Injuries

The Treatment Table – Gameweek 3

Jose Mourinho reveals that Phil Jones has been playing through the pain barrier for Man United. Everton’s number one Jordan Pickford withdraws from international duties with a muscle problem, while Eden Hazard is destined to step up his recovery with minutes for Belgium against Gibraltar.

Here’s the latest on the injuries influencing Fantasy managers’ plans.

New Arrivals

After seeing his side chalk up a third successive win and clean sheet on Saturday, Jose Mourinho revealed that Phil Jones has been playing through the pain barrier in the heart of defence:

“For years and years and years he was injury prone and he has a problem now, he’s complaining about an ankle problem so he’s the kind of player where we need to have him always in our hands with a lot of care from the medical department, the fitness coach, my assistants in the gym, working on prevention and recovery”.

In spit of his manager’s words, Jones has since allayed any concerns over a possible injury by joining up with the England squad. After being assessed by the medical staff, reports suggest he has been passed fit to feature.

However, reports yesterday confirmed that he was one of four players who missed England’s latest training session as a precaution. Given that Spurs’ Kieran Trippier was also included in the quartet, it seems likely that these players’ are being managed in light of recent injury concerns rather than any new setbacks.

Already up to 5.1 in Fantasy Premier League, the former Blackburn Rovers man has been acquired by a further 39,000 since Saturday’s deadline passed as the most budget-friendly route into United’s resilient rearguard.

And his record alongside Eric Bailly shows just why. If you factor in last season and the summer friendlies, the Red Devils haven’t conceded in over 10 hours with the pair both on the pitch.

Indeed, with both centre-halves banned for the first Champions League match, Mourinho has confirmed that Chris Smalling and Victor Lindelof will start together against FC Basel on September 12.

That match occurs three days after a Gameweek 4 trip to Stoke and five days prior to their Gameweek 5 home clash with Everton, suggesting that – providing he continues to steer clear of the treatment room – Jones looks in the box seat to retain his spot alongside Bailly for domestic duties at present.

Elsewhere, Spurs’ Victor Wanyama missed Sunday’s home draw against Burnley, with Mousa Dembele and Eric Dier utilised in central midfield once again.

Surprisingly, Mauricio Pochettino has yet to start with a wing-back formation this season. He rolled out 4-2-3-1 set-ups in Gameweeks 1 and 3 and opted for a 4-3-3 against Chelsea, with Wanyama the deepest of the central three behind Dembele and Dier.

Indeed, Dier has now been utilised in central midfield in all three fixtures, with the Chelsea encounter the only time that Wanyama has been fit enough to start.

However, the recent arrival of Davinson Sanchez could now see a change in tactics. The new boy played the last few minutes off the bench against the Clarets, but with Pochettino seemingly reluctant to play Dier in defence, Spurs could now operate with a three-man backline away to Everton next time out.

With Swansea, West Ham, Huddersfield and Bournemouth in the next five, their prospects of clean sheet returns could be on the rise, particularly if Wanyama can recover from a knee problem in time to feature at Goodison.

Meanwhile, Aaron Ramsey was replaced at the break in Arsenal’s loss at Anfield after sustaining a calf complaint.

He is set to miss a training session for Wales, but local press indicate this is no more than a precaution and that Ramsey is expected to recover to feature.

Although the Gunners’ back-to-back defeats at Stoke and Liverpool are hardly encouraging for would-be investors, the upcoming schedule affords them an immediate chance to build momentum again.

Arsene Wenger’s side host Bournemouth, West Brom, Brighton and Swansea in the next seven Gameweeks, which could yet bring them onto our radars.

Priced at just 7.0 and owned by only 3% of FPL managers, Ramsey’s form in front of his own fans also bodes well if he can avoid injury – he’s scored in each of Arsenal’s last two league matches at the Emirates.

Over the last 24 hours, Everton’s Jordan Pickford has withdrawn from the England squad to face Malta and Slovakia after sustaining a muscle problem. His Toffees’ team-mate Mason Holgate is out of the England U21 squad due to a minor ankle injury.

West Ham’s Manuel Lanzini has also withdrawn from Argentina duties due to a knee problem. Now down to 6.9, Lanzini was handed his first outing of the season off the bench against Newcastle United last weekend after recovering from a similar complaint.

It may be no more than a precaution by the Hammers as they look to bounce back from three successive losses. A potential setback for their playmaker could force a reassessment of their potential, however, as Slaven Bilic’s side prepare to host Huddersfield and Swansea in the next four Gameweeks.

Elsewhere, a handful of peripheral Fantasy figures are early concerns ahead of Gameweek 4. Arsenal’s Alex Iwobi, Bournemouth frontman Benik Afobe and Huddersfield wide man Rajiv Van la Parra, along with Palace and Watford defenders James Tomkins and Craig Cathcart, all picked up problems over the weekend.

In Recovery

Eden Hazard continued his recovery from an ankle injury with a run-out for the Chelsea reserves on Friday night. With Hazard yet to feature for the champions this term, Antonio Conte has allowed him to join up with Belgium in a bid to step up his match fitness:

“I had a conversation with Roberto Martinez, and I think now it could be positive for Eden to go with the national team and have the training sessions, and then maybe to have the possibility to play a part of the game with Gibraltar. He is the Belgium captain and the most important thing is to continue to work and improve and then after the international break, to have the possibility to have him on the bench and to start to think of him as a new player for Chelsea this season.”

Speaking to Chelsea TV, Hazard is hoping to earn pitch-time for Thursday’s home encounter against Gibraltar:

“I need time. Maybe not a lot, but I need a little bit of time. So, I’m ready to play. I just want to play. I miss football. I want to touch the ball and feel good. It can be good [to play against Gibraltar] just to feel the sensation [of playing] again. Just to play football. I just want play and have fun.”

Hazard’s absence has allowed Willian to start all three Gameweeks so far, but with just a single assist to his name, the Brazilian is already the third most transferred-out midfielder since the weekend. With the Belgian back in contention, his role now looks under real threat again.

And Hazard’s return will also force a reassessment of the best route into Conte’s attack.

Two goals and a pair of assists have earned Alvaro Morata substantial backing – he’s the second most acquired player since Saturday, with over 159,000 new owners. Yet Hazard’s spot-kick duties, allied with their very similar prices (10.5 to 10.1) may persuade many to overlook the summer signing for their three-man frontlines.

Bournemouth skipper Simon Francis could return after the break to hand manager Eddie Howe a defensive dilemma.

The Cherries boss moved to a wing-back formation at home to Manchester City last weekend, with Tyrone Mings at centre-half and Adam Smith and Charlie Daniels patrolling the flanks.

With a trip to Arsenal up next, Francis could oust Mings in the three-man defence, thus allowing Smith to retain his position on the right, with such a system now placing big question marks over the pitch-time of Ryan Fraser. The Scot had started 18 of the previous 22 league outings prior to dropping to the bench against City.

Florian Lejeune narrowly missed out on Newcastle’s weekend win over West Ham, having failed to recover from a hamstring problem. However, the Frenchman’s imminent return could be concerning for Chancel Mbemba’s raft of new owners.

Priced at 4.0, the latter is the second most transferred-in (82,000+) defender in the Gameweek after serving up nine points at home to the Hammers. Yet if Lejeune and/or Paul Dummett can prove their fitness in time for the trip to Swansea, there’s a chance that Mbemba – who was a sub in Gameweek 1 prior to the pair’s respective injuries against Spurs – could soon be back on the bench.

Fernando Llorente missed Swansea’s 2-0 win over Palace as he continues his rehabilitation from a fractured arm. In his pre-Gameweek 3 press conference, though, Paul Clement revealed that the Spaniard “will be ready” after the international break, potentially placing him in contention to host Newcastle next time out.

But with rumours growing of a switch to Chelsea, Llorente’s future could have a knock-on effect on our transfer plans.

If he stays, an upcoming run of five very favourable home matches in eight (NEW WAT HUD LEI BRI) could bring him into contention at 7.5 in the mid-price bracket.

Yet if Llorente does depart, strike duo Tammy Abraham and Jordan Ayew – at just 5.5 and 5.0 respectively – could now offer excellent value as cut-price picks if Clement continues with two up top. Indeed, the pair both opened their accounts for the campaign with a goal apiece away to Crystal Palace.

Over 39,000 FPL managers have already sold on Ruben Loftus-Cheek since the deadline passed, after the Palace midfielder missed the home loss to Swansea with a groin problem.

Loftus Cheek remains the most popular sub-5.0 midfielder, but his ownership has now dropped from 14% to 9% since he was ruled out last Friday.

With a further 38,0000 shipping team-mate Wilfried Zaha over the last few days, the Eagles’ run of three straight losses under Frank de Boer has sparked a collective loss of faith. Trips to Burnley and both Manchester clubs, allied with a visit from Chelsea in the next five, suggest the exodus will continue.

Bench three from this team for the next gw:

    Foster(benching Elliot)
    Jones, Davies, Alonso, hegazi, mbemba
    Eriksen, mkhit, Richarlson, Phillips, Carrol
    Kane, lukaku, chicarito

I'm considering double west brom defence away to Brighton, thoughts?

High risk, high reward scenario with the double West Brom def. Consider diversifying by swapping Hegazi for Naughton for his kind fixtures, value, and advanced playing position.

    Currently:

    Elliot
    K-Trip / Alonso / Dawson
    Alli / Pogpog / Mane / Richarlinson
Little Pea / Lukaku / Lacazette

My issue is this... Laca and Pea have good fixtures next week but face potential price drops. Meanwhile replacements face potential price rises. Help please:

    1) Save FT
    2) Just K-Trip out to someone, I'm thinking Bertrand
    3) Go mental. Trip to Naughton, Laca to Morata, Pea to Firmonho, Mane to Salah to make room (WC or -12)

Next international break between gw7 and gw8? Looks a very promising wildcard time, Utd and spurs fixtures turn tough, and Chelsea and Everton turn very favourable. Could be a complete revamp on the cards.

I read few posts and articles about WC and prices.
First thing about playing WC is do you really need it? As we can see price changes are very slow and one of the reason is, if I'm correct, that WC doesn't affect prices. So there is no sense to WC now if your main reason is to get price risers. Second thing is that we have not enough data yet. Transfer market is still open so some late transfers may change the look of PL starting elevens and we will get proper info in next 2-3 GWs. Than there is UCL/EL factor. We don't know yet what players are going to be rotated, how often etc so again - we will get more data after at least one UCL/EL game. Next thing is - Kane/Lukaku. Many loose at least one of them on their WC and spread the money so if for example Kane explodes and score a brace next game everyone will make at least one hit to get him back as soon as possible cuz price will go high very fast. So basically there is a big risk that using WC now we will make more bad than good for our teams and only thing we get is maybe (with some luck) about 0.3 for 2-3 players with double rise.
Next international break is perfect for WC (assume that our team is quite ok and one hit will do the trick especially with KDB money there for many of us). Price risers will be much higher as most already used their WC and we will get much more data about things that I write above.

I agree I've seen some good teams getting wildcarded for the sake of value and their own assumptions on players getting dropped .unless your team is in bits then 3 weeks is a tad early imo with no real data and players coming back but each to their own. Hope the next 18 gws goes well 🙂

A few random thoughts on this.

Last season more FPL managers used their Wildcard prior to GW4 than in any other GW apart from 21 - the final GW that the first Wildcard could be used. So it's been the most popular time in the past. Doesn't mean its the right time. Also, all those Wildcards do slow the price rise and falls I believe.

The second international break is also a great time to play it but there's one thing it doesn't have - the transfer window. Its possible we will see moves that will mean that this period is busier than ever for transfers - Sanchez to City, for example, would shake things up to another level and perhaps push more folk into the market next week.

If players like Firmino, Morata, Pogba, Mky etc keep scoring heavily, then by GW 6 their price could be up by 0.3-0.5. Equally, they could fall if they stop scoring so you play the Wildcard now and back the former. If those players are still in form by GW6, it's a good bet that Wildcarders then will be paying more. If you have them already, all good - I only had or have one.

Personally, I know from past seasons that, if there's players I like and want - like Firmino - and I think that they might go on rising in price, I know I'm going to want them before the Wildcard. Transfers can be used but, when that player is best exploited by freeing up budget or re-allocating funds across the squad, the Wildcard is the best route to acquiring them. I don't want to buy Firmino and have 2.0m in the bank, he's best exploited by immediately spreading that cash, perhaps across multiple slots.

The other thing I've found, which might be unique to me - is that, when I have the WC in my pocket, I'm less prone to taking hits because it almost feels more wasteful. That often means I'm more cautious with transfers and, sometimes, that can lead me to missing out. Equally of course, that can work out but my transfer policy is quite aggressive and I like to feel confident when taking hits, not worry that I should be using the WC instead.

You could argue people are still unlikely to bring Sanchez in 1) because of his form/fitness 2) if he goes to city you'd want to see how he fits in first. Likewise, for Firmino - the impact of Coutinho possibly staying and CL rotations. I just think there's no enough data for people to wildcard yet, especially with price rises being slow this year.

The one thing I would say in response is that we don't yet know how the transfers made will slot into their new sides. This will take 1-3 gameweeks to assess. It may be that if Sanchez does move to city, the biggest impact may be in ways we don't expect - i.e. Iwobi might become a nailed on Arsenal attacker and Sanchez forms a brilliant partnership with Jesus. People might assume Wimmer is going to start for Stoke and wildcard him in now, only for he to be cover for Shawcross, Indi and Zouma. We've also seen several sides experimenting with 3 at the back - Bournemouth and Swansea for example. Its yet to be seen if this is temporary or a pernament move.

            this.
We will have pretty limited knowledge of most of the overseas players coming in.
Not a lot of idea of formation changes based on new personnel. Are WBA & Stoke going 3 at the back?
Guessing now who the new signings are replacing in starting line-ups - Hoedt at Saints a classic example with more than a few on here owning Saints assets.
There's a case for saving the WC to react to changes created by the transfer window.

Exactly. Theres a few immediate questions over Spurs: will they go 3 at the back more often with Sanchez signing, and is Trippier now a rotation risk with Aurier signing? I think stoke are going 3 at the back, yes, although they do switch it up during matches. I think WBA have made a brilliant signing with the polish DM, but as you say it remains to be seen if this precludes a change in formation. Even if it doesn't, will McAuley and Evans (if not sold) come back into the side at the expense of Hegazi?

All fair comments Mark. The last I hadn't even taken into consideration. I been playing 10 years too and I always leave it later myself but I know some of the players like yourself , who regularly finish well do have a vision and a reason for doing it.

Just for me id rather wait to see what happens after the window closes and gather that extra data. Pogba and co maybe great now but when hazard and coutinio come back it may require more hits and the need to absolutely undo your wildcard in order to accommodate them. I haven't seen your wc but I know a few who are balancing all the squad at kanes expense before this unbelievable run of games he has. How are they going to bring him back without hits galore?

I guess it comes down to how you play the game. I'm a bit of a dullard and cautious , maybe more a Jonty type player if you will. Hope it works out for you whatever happens

Last year I used the wildcard over the first international break because it seemed a good time - Aguero suspended for 3 matches, it was a time to get Sanchez in and restructure the team. I haven't seen the need yet this year. Maybe that will change if a lot of transfers take place by the end of tomorrow, but even so I don't envisage anything that can't be sorted with a hit or two.

By the second international break I'll have more data for those new transfers etc. For now, despite there being a couple of players I want (Firmino and Alonso mainly), I'm happy to wait and take the odd hit or two when necessary.

My question would be that surely if there's the transfer window to factor in during the first international break, then it can actually be a relatively difficult time to play it because you are not certain as to who the definite starters are, or when they will become definite starters.

For example, Aurier and trippier - on a WC during the international break, I wouldn't know who to pick as it's unclear who first choice is. You would imagine that it would be Aurier in time, but how long that timeframe is, is pretty uncertain.

          Food for thought anyway!

Dont think there is right or wrong time, yeah price risers can be higher but can you afford(Alonso/Miki/Pogba/Mane/Firmino/Morata etc.) when they will all cost at least 0.2 more.

Dont think there will be many risers that GW,even if there are hit or two will help.

If you have noe one out of Alonso/ Miki/ Pogba/ Mane/ Firmino/ Morata tha of course - WC mate!
As I said "assume that our team is quite ok and one hit will do the trick" and of course there is no "right time" to WC but like I said - no enough data and no big price rise - a big wait for me.

My take is that a wildcard is a precious thing to use strategically around fixtures (double gameweeks) or when your team is a mess.

Its not about value for me....but if it was then I'd use it the second transfer window rather than this one.

Mr T did this excellent analysis into the best times to wildcard and the sort of value returns you can expect.

      http://fantasyfootballpundits.com/early-season-fpl-price-change-trends-and-implications-for-wildcard-strategy/

He found that the the first international break is generally woeful for price rises. It was worst of the early weeks in 2015/16 and second worst in 2014/15. There were just 1 and 3 multiple rises in those seasons respectively.

That all changes for the second and third international breaks - he found that they were in fact the weeks that saw the most multiple risers.

In terms of falls, he found that there were more falls in the first international break than the second….but that continues for another few weeks, which doesn't make the first international break stand out.

Gameweeks 1-7 are the key times for falls – they drop off markedly by the end of that period.

So if you are using your wild card to counter falls in GWK 4 then you have three more weeks of potential falls to counter as well.

If you are wildcarding for price rises you will catch more lucrative returns by waiting, according to the evidence.

So if Mr T's analysis is repeated this year then the first international break is one of the worst times to wildcard based on value - and the best is in early October - when the market will also be less skewed by wildcards.

New chip for next season perhaps. The reverse a chip chip 😉

I've been getting people sending me RMTs on Twitter this week asking whether they should wildcard to catch price rises - the teams they are showing me are great. Already with a Man UTd midfielder, Lukaku, some good cheapies like Ritchie or Philips, nice Southampton defence. Just crazy. In pretty much most cases swapping Kane to Firmino is all they really want to do.

It is also worth noting that there have been much less rises and fallers so far this season.

On one hand that makes this international break worse for wildcarding for value...but it could also make the second international break poor as well.

          A situation to monitor.

Agreed. I am a value oriented manager, yet know that what goes up, often comes down, and you have alluded to the strategy required for one to realize gains. There is only one wc to use, and if it's value that drives one's use of a wc, then wc-ing now may not be the optimal time.

Personally, despite a woeful 1.8m rank (comes from captaining Kane 3x!), I fortunately drafted Firmino, saved my gw 1 trade, and then made 3 transfers for a minus 4 after gw 2 to get a Man Utd mid, defender, Eriksen, while dropping three fallers -- KDB, Danilo and Wij. So, I think I am relatively okay to hold.

Thanks for this, Jonty. As a newbie, I'm wondering if you can point me (and others similarly situated) to something that will help us understand the basics behind using your wildcard to build value. Like, I'm talking Wildcard Value 101. A lot of the analysis I've seen in these comments looks like graduate school level work.

Essentially, is it just "play your WC as soon as possible at the start of the international break, pick players you think will rise, then get those players out of your team at the very end of the break, setting up the team you actually want"?

Thanks in advance. This is my first year on the boards and I appreciate learning from a lot of folks who've been doing this for years.

Yep - if you are looking to make profit you need to activate it straight away and get in players that are rocketing in value quick - this rarely happens in first int break btw - more the second. Then you wait for them to rise a second time then you can ditch - and you get to use the profit.

Rises happen at the start of the break and at the end - it goes quiet in the middle.

But I often find there are few you do this with. If a player rises twice chances are that is because they are good and you will want to keep them.

For me wildcard should be about overhauling a poor team - that's it's best use.

Awesome - thanks for the info. One more potential strategy to consider!

Now back to fretting about whether I've screwed myself over by committing to stick with Kane and Lukaku...

People seem to think that all early wildcarders are impatient, knee jerking, money hungry so and so's desperate to hit the button. There are actually a few of us that are very down about feeling the need to do it, probably due to making major mistakes with the opening selection and ending up with several injured, rotated, under place pressure or in some cases non-starting players (the most major crime). Form after three weeks is not so important to me, but if a decision is made to WC you can at least do something with 3 weeks data and you will know all the moves of the transfer window. For example do we really see Liverpool attack clamming up? Or Man City settling on an XI? Or United starting to get battered? Or Arsenal getting cleanies?

If you are like me sat at 2.7M and have what you think are 6-7 problems than you wildcard to stop the game getting away from you too early. Sure I'd love to hang on but these chips are there for when you perceive they are needed - and that varies for everyone.

I would not draw the conclusion. Some folks need to wc to fix their teams -- due to injuries, rotation risks, price fallers, etc. At the same time, one would naturally sell those types of players for in-form price gainers, and/or nailed players with good fixtures. It's a both/and. I don't think the assumption is early wc-ers are being overly aggressive.

I think there's a little wildcard alarm that goes off in all of us - that says - the team's a mess, mistakes have been made - time to rip it up and start again.

Sounds like you have definitely reached that moment. Good luck with the overhaul.

Remember the fixture ticker to the side of the comments - that should be your guide to maximise the next few fixtures.

Also remember that this has to last until the new year and beyond and there will be fixture congestion in December. You will need 15 starters - or if you are savvy you have on your bench the definite back up for a certain starter - eg Hueniemier at Brighton - when Dunk or Duffy are rotated he will replace them so Dunk and him may be a great move.

Yep that is spot on Jonty - I need to avoid the 4.0s and get solid 4.5s in. I also tied up a lot of money in a big front 3 which left me inflexible. Only one manager to blame and he is typing 🙂

...and another thing that is said is 'why not just take a few hits to sort your team out and wait till the 2nd break' to which I say I can take my hits then it I want to. It won't matter that much which way round you do it - the 2nd break is not going to be an exclusive club to those that have played a WC.

it is best to use your WC when you need to, for what ever reason and each to their own ...
      - your team is rubbish,
      - full of injuries,
      - loads of price drops about to hit your team
      - loads of players you want may be rising
      - etc.
no need to over analyse it really but one thing for sure, price rises really slow down in the IB.

If you analyse teams in a few weeks time (say GW7) that have wild carded now ... most will be taking hits to put the WC choices right to catch the next Band Wagon rolling in to town, or Kane has just hit a hattie, or Morata has blanked 3 games on the trot and Klopp is rotating like a spinning top 🙂

If I had players falling in price I might be tempted to WC, but I have Mikhi, Eriksen, Lukaku etc and quite happy to ignore the 0.1 rises - can't flip them and bank the profit before the next game week, tried this last year, the price rise gamble didn't work and regretted it when I was taking a few hits two weeks later and not having the WC to sort out that nightmare blank game week a bit later etc.

Worth keeping Alonso through these tough fixtures? I really want to upgrade Richarlison to Salah but need to downgrade Alonso to likes of Naughton. Budget is tight so any price change screws this plan up. Would result in a -8 though therefore Im tempted to use WC to to avoid the hit, beat the price change and sort out likes of Stephens and Goldson etc...

How's everyone's opening weeks gone so far? For once I've had a good start owning Firmino, Pogab and Bailly, and adding Mkhi once Zaha got crocked as I'd kept a 1.0m contingency fund. No Lukaku, but these guys have covered him for me.

Three week's of Kane(c) fails is harsh though. I'm at 426k and could have been top 250k easily I'm sure with a goal or two.

    Opinion are most welcome

    Foster | [ Elliot ]
    Alonso | Trippier | Bailly | Cedric | [ Hunemeier ]
    Alli | Salah | Willian | Mooy | [JWP]
    Luka | Jesus [ Mitrovic ]

    ITB 0.5

Still considering to take a free hits chip to take out Hunemier, JWP and Mitro PLUS maybe wanna change Willian > Mkhy and ready for cash Luka to Kane for coming gameweeks

    Foster | [ Elliot ]
    Alonso | Naughton | Bailly | Cedric | [ Mbemba ]
    Alli | Salah | Mkhy| Mooy | [TCarroll]
    Kane | Jesus [ Ayew ]

    Thanks in advance
