The Gameweek finale falls on Turf Moor, for a Monday night encounter under the lights between Burnley and Newcastle United.

Fantasy interest is limited, in the main, to the defensive players on show. That’s a good thing scanning the statistics building up to this match.

Sean Dyche’s Clarets have scored the fewest home league goals this season, with just two efforts. But his defence have been typically miserly: only Liverpool and Manchester United have allowed fewer goals than the two conceded by Burnley.

Meanwhile, Newcastle arrive boasting just three away goals, only Everton and Crystal Palace have scored fewer.

Their goalkeeper, Rob Elliot, is the most owned player on show this evening. Now part of 26.4% of squads, the Magpies custodian trails only David De Gea (39.2%) in that respect. However, some 62% of Elliot’s 1.4 million owners keep him on the bench for Gameweek 10.

Stephen Ward has become the go-to option in the Burnley defence. The left-back is now owned by 14.7% of managers having already produced a goal and two assists this season, alongside three clean sheets.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

This is my current team. I have 1.2m in the bank. What would you do with it?

    Forster (Elliot)
Kolasinac Gomez S. Ward (Naughton) (Lascelles)
    Sane Sterling Groß Richarlison (RLC)
    Lacazette Aguero Kane

I'll be activating my Wildcard next week so any ideas would be great.

    PRICE MECHANISM

Just wanted to make a couple of observations in the hope that Mark sees them and considers them worthy of consideration.

Recent events with Kane and Lukaku where FPL appear to have introduced "new rules" or applied existing mechanisms in a selective way (i.e. treating those players as if they had a blank week when they don't) are very disquieting.

The bald facts: Lukaku has dropped around 450k owners from peak but only 0.1m in value. Kane has lost more than 700k owners from peak but only 0.1m in value. This is despite both having been above their starting valuation; falls back towards starting level are supposed to be easier.

The Kane instance defies all logic. When he was last at the ownership level he now has he was 12.5m. He really should have fallen to at least that level.

I won't express my personal opinion on all this. But the observation I want to make is that while FPL seeks to 'protect managers', what it is actually achieving by this is to penalise active managers and to protect inactive ones. Is that what they really desire to do? Because one would imagine that active rather than passive managers are what they want. 😕

The way it penalises active managers is that there is a significant chance that when you remove an injured player (if a big name, FPL clearly are less bothered about low-ownership players) you will have to pay more to get them back than what you sold for, despite there being a big market swing.

FPL may be acting with good intentions but should perhaps examine whether they are actually achieving the outcome they really want here.

Hasn't Kane dropped 0.2m from peak? He was 12.8m at one point but now 12.6m

Kane has dropped 0.2m from peak

Dunno if it's still the same, but it used to be something like.. Fall threshold (unless falling below starting value) is the same as the Rise threshold, unless the player is red flagged in which case its increased a fair bit. The threshold this season is something around 55k NTI / NTO. Wildcard transfers in & out don't affect drops.

Agree though there have been some oddities with some players. Even had every single person that wildcarded last week sold Lukaku he should have dropped to 11.6m by now

I'm not sure whether individual player prices are being manipulated or whether it is just a quirk of the new algorithm but if the former then that is clearly wrong. It doesn't matter what the rules are but they should be consistent.

FPLS have noted 2 sets of "rule changes" during this season - meaning changes that weren't there at the start but have been applied subsequently.

As the application of these "new rules" has almost certainly been made subjectively rather than automatically (triggered by a BGW or a DGW for example) then it is manipulation.

FPL reserves the right to do this, so it cannot be complained about. But it seems reasonable to query whether they are actually achieving the outcome they really want.

This is what something I think we'd all like clarity on. Are they achieving what they intended and maybe some further clarification how it isn't just the big players being affected.

Players like Daniels and Mee have been on the cusp of falling for weeks yet somehow haven't. Which is surely impossible especially in Daniels' case. At least Mee has been saving himself with BPS and CSes.

          Clarity is all we ask.

Then it should be interesting to see what they conclude. I’d say it was still very possible that it’s a new rule this season for IB weeks, and the scenario didn’t occur until the second one. So it would appear that the rule was brought in mid-season but really it’s been there since the start. From what I understand from previous seasons and Mark’s comments, things do change over the season as far as the transfer rules are concerned but only tweaks - not completely new rules. Now of course that may have changed this season but I’d like some concrete evidence before I jump to any conclusions.

With both Wild Card and Free Hit chips in play everyweek it is probably an issue with transfers being skewed even more for for the heavily owned players.

Controlling the extremes of movement of price in such cases is not a bad thing in my view, especially as the masses do not follow or analys the potential movement in price in the same way as FFS.

The playing field is being levelled for the masses, will probably keep more players interested and teams live, to the benefit of the overall game.

What is means is that the FPL fanatics will find it harder to mass a huge TV and the advantages it provides, which in my view is a good thing.

Saying that, many on here are already upto a TV of 102 or above, so the new rules are not really changing the overall situation with TV

      1. Jøssy â

Personally, I was probably more like 104.5m TV at this stage of the season last year, easily.

I get that they want to keep less active players involved, but a complete levelling of the playing field that removes more and more benefit from those who plan is altering the skill/luck balance of the game. And it was already a very luck-based game.

In actual fact, I think to some extent the players who plan and strategise are at a disadvantage to those who don't make any effort in some ways this year, because we're adjusting for and reacting to things that are not happening or being strangled.

So some players here who jumped off Lukaku on WC (I'm not one as it happens) have seen a player not behave as they have done all season in the game and are out of pocket.

Price changes do seem to be less volatile this season than they have been for some time, and in some cases perhaps less predictable.

But planning and skill isn't just about price changes. The balance between price changes and points has changed, but maximising points with slower price changes still requires planning and skill.

Oh, for sure mate. I'm not suggesting that all the planning and strategy lies within playing the market. But I do feel it's indicative of other moves. For example, the Free Hit chip screams of a Get Out Of Jail Free card for those who didn't see and plan for a blank week.

Granted, the more dedicated players will always find a way to maximise whatever tools and hurdles are put in our way, but it does feel like FPL want to level the playing field a bit to keep more people interested. I just don't think we should make the game easier, just to appease people who don't want to put as much effort in.

I don't get your complaint. Why is last season the benchmark? May be that was an erroneous algorithm that overtly skewed it in favor of those moving early. Players being priced out early meant those who knee-jerked or made impulsive moves were rewarded more. They got price rises if the player didn't play well and jumped on to someone else or in the best case got price rises and points if the player did well. Moving early was like a win-win. I say this because I was priced out of Sanchez and Hazard so fast last year from GW12. It worked out well in that I went for Mane and Alli, but I was pissed off at the superteams that had them all.

I agree price drops it's probably a little too slow this year but last year was pathetic as someone who doesn't make transfers on Sunday. Doesn't make me a casual or mean I put in less time. In fact, if anything, it took decision making out of my hands. This season, it's good old fashioned your picks vs my picks and I'm very very comfortable with that kind of game.

Agree with this. Most of the rule changes over the last few years have tried to level the playing field, and keep as many active players for as long as possible. Seem the easiest way to do this is to stop very active players from getting a huge advantage in TV, which has its obvious benefits.

I don't agree with price manipulation(if it is in fact being done, still not sure on this, none of us know the actual algorithm, and neither do the price prediction site, it would appear), but to say that FPL are not achieving 'the outcome they really want' is just plain wrong.

What I can't understand (if true) is how much they actually think it is worth to artificially maintain prices of highly owned players.

The average player in my office doesn't know the price of their players until it comes to making a transfer (I help a few of them out occasionally).

The market side of it is a much more in depth part of the game and trying to stabilise it to help the average player surely misses the profile of how they play. If they can't afford someone, they just pick someone else.

I suppose one part is the disparity between selling value and price if a player has risen. Meaning if they sell Kane because he's injured, then he scores against palace and they try to bring him back, they won't be able to (depending on when they bought). Which would be annoying.

I say scrap the .2 = .1 of profit, that way the market would actually be a market and that issue I described goes away

      1. If you take FPL as a game then the rules should be clear & consistent.
2.Essentially FPL is a game of strategy of which buying (& selling) the right players is one of the key elements.
      3. I agree with Ruth - why "protect" inactive managers?
      4. If controlling value against high-value teams is key why put a "most valuable team" table on your home page?
      5. Protecting injured player values is reasonable.
      6. There is already a perfectly fair handbrake on player values in the +/-0.3 value change per week. If a player happens to hit that by Tuesday so be it.
      7. I'm never one that particularly worries about TV. Held several players this season that I knew were dropping but could still be useful in my team. Concentrating on points gives me a current OR of 9k and a TV now down to 101.3..

'The way it penalises active managers is that there is a significant chance that when you remove an injured player you will have to pay more to get them back than what you sold for, despite there being a big market swing.'

Not sure I agree here. I don't understand the definition of active manager vs passive manager. One who likes to make lots of transfers over one who doesn't take hits? In my view stronger managers don't place huge focus on price changes in any event.

Managers just have to factor this rule change into their thinking.

I understand that being unaware of this change until now is frustrating but we just have to roll with the punches. ALL managers in the same boat. The best managers will adapt.

Clearly not all managers are in the same boat...those in the know and those who are inactive will benefit.

'Those in the know' = the people that agreed the rule change and those that enforced it. There are 5m people in this game. I don't care if a few know that a players price will/won't change.

what is the definition of 'inactive'? I have made 8 transfers and used 1 WC. I still hold Kane but sold Lukaku. Am I inactive or active?

Active. I have only made 9 transfers myself.

It isn't a level playing field. Take Sanchez as an example. Started the season with 126k owners, valued at 12m. Dropped to 103k and fell to 11.9m. Rose to 132k but didn't rise. Fell back to 109k and the priced dropped again to 11.8m. Rose to 180k and didn't rise. Is now on the way to a 3rd fall which will probably happen before he gets back to the ownership level he started with.

Who cares? Not many, because he's low owned. FPL are protecting high-owned players while allowing low-owned ones to get hammered. And that is yet another reason pushing people to follow the crowd rather than striking out on their own. 😕

Benteke, Baines, Lindelof (0.6m drop). Ya, it's like, FPL have realised some players were priced too highly and are dropping the price to fix it.

so the managers that are being punished are those that are more inclined to move away from the template. I understand that argument.

It's subjective though. Either you agree with the philosophy or not.

Coming at it from a different angle I would say Sanchez is over priced so his price should be dropping. His price dropping will make him a better value pick, bringing him into the thinking of good (active) managers.

Now that you know about this rule change would you actually act any differently? Would you have actually held a player instead of selling.

The better managers i.e. you, sell/buy based largely on points not price changes.

I wonder to what extent the WCs & Free Hit chip impact on the market? Surely they can't be soley attributed to the point Ruth is making.
Similarly, the flags can't be blamed either. Has Lukaku had one this year?
When stripped to the bones, FPL is a game of buying and selling players. If the market is being manipulated, as Ruth suggests, the game is indeed broken.

      Absolutely Ruth_NZ!!!

It seems FPL Towers are continually trying to "level the playing field", and making it harder to active or well planned managers to gain an advantage. That just adds to the luck factor of a game that we already accept has a large portion of luck driving our results.

They really need to stop dismissing their avid players and appealing to the lowest common denominator. It will kill the game.

Nah it won't kill the game and FPL towers know exactly what they are doing. Their game has been rapidly growing in recent years and the massive jump in marketisation and commercialisation witnessed last year is clearly designed to bring in new players and raise awareness of the game outside the hardcore base. They are following similar commerical tactics and the same trajectory as American fantasy football in achieving mass appeal.

The player price market manipulation tactics that are most certainly at play with Lukaku, ruffles many hardcore players feathers but that is outweighed by keeping casuals happy for as long as possible into the season. The majority of casuals have Lukaku and for him to drop back down to 12.5 sale value frustrates people and for instance means one can't do a straight swap to Kane.

Tactics such as this go hand-in-hand with all of the new spoon feeding from the FPL show and The Scout that are designed to level the playing field substantially, which keeps more players playing and grows the game.

But this is my point. Yes, they do not what they're doing, in terms of maximising their commercial appeal by appealing to as many people as possible by leveling the the playing field.

Re-reading your first line again, you seem to be agreeing that it won't kill the game. It'll only become more popular to the masses, BUT to the detriment of the enjoyment of hardcore players you refer to, who after all are a big part of the reason they even have this fantastic base to work form to reach all the more casual players.

Yes my point is that FPL towers does not really care if the appeal is lessened among hardcore players as long as the casuals are appeased and the game keeps growing.

Let's face it no matter what they do most of us hardcore players will keep coming back. Yes it really does blow that they take us for granted but c'est la vie.

So overall I just mean from their perspective they are indeed achieving their desired outcomes, which is what the eloquent antipodean ape above was worried about.

I don't know to much about the actual maths when it comes to price rises and falls. I thought that maybe the price fall was some how related to percentage owned, maybe higher owned players drop slower? But the numbers don't seem to add up when comparing Salah's drop least week to Kanes. Salah the higher owned player drops 0.1m from a couple of hundred thousand sales where as Kane's dropped three times that. Is this down to the fact Kane's price went up then down meaning the 2nd price change of the week requires more transfers and now being the 3rd even more is needed? Having said that Aguero went up by 0.3m with a similar amount of transfers to Kane.

It doesn't seem right that the 2nd price change of the game-week requires more than the first when it's in the opposite direction.
That is something that ought to be changed IMO.

I do think the price change system is flawed as there seems to be not specific pattern or consistency. Mee being a prime example. I do wonder if aguero Kane morata injuries combined with back to back assists have saved lukaku from plummeting like a lead balloon.

Not that it will ever, ever happen but I would personally love it if they scrapped price changes altogether. This whole side game about gambling on price changes is a chore for me, I'd much rather just concentrate fully on trying to assemble a team who will score fantasy points.

I disagree slightly as price rises reward players for getting the right pick and vice verse with the players that fall. If there was no price changes then it would be very easy for everyone to have the same team and make the game less spectacular

Personally I think lack of price changes would encourage diversity - it's pretty clear that a lot of managers buy and sell players because price changes make their minds up for them, they're effectively swept along by not wanting to be priced out of a particular player proving popular.

If they knew the prices were static it offers up the freedom to choose someone completely unpopular without being punished by not gaining team value.

Not sure I see how that would help. Sure, it removes the driver behind early transfers but it would still likely result in people flocking to and from the same groups of players that they know will change price.

It's not early transfers driven by price I don't care for, it's price changes at all. I get the reasons for them and accept they're here to stay but I still don't like them and think they discourage managers from making more interesting/riskier picks.

If they could genuinely hide all raw data from the price change sites then that would help and I'd definitely be in favour of that - no need to save all the changes until the end of the week though, just mask the data. There'd still be a hell of a lot of obvious rises/drops though, it would just make the timings unknown.

The one downside to that... and I can see the argument (even as someone who loves the TV side of the game)... is that in breakout seasons for a Mahrez or a Kane, you're going to have every single player the game owning Kane for 4.5m and Mahrez for 5.5m, with no advantage for early adopters.

And in the example of the Mahrez and Alli season potentially completely throwing budget out the window and removing the need to think smart about how you get a smattering of premium picks in there

Sadly, I'm not currently in a state of health to debate or analyse this but I will come back to this in the international break. I don't have any input or insight into what's being tweaked in the algorithm. I do know that 75% flags no longer wipe out NTI and that's a good thing so I presume that, having introduced that, ISM are probably more hands on with the algorithm while they monitor the impact of the change.

All I will say is that there's a danger that our opinion on what is "wrong" currently is based on our expectations raised by what has become accepted as correct in the past, based on third party tools and an acceptance of how the algorithm works.

The reason why nothing transparent is given on the algorithm is so that ISM can choose to tweak and manage on the fly.

I'm pretty sure nothing is set in stone and the algorithm can change again.

All I can do at this point is try to make ISM aware of the concerns, when I'm back on my feet I'll look into this more.

My main game is AFL Fantasy (aussie rules).

In this game, price changes are dictated by performance with a breakeven system to determine the size of the rise/loss. This rewards people who actually make good picks. There is no stress regarding early transfers.

      It is infinitely better.

Maybe their 'objective' is to stop people knowing the price changes before they happen, stopping those who check every day from gaining an advantage over the more 'casual' player. Success in this game should be about scoring points, not successfully negotiating price changes better than someone else because you go on a different website every day to check. If FPL wanted people to know the price changes, they would tell us themselves.

I take some of what you're saying on board, but years before I even knew of the existence of FFS or preice predictions websites (I've been playing 13/14 years, and caught on to FFS 3 years ago), I always used to ensure I got on bandwagon's early.

I was able to go by gut feel of when a bandwagon was taking off, and I actually monitored the Transfers In/Transfers Out stats on FPL to help inform my gut.

I seem to recall I was fairly accurate in understanding when my players were due to drop or targets were likely to rise. So I don't think it's always about people almost cheating by being spoonfed price rise information. I personally was going to some effort to keep on to of the market.

Is it possible the price change sites are not able to reflect wildcard and free hit chip usage, resulting in false expectations on ownership change? Might be a high percentage of Kane dumping was under Free Hit chip, which is a temp drop. Just thinking out loud.

I have absolutely no idea why they can't make the price change system transparent. They must know a lot of people play in mini leagues for money but it's hard to have a serious competition when one of the main game rules is deliberately withheld. It's like playing chess without knowing what the knight does.

They claim on the site that price changes are dictated by the transfer market but Sanchez shows this demonstrably isn't true. Starts at 12.0 with 126k owners, now is 11.8 with 179k and probably going to drop again. Or de Bruyne who started at 1.2m owners and now has 1.0m but is 0.1 above base price.

There's absolutely no consistency and, for me at least, it makes the game less fun to play. One of the keys to enjoying strategy games is knowing all the rules and we simply don't.

I would agree with the opinion that is there definitely an element of price fixing by FPL towers. What I will say is I don't think it's anything new, in previous seasons there were examples of what looked to be fairly blatant examples.

Perhaps it more prevalent this time around.

For me personally I think to gain advantage we adjust to the game we are playing. From early in the season price changes seemed to not

Judging by the number of upvotes for the OP I think I am in the minority here, but the idea of an integrity issue seems misguided to me: am I the only one who sees FPLStats and the other price change sites as a cheat that I access and use over those who aren't aware of their existence?

FPL gives what it gives as far as information: transfers in and out by the week, and from that people should be able to make a crude guess as to whether a player might be likely to rise or fall. Yet we have access to these data scraping sites that give us very detailed and fairly accurate predictions of exactly how much time we have to make decisions whereas the masses who just use FPL do not. The integrity issue might lie more firmly in the laps of those FFS users who have streams of information, opinion, and judgment flowing to them while participating in minileagues against mainstream FPL users, actually. Sharks and fish at a poker table have nothing on FFS diehards and FPL casuals swimming in the same pool.

The cases of Lukaku and Kane are certainly compelling as far as some sort of intervention happening to control their price activity, but if I recall RVP in his heyday and Aguero in the past few seasons also enjoyed a similar privileged status, so it might not be a new manipulation for this year.

And, I can use my special status of a 3M rank this year to tell you that there are probably about 35,000 people in the FFS leagues (near my rank in that league) among a total FPL population of 5.3M -- we are in an echo chamber here that might not be that significant to FPL overall. If you want to know more about how casuals and dead teams are faring, I'm happy to share updates seeing as I am like Rick or the rest of the gang in the apocalypse smearing zombie blood all over themselves so that the walkers don't sniff them out. In essence, we are The Walking Dead, wandering from gameweek to gameweek trying to find safe harbor.

Thanks for this excellent hot topic.

I want to look at one particular angle on this, which has always bothered me about the price changes.

Let’s get back to first principles. FPL set prices for every player. They do a pretty good job. But some players are underpriced, and everyone wants them, some are overpriced.

Now in theory, the price changes should be used to correct this as a season progresses: those players in demand should see their price rise. Overpriced players should see their price fall. In a perfect market, every player should be owned equally.

Now, to date, the price change system has only relied on the flow of transfers.

But what if they have also started looking at the stock of ownership?

An example to illustrate. Many people have sold Lukaku. But he is still in over half of teams. He is in demand. If anything, his price should be higher, not lower.

In contrast, only 3 per cent of people want Sanchez. People think he is not worth it at that price. So his price should keep falling until he is attractive to potential buyers.

Is it possible they have started looking at stock of ownership as well as flows as a moderating effect on prices?

Price changes should all happen during a weekend lockout period. They shouod change to reflect reality. Ie if there is a new Mahrez change his price from 5m to 8 m in one go, during the lockout, none of this 0.1 stuff.

When players are sold they sell for the price that was paid for them.

        Advantages
1)Weekly excitement of waiting to see the new price list
        2) No losing money from holding differentials
        3) rewarded for buying good pick early as late adopters forced to pay a realistic price
        4) Not forced to sell a player because of the fickle herd

I like some of what you're saying. Holding off price till before the deadline (or just after) makes perfect sense.

But I would suggest that it works on the current basis, i.e. a play gets a hug influx of buyers and he could rise by 0.3 in one go at the end of the week. Jumping a Mahrez from 5.5m to 8m in one go is mental.

That at least resolves the problem of managers being forced into early transfers because they know they won't be able to afford their target if they wait till Sat, but the player could get injured in the midweek games.

How much of an advantage would you have over me if you bought him in GW1, and by the time I got on board in GW3 I'm having to pay 2.5m more?? That would create too much advantage for early adopters in my opinion.

Yeah i agree. Firstly DDG now is 5.7, can get Jones at 5.3. Courtois is 5.4 and other Chelsea defenders are very expensive, plus they have great fixtures. While pope offers value, you can get Ward/Mee etc at a similar price.

In all fairness, it much depends on the formation you are going with. If it's 2 big strikers, then switching Lukaku with Kun or Morata depending on fixtures could work.

I've already owned a big 3 of Kane/Morata/Lukaku this season before the Spaniard's injury and will be looking to get back to it soon; I love the consistency and the nailedoness of those 3.

I've been taking screenshots of my final weekly rankings for the past few years based on somebody's suggestion on this site several years ago. It's interesting to perform progress checks against past results from time to time.

    GW10 benchmarks vs. prior years:

    current: 586 pts, 70k rank, 102.3 TV
    1 yr ago: 568 pts, 33k rank, 103.1 TV
    2 yrs ago: 508 pts, 179k rank, 103.2 TV
    3 yrs ago: 575 pts, 21k rank, 104.5 TV

One interesting trend is TV, which seems to be harder to come by these days. Can't imagine ever achieving my peak TV of 110.5 again (GW 32 of 2015-16 season). This also seems to be a reasonably high-scoring year based on recent historical standards, although it certainly doesn't feel that way. Anybody else tracking against past results?

      You've consistently started pretty well!

High TVs definitely a thing of the past. Don't get why people still chase it as if nothing's changed.

Ya but with the increase in players, the points spread between each 100k rank is very small so its not entirely relative if you don't factor in the total no. of players

Only pressing issues are Atsu, Davies and Cresswell. Hold out and save FT?

    Elliott Fabianski
    Davies Jones Mee Cresswell Mbemba
    Silva Shaqiri Salah Atsu Carroll
    Kane Morata Aguero

I'm looking for the cheapest defender (4.1m) that has a chance of getting some game time up to January.
Are there any hidden magic been seeds out there?
Mbemba looks a dead duck, Mariappa to get the odd game?

I would try to pay lil bit more and get nailed on defenders...

Even if likes of Mariappa start, we dont know when they will, they might not start in weeks where we need them 😳

Good advice mate but it would be to get Kane in if he's passed fit!
Jesus + Bellerin to Kane + 4.1. A fit and firing Kane might justify it.

    Elliott, Foster
    Davies, Jones, Mee, Hegazi, Mbemba
    Sterling, Eriksen, Salah Atsu Carroll
    Kane, Jesus, Vardy

Hegazi, Mbemba and Atsu stinking up the place. Suggestions dependent on Kane obv.1FT 0.8 ITB

    A) Hegazi > Daniels or Pool defender
    B) Atsu > Gross
    C) Jesus > Abraham to free up funds for Lukaku next week
    D) Save

I was on about Atsu. Hegazi is one of those players that just lingers because I always have something better/important to do.
