The Knee Jerk – Gameweek 5

This Sergio Aguero chap looks a good option.

Twenty goals in 25 starts last season; he’s scored 24 and 26 goals in his two previous campaigns.

Priced at 11.4, cheaper than he’s ever been – he looks useful.

Of course, we all know this, it’s just that today’s devastating hat-trick at Watford has provided us with an almighty jolt and left us questioning our logic.

Seven days ago I wondered whether we will ever need look beyond the Harry Kane/Romelu Lukaku combination up front.

In true “knee-jerk” fashion, a week later, I’m now left asking if we can afford to overlook Aguero.

We can’t beat ourselves up; our reservations to this point were understandable.

Pep Guardiola’s plans with the Argentine, working in tandem with his apparent darling Gabriel Jesus, were shrouded in uncertainty.

Aguero has started up with Jesus in four of five Premier League matches. However, he was dropped to the bench at Bournemouth – a decision that appeared to confirm our fears that we could not rely on Aguero and Pep.

But today’s treble took Aguero to four goals since the south coast “rest” and the impact has been instant.

Over 74,000 have already moved to acquire Aguero, with Lukaku the major fall guy. The Manchester United striker has lost over 16,000 owners to his City rival before he’s even kicked a ball in Gameweek 5.

Some are clearly convinced, and the rest of us are left wondering if we should follow suit. City’s fixtures are more than enticing, and the prospect of watching Aguero run riot clutching FPL armbands is a petrifying thought.

Indeed, the only consolation today was that Aguero’s ownership remains relatively modest. He was part of just 502,000 squads ahead of Gameweek 5, and captained by 39% of those managers.

His 20-points will still make waves across mini-leagues and ranks, but it’s surely the least impactful hat-trick of Aguero’s illustrious FPL career.

But the haul hit even harder as a result of Kane’s bitterly disappointing blank.

Almost a million (20.1%) of FPL managers trusted Kane with the armband and were left frustrated by Spurs’ inability to breakdown a stubborn Swansea at Wembley.

Everything – the form, fixture and the statistics – all pointed to Kane being the Gameweek’s must-own, high-scoring option.

But there’s that logic again.

The same thought patterns that can perhaps persuade us that David Silva, Kevin De Bruyne or Gabriel Silva can cover Aguero’s future tallies.

Maybe, like a good few struggling Premier League managers, we just need to go back to basics.

Selecting Aguero in your Fantasy Football team used to be our rule number one. It was our basic instinct.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Thoughts on Firmino going forward? Have always thought he was good value but starting to wondering whether the likes of Lukaku, Kane, Aguero, Jesus, Morata and even Vardy are better options, especially as Salah looks like the standout Liverpool asset

There is no hope for you if you think Firmino is an average footballer and 'totally dependent on his position' doesn't even make sense. He's proven he's a top footballer and always in the goals in any attacking position for Hoffenheim, Liverpool and Brazil.

agree with berbs on this one, he will be good once in the centre and Sturridge will be no more than a substitute and was in there because Mané was banned.

Salah looks like good value, and even ifit doenst count pointswise it´s fun to have a player so constantly in dangerous positions, both goalscoring opportunitis and assistmakery (including penalties which he should have had given).
Having both could be good, but it depends a litlle on structure of your team, i would say
I have both atm and see no reason to ship either.

Lose Lukaku, United have 3 aways in 4 now and games coming up against Southampton, Liverpool, Spurs and Chelsea.

Can you see yourself captaining Lukaku in any of those and do you see Jose opening up in any of those?

Meanwhile City have home games against Palace, Stoke and Burnley with a trip to West Brom in the next 5, have to play the fixtures as we can't have them all this year.

Give Kane the next 3 and if he's still not convincing you then Kane to Lukaku is an easy swap.

Bad move. It could just as easily be Kane bagging the haul next time while Aguero gets rested ahead of games against Shaktar and Chelsea.

Between Kane, Aguero, Lukaku, Jesus and Morata we could easily end up chasing our tail up front if we're not careful. There's a reason Kane was deemed near essential going into today. Has one game really changed that?

Lukaku & Tadic --> Aguero & 7.5 mid (Brady/Ramsey?) worth a hit? Really want Aguero but also have been wanting to get rid of Tadic for a while. Defense needs some work too but think it can wait. Would leave my team looking like this:

its a valid point. The main reason I hesitate is that City have a big CL game around the corner and then Chelsea. At least I know Kane will get 90 against West Ham, and therefore is a viable captaincy option

could I ask why Ruth? You posted earlier about how Pep cultures his strikers in his second season (eg Lewandowski) so why don't you want Aguero now?

        1. Ruth_NZ
          • 9 Years
          6 years, 8 months ago

Sheesh. I have been thinking this through for the last few hours and it's hard to give a simple explanation.

If Aguero can't be captained he isn't worth 11.5m. That I am sure of anyway. So the question for me is whether I see him as one of the two best captain options available.

I don't expect Aguero to start every game. I therefore think he is a risky captain. So I am caught between two valid possibilities. One is that he starts the games where people captain him and does what Kun can do, in which case I will surely suffer. The other is that he gets rested when people least expect it and they get a 1-point cameo from their captain. And/or blanks when he has a great fixture, which even the best strikers do sometimes. As Kane did today.

There is also the question of whether City will continue to score 5 every week. They look like they will, in which case I will surely suffer. I don't think it can last, in which case others may fail to get value. Either of those is possible too.

When you are faced with a situation like that you have to take a position. I have decided to trust my fundamentals and swerve Kun. I truly don't know whether that will come out well or badly but that's the position I have taken. I will have no City players unless Jesus or Aguero get injured, at which point I will immediately buy the other one.

And that's the best explanation I can give. It's a calculated risk. Buying him would be a calculated risk as well. The balance for me comes down on the "no" side but it is not an easy decision and I am well aware that it could go against me.

As a final note, I find City very hard to assess right now. It appears that Pep has learned some lessons from last season. In which case his team selection may be more stable than I expect. In which case I'll probably be making a mistake in swerving Kun. That's something I'll have to keep my eyes on. But for now it's a no.

What is a risky captain these days?

The game is 5 weeks old, popular captains in these 5 weeks have been

            Lukaku 6 points
            Lukaku 6 points
            Kane 2 points
            Kane 2 points

I read you captained Chicharito for 2 points last week.

I think we can dress it up as much as we want to fit our own justifications around budgets BUT playing 90 mins or being assured of a start so far hasn't been a guarantee of quality returns.

            1. Ruth_NZ
              • 9 Years
              6 years, 8 months ago

What have I dressed up? I just explained my position as best I could in response to a question.

I'm not trying to justify anything, why would I need to? I'm just trying to make good decisions. Aren't you?

That's how it reads I'm afraid, you aren't keen on a player for fear of his minutes but ignore secure minutes have been particularly woeful with the captaincy.

because fpl also is about planning and strategy

if you say looked at the fixtures and thought that Kane had better fixtures than Lukaku and you did not want both as just one could be captained and perhaps had jesus already why on earth would you swap Kane out just because of one unlucky game?

I am one of those who´s not so concerned about Peps rotation thing because it seems like it´s not THAT big of a thing, some players seems pretty nailed to me and i had Jesus from the start knowing his pitchtime wasn´t going to 90 minutes every week but enough to make him score a lot which he have.

From the fplstatistics it does´nt seem to be any hesitation at all, Aguero is near a rise i think

I'd be worried when captaining Aguero to find him sitting on the bench due to a Pep brainstorm ... can't see that happening with Kane. Obviously one to monitor though ...Aguero very dangerous if nailed.

Guys tempted by Firmino and Mkhi to Atsu and Aguero for a -4

    Will give me:

    Fabianski (Elliott)
    Davies Jones Clark (Naughton Rosenoir)
    Salah Eriksen Brady *Atsu
    Kane Morata *Aguero

Plus .5m to turn Rosenoir into a playing 4.5m Def, thoughts? Or do you See a better move?

I'm tempted to do the same but Ritchie instead of Atsu, have exact funds to do tonight for a hit. Do it.

So I succumbed to the pressure and hit my WC. What do we reckon of this lot?

    Elliot
    Bavies, Ward, Jones
    Hazard, Mkhi, Gross, Ritchie
    Kane, Kun, Firmino

    (Foster, RLC, Lowe, Kiko)

    Thoughts?

    Elliot. Foster.
    Davies. Jones. Kola. Lascelles. Games.
    Eriksen. Mikhi. Ritchie. Choupo. Fellaini.
    Kane. Kun. Firmino.

(£0.6m in the bank for 5th def or 4th / 5th mid upgrade next week)

    Thanks!!

Argh Aguero rising will price me out of possibly doing Willian and Firmino -> 4.5 and Aguero if I don't do it tonight :/

      Get a 4.4?

That is also possible. Although I'd prefer two playing 4.5's as I have now T. Carroll. Willian and Stephens problematic players in my team in addition to no City players. Could also do Stephens & Lukaku -> Otamendi & Aguero for a hit but that would also have to be done tonight. Feeling very kneejerky but seriously considering these to options although it's against my normal playing style a little.

What are your thoughts on these possible moves TM?

Do you think King will continue in first choice 11? I'd not like to transfer in a non playing mid at this point

      On a WC:

      A) Eriksen + Alonso + 0 ITB
      B) Hazard + Otamendi + 0.7 ITB

I think A has a much higher ceiling. Thoughts?

I'm about to WC and I've come up with this snazzy team:

      Fabianski / Elliot
      Kola Davies Maguire Ward Wimmer
      *Salah* D.Silva Atsu Carroll Chalobah
      *Kane* Aguero Morata

But for safety reasons it's going to be like this until Sunday is over

      Fabianski / Elliot
      Kola Davies Maguire Ward Wimmer
      *Eriksen* D.Silva Atsu Carroll Chalobah
      *Lukaku* Aguero Morata

      Noice team?

      1. F4L

google, what are substitute goods. Basically just goods which can be used as ready made replacements for other existing goods.

      2. dark91
        • 8 Years
        6 years, 8 months ago

It is simply any good that people would opt for as a substitute for another one and they must be sharing some characteristics
So if the price for good A increases and as a result the demand for good B increases this means B is a substitute for A
