Suspensions

Five Gameweeks into the season, we felt it was time to add our regular Suspension Tightrope widget.

This is now available under the Watchlist rankings in your right sidebars or via the slide-in menu on mobile and tablet.

For those unfamiliar, the Tightrope keeps a tally of cards accrued from all domestic matches across the Carabao Cup, FA Cup and Premier League fixtures.

The table is updated after each Gameweek, and we aim to share the Fantasy implications of the latest yellows and reds collected in articles like the one you are reading now.

We’ll bring you news of all the latest suspensions, along with updates of the yellow card totals of the most regular perpetrators as they edge towards a domestic ban and clamber onto the ‘Suspension Tightrope’.

Crucially this season, it appears that the FA have changed the curfew rules for accumulating five and ten yellow cards.

Previously, players had to avoid collecting five domestic bookings before New Year’s Day, when the “tightrope” was extended to 10 cautions. They then had to get to the second Sunday of April and avoid receiving a two-match ban for 10 cards.

However, presumably to make this fairer for teams who played more matches before those curfew dates, the FA now specify the following in this season’s handbook.

A Player accumulating five cautions will be automatically suspended for one first-team competitive match if he has accumulated those five cautions in (up to and including) the number of matches in the relevant League as set out in the table below:

League League Matches
Premier League 19
EFL 19
National League 23

A Player accumulating ten cautions will be automatically suspended for two FTCM if he has accumulated those ten cautions in (up to and including) the number of matches in the relevant League as set out in the table below:

League League Matches
Premier League 32
EFL 37
National League 37

This effectively means that, regardless of when their fixtures fall, players have to avoid five bookings over their team’s first 19 Premier League matches and ten bookings over the first 32 matches.

In Fantasy terms, this means that Gameweek 19 – on December 23 – is currently the curfew for five yellow cards. Gameweek 32 on March 31 would be the second curfew, although, for some teams, that will be disrupted by postponements around that period.

The FA Cup Quarter Finals fall in Gameweek 31 currently, while the final of the Carabao Cup will take place in Gameweek 28. Those teams involved in either of those will face a postponed fixture and, therefore, their players will have a curfew for 10 cards extended.

I have contacted the FA for clarification of this.

As it stands, already two players are just one yellow away from a single-match suspension and look destined to serve a ban unless they can somehow navigate another 13 Gameweeks without a caution.

Crystal Palace’s Jason Puncheon and West Ham United’s Pablo Zabaleta are those two players. Both have received four Premier League bookings and were understandably omitted from last night’s Carabao Cup ties with that in mind.

That pair walk the tightrope against Manchester City and Spurs in Gameweek 6.

Below them we have eight players on three bookings and these include another Palace player – Christian Benteke. A suspension for him would be a major blow given their lack of options up front.

Newcastle United’s Matt Ritchie is perhaps the key asset in that list. He’s produced four assists so far this season and has earned over 93,000 new owners ahead of Gameweek 6. Pick up a yellow card at Brighton on Sunday and he will be just a single caution from an untimely one-match ban.

Of course, throughout this article we will also update you on existing bans and their progress.

Chelsea’s David Luiz is our article’s poster boy, having been the latest to be served with a suspension. A three-match ban has him sit out tonight’s Carabao Cup clash with Nottingham Forest along with Gameweek 6-7 encounters with Stoke City and Manchester City.

Elsewhere, Liverpool’s Sadio Mane, along with Newcastle’s Aleksandar Mitrovic and Miguel Britos of Watford can all make returns after Gameweek 6, having served out their own three-match suspensions.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

      Weak midfield.

You have to drop one of the heavy hitter strikers and upgrade midfield

I'd personally let go of one of the premium fed to upgrade mid.
If you want keep all three of them then I'd look to downgrade Martin and find some way to upgrade Ramsey. Your second mid needs to be stronger than ramsey

Kanes stats may be good but all I'm saying is that teams digress sometimes, players have off seasons, teams get stale, it happens all the time. I'm keeping him for now, but it's not a guarantee he will replicate last season

Kane doubters are so funny. Same thing every season. He will end up with bucketloads of goals. As soon as he gets his brace or hat trick the same people doubting him will be scrambling to get him in.

Funnily enough, I said the same thing about Kun a couple weeks ago.

Are you worried about their transition to Wembley, or the fact that they haven't bought any new attacking players? Just curious

      1. Bubz
        • 12 Years

No and no. Kane will still be in and around top goalscorer this season

    2. Going Home
      • 14 Years
      8 years, 10 months ago

The difference being that Kane is 100% nailed to play at least 80 minutes every single league game. Kun isn't/wasn't/will never be.

      Turning to the important questions:

Do I think Kane will score 20+ this season? Yes
Would I sell him if I had him? Probably not.
Do I feel a little smug that I didn't start the season with him? Yes
Am I completely ready to jump on the bandwagon when it starts? Yes

But by only having him for a single week out of 5, I have been able to spend my £1m elsewhere, which has probably got me more than the number of points I will miss by missing out on the first week or two of him getting going

      1. Bubz
        • 12 Years

I think people who have gone without Kane have been quite lucky. He could easily have had some hauls this season already, he's been very unlucky. (I have only owned him 2 GWs this season myself)

Oh for sure, I was following last weekend a nervous man. But, as a poster below put, several options and only three spaces.

The main difference I am seeing from last season is that Kane isn't bullying weaker teams like he did (seven goals in the last couple of games v Hull and Lei***ter). If things wernen't going his way, he would come deep, pick it up 35 yards out and have a crack. Eventually it would pay off

The key is the number of big chances - he's had less than half the number that Lukaku has had. He's shooting from everywhere but not having good quality chances.

Good point. You only get Kun or Kane to captain them, and Kane will not be benched whereas Kun will. The occasional 20+ points score will quickly be eroded by the 1 point (x2) off the bench every five or six gameweeks.

I've skippered Lukaku every week bar one (Damn Kane v Burnley! His one and only chance with me. Although Lukaku failed harder that week).

I'm not a big one for the points ceiling theory. Give me a 6-9 point skipper (goal and 0-3 bonus) and I am happy. Like you say, the od 2 point skipper can really hurt. That said, (K)un lines up for me this weekend...

Several options & 3 spots. That's the game.

      1. This - it's about being on the right ones at the right time. Hazard and Sanchez catching fire will make this season even more interesting.

Everyone seems to forget with Kane that it's possible to use transfers to switch him in and out. I don't think anyone doubts that he will eventually come good but I don't see any point keeping him in such a barren spell with 4 blanks in 5 in the league. He's staying out of my team until him and Spurs show me they can beat teams at home in the league.

This is kind of the point I was making. You take a chance before GW1, but then you have some info to work with. At the moment, the info on HK suggests "wait and see" rather than "jump on board"

Yeah - if I still had Kane and no pressing issues (injuries/suspensions), Kane to Jesus/Kun would be a great FT, playing the stats. Yes, you might get burned. But so might someone taking out Ritchie for Ramsay, that's the game

I'd rather be an owner for his hat trick than a person scrambling to get him in with a -4 the week afterwards

      Hey Bubz,

I have had Kane twice this season and both times he let me down (so far). Luckily I missed the first three blanks.

I still have him and I won't take a -4 to get Aguero in, even though I can afford to. The nagging doubt for me is yes, he is almost certain to get 20+ goals this season, but so are at least two other players, and they are, of course, cheaper. Is Kane really worth the extra? Time will tell. I'm holding for now but I have a wildcard in hand.

just used wild card, this is what i've gone for atm. rank 111,090.

    pope/fabianski, elliot.
    Mendy, kolasinac, davies, jones, mbemba.
    mhki, ritchie, Groß, loftus-cheek, carrol.
    kane, aguero, lukaku.

    0.5 ITB.

planning to go 5-2-3, or 4-3-3 as the wing back system big teams are implementing makes defenders far better value than expensive fpl midfielders.

    Suggestions would be appreciated, cheers.

What's happened to at least trying to find balance this is year?

Seems loads are trying to shoehorn one big hitter in too many at the expense of two or three positions.

Probably best to go that way when you have a wildcard in your pocket to redistribute the money if it goes wrong rather than wildcard it in.

That team has future hits needed written all over it.

Also, get salah sooner rather than later.. he will easily be one of the top 3 goalscorers at the end of the season if he doesn't get injured imo

Hate to put a spanner in the works but no spurs attacking coverage would terrify me

Ummm not so sure, I want max assets from Manchester atm! Will wait to see how Aguero/Jesus works out, if doesn't go well will get Spurs attacking coverage in

Will decide after seeing the line ups tonight. It’s a tough decision. Kane could come good against West Ham.

    Bit of help please guys.

    A) Firminho, Willian >> Jesus, Doucoure

since 4-3-3 is the way to go now. I also watched Newcastle play and feel that they play very well recently. Also, to avoid any benching headaches. Do you feel this is an OK WC?

Don't like 2 Newcastle mids because if Newcastle don't score you're in major trouble already.

I want to transfer out Chica asap, but I'm not sure what's the best way to do so. Or is it more important to get in a MCI player? Any other ideas?
