Scout Notes – Carabao Cup – Wednesday

Sergio Aguero is handed the night off as Leroy Sane scores twice in Man City’s win at the Hawthorns, while a star turn from Chelsea’s Eden Hazard has us purring.

Marcus Rashford continues his fine from with a double for Man United and Everton finally get some joy, but Arsenal struggle to a win and West Brom bow out on a night of mixed fortunes in the Carabao Cup.

Here are the notes from Wednesday’s ties.

Guardiola rotates most, but not Jesus

Pep Guardiola is in danger of becoming someone that Fantasy managers can actually trust.

The Man City boss rested all but three of the players who started the 6-0 rout at Watford, with two of the Gameweek’s three most popular purchases, Sergio Aguero and David Silva, given the night off.

Acquired by over 506,000 FPL managers since last weekend, Aguero’s growing band of owners will now be very confident of his place on City’s teamsheet against Crystal Palace on Saturday.

But the 12.4% who own Gabriel Jesus would have been disappointed to see that their man wasn’t afforded the same luxury.

The striker has not played a full 90 minutes in the league all season, but that’s precisely what he did in last night’s 2-1 win at West Brom.

He’s been drafted in by 109,000+ ahead of the plum home fixture with Roy Hodgson’s side but there will now be some uncertainty over his minutes on Saturday.

Leroy Sane has had to live off scraps of pitch-time this season, scoring twice in a memorable 33-minute appearance against Liverpool in Gameweek 4. He doubled his tally for the season at The Hawthorns, with goals at either end of a match in which Ilkay Gundogan made his first start of the campaign after eight months out with injury.

The midfielder looked in fine form until a particularly industrial challenge from Claudio Yacob ended his evening.

Guardiola played down the extent of the problem post-match.

“It’s not eight months, but a little injury. Unfortunately, the action is tough. He will be back soon hopefully. Tomorrow we will make a test. The physio and doctor told me it’s not a big issue.”

Assists came from Gundogan and Bernardo Silva, while Yaya Toure also made his first start of the season.

City will now face a visit from Wolves in the next round, the tie coming between a home match with Burnley and another trip to West Brom.

First start, same old result

Michy Batshuayi scored a hat-trick as Chelsea brushed aside Nottingham Forest 5-1, but it was Eden Hazard who was the headline act.

Coach Antonio Conte handed Hazard his first start of the season and the Belgian didn’t disappoint, setting up two goals and unlucky not to score himself when a shot hit the post.

With the matches coming thick and fast either side of the October international break, Conte retained only Gary Cahill and Cesc Fabregas from the team held 0-0 by Arsenal on Sunday.

That meant a rare outing for Kenedy, who scored and provided the assist for Batshuayi’s hat-trick, while the next generation of Blues’ players either started or came off the bench, with Charly Musonda capping a memorable first start with the third goal.

Fabregas and Antonio Rudiger were also among the assists, while goalkeeper Willy Caballero made his competitive debut.

Hazard played the full 90 minutes, upping his match fitness ahead of crucial road trips to Stoke City and Atletico Madrid over the next week.

Fabregas was withdrawn after 56 minutes, however, suggesting that Conte could be calling on the Spaniard from the get-go at the weekend.

Hazard’s ownership is edging higher, but he still sits in just 2.9% of Fantasy Premier League squads.

The Blues’ domestic schedule is generally attractive, with a Gameweek 7 visit from Man City the only major test until the beginning of November.

The temptation to bring in an increasingly impressive Hazard grows stronger by the match.

Chelsea will host Everton in the fourth round, which takes place either side of a home match with Watford and a trip to Bournemouth.

McAuley back for beaten Baggies

FPL’s most owned defender, West Brom’s Ahmed Hegazi (28.1%), stayed on the bench for the defeat to Man City.

In the short-term, that would imply his starting place in the league remains secure.

But the return of Gareth McAuley from injury – he played just over an hour last night – could have an impact on the Egyptian’s spot further down the line.

Interestingly, McAuley played in a back three, with new signing Kieran Gibbs starting at left wing-back and providing the assist for Claudio Yacob’s goal.

Jonny Evans and Craig Dawson partnered McAuley at the back as coach Tony Pulis made just the five changes on the night, with a slight calf strain keeping Chris Brunt sidelined.

West Brom play three of their next four league matches away from home, and their schedule stiffens even more after that.

That combination of tough fixtures and increased competition for places has led to just over 40,000 managers ditching Hegazi this week – an exodus that could well gather momentum from now on.

Rashford at the double

Marcus Rashford was the star of the show as Man United made short work of Burton 4-1.

The striker was handed the central role he clearly craves and took full advantage, scoring twice and setting up Anthony Martial’s strike for good measure.

Rashford has, understandably, had to play second fiddle to Romelu Lukaku this season, deployed in a support role on the left flank.

But he has featured for at least 60 minutes in all but one league match so far, producing two goals and an assist along the way.

Yet in spite of Rashford’s star turn, Lukaku owners will – like Aguero’s – be delighted to see that he was not involved last night, instead warming the Red Devils’ bench ahead of the weekend trip to St Mary’s.

The other goal on the night came from Jesse Lingard, with Daley Blind and Martial providing assists.

United will travel to Swansea City in round four, the tie bookended by a trip to Huddersfield and that Spurs encounter.

Relief at last for Everton

Ronald Koeman’s struggling Everton side enjoyed a morale-boosting 3-0 win over Sunderland just when they needed it most.

Dominic Calvert-Lewin scored twice and forgotten man Oumar Niasse grabbed the other as the Toffees finally found the net again after three consecutive blanks in the league and a wretched 3-0 loss at Atalanta in the Europa League.

The performance of Calvert-Lewin was particularly welcome. The young striker costs just 5.0 and is owned by a mere 1.8%, despite setting up both of Everton’s league goals this season.

Part of that lowly ownership is down to the fact that hasn’t started domestically since Gameweek 2, the rest a combination of the side’s brutal opening schedule and the resultant loss of confidence and attacking bite.

But with happier times ahead – only a Gameweek 9 visit from Arsenal disrupts an otherwise fine run of fixtures all the way into December – a good win and solid performance couldn’t have come at a better time.

Assists came from Sandro, Davy Klaassen and Tom Davies.

Niasse, who spent last season on loan at Hull City, is yet to be listed in this season’s FPL game.

Everton will now face Chelsea at Stamford Bridge in the next round, a tie sandwiched between that Arsenal match-up and a trip to Leicester City.

Gunners sneak through

Alexis Sanchez started and played the full 90 minutes as Arsenal stumbled to a 1-0 win over Doncaster.

The Chilean set up Theo Walcott’s winner as a much-changed Gunners fired in 27 shots on the night but were the width of a crossbar away from being taken to extra time by their League One opponents.

Olivier Giroud and Jack Wilshere were among the other starters, while Calum Chambers lasted only 45 minutes before succumbing to what looked like a serious hip injury that has since ruled him out until after the international break.

Sanchez (11.9) remains a high-cost, high-risk investment that few – 2.4% – are currently willing to make.

But Wenger’s post-match comments suggested that more consistent league involvement may now be on the cards.

“For me he needs competition and that’s why I left him on the pitch as well. Yes, he should be ready now (for Monday v West Brom).”

Finding the requisite amount of money to acquire last season’s top scorer in FPL looks beyond nearly all of us at the moment, however.

It will take a return to last year’s explosive ways for Sanchez to become anything but a bit-part player for now. That looks some way off based on Wednesday’s below-par performance.

Arsenal will entertain Norwich City in round four, with Everton away and a home match with Swansea City either side of the cup tie.

I'm thinking hell start on the bench too, due his rest and with a game against palace at home, may not be a better opportunity especially with CL coming up and Aguero rested yesterday.

All fingers point to a rest after 90mns last night for me.

Why wouldn't he of rested him after 70 mins if he was in his plans, Pep always seems takes players of early when thinking of his next game.

Fantasy Football Scout daily hot topic

    Don’t Forget Chelsea

This hot topic is thinking a little ahead but is an issue I think we need to keep in mind. With Aguero dominating the discussion – and rightly so - this week we could be in danger of missing out on some other emerging issues in Fantasy Football.

Whether wildcarding or not in the next international break there are a number of fixture swings to consider with Chelsea’s start of a very strong run being among them.

From Gameweek 8 to Gameweek 21 they have arguably only two tough on paper games

    GWK 11 - MUN
    GWK 13 – liv

The rest is a sea of blue on the season ticker, which makes both their defence and attack strong options.

    In Defence

A defender looks key and the choice will be whether to invest heavily in Alonso’s goal threat or spend a little less and get Cahill or Azpilicueta. All are strong options and a lot will depend on budget. Cahill was one I mentioned on the Scoutcast specifically due to his 6.3 price tag – which looks cheap taking into account his six goals last term and clean sheet potential.

    In Attack

And this is what prompted me to post this – Hazard is coming back slowly into form and building up his match fitness. His two assists and strong display in the Cup last night showcased how he is improving. When he becomes a nailed on starter – possibly as early as this weekend – he should do well. He has the pedigree after all – with three 200+ FPL points scoring seasons in the last five.

Morata is the other strong alternative. And Chelsea’s strong run also coincides with a dip in fixtures for other premium strikers.

Kane and Lukaku owners should consider GWK 8-11's fixtures.

Morata – cry, WAT, bou, MUN
Kane – BOU, LIV, mun, CRY
Lukaku – liv, hud, TOT, che

Taking into account Kane’s form at Wembley and those awful Manchester United fixtures Morata is certainly a strong alternative to consider.

So perhaps as well as marvelling at Aguero’s goals this weekend we should also take some time to see how Chelsea get on away to Stoke ahead of the London side’s strong and very lengthy upcoming fixture run.

Certainly considering one of Luiz or Cahill for my GW8 wildcard. Will try and stretch to Alonso if I have the funds.

Morata is a tricky one if Kane, Lukaku & Aguero all do well over the next 3 will have place for him on our squads? Also have to see if Morata gets rotated around tougher CL matches this week.

Holding onto Alonso for now. Can decide between Hazard and Morata once they play 2-3 games together. As a bonus the dibs on penalty might also become clear in next 2-3 games in PL/CL.

Hazard seems slightly overpriced to me given that I probably won't captain him. I'll almost certainly get Alonso on wildcard. Might also go for Fabregas. Had him in the run-in last season and Conte was wonderfully consistent playing him at home and in the easier games. I could play him with confidence knowing he'd rack up assists and bench him for trickier games knowing Conte would do the same.

Indeed. Just Alonso atm, but this could be among the problems of investment in 3 expensive fwds.

Hoping for Luiz to drop to 5.8 and mop him up.

The others are too big an investment for me and will stick with Morata as my offensive option.

Hazard is always gold but I'm biding my time on Alli and Kane first before moving.

They have some great options, but they do come with the FPL premium of playing for the reigning champions.

Alonso, Hazard and Morata will all be near the top for overall points in their respective positions by the end of the season, but that's what you'd expect at their prices.

In a season where all the big hitting forwards seem to be firing, funds are tight, and value is particularly important. I think Alonso and Hazard are great, but are they worth the one million plus over Kolasinac and Davies, or Eriksen and Salah?

I see them as players who will perform at the level you'd expect for the money, but not as players who are likely to outperform their prices. I'm also yet to be fully convinced by Chelsea this season, though they've had a tough start to their fixtures.

The main prospect I'm interested in at Chelsea is Cesc Fabregas - he's started every match he's been available for this season, in all competitions. I'm happy to wait for the fixtures to turn, to see if he'll be rotated again, but 6.9 for a nailed on assist machine would be incredible. I also like Cahill at 6.3, but he's not a player I'd be in a hurry to bring in.

I fear he will never be nailed on.

Kanté is. Which means there is only room for one of Bakayoko or Fabregas next to him - and in some games Conte will favour the power of Baka.

Fabregas also played further up the pitch this season but because Hazard not starting left a vacant spot. Imho.

comparing Jesus with Morata their stats are pretty much similar. Of course Morata is better creator but his heatmap in the box isn't so hot.
Jesus being subbed off around 60th minute is really annoying and maybe it isn't bad idea to swap him with Morata? I just want to see how Hazard on pitch will impact on Morata. Having Jesus in your team and watching City you really don't want to see Sterling/Bernardo/Sane around 60:00 in close-up staying by the line.
Thinking about Jesus being rested against Palace maybe it's the right time to swap him to Morata?
What's your opinion Jesus owners? Keeping him and hoping he will go mad in 60 minutes or take Morata as main target for Chelsea up front?

I've taken a punt on Lacazette in for Lukaku, mainly due to my awful start and to finance Aguero from Firmino. If he does nothing in the two home games then it will likely be a Morata swap. I still want to see how Hazard and him works out...

Been looking at this myself this morning. I think theres a huge case to ditch Lukaku for Morata for GW's 8-11, then when Man Utd's fixtures improve again GW12 onwards bring back a hopefully fit again Pogba who by then may well be down at below 8m.

Alternatively, if you are desperate to captain Lukaku gw's 12-14, bring him in for Morata. This could be combined with buying someone like Fabregas or Pedro if Chelsea cover is desired.

Nice to still have a wildcard!

Think a defender is excellent Chelsea coverage though and may even be enough.

Morata if a big hitting forward is off the boil plenty of time to see how Hazard / Morata work together

I was looking at this earlier.
Of the 7 fixtures GW8-15, ARS & MUN have three very tough fix!
        Arsenal: mci TOT MUN
        United: liv TOT che

So next week my plan is to save FT, then during the break do Lukaku + Kola to Morata + Azpi/Cahill.
Could work out great but I'll prob have bigger fires to put out by then 😉

Alonso deffo (this week's 0-0 bore and 6 points showed why he is above the Willians/Pedros), and Hazard and/or Morata on a GW8 WC for me. No brainer with those fixtures. Early WCers will be scrambling to get them in for hits.

Agreed. On WC now and have Alonso as a holding position - a landing party you could say onto the Chelsea beach. Will then move to get Morata or Hazard post international break using a couple of FTs. Somethings got to give big hitter wise and for me its Liverpool players and Kane. City will continue to feature in my team as will Lukaku,

The problem i have is that I really don't want to get rid of Alonso and my other forwards and big hitter mids are also too important.

          Ali, Salah, Lukaku, Kane.

Doing the above gives me a really good first team for the next few weeks. If I get injuries I can just WC.

Who am I scared of this GW?
Kun so I got him in.
        Kolasinac. I did Kun instead.
Ritchie. I did Atsu for the money.
Mendy. I M City cover on aan attacking WB.
Kaku. But I have Kane and Kun

Who I don't think has worth:
Alonso. I would rather have Kolasinac
Cedric. At 5 there seems to be no alternative with my funds.
Firmino. who I was convinced about only last week.
Foster. Wasting .5 that I could do with to get a WB.

What will I think next week? I have been "chasing the ace" which I tell my less experienced buddies not to do.

Possession % in Harry Kane's matches so far this season:

        Newcastle 27-73 Tottenham (Kane blank)
        Tottenham 68-32 Chelsea (Kane blank)
        Tottenham 67-33 Burnley (Kane blank)
Everton 51-49 Tottenham (Kane 2 goals)
Tottenham 32-68 Dortmund (Kane 2 goals, 1 assist)
Tottenham 75-25 - Swansea (Kane blank)

Worth noting that Kane has done well in the only two games that Spurs have had less of the ball than the opposition - possibly due to him being able to find more space against teams that don't sit back as much.

Interesting, would like to see this overlaid with big chances and other stats to see what correlation they have with possesion too. Reason being is at least in the Newcastle game he was unlucky not to score, same against Burnley too arguably.

I thought about doing this, but don't have access to Big Chances stats for CL matches.

I wouldn't read too much into it, though - Spurs had the majority of possession in each of the 8 league matches Kane scored twice or more in last season. It just tells the story of the types of game Kane has done well in so far this season.

That's a great point, for all their lack of possession, if you turn the hit posts into goals it makes the lack of possession not really an issue.

Tottenham are shooting their own leg, for God's sake, Pochettino stick to one formation. No team won the league adapting, teams win by dominating and forcing their style. Koeman is doing the same thing with Everton, the only difference is that Spurs has better players.

Possession is a symptom not the cause. What has really hurt Spurs this season is the loss of pace in the wing back position. All Spurs main attackers like to operate centrally and for several seasons they have relied on the pace of Walker and Rose to stretch teams and give their main attackers space to work in. Davies and Trippier are good players but they do not have pace and therefore tend to keep possession by passing back into midfield (thus the high possession stats).

Spurs actually only need one pacy wing back to stretch teams that park the bus. It is about the stretching rather than the delivery. Neither Walker nor Rose are as accurate crossers of the ball as Trippier and Davies but they have the pace to get behind defenders and pull them out of position . I expect the pacy Aurier to take over from Trippier as first choice and a corresponding increase in Spurs attacking returns.

          Possession is grossly overrated.

It isn't how much possession you have, it's what you do with it when you have it.

Some managers insist on claiming that they dominated a game and were unlucky to lose just because their team had the lion's share of possession.

But if they failed to set up as many big chances as their opponents then their opponents deserved to win.

That first half vs Swansea was so so bad. They had possession but were just moving the ball sideways so slooooowly. Just hoping that Poch gets them to play with urgency. Well, that or hopefully at least the derby forces them to do it.

This is a worry if other managers catch onto the trend. Its no secret that Spurs are one of the top three, even top two, sides in the league. If everyone pulls a Pulis when they play Spurs then Kane owners have a problem.

I thought it was back 4 vs easy teams and back 3 vs top teams

Jesus could easily take that position from Sane, no?

Jesus played 90 mons last night, Sane looks like his earn't a prem start and was the only player apart from an injury to Gund that came off early?

Aren't you worried about Walker's pitch time as he's covering both left and right flanks?? 😉

          Played my WC
With Pogba injured, Is Fellaini likely to start?
Southampton away seems like perfect game where Mourinho would play him
£4.9 cheap option for me too.

Likely to start, but not overly attacking (unless they need a goal late on). Other option is Herrera and Matic in double pivot with 3 behind Luk (Mata / Mikhi / Rashford).
