The Digest – Gameweek 3

Our final look back at Gameweek 3 assesses Bournemouth’s hat-trick hero, City’s perfect combination of form and fixtures, and the growing competition for our attention in the Chelsea midfield…

The Player

Callum Wilson’s clinically taken hat-trick at Upton Park earned Bournemouth their first ever win in the Premier league and has sparked a major bandwagon across the Fantasy games.

With many wildcards being wielded, the Cherries lone frontman picked the perfect time to announce himself as a value candidate for our three-man frontlines, with over 166,000 Fantasy Premier League (FPL) managers snapping up his services. As Fantasy managers search for this year’s Charlie Austin, who scored 18 times for promoted QPR last term, Wilson has subsequently risen from 5.4 to his original 5.5 starting price.

Delving into the data further, Wilson’s displays suggest he’s a viable option both home and away. Thanks to his weekend showing, the Bournemouth frontman has now scored more away goals than any other player in the top four tiers since the start of last season (15), with Eddie Howe’s team tailor-made to utilise his pace and movement on the counter. The Cherries, meanwhile, have won 17 penalties since the start of last season – three more than any other club in the top four leagues.

With the Upton Park result handing them a major morale boost, Bournemouth can approach their upcoming fixtures with renewed confidence. Eddie Howe’s side racked up 98 goals on their way to winning the Championship last season and with the likes of Simon Francis, Matt Ritchie and Max Gradel all supplying the creativity, Wilson’s growing band of owners have every reason for optimism ahead of four very strong showdowns in the next five (LEI, nor, SUN, WAT).

The Team

After three rounds of fixtures, Manchester City look in ominous form after a 2-0 win at Everton continued their 100% start to the season.

Manuel Pellegrini’s men sit at the top of the table, with nine goals scored and a trio of clean sheets accrued, and with an outstanding schedule to follow, many Fantasy managers are scrambling to load up on their main men.

Up next for the Etihad side are four home matches (WAT, WHM, NEW, BOU) allied with trips to Palace and Spurs in the next six Gameweeks which should allow Sergio Aguero the chance to run riot as a captaincy option.

Whilst few will be willing to go into that period without the Argentine on board, the battle is on for our attentions further back. Yaya Toure and David Silva look the chief midfield protagonists, though Raheem Sterling threw his hat in the ring with an assist at Goodison – for those who cannot stretch to Silva’s 10.1 price tag, Sterling is now just 0.1 more expensive than the Ivorian (8.9 to 8.8).

At the back, Aleksandar Kolarov’s 15-point haul against the Toffees moved the left-back to joint-second in the overall FPL standings along with team-mate Vincent Kompany. Although the Belgian is, overall, the more secure pick, Kolarov’s raids down the left and understanding with Sterling have proven a key weapon in the opening three outings. With Gael Clichy still building up his sharpness, there’s a growing belief that Pellegrini will tinker as little as possible as he looks to maintain momentum and move further away from the chasing pack.

The Talking Point

It took Pedro just 20 minutes to announce himself to Fantasy managers after opening the scoring in Chelsea’s 3-2 win at West Brom on Sunday afternoon.

By the time the final whistle went at the Hawthorns, the Spaniard had also bagged an assist and maximum bonus points, serving up a 13-point haul on his debut for the defending champions. Given that Eden Hazard has managed just eight points in his first three appearances, it’s easy to see why over 190,000 FPL managers have already snapped up his new team-mate.

Coming in at 9.5 to Hazard’s 11.5, Pedro offers an obvious alternative to the pricier Belgian as a route into Chelsea’s attack. Whilst there’s no questioning Hazard’s Fantasy potential – 14 goals and ten assists in each of the last two seasons says it all – Pedro’s acquisition perhaps indicates that the former Lille man may not be quite as “essential” in many managers’ eyes.

Whilst Hazard ultimately saw off the challenge of Cesc Fabregas as the prime Chelsea midfield pick last year, Pedro brings a far greater goal threat than his compatriot, having chalked up a 15.7% conversion rate in La Liga last term.

Certainly, the weekend showing has had an effect. Although he still sits in over 42% of FPL teams, Hazard has been sold by 404,000 FPL managers since the start of the season – over 110,000 more than any midfielder – and, along with Wayne Rooney, has been identified as the prime source of freeing up cash for our 15-man squads.

Whether Pedro can rival Hazard overall remains to be seen but with a 2.0 difference in cost, the Spaniard’s value for money is clearly set to play a part in how many assess the Chelsea attack from here on in.

On another note...the picture in this article reminded me that i'm really pleased for Wilson. Whether he proves himself as another Austin/Ings is yet to be seen...but i'm glad he's off the mark and has opened his Premiership account.

Did you bring Hazard to sell him after 3 gameweeks? No, you brought him so he can score those 230 points for you this season. Koscielny -> Kolarov is enough

          were they?

they barely created any chances playing at home in a match they really needed to win.

the only clear-ish chance they had was a slice from Giroud which Migs did well to save.

Sanchez also hit the post when he should have scored. I thought we were good defensively and made it difficult for them to penetrate us. I don't see Newcastle doing that

Well, maybe not crazy, but surprising, and that they've gone 3 matches in a row with against odds low scoring is quite crazy, and in any event unsustainable.

I agree on both accounts. It is a bit mental, but the goals will come. Sanchez should have done better, but I felt there was a solid 20-30 minutes that Pool clung onto the match. Fair play to them for doing so, but this completely out played stuff is rubbish.

Using % change improvements in statistics like Goal Attempts, Shots Inside the Box, Chances Created, and Big Chances:

Chelsea have improved by 70.5%, on average, across these 4 key attacking areas based on the statistics.

A very interesting number andI really think there's going to be a Chelsea resurgence and CPL at home is the perfect fixture for it to begin!

Arsenal look decent at the back while Newcastle are woeful going forward. I'd remove Azpi if I were to get Kolarov

So you mean the 2-0 home loss to West Ham & the palace game?

I back Chelsea to get more clean sheets than Arsenal. Azpi has also got an assist & a goal in his last 3.

Yes I did mean those two games, if it weren't for those howlers they would have kept at least one clean sheet.

That's why I'm looking to wait - maybe one more game week would give me more time to judge.

I think it's a risk to go without a city defender for the Watford game, especially as you can do it so easily.

I'd want either Yaya or Silva too

lol... if you only look at the scoreboard, you can imagine that West Ham and Palace terrorized Arsenal defence. That didn't happen, though.

I am still not convinced Pedro is nailed on. I am sure a few will disagree on here.

He's been dubbed as a 'Mourinho player' because he appears to be tracking back because he runs like a headless chicken, but he is actually quite poor defensively. We all know what happened to Schurrle, Salah, and Cuadrado - wide players in the front three that could not track back properly. Pedro will track back, but he can't tackle to save his life (unlike Willian and Oscar, who are both good tacklers).

Surely, he went to Chelsea being promised starts, much like Cesc. But the first time he misses a foraging fullback on the overlap, things may change.

In a lot of ways it's an odd transfer, because he's never really been a regular starter in his career, save for some brief spells due to injuries. He's still only 28, but after you've spent most of your career as a sub player, it's a different mentality.

Even if he starts most games, he will be the prime candidate to be the first one hauled off.

I am still unsure of his FPL potential, especially at 9.5. Not set pieces and not nailed on (?), albeit playing for a good team that should score goals. It's not crazy to assume he will score 10 and assist 10 in the league, is that good enough return for 9.5? I guess so?

He was signed and then made the team after like what, 3/4 days?

He is nailed imo. Pedro works hard , thats his game. Dont worry about him not tracking back he wont be dropped for that reason.

But I agree im not sure on his 9.5m price tag.

For me it will be either Costa or Oscar if I buy a Chelsea attacker.

Hazard too expensive, and with Pedro added into the mix, I think Costa will be the one to benefit the most.

And if Oscar pins down the no. 10 spot, he is a bargain at 8.5(?)...I forget exactly how much he is atm.

      I agree with this.

I think Oscar is the first choice 10, and him and Fabregas have an important partnership, and I can't see Willian benched all season.

      1m overpriced, imo.

        • 10 Years
        9 years, 29 days ago

          • 11 Years

What exactly is this based on?

Oscar and Fabregas interchange forward and backwards, it's how Fabregas can add creativity without the team losing all structure, whereas Fabregas has only played 1 game with Pedro at Chelsea...

Is going without any Swans attack on a WC madness given their start? Think Gomis is the best pick (as he has pennas) but concerned re: lack of bonus when scoring. Ayew's stats are fantastic but not sure there's room in my current mid. A cheap Siggy might also be an option, but can maybe wait a little for that?

Benteke not wholly convinced yet...but i think i saw enough in Liv's attack (esp Firminho/Countinho) to keep faith for their upcoming home games...

But who'd you prefer Gomis or Benteke?? (extra money from Gomis would prob be spent getting Skertl over Gomez and a better keeper!)

If Kos is not stated to be out for long, and his price is not dropping, I would prefer to hold and if he does not play, I will play (or just get) Francis (off the bench). If Kos is stated at some point this week to be out for a bit, then I am inclined to sell quickly for a Pool defender such as Clyne.

Hazard is such a consistent points scorer over a season but with Pedro in the mix now, will that lessen Hazard's potential point tally?

Is it worth doing Hazard --> Pedro and reinvesting the cash elsewhere?

But yes, pedro is a good choice. Also, its a game of decisions

I do not agree that Pedro is "just as much a superstar." Barca is my fave team and I have watched most of their matches of the past 3 years, and while Pedro did not play every game, when he did play (and I know he is over-shadowed by Messi, Iniesta, and more recently Suarez and Neymar), he was not a "superstar" out there. He provided excellent speed, width, and some finishing, but I also saw him miss quite a few goal scoring opportunities.

Alternatively, Sanchez also did not greatly shine at Barca due to the abundance of offensive talent they had/have, and when he moved to the EPL, he quickly became a superstar. Perhaps the same is in store for Pedro.

      Point-counterpoint...I guess we will see!
