Technical Area – Budget Midfield Options

One key to a successful Fantasy season has always been the early discovery of a midfield gem.

The 2015/16 season saw Riyad Mahrez rise from relative obscurity to the heights of a 240-point season, while last campaign, Josh King’s 16 goals powered many Fantasy line-ups to the top of their respective mini-leagues.

After seven Gameweeks, we are beginning to accumulate sufficient data to begin making more confident assertions regarding a player’s underlying performance metrics.

This international break is, therefore, an ideal time to evaluate the potential candidates for the title of must-have budget midfielder this time around.

It also gives us the chance to roll out – for the first time in Technical Area – data on expected goals (xG) and assists (xA), a new source of information which will soon be available to our members.

      Assuming you're playing 3 at the back, you might as well downgrade someone to a 4.0 benched defender(Mbemba, as at least he's around the first team) and upgrade elsewhere.

        Fab to Pope could happen but double Burnley when playing ward every week might be over kill. Kola is a personal preference (as an arsenal fan.

          Pope is achieving 5.3 ppg and I would certainly have him ahead of Fabs. BUR have conceded 82 goal attempts in the last 4 so think of all those save points on offer.

          Double BUR wouldn't bother me - you probably won't play them both each week anyway. They have kept 3 cs already though so I don't think you have much to worry about there.

          Kola - keep your emotions out of it. Boot.

            Haha. It's not all about emotions though. Even though Alexis makes him a bit less appealing, he still gets forward a lot and goes up for set pieces. Over the season he should comfortably outscore someone like Monreal. Also, Pope does rotate better with Elliot so he might be better. Ta, Jafa.

      I'd personally have another look at the defence, the 5.0m bracket is poor in my opinion, either go 4.5m rotating, or 5.5m with 4.0m benched.

        Yeah it's not the best.
        I need 4 playing defenders every week so want to have some cover in my 5th def slot.
        Cedric is just there for the fixtures, and Daniels looks good from GW11 onwards.

          Cedric is good value I agree, and Azplicueta too.
          But the other three, four when you include your keeper aren't great options.
          Bournemouth look very fragile defensively.
          As do Burnley, I know they have three clean sheets but from actually watching the games they don't look convincing.
          ...and Swansea, they'll be a bottom 5 team this season, so I don't expect great defensive returns.

          This is all just my opinion, could be wrong of course.

      Mbemba, I would avoid but if you only need to play 3 at the back it's fine to have a non playing 4.0 in there.

        Any reason you dont line Chelsea defender who has great form?
        Fabs stays as dont want double Bur and he is save points machine.
        Mbemba>Cedric is useless as I will play 3-4-3
        I know Eriks is nice pick but cant have them all so decided to get City mid.

          CHS defenders: no value. There are so many defensive options in the 4.5-5.5 range that it makes no sense to buy them in esp when money is tight.

          My WC D looks like: Ward, Bavies, Otamendi, Fonte, Cedric.

          They give me five good options each week if the trend of cs continues.

          Pope rots well with Elliot and is gaining 5.3 ppg so its a no brainer.

          Mbemba: I want 5 active defenders each week. Mbemba does not give me that option. It is worth upgrading to a Mee or BHA/NEW def.

          Eriksen is essential so I don't get your thinking there.

    Downgrading Sane could give me Choupo-Moting and Richarlison, a better goalkeeper and maybe Simpson instead of Wimmer. But it's time for Sane to make his mark. Amazing talent.
