled
Risk Areas: Central defenders, central midfield, attacking midfield

Watford

Starting XI: Gomes; Femenia, Prodl, Kabasele, Britos; Doucoure, Cleverley, Chalobah; Richardlison, Gray (Deeney 83), Amrabat (Cathcart 28) (Carrillo 47). Subs not used: Pantilimon, Success, Watson, Capoue.

  • What we saw: Hornets head coach Marco Silva decided to use Miguel Britos at left-back in place of the suspended Jose Holebas, in what was again a 4-2-3-1 formation. But after Britos was sent off, Silva moved Kiko Femenia over to the left, with Craig Cathcart brought on to play at right-back. That change saw Tom Cleverley operate slightly wider on the right in more of a 4-4-1 system. Cathcart was then forced off with a knock just after half-time, Andre Carrillo making his Hornets debut.
  • What we learned: Britos will now miss the next three league matches due to suspension, although Holebas will return from his one-match ban for the Gameweek 4 trip to Southampton. Silva will hope that Younes Kaboul, Daryl Janmaat and Roberto Pereyra are all fit for the clash at St Mary’s to bolster his options.

Current Status: Fairly Settled
Risk Areas: Right-back, central defenders, left wing

West Bromwich Albion

Starting XI: Foster; Nyom, Dawson, Hegazi, Brunt; Barry; Phillips (McClean 75), Livermore, Morrison (Yacob 70), Rodriguez (Burke 88); Rondon. Subs not used: Myhill, Chadli, Field, Wilson.

  • What we saw: Baggies head coach Tony Pulis once again deployed a 4-1-4-1 formation for the home fixture against Stoke City, but he decided to hand a first league start of the season to Salomon Rondon. The Venezuelan operated as the lone striker, with Jay Rodriquez moving out to the left wing. The fit-again James Morrison also came into the starting XI in central midfield, replacing Sam Field. During the latter stages, James McClean came on to operate on the left, while Oliver Burke was handed his Premier League debut down the opposite flank.
  • What we learned: The decision to deploy Rodriguez out wide paid off for Pulis when the former Southampton man ghosted in at the far post to score his first Premier League goal for the club. Rodriguez and Rondon may be used in the same positions when the Baggies travel to Brighton in Gameweek 4, although Burke could come into contention for a start out wide. Claudio Yacob and Field remain viable starters in central midfield, while a new centre-back is likely if Jonny Evans departs the Hawthorns over the coming days. Gareth McAuley may also be in contention after the international break, having missed the start of the campaign due to a thigh injury.

Current Status: Slightly Unsettled
Risk Areas: Central defenders, central midfield, flanks, lone striker

West Ham United

Starting XI: Hart; Zabaleta, Collins, Ogbonna, Cresswell; Rice (Lanzini 46), Noble (Kouyate 71); Antonio, Ayew (Sakho 70), Fernandes; Hernandez. Subs not used: Adrian, Fonte, Masuaku, Obiang.

  • What we saw: Hammers boss Slaven Bilic chose to use Edimilson Fernandes on the left wing in the absence of the suspended Marko Arnautovic. He opted for a 4-2-3-1 formation, with Michail Antonio on the opposite flank, leaving Andre Ayew in a support striker role. James Collins was favoured over Jose Fonte in central defence. At half-time, Bilic decided the introduce the fit-again Manuel Lanzini, who replaced youngster Declan Rice and took over from Fernandes in the advanced midfield spot. Cheikhou Kouyate also made his first league appearance of the season off the bench.
  • What we learned: Following a dismal 3-0 defeat at St James’ Park, Bilic looks set to make changes for the home clash against Huddersfield Town. Lanzini and Kouyate could both return to the starting XI, with Fernandes and Rice perhaps most likely to make way. The West Ham boss will also hope Winston Reid recovers from a calf injury to return in central defence, with Collins in line to move back to the bench. Andy Carroll (hip) was believed to be close to a first-team return last weekend and could feature against the Terriers.

Current Status: Slightly Unsettled
Risk Areas: Central defenders, central midfield, attacking midfield, forwards

So, after much deliberation, the Wildcard is active. It was far from essential – nothing major was broken but, in the end, I decided to press the button.

    Here’s why…

I played it prior to GW4 last season and it worked for me. In previous seasons, I’ve regretted not playing it early and tortured myself as the weeks roll by on when to play it.

I had De Bruyne, Fraser, Dann and Kane all on a downward spiral for ownership and value.

I wanted to ride out the Firmino/Kane swing. I’ve seen enough of him to feel that he’s going to offer value now that penalties are secured and with Mane and Salah as runners to feed and provide crosses. Kane is dropping before GW4 and, if he fails to score at Everton, he’ll likely drop again soonafter. I wanted to manage this situation and maybe go back for Kane ahead of GW5 to pay 12.3.

I think that Thursday’s deadline could give us some interesting new angles. I might need to reconfigure my keepers if Newcastle make a signing and moves like Wimmer today have already highlighted that there could be some new value emerge. With the WC active, I might be able to get a chance to either move early for these, or re-allocate budget to allow for value to emerge.

International injuries and rotation are also a concern. Next week we will no doubt see some doubts arise and having the WC open means I can adapt the plans accordingly. Obviously we have more breaks to come and this applies then so it’s not exclusive to this period.

I’ll probably write more for the pre-amble. For now, let us know where you are with your WC thinking.

I’ve also launched a poll to see how we stand with WC’s active.

Hit the button myself on Sunday night, put firmino and morata in for some price hikes may keep not entirely sure yet but seems to be a decent time to do it with the break and new signings about to emerge

Ah you've made feel less regret about doing this myself!
I didn't wana beat myself up every time I saw Kane or KdB drop price. could lose 0.3-0.4 overall value in this window which could be crippling later on.
Also.. adaptability on the transfer window updates and Int injuries to come!

Yeah, it doesn't feel great at my end tbh but I put a lot of stock in preserving team value early as I saw the benefits of this last season.

I'm basically sticking with what worked back then.

I'm not shy with hits if it's broken but taking hits with the WC in the pocket is difficult.

I think with the gw21 cut off, it's possible you may be a little early tho some of the players mentioned above are s concern. Out of interest Mark what have been your transfers to date?

Also you now have pre-empted Kane in for gw5, which could backfire especially if Kane scores at Everton. We all know he will score it's just a case of when and how much, managers deconstructing a team right now may need a plan B, personally I feel the 0.2 potentially lost may not be the issue most think it is.
I'm slightly changing my strategy this year in not chasing tv, so I'll revert further down the line as to how this impacts my OR.

Yep, that's always the concern although I might go in with Eriksen and Alli in an attempt to cover a potential Spurs away win. I don't think they will win heavy at Everton - it's a tough gig so Kane's haul shouldn't run away into a monstrous score.

The flipside is far worse - all the big strikers play on Saturday. So if Kane does blank again and any of them deliver, then sales will be very quick during Saturday and into Sunday.

If I'm still on Kane at that point, I'm going to be pushed into an early transfer or swallow a 0.1 drop immediately having already lost 0.1 and facing a further drop prior to GW5 (in all likelihood).

It's all speculation of course and a goal at Everton would probably kill that scenario.

may consider bringing kane back before the start of the gameweek. for 0.1 or 0.2 cheaper. undecided! more info by then im sure. hopefully he'll get injured and I don't have to worry about it.

Go without him. Reconstruct the whole team and it looks great.
Ali & Erik, Pogba & Miki & Bailly plus strength around the squad will outscore Kane & LuKa

KDB is slightly different (although I'm not convinced he's playing any deeper than last season and if chances had been converted, he'd be up in the table) but I don't see why you would be bothered with short term falls in Kane. He's FPL royalty (and I'm an Arsenal fan). He is almost certainly still going to win the golden boot. So although I agree team value is important 1) it's not the be-all and end-all and 2) When having cash ITB really does matter at the end of the season, I'm guessing Kane's price will have accelerated upwards so minor falls now should be ignored.

Mark, are you going to doube up on Liverpool, or just go Firmino? Are you concerned about rotation?

Mane seems like he'll never get bouns points, Salah somehow misses in front of goal. Firmino has both assists and goals in him, he's the least expensive, and for me the best Liverpool option.

I wish I haven't went Ritchie > Antonio in panic, and saved those 1.5 itb. I would use them to do Gabbiadini to Firmino and I think my team would be ok after that.

Quite similar issues with my team as I had KDB, Fraser and Kane going into GW4 accompanied with uncertainty of future starts surrounding Stephens and Willian. However only made a saturday night transfer KDB -> Eriksen.

I'm waiting myself. Can't see too many problems that a single hit couldn't fix - eg Firmino and Swansea defender in for Stones and Gabbiadini.

To be honest- can't see too many issues with your team either that a couple of transfers wouldn't sort. KDB out frees up a nice wedge of cash too as part of a single hit.

I think the second int break looks better for team value and in terms of being armed with lots more information. Also some fixture swings around then look good - and helps to set up the team with December in mind then too re fixture congestion.

Too many variables at the moment - plus I want to see how Hazard fits in - sanchez move? Sterling move? Wil Wimmer be a good 4.4 option? Can Brighton provide cheap defenders? List goes on for me.

I agree Jonty. Tempted to wait for second international break despite of some issues in my team. I think players I'd like to ditch in the coming weeks Fraser, Willian (possibly Stephens if he loses his place) can be fixed with a hit if necessary.

I had Fraser, Dann, Kane and KDB all vulnerable to drops and I've convinced myself on Firmino up front. That was just enough for me. Just.

Plus it's positive. Could be an error but I'd rather make a mistake being positive than one sitting still. Those mistakes tend to be more painful for me.

I hear the comments about Sanchez and Hazard but, for me, Hazard is a likely no go - I like him but, for some reason, it never turns out well for me.

As for Sanchez, nobody really knows how that will end up and if he stays at Arsenal or goes to City, is anyone going to rip things up for him? It's either the chance of more displays like Sunday or the threat of rotation at City - not sure I want to spend 11.9 on either of those situations.

Would you have wildcarded if you had the same players vulnerable to drops but had Firmino already in your team? That's pretty much my situation and I decided not to wildcard yet.

Probably not because having Firmino in my frontline would probably have already re-distributed funds around my squad. As it is, if I'm to use the funds that he frees up, I've got to make multiple transfers.

Should have gone with him from the start but was convinced on Milner's starts and therefore had doubts on the penalty issue.

With those booked in and with Salah and Mane looking so strong as scorers and providers, I think Firmino is underpriced.

You did well to get him from the off.

What's your current frontline looking like then?

And when you bring back Kane, who will accompany him and Firmino, you think? Chicharito? Abraham? Gray? Wood?... or Lukaku anyway with a big fat expensive frontline?

I had Ritchie dropping too - but sometimes I think the market is wrong - just as it was with Salah's price dro before his haul.

Ritchie has good fixtures, got an assist with stats suggesting more to come. The sort of player I'd want to wildcard in not out.

            Points not pounds for me.

Exactly my motto this season. If you pick a team for most GW it would cost less than 100 million anyway.

Ignored the Jesus drop last week even though easy temptation to get Chicarito in, and it turned out well.

Also every week there are risers and fallers - but we can't wldcard every week.

The first week of the first international doesn't see drastic changes - there tends to be a lull then another wave at the end of it....same as any week.

For me a wildcard is to correct a failing team that requires at least 5 players to be moved on and replaced.

It's not about catching some price risers for me - that happens every week.

Completely agree. Every year I want to wildcard again 2 to 4 gameweeks after having just wildcarded. Its the nature of the game that players move in and out of form as do teams so your desire for players shifts as well. We cant wildcard every week so you really should use it just for mass urgent changes. The other critical point is that given we use the 2nd wildcard post GW30 this one has to last till then.

Difference is though Jonty, that at this point most of us lose 0.1 for each drop, as not many of our players have risen in price yet. If you wildcard now, and you get in those players who are on the up and potentially rises that 0.1 to give you a buffer, their potential price fall in a few weeks won't be such a big issue.

I've got 2m in the bank. Happy to look for value as well as big hitters too.

The transfer market is insane at the moment. Salah goes up one week, down the next. You can't attempt to keep up with something so volatile and so based on whims.

If say I wanted to keep Kane then his rises or falls don't bother me.

Also I avoided what people are going through with KDB - shipped for another pre GWK 3 to avoid such problems.

I think this is a key question. Only ehenbyou have at least 5 players that you need to move on, should you WC. It's a good simple rule.

If I apply that rule to myself... I have JWP, Frasier, Danilo & Hunemeir who aren't playing, so that's 4. Then I have Ramsey, Kola & Willian either of which may potentially not play.

Wasn't one of the lessons from last seasons number 1 player (sorry, I forget his name) that you shouldn't panic and sell players too soon? That basically form is temporary and class is permanent. Not that Kane has had a dip in form looking at the stats, just hasn't had the rub of the green. There are other factors for KDB, much of it around Pep's tinkering and misses by team mates but not Kane. Tottenham's stats speak for themselves.

I agree with you Jonty. In my years of playing the game, I have found the two occasions when I managed to save the WC up to the second intl break were the times when my WC was the most successful.

That year 3 season back when Southampton massacred Sunderland 8-0 (I had Pelle who got a brace; but not Tadic who scored and got 5 assists or something ridiculous) and City thrashed Spurs in the early game (I had Kun c who scored a hattie). Fond memories. I must admit I am getting twitchy, but as you say, nothing that a hit or two won't fix.

Also activated wildcard last night for similar reasons. Wanted to take a few players out such as KDB and gabbiadini and had my eyes on players like Eriksen and firmino. Also seemed good time to capitalise on morata and firmino price rises and Kane's price drop. I've had an average start and could argue I've used it too soon but for me there were at least 4 keys moves I wanted to make so seemed a good time.

Too early for me (w. Kaku and Kane, Mkhi and Eriksen). The reason is I cannot see a convincing team that can frog leap others in the next 4 weeks. Everything is far from certain, too far. No standout forward except Lukaku; certainly not Morata or Firmino, not yet. No standout midfielder (as I have the two I would long for). A wildcard now is no less a gamble than a wildcard next week. And wildcarding at a week when rotation will be ample (for returns from international duty) plus no Hazard, Coutinho, Sanchez in sight yet... for me its too, way too early...

You've taken control of a potentially tricky period, prevented at least a 0.5 drop in tv and now a healthy swing the other way ... that's why some people monitor your moves; watch and learn. My squad appears immune to drops atm [hopefully!] so I plan to hold on for now. I'm vulnerable to injuries though so it could all go wrong.

The theory is that you end up with potentially better players as well as a higher team value. Of course nobody can predict the future so either way it's a gamble. Much easier to correct with the extra money if you fail than vice versa

Hey Mark I think Im one of the lucky ones that opted for Firmino as a 3rd striker and dotn feel my team needs a WC currently. I do agree about building team value though although Im not Including Kane in that thinking. Im planning on building the value in the other player around Kane. Suppose its easy to say this when I have player like Alonso, Jones Firmino before there rises

I did last night too. Judicious use now will put us ahead of the curve. All the points are valid. Not ideal time but....

Also take out Kane @ Luka and see what you can do with defence @ midfield. That pitch will make a difference to Kanes output.

Morata plus stronger mids will bring in more points i reckon.

I've done the same, had KDB, JWP, Kolasinac, Kane and then a bunch of players that i'm not entirely happy with. Will probably punt on a striker for the captaincy next week and leave money itb to get Kane back in for GWK 5.

I think the biggest decision I'm likely to make is whether to keep Lukaku or double up on Pogba and Mikhy instead. Just scared of the ownership really.

It will be interesting to see how your wildcarded team does versus the other scouts non wildcarded teams over the coming weeks. A bit of additional variety in the scoutcast always adds extra interest 🙂

I played the wildcard this week last year, fortunately though this year I've felt like I've planned for the season much more effectively, and had a good start, so I won't be using mine yet. Starting with a 4-3-3 formation, keeping money itb, and having a spread of players from all the top 6 teams has given me enough flexability to adapt so far with free transfers alone.

Current wildcard thinking for me is at the next international break, or before the mad xmas schedule. Bringing in club stalwarts and ever present starters for that xmas period over more risky options could be a strategy i persue.

Theres been a decent amount written advocating wildcarding for the GW6 fixture list also. I'm not sure this is the best strategy any more though what with Arsenal looking so awful and Everton's cleansheet so unpredictable!

But you don't need a WC to prepare for the Christmas/New Year period, you just need to make sure you have a full squad of active players to cover for rotation.

With those stats explosion is imminent maybe not against Everton but surely soon after.

I see a lot of people saying that Kane is due to explosion and in that fear they captained him all the three weeks and now are reluctant to transfer him out.
But people are not considering the points loss that they have suffered due to this ideology.
You could have utilised the funds to build a better team without him and could have scored a lot of points.
Now if even Kane scores and if many people captain him(which I believe will not happen because of other good alternatives) I have already got a lead to the Kane owners. So if he explodes I can easily bring him in for the next week and at lower price too.

My team has players made of glass like Jones, Ramsey and to some extent Mane. Not too happy with King atm but he may pay off in the long run. Goalkeepers are a bit of a worry with Elliot and Begovic a weirdo combination.
But I don't think I need to activate a wildcard to fix the team. A -4 or at worst -8 should fix all the current and potential future problems.

I'm holding. I can see your point, but I think I will need my WC during second International break when Everton and Chelsea fixtures get better. I could get Alonso, Sigurdsson and Everton defender in. By this time we may see the real form of other teams like Arsenal for instance. Also all the new boys in PL will settle. Personaly I did Kane to Morata just to get him back for gw 5 for free and build some tv on these transfers. I have no other pressing issues in my team though and already had other risers so it was easier for me to avoid wildcarding

In my experince the first WC is best used early, to get rid of the droppers and get behind the risers. The main trends of players and teams are already quite clear, and doing a correction early, gives you 1m increase instantly, and probably another in the next couple of weeks, which your slow moving smart rivals wont catch in later 😉

i've got potential issues at the back (Stephens, Bavies, Hegazi,Dummett). First 3 could be at risk from new signings.

But I'm on my best start ever and only 1 key player hadn't delivered (KDB) and he's gone for Eriksen.

I don't see any players falling in value in my team but only a couple of potential risers so early team value may lag behind other FPL sides that are WCing now.

I think I want to keep WC because some key issues are coming up.
As a non-owner want to see how far Kane drops, Sanchez goes to City how quickly he settles and where does he play, Hazard impact on return - all these are important as would take 2 transfers to get into side (financially).
Other thing is I can see a lot of potentially interesting transfers before window closes and again would like a little time to evaluate them.

Only thing that could obviously change this scenario atm is the dreaded international break injuries.

Jonty what are you thoughts on keeping Kolasanic and Willian? They are the 2 I really don't know what to do with now? Maybe another game weeks data will help!

They are exactly two players that require more data.

Willian could still get starts when Hazard comes back. Could it be that Pedro makes way? Its an unknown -but we will know in a couple of gwks. He's still great value at 7m so would be a shame to dump then see him make multiple starts and fire in free kicks.

Kolasinac - the same - will he be llcb, cb, lb, lwb - we don't know as Wenger's team sheet is up in the air - it'll settle after the transfer window. He could be gold - re baseline bonus. Or he could be dropped and Koscielny proves the better option. Once again - GWK 4-5 should answer that - or at least give a better indicated than gwk 1-3 have.

With Oxlade leaving for Chelsea, I would hold onto both for now. Kola might take oxlades place at LWB. By not playing in that horror show against Pool his stock has probably actually risen haha!

last year they kept getting private jets back etc.
don't think many of the "big clubs with jets" rested players straight after an international.

            I agree there's a risk.

I'd like to see how Firmino line up a few more times before going for Firmino. That said I don't have any Liverpool and am hurting.

I just can't see my team (or Mark's) looking better for GW4 with a WC now. Going forward it might work out but with so much uncertainty, and really not a much better GW4 team, I think it's better held

And a few days before CL, and next games a de with days after... I understand the Firmino love but I will not start every game in the league, not a chance.

Id say Chicharito and Vardy will.

This is why iv wildcarded im happy with probably 70% of my team but rather than lose value on Kane a wildcard protects that, it gets on the people i want and can make a decision if they are staying in my team in 10 days time.

The transfer window is going to throw up a bargain that we didnt expect and I really dont want to have the wildcard hanging over me for weeks i'll use it now and its done then.

Hello mate, just updated link. One major regret is Fernandez over Naughton. I thought Swansea were going to sign Santiago Arias who'd displace him. Looks like that's not happening now.

I can see the reasoning. I've already done KDB to Pogba and am now left with Kane and Dann about to drop tonight and Willian, Ramsey that need shifting as well.

Trouble is, I'm happy with rest of the team so am more inclined to take a hit. Dann has two very good fixtures next. Kane will start scoring. Do I just absorb those drops hoping they'll rise again?

If I wildcard I'll only be doing it for 4 people really as I'll want Kane back in when his price drops. That seems too little in week 3...

            3. Econ Man

I hit the button myself, and I think this quote nails it: "I played it prior to GW4 last season and it worked for me. In previous seasons, I’ve regretted not playing it early and tortured myself as the weeks roll by on when to play it."

Actually I think there is a case to be made that more informed managers should use the wildcard earlier than others. Honestly I feel like already most of the pieces have fallen into place.

Kane seems the best option for captain (simply expected to score the most points until the end of the season). Lukaku on pens could possibly rival him, but he is probably off them, making him a lot less attractive (Sanchez is another potential rival). Whereas most people are worried about Kane blanking, I see huge xG numbers (see understat.com) and unlucky finishing. But isn't that just bad finishing and form? That sort of thing just isn't predictive of future performance, underlying xG numbers are. Over the course of his career Kane has handsomely outperformed xG, and even then, by this estimate (http://statsbomb.com/2017/07/quantifying-finishing-skill/), he is only 90 % likely to be an above average finisher. 3 games is nothing, and we can still expect him to roughly match or slightly outperform his xG numbers.

As far as other players go, I think for me Pogba is now ahead of Mhkitariyan, as he is likely on pens. If I knew they played an equal amount of minutes I would prefer Mhkitariyan though. Firmino looks like a must-own. He is on pens and racking up the bonus points - could be sensational (200+). And then the Mane vs. Salah thing... I'm going for Mane, but would actually prefer Salah if not for the fact I feel Mane is more nailed. I might very well downgrade later. I don't know how others feel about Alonso, I have been hesitant because of some slight rotation risk and the the fact they might buy a left-back. For me that worry would be alleviated if Chelsea buy Chamberlain. Alonso would then be the only natural left footed wing-back they have, which I think would ensure minimal rotation.

Have made an early WC in the past for TV reasons but am trying it differently this time. Have KDB, Kane and Lacazette but they have some nice fixtures and I know what will happen if I drop them!
Also, with a nice TV in April last season I felt myself forced into using it all on expensive players rather than going on form, so I'm not sure if high TV is that important really....time will tell of course.

I'm in France and have limited internet. Everyone is saying they've 'pushed the button'. I've made a tonne of transfer to gain team value and am planning to wildcard at the end of the international break to clear the transfers so I can gain team value. Is this what everyone else is doing? I'm slightly panicked =/

Hit the button whenever you want. You will get the price rises regardless.
Doing loads of transfers now only to hit wc at last minutes is just silly jiggery pokery, perpetuated by some on this site.

I'm in a similar position, infact my team is in a worse state than yours ( yours didn't look that bad) but my worries are coutinio, hazard and Sanchez come into play soon. Value is an issue for me at moment but maybe I'll take the odd rare hit to start building it now. Gw21 seems such a long way and there are players like pogba vs mkhy , alli vs erikksen I'm still unsure about.

It's a big decision and if I was doing it I probably should have last night.

Activated pretty much the minute I saw what happened with Ramsey and Kola, which was a last straw thing.

I feel you have to put your hand up on accepting starting mistakes. I piled into Man City with KDB and Jesus (are either great options at their price now?). I took gambles on Kola and Danillo not knowing much about them at all. I had Zaha and RLC (unlucky perhaps but Palace are a mess). I have Stephens in that 3 into 2 situation now. And no Liverpool attack at all seems a massive mistake.

I can put this all right at a stroke with a WC, probably reinvest the money into a less top heavy setup and avoid hits (at 2.7M the last thing you feel like is falling back before a ball is kicked).

Last season I was in worse shaped than this, played WC and got to 2424. I am hoping lightening strikes twice.

GW10 looks the best time for a WC this year imo

Firmino is under valued yes but so much so that you can also get him later, international break probably means his minutes next up are limited and you know it will be his turn at rotation soon enough

My WC is activate and there are tough choices to make.

I'm going Morata + Firmino up front and that leaves one spot for Kane or Lukaku.

Do I try to go with Lukaku and try to "cover" Kane with Alli + Eriksen, or vice verse with Kane + Pogba + Mkhi? Leaning towards the latter as I prefer Kane as a captain in the fixtures coming up.

The reason I'm holding mine is not that I love my team it's just that in these early stages you don't know which bandwagon's wheels are going to fall off, and which underperforming starts are going to start delivering hauls. If you play your WC now you are kind of stuck with the stars of GWs 1-3 until Christmas, barring little transfers and the odd hit.

If I had a WC active, for example, I would probably ditch Kolasinac, but because I don't and Arsenal have a tasty fixture coming up (and the fact he will surely start after this weekend's disaster) I also don't mind holding too much. If he hauls then everyone will be scrabbling to get him in, Alonso-style.

The WC to gain value is a valid strategy so good luck with that.

What I don't agree with is your suggestion that you will go without Kane in gw4 but buy him in gw5. In my opinion, a WC should be setting you up for a number of weeks and planning a transfer straight after seems a risk you don't need to take as injuries/suspensions invariably happen.

Also, Kane plays at home in the second international. Compare that to Firmino who is off to South America with a manager who is happy to rotate and has already shown that he is happy to play the likes of Sturridge if fit. Would we really be that surprised if Firmino doesn't start in gw4?

I also had KDB, Fraser and Kane but decided not to WC. I did really bad last season taking the early WC and took me 20 GWs to recover. This season I planned for the first 5 GWs with a double transfer in GW3 if needed.

I did KDB > Pogba and Dummet > Hegazi and decided to keep Kane and transfer Fraser next GW. I think Kane will find his confidence against Malta so he gets at least another week for me.

I've dodged the bullet a bit as I had Vardy, Foster, double Saints defence, double Liverpool attack(firm and salah) and Mkhi so my rank is ok(600k) considering 3 weeks of Kane(c) and no Lukaku.

But I think there are going to be a lot of people sitting on 0.1 rises on players they really don't want and will ship out before the next game week. The WC will be a safeguard against the price drops rather than making a killing on price rises imho

Almost hit the button but ended up only did Kane to Firmino last night to avoid the price drop and catch Firmino's price rise. Hopefully will bring back Kane again in GW5 (if he can produce something against Everton) at a lower price. Not many concerns in my team at the moment so willing to wait until the next international break before I activate my wildcard. By that time, I should have more information on how all the new signings will affect lineups as well as a few value options that could emerge within the next few weeks.

I've had an awful start and 2.7m overall and was very close to WCing last night but I think I can sort the big part of it out with a -4. I'll take some value loss but i've never WCed early and so it's feel unfamiliar to me and not entirely necessary this time round.

The point you make about the positivity of changes depends on your point of view. You can have positivity with sticking to your guns or saving a WC for a more productive change in the future.

                It's a close one.

Played mine in the build-up to GW3. It's a risky strategy but I want to build value, there's many different ways to play FPL and this is the one that works for me.

Had a strong GW1 but poor GW2. Had several issues with my team and many players on my watchlist were going up in price and would simply have become unaffordable if I'd have waited.

Made 10 changes with the wildcard and my total value is now 101.3, closest to me in both cash mini-leagues is 100.6.

It's not just building the value to sell later on, in many cases it's given me a 0.1 buffer against price drops that will mean I'm not looking to take a hit to protect value. None of the players I have are currently have a going down in price they're all either going up or very stable in price.

No one has any idea if your wildcard will work or not Mark.

Two years ago my brother played a GW2 WC and killed it from there on in, bringing in Payet and Andre Ayew among others who just kept scoring points.

Personally I have a similar team I think - Dann, KdB, Kane, Eliot, Jesus. I have 2 FT and may take my first hit for 3 FT.

Planning on wuldcarding in the second international break so I'm not too bothered about price drops meanwhile.

And let's not Grover that last week's must buys - Chicharito and Eriksen - both blanked.

Two weeks too early in my humble opinion mark. Could still work. No real problems that kdb Fraser to 2 good mids couldn't fix. I'd want to see how the new signings settle in. Not enough data at this stage imho.

Sanchez going to city might help you. Keep an eye on future fixture swings. Arsenal, Chelsea, Everton.

I played my WC on Saturday.

My team had Kolasinac, Danilo, KDB, Fraser, Ince and Kane.

I played it prior to GW4 in 2016 and finished 98th. I had a really mixed bag in 2017 with a poor WC and too many hits. I've started poorly so far this season and hope looking backwards is the answer.

Played mine too. Currently on 433 as don't like any of the mid price midfielders:

                  Fabianski (Elliott)
                  Jones, Alonso, Hegazi, Yoshida (Mbemba)
                  Salah, Mkhi, Eriksen (Chalobah) (Carroll)
                  Morata, Lukaku, Firmino

I'm not surprised you hit the button Mark. I think price is forcing the issue for profit and loss.

I wrote the following to Jonty but may have misplaced it on the site.

Hi Jonty. Can someone please explain what is going on with pricing. Kane is now 300K TXOs and no price drop. Jesus drops 80k in GW2 n drops £0.1. Less volatile than last year but Price rises seem swifter than falls. Doesn't make sense and spoils the game for me! I play as a tfair challenge to ability n experience with the random being football results. I don't enjoy an apparent bias and randomness in pricing which ultimately affects my selections. Why can't this be set to a price:ownership ratio? Even if logarithmic?Sorry if this is posted on wrong area. Been part of community for 2 years played 4 seasons but still new to posting.

To add further. It affects my selections to the point that I have WC now to gain £ and assure assets before going up. It's my biggest WC factor and I suspect a high factor for Mark and others WC decision too!

My team was half way to how I wanted it through an 8pt hit GW2 and a 4pt hit GW3. But I could already see options slipping away through price rises. So the button pressed some players selected to cover price rises and others out to avoid drops. Some risers will be changed by GW4 hopefully bagging a couple of 0.1 rises. Doubt those opportunities would be there if I waited later.

                Steve

              Posting for new article

How likely is it that Arsenal keep playing three at the back?

I was thinking Kola have to start next game, but if Wenger goes back to four at the back I don't necessarily think that's the case. Kosc will always be playing as left cb so would mean Holding, Mertesacker or Mustafi if the latter two are available. That would make Monreal left back, wouldn't it?

I think for Wenger to go back to four at the back would be a major back pedal. I think he's sold the three man defence as the "solution" and I'm not sure he'll back out just yet.

But, after Sunday's disaster, who can really know what the reaction and fall-out will be.

                  Thanks for pitching in!

Yeah I'd hope so as it served us well end of last season. Just worried he feels inclined to do something and with his comments about dominating the game after ht, having reverted to four at the back I'm worried... I've been decent at second guessing him the last few years but this season has left me clueless

After the game he admitted his team was all wrong, 3 at the back got mauled so there's a very strong case for him to revert back to a 4.

I agree, but have Kolasinac on my team and trying to work out the likelihood of him playing. It comes down to if I need to wildcard or not, or what moves need to be done to avoid

What criteria do you guys use for a 4.5 - 5 defender? It seems that all the defenders in this price bracket would average the same points across the season (say for example Mee, Dawson, Lowe, Zanka etc. is there really a stand out defender from this lot?) It just seems to me in this price bracket you can just choose anyone and hope for the best. In previous seasons I used to keep using my FT getting defenders in this price bracket in and out, but i just realised that it may be redundant and it should be a slot where you buy him for the whole season and not touch it again. What you guys think?

              DDG (Elliot)
Bertrand – Stephens – Suttner (Daniels – Long)
Eriksen – Willian – Ramsey – TCarroll (Fraser)
              Kane – Lukaku - Firmino

              1FT
              bank: 0.5

what transfers should I be looking at?
              Thinking about Ramsey & Willian ➡ Pogba & Ritchie (-4) - thoughts?
              Eventually Fraser ➡ Brady?

Hypothetically, if city used Aguero to get Sanchez, how would Arsenal line up with Kun and Lacazette?

Thanks! I'm thinking B as well. No idea who to get below 7.5. Only worry is selling Bailly who did so well for me.
