The ScoutCast – Episode 236 – Pepped

Restored to a five-strong squad, this week’s ScoutCast is still resonating from the shock of Man City’s seven-slice goal pie, served up by Pep at the expense of Stoke City.

That avalanche of goals and points fell into the laps of two of the ScoutCast crew, as Jonty and Andy bask in their post-Pep Wildcard success.

Others weren’t so fortunate, as we tell the tale of an unfortunate 11-point refresh and Az’s 32-point Gameweek misery that has since sparked his own Wildcard activity.

City dominate the community questions driving this 90-minute episode, while we also revisit the Harry Kane debate, fuelled by his latest Wembley misfire.

This ScoutCast was first beamed live via our YouTube channel on Tuesday night. Be sure to subscribe to get notice of future live episodes.

Some have played their free hit chip with success so far; it seems like there's been several weeks where it looks like a strong option. For example, this week is a wonderful single week to have 3 United players, but you wouldn't want them next week.

How do people feel about the free hit chip? Have the several success stories been celebrated too early? It seems like a chip you can use for DGW or blank gameweeks, or perhaps when you've just got that hunch.

Think about a team consisting of...

    MU: Lukaku, Martial, Jones
    MC: Sterling, Silva, Jesus
    Chelsea: Alonso, Pedro/Haz, Morata

Then pinching in the likes of Zaha, Chopu, etc that may well be awesome picks this week.

    Thoughts?

i got 86 on mine in gw6 so up 26 on average. however i played it mainly due to bringing in pogba pre injury (so i saved a -4) and having a dreadful start. those doing ok id suggest are best keeping for the blanks or an emergency.

If you use the free hit does it save any hits you've already taken that week?
I have somewhat accidently taken a -20 and don't have a wildcard. I'm blaming having a new born and being sleep deprived and now I don't know what to do!
I'm tempted to use the free hit if it saves the -20 and go back to my pre transfer team next week. Or I'll just stick it out man up about the awful gameweek this week and hopefully rebuild with a much better squad from next week!

Save it for now. It can look tempting ofc. And I am not fundamentally against not saving for a late blank week but if you are to use it in a single game week, I would be tempted to use it when the champions league is in winter sleep mode.

To add to this, the free hit chip could help with...

      - many have Davies, and this would give you another week to access his spot and his potential replacements.
      - If Pep indicates Aguero will start, I'd have to think he's the #1 captain option this week, maybe Lukaku.
      - preparing for a DGW without a free hit chip has been quite simple in the past, so has planning for a blank gameweek which is generally low scoring, and it's easy to field a score you're satisfied with for the week.

      This could work.

In a blank gameweek, there may only be 4 or 5 active teams who all are low scoring, not very attacking teams. Like Brighton, Burnley etc.

In that instance, no way would you score more than triple Man United, City and Chelsea this week.

I think this chip could be very useful in GW38 as all the big hitters are chasing the golden boot. No need to worry about team structure and you can easily go big three up front. There are plenty of fringe players playing GW38, so some of those punts can make up the midfield too.

I also think more than points gained, this chip allows for you to not stock your team up with filth from the blank GW. So many of us carried the likes of Phillips, WBA defender, Bournemouth/Liverpool defenders etc. because of the extra fixture in the blank GW. As soon as the GW was done, those players were absolutely useless lying around and cost you points in the longer run.

Drafting up some teams right now. Would love suggestions. Considering a 3-5-2 with Lukaku and Jesus/Kun up top.

As I said, has looked a good option several gameweeks. If you get 100 points with it it's very far from silly. The average for the blank gameweek last year was like 30 points, something like 4-5 total goals scored by a bunch of no ones if I remember correctly?

Average was low because so many people took lots of hits and/or didn't field 11. Those who planned made up loads of points that GW. This year, you don't have to plan - just use the Free Hit chip, and not only do you get the extra points, but you also don't compromise your team before and after the blank GW.

Yes, all great points. You wonder how many players are really going to save it for the blank, the fewer that save it, the more powerful it becomes.

Are we talking about the weekend of March 11/12 where there were only 4 games ?
If so there were talking about 14 goals not 4 or 5
          BOU 3 WH 2
          EVE 3 WBA 0
          HUL 2 SWA 1
          LIV 2 BUR 1

As for a bunch of no ones, you could have fielded these few players, who even I've heard of 😉

          Robles Clean Sheet 6 pts

          Coleman Clean Sheet 6pts
          Mawson Goal 7 pts

          Antonio Goal 7 pts
          Sigurdson Assist 5 pts

Lukaku Goal and Assist 9 + Bonus
          King 3 Goals 17 points

Those 7 players would have got you close to 60 points

How do you know it's crazy? We have no data yet.
A normal GW - granted, one carefully picked (perhaps when CL rotation is not an issue), could yield a lovely windfall. A windfall prettier than one whilst playing the chip in a blank GW when you could be relying on attackers from Brighton, Huddersfield whoever. Crazy to call the idea crazy at this point imo.

Imagine the regret if it fails, too risky imo, far more valuable in the blank gameweek. Even if it does pay off you still have to manage the blank gameweek which could cost points as you'll be funnelling your moves towards that

Imagine getting 27 points instead of 16 in a blank gameweek. There's a risk to playing the chip and there's a risk to not playing it.

I'm more trying to open up a discussion about how to use it most effectively.

There are 3 ways of negotiating a BGW.

1/ The traditional preparation which may pay off but will probably cost you pts in the GWs both before and after.

2/ Ignoring it and accepting that you will have a red arrow but saving on hits and transfers in the surrounding GWs.

          3/ Using the FH chip.

All have their risks. I usually use method 1/ but I think I might try 2/ this season. 3/ will be the most popular this year but the BGWs may turn out to be a damp squib. If they have the big teams playing then there's not much point in using your chip as you will most likely already have a decent line-up, whereas if they don't you may struggle to spend your budget with most heavy hitters missing and it is unlikely it will be a high scoring GW anyway.

          1. Now I'm Panicking
            • 9 Years
            6 years, 7 months ago

Good points, but what I would say is if you use your FH chip early in the season, you are then limited to choosing between options 1 and 2 (or somewhere in the middle more likely), whereas if you save your FH chip you have all the options open. If the BGW then doesn't take your fancy, you can then use FH chip in another week, no sweat. Don't forget we should know the identity of those playing in the BGW (or at least have a very good idea) quite a few weeks in advance of the BGW.

True, but what's the best possible scenario for using the FH chip during a BGW? I'd suggest it would be for tasty match-ups between weak teams and 'strong teams that you don't already own any players from'. That's already a long shot and as you rightly say you'll know beforehand and can prepare for it as usual.

Meanwhile we already know the fixture list and can identify potential lucrative FH opportunities way in advance. Then if they coincide with something like a short term injury or ban to one of our big hitters or a GW where we have a horrible set of fixtures amid great looking ones on GWs either side it could easily be far better to use the FH then than just following the herd into the BGW.

Every week is a potential Free Hit week.

I like the idea of playing it in a normal GW and already have a couple of candidate GWs earmarked. Of course most will play it in a big blank or possibly a DGW and that is a possibility for me too. The great thing about this chip is that there are potentially many creative ways to use it.

Agreed. No point in closing off other potential uses of this new chip by calling them crazy, when one season has not even passed by yet.
There are certainly some single GWs/ "normal" GWs that can be identified, as you say.

You COULD use it on a normal gw and get 100 . It is obviously possible . Using possibility is a silly argument its possible to use it and get 20 points. Strategy is about probability not possibility

Probability is the sum of possibilities. It's not unreasonable to think you might have looked at the last GW and decided I really don't fancy my Liverpool and Man Utd attackers. Jose will probably keep it tight. I'll use my FH chip to bring in the defenders instead and Man City at home to Stoke looks interesting ...

Some have got good scores from playing their Free Hit Chips, many haven't.

The following average overall scores are taken from FPL Discovery:
GW3: Normal Teams 43.2, Free Hit Teams 42.5
GW4: Normal teams 45.3, Free Hit Teams 40.4
GW5: Normal Teams 58.7, Free Hit Teams 58.7
GW6: Normal Teams 59.9, Free Hit Teams 66.6
GW7: Normal Teams 50.4, Free Hit Teams 58.0
GW8: Normal Teams 41.6, Free Hit Teams 45.9

Of course, this also shows how many FPL managers have completely misunderstood the Chip!

Some of those teams will also have had hidden benefits though. Say you have taken an 8 pt hit early in the GW to catch rises and get rid of fallers and those players don't rise or fall but you pick up 2 or 3 injuries in the midweek games while a couple of players you don't have who have tasty fixtures that GW bag hatties, then it would be very tempting to activate the FH chip but it might not show up in the stats.

As you correctly suggest though, it's quite likely that many of those early FHs were either accidental or played by idiots.

My only goal of this post was to prompt discussion, I'm glad to have done so. Playing the hit chip has many psychological factors about it too, and that's probably why I'm considering it this week. All in all, I know that on paper the most "probable" way to play it successfully is BGW, however I would still argue there's a potential for more points elsewhere, and that it may not be too hard to guess.

When we think of the chips, we have to think about how there's only one set of games affected by them, so chance goes way up and truly anything can happen.

I'll be playing it in either a BGW or a DGW. A one off week is always a bit of a lottery, even with form and fixtures. We've seen ample evidence of this thus far, with some ghost ship teams still performing better than experienced managers making prudent picks. I also can't help but notice that in most weeks the scout picks team, in spite of the luxury of a weekly wildcard, gets outscored by most of us. This isn't to disparage their managerial skill, it's to emphasise the luck factor and unpredictability of a one week GW. However, in a BGW or DGW, if you can guarantee having, say, 5-8 more players than you would have done, not take any hits in doing so, in getting them in, and getting them out again, you will have a far better hand going into that GW than you would going into a 'normal' GW. We also don't know the strength of the teams who will be participating in these GWs and their form and fixtures. Playing the FHC blind now is be a big, unnecessary gamble. It could pay off, but I think, all considered, it's odds against

    21. Freddo

Dirty Sanchez, if you use it, make sure you don't have players on the edge of falling in price or you will eat the drops while your chip is in play.

Strategy wise, there's merit in your argument, ignore the noise if you're confident with it, lots of things have to line up though for success.

      Good luck.

I'm also keeping it for a BGW because the memory of owning Carroll, Evans and Phillips is still painful.
If you've decided to use the chip in a normal week I think gw10 is better than gw9 especially if you own Spurs and Man U players.

I used it in GW7 to avoid the Chel/ManC game and load up on ManU & Spurs players.
I scored 107 points, which gave me a GW rank of 249.

GW10 looks like a good opportunity to avoid the ManU/Spurs clash.
Ars/Lpool/ManC/Chel all have 'easier' fixtures that week.

Chances are it would include some of the bigger sides - usually caused by Europe or cup "success",
good chance of getting in 3 Man City + 3 chelsea for 2 games for example.

Sure you don't want Silva? If not then could be smart as it gives you more manoeuvrability, you already have Sterling, easy switch from Kaku to Kun or Morata & then you can also spread the funds about. Yes for flexibility but could leave you at a points deficit, I fancy Silva to do well.

I am very tempted by silva. If I was to make any transfers this week would be alli to silva. Thoughts on making
this move? Only thing is I feel 2FT in gw10 could be better than silva in for alli but that move is tempting

For those of you that like a punt, only 5 teams are profitable so far this season, in order:

    1. Burnley
    2. Watford
    3. City
    4. Palace
    5. Chelsea

This is if you put a $10 single on each week.

So many, I think I heard the phrase "can't run from" and started cracking up before the sentence was finished 😆

Mkhi out for Sterling seems like an insanely sensible move?

    My team is:

    My team is:
    Elliot - Foster
    Bavies - Jones - Yoshida - Naughton - Long
    Salah - Alli - Sterling - Ritchie - Carroll
    Kane - Lukaku - Mounie
    2FT 0.2itb

Is Alli & Mounie > Silva & Abraham the right transfers to do this week?

Has there been any update on Davies illness? Is he likely to play against Liverpool?
