Assessing Mahrez’s Season So Far

Leicester winger Riyad Mahrez (£8.6m) was the highest scoring Fantasy Premier League player in the 2015/16 season, surprising almost everyone with 17 goals and 11 assists. He ended  the Foxes’ audacious title-winning season with 240 points, which was 40 points more than his nearest midfield rival, Arsenal’s Mesut Ozil.

After a disappointing campaign last season, Mahrez is currently the sixth highest points scorer in the game. This begs the question: is the Mahrez of old back with us?

With Leicester’s fixtures looking very favourable (WAT, eve, SWA, mci, STK, BOU), this is a question worth answering. Indeed, assuming he doesn’t switch clubs in the January transfer window, Leicester’s remaining 15 fixtures look very promising with Manchester City, Arsenal and Spurs the only tricky encounters from now until the end of the season.

My top target currently, especially with those fixtures.

So far this season he's delivered returns against a range of teams but his three double digit hauls have come against easy sides - Swansea, Huddersfield and Brighton. Bodes well.

In contrast Vardy has scored against Liv, ManU, Tott, Everton, Liverpool, Huddersdield, Chelsea, Arsenal. So clearly prospers against better sides that attack and give him space.

Wish I could get mahrez in. I'm currently owning albrighton and a double up could be on the cards once spurs fixtures turn

Would you sell Alli to get him now? Or wait another GW?

I'm seriously considering Eriksen to Mahrez.

Alli has five goals in his last four against Southampton - he's going nowhere this week.

Why should that matter, considering that the last 4 PL games were with 3 differnt coaches - Koeman, Puel and Pellegrino, and defense lines of VVD and Fonte in most cases. Neither of who are in the club at present.
It's not like Tottenham / Southampton is a jinx fixture or something. I believe Alli's performance against Southampton is because he is a very good player. That it's Southampton and not say West Brom is just happenstance.

It shouldn't but it does. If a player believes they will always score against a side then that adds to their confidence - which is important. Look at Hazard before he plays Bournemouth - he says before each match I will score against them - and he always delivers.

Thank you for publishing this, Jonty. Much appreciated.

Indeed Mahrez and Vardy should be an interesting duel
.. one that's given extra spice if you and Mark opt for one over the other 😉

It's also worth looking at Leicester under Puel http://www.fantasyfootballscout.co.uk/2018/01/08/the-new-manager-effect/ - there xG Delta suggests they have overachieved since their new manager took over.

Just did Alli to Mahrez, could be a week too early, but Watford at home based on current form looks a good shout for goals

      Hi Jonty.

Can you suggest how I best use my 2FT (£0) in the bank:

      Fabianski
      Otamendi / Mee / Masuaku
      Salah / Sterling / Arnie / Alli
      Kane / Firmino / Morata

      Elliot / Kabasele / Mee / RLC

      Cheers

Could easily see him share time with Hazard, Willian and Pedro if going to Chelsea

      Yep.

I do however, believe he is back to top form and expect him to continue his form if he stays with the foxes.

Brought him in for Alli last week to avoid being priced out. I have high expectations with those fixtures coming up, surely a captaincy option vs. Watford.

Erik to Mahrez Imo is the way to go... Although I'd probably wait till later in the week because I really don't want to get effed over by the transfer window.

It's nice to see Son mentioned in the article and Mahrez certainly does look tasty.

Being around he same price (Son's 8.2m vs Mahrez's 8.6m) & with similar points/PPG, they fit a nice hole in a midfield 4/5.

How do you think these two stack up going forward from this point in the season? Short term (next 4), Mahrez of course has the upper hand, but I'm thinking longevity.

Is it a good idea to have both of these assets? I imagine most can only afford one, without major surgery. For example, I have Son but also want Mahrez.

Is it worth dropping Son in his great form (but tough fixtures)? I may want him back afterwards.

    What do we think?

I think it's very viable, I will probably drop eriksen then bring him back a few gameweeks forward.
