The ScoutCast – Episode 245 – Conjury

The first ScoutCast of 2018 is sprinkled with a festive catch-up, an assessment of the latest transfer bandwagons and even some logic-defying magic.

YouTube viewers will need to pay close attention to Granville and Jonty about 1 minute and 56 seconds in to catch their conjuring trick; others will just have to use their imagination and be content with the rest of this 90-minute marathon episode.

We explore the lure of Aguero, the clamour for Lingard and the Fantasy freak of nature that is Marcos Alonso. Third striker options are assessed, we conduct a post-mortem on Liverpool following Coutinho’s exit and we start hatching plans for February’s forthcoming blank before the usual Gameweek preview ends proceedings.

Next week Granville saws Jonty in half and Az pulls a rabbit out of his hipster beard.

This ScoutCast was first beamed live via our YouTube channel on Tuesday evening. Be sure to subscribe to get notice of future live episodes.

Where do you draw the line with being patient with a player?
My season has been drastically effected by two transfers and by being patient with two players: Sane + Alli.

    Sane
Transfer: I bought in GW12 for Sterling.
    Sold: This week
    Output: 7,1,0,2,2,0,10,3,1,2,5
    PPG: 2.8
(Sterling by contast - PPG: 7.6!)

    Alli
Transfer: I bought in GW11 for Coutinho.
    Sold: GW19
    Output: 0,2,6,2,2,6,1,1
    PPG: 2.5
(Coutinho by contast - PPG: 6.25!)

As you can see, patience killed me with their shocking output over my period of ownership!
In addition I lost a whopping 0.9m in value!

TBF Sane was looking very good and Alli looked to be coming into form! I know that I held tham way too long and made big errors but they are very good players we are talking about! Hindsight is great 😉

There's a lot of research in psychology and finance that shows that selling a losing position on a trade is very difficult because it's a tacit admission of failure, which is difficult for most of us.

Same mistake I made. I picked up alli on gw4 wildcard over eriksen cause I didn't have 0.1 to spare on eriksen and I lost 0.3 value on alli while eriksen rose to 9.7 and eriksen got so many more points compared to alli

One way is to think less about patience and more about fixtures.

For example I brought in Alli for the double and two more good games. I’ll then dump him gwk 25 when fixtures turn.

Are you not making the switch from Alli or Eriksen to Lingard this week Jonty? I have Son and Alli myself and don't think I can resist the switch the Lingard from Alli, which will also allow an upgrade to Jones for a hit. But it could easily cost me points.

That’s the thing it’s a move that really needs a hit but do I really want to remove a midfielder against a side that has only conceded to midfielders since gwk 13?

Also saving a transfer gives me the chance for a mini wildcard gwk 24 or 25 when fixt turn.

It is tempting to get Lingard I must admit and it’s a decision that will rumble on into sat I reckon. But that’s not a patience thing as all dumpees have only been in my team a short time anyway.

I think in your situation Alonso is too tempting that I would take the hit.

Tough week for transfer though - this feels like the first week that I know my transfers could cost be points. However, in true dullard fashion I am too scared of what a heavily owned Lingard + United defence could do to me.

I’m doing exactly the same with Alli. He’s gone after the next two purely due to fixtures. I won’t be holding him for three tough games just because he won’t blank in GW28, there’s plenty of other options.

Fixtures can also hinder though as you hope that with a continued run of blue games that a player will *finally* find form. I’ve held Hazard too long for this reason; and will likely hold Morata too long also due to Chelsea’s fixtures.

Jonty famously said on the scoutcast last season he gives a player 3 to 4 games to get an attacking return. I guess that is a good rule of thumb.

I know exactly what you mean. Being stubborn or patient or whatever you want to call it can really hurt your team. I held on to Sanchez too long this season and I held onto Firmino too long last season. I remember when Firmino finally got a brace, too much damage had been done for me to even celebrate.

Being patient can pay off, but I think if it gets to the point where when the player FINALLY scores and you barely care because you can't recover the points lost with all the blanks, then that's what you have to be weary of. Getting close to that stage.

Totally agree although the lack of excitement when the player finally scores may be down to no instant gratification from not being a new in the squad. I seem to enjoyed new squad additions scoring points mora than existing player's

Think its a complex thing. I was impatient on Alonso at start of the season and got punished. Patient with Kane paid of. Impatient with sane paid of. So its a matter of luck. But being flexible is key i think. Being patient /impatient doesn't matter, if ur move was wrong, just admit and correct it.

I think the question is what do we show patience for... Is it for form? Seems like it in the above examples. In that case, I agree with Jonty's "rule of thumb" as reported by FPL Virgin.

But patience based on statistics should be different. If statistics prove it, that goal will surely come. And it has to be justified with eye-sight too. Usually it is enough to watch two or three games to feel if that player will score.

In the particular case, I doubt that Sane or Alli would give that feeling so there is obvious error in this judgment. (Of course, it's easy to say that now).

So I think we must decde what we are waiting for.

Very true! Reasons at the time: Coutinho got injured. Sand was a player that I hugely admire and seemed to be coming into great form, but it was a huge error in hindsight!

What makes me laugh is that you are damned if you do, damned if you don't. People claim to be oh so wise about not moving players on or not being patient - bearing on the results of the actions. Where in fact most of the times the decision that has gone wrong was not that bad, just unlucky.

Sure there are some times where it is fairly obvious a move is right or wrong but these are in the minority...

    16. agueroooooney
      • 9 Years

You have to factor in that there's a huge amount of luck now the game. Picking players with the potential to score points is skill but quite often getting them at the right time is luck. All 4 of the most players can be good picks at different times.

You could even argue that you lost out because of your impatience with Coutinho and Sterling. So impatience and patience both hurt you in different ways.

After owning Alonso for GWs 13-17 (before downgrading to Christensen on WC in GW 18), I knew he was a good pick but I thought I'd given him enough chances and 3 ppg over the 5 games wasn't enough to justify his price tag so I shipped him, and we all know how that ended up.

At the same time I still have Sané as I believe he is coming back into form But maybe I'm being overly optimistic. Just need that bit of luck with him but who knows when, if ever, it will come

    17. Pierce34
      • 8 Years

Depends how you define 'patient'. It's arguably stubborn, not patient, to hold an out-of-form player for weeks in the hope that he's 'due'. And trust me, I know, I had Benteke for 5 weeks this year!

Patience partly is knowing when the right time to make your moves is. When I was languishing at 1-2 million earlier this season, I was too impatient - taking out Ramsey for a hit for Sterling, then taking Sterling out for Sanchez for a hit the week after, then another hit to bring Sterling back. I was overcomplicating things because I was trying to make up the gap all in one go. When I decided to take a step back things improved.

Patience is virtue from right players not non nailed like Sane. Villa ronka says hello. He barely does any transfers and again having an exceptional season. I took out kane just before his two hatricks for firmino and then brought him back for hit for his nice blank dgw. Removed hazard looking at his falling stats and Arsenal on horizon. He scored 10 there..Patience is what sets apart me, a 10kish player from legends like Villa ronka

I can understand your patience with Sane as I was in the same boat keeping him for far too long. Booted him for Sterlo.

Alli makes less sense as he has not hit the heights of last season and he is a player I wouldn't buy despite his OOP appeal. Son was more attractive.

I have been far too impatient this season and have been duly punished. Even managed a 42 point loss one week when I failed to show patience and removed players too quickly.

      Sod's law.

    How's it going gentlemen?

Normally not one for RMTs but would appreciate any input. On WC and considering this

    Adrian foster
Alonso Christiansen hegazi Clark 3.7 def
    Sterling KDB lingard albrighton Carroll
    Aguero Kane firmino

Agreed. Would be playing 343 so would have 1 dud def, Clark/hegazi and Carroll on bench each wk. Can only really downgrade Alonso or firmino though and lack of strikers makes the latter difficult. Maybe Alonso to Jones?

Rather Christensen to Jones over Alonso.
In GW28, you could be down 6 main players + bench fodder.

its looks good as long as aguero is only in for 2-3 weeks and then sold to upgrade other areas for the blanks.

Im looking at getting the same front three after this week and getting carroll in as you have to afford it. Will be playing 3-4-3 for the next two weeks maybe three and then aguero is going to fund the upgrades and a shift back to 3-5-2

      Hey. Can anyone lend a hand. Doing OK this season and currently leading my leagues but started to double guess my transfers now;

      DDG
      Masuaku | Azpilicueta | Smalling
      Sane | Salah | KDB | Arnautovic | Lingard (C)
      Firmino | Rooney

      Pope | Calvert-Lewin | Otamendi | Robertson

      2 FT & 1.1M ITB

Firmino, Rooney & Robertson > Laca, Carroll, Christensen

      Firmino, Rooney, Sane, Robertson >
      Laca, Carroll, Alonso, Richarlison

Rather not take the 8 point hit. Anyone got alternatives/suggestions?

I was flicking between KDB, Sane and Sterling. Kept getting stung on KDBs quiet weeks.

Hadn’t had the chance to drop Rooney or DCL. DCL low price happy to bench for a few weeks. Rooney been killing me.

Best striker in the league. Red hot form. Explosive. Nailed for 90 minutes. Good fixture. Highly owned and highly captained, so unless you are trying to catch up, he is “safe” to captain.

Think GW28 could be a good time for the free hit chip. Yes only 4 teams may be missing, but three of them are the most significant FPL teams along with Liverpool.

Could also use FTs to slowly prepare for it, by taking out Morata, then Lingard and Jones later (aiming for just Alonso, Otamendi and Sterling benched for that week since too much value lost by selling them).

                  1. Licious Lizard (delete acc)
                      6 years, 2 months ago

Of course it depends on your team.
Another reason (besides points) that DDG is a better pick than Jones.

DDG is not a better pick than Jones IMO because Pope has been beating him for value.

But Mee was really good value earlier as well.
Just saying that DDG is easier to maneuver with during blanks and DGWs than Jones, which is why I would choose him over Jones at this point

Shocked to see Hazard with under 7% in the captaincy poll. I think that people are really overlooking him. Although he has only gotten 1 return of over 6 since gw 16 only 3 of those games were with Morata. With Morata he has averaged almost 3 more ppm (excluding the games where he has played under 25 mins) than without him. He has averaged 9 ppm (excluding the games where he has played under 25 mins) against a non top 6 side with Morata. Also, he is playing against Leicester City who have allowed 2 goals or more in 4 of their last 5 games and the one game where they didn't was against Huddersfield who have scored the forth least amount of goals this season. Kane has the most by over 35% but he has only averaged 5.4 ppm against non top 6 teams at home this season. Also, Spurs opponent, Everton, has only allowed 6 goals in their last 9 games and that includes a 0-0 game vs. Chelsea and a 1-1 game vs. Liverpool.

Might just be a scared non owner of Kane but I am definitely going to be going with Hazard(c) this week.

True but Chelsea can't afford to drop more points and I don't think they'll need him vs. Norwich so he will have a full week's rest. If he is subbed off early the game will likely to have been already won.

More lazy that tired i think.

I get the feeling that he is not putting the effort in every game like he should be probably because he has already got one eye on the World Cup but that does not mean he could not turn the style at any given game.

it is just hard to predict what side of the bed Eden will get out of on match days at the moment.

Good point. Rather inconsistent and a bunch of his hauls come out of the blue. Seems to be similar to Kane and if people are sticking it on him than why not stick it on Hazard.

Hazard looked fantastic in his last league game
Morata is still hitting the target and one goal will see him more confident

How did you come to first start playing fpl?

For me it was it was when a mate CJ Fitzgearld explained the concept to me at a house party one night while i was just lets say having a moment of light experience back around 2007.

I was pretty new to the internet at the time, i think i just brought my first laptop around a year before that but with my love of football it took me no time to get into it.

I have crossed the spectrum of been an fpl manager over the years from casual to sometimes dead team status as well as been a total fpl addict where the game was never far away from my thoughts with varying degrees of success.

We played a poor imitation of fpl previously, I think it was something to do with Chanel 4 but could be wrong.

When we decided to use the official FPL I was extremely lucky to stumble across FFS and quickly learned the ways from the likes of mark, Granville, apple inkers, JWP and the quick whit of RBJ

Those prehistoric fpl games must have been hard work.

My uncle Gearoid finished 3rd in Ireland in a tabloid fpl back in the day, i think it was The Sun league and it was done through the post but his wife made him give it up on threat of divorce because of all the time he spent reading sport pages in news papers back before the internet came in.
