Scout Notes

Scout Notes – Gameweek 5 – Monday

Dimitri Payet scores both West Ham’s goals as Slaven Bilic’s men earn a first home victory of the season. The Hammers also earn a third clean sheet of the campaign as visitors Newcastle fail to find the net for the fourth successive league outing.

Payet at the Double

West Ham secured their third win of the campaign courtesy of a brace from Dimitri Payet. The France international steered the ball into the top corner from 20 yards for the Hammers’ opener, before claiming his second with a rebound from a Victor Moses strike. Payet now boasts three goals and one assist in five outings, having contributed to 11 goals (four goals and seven assists) in his previous 13 league appearances (including Ligue 1).

Priced at 7.6, Payet is sure to enjoy an increase on his 8.4% ownership in the wake of his double against the Magpies. Although the Irons next face a Manchester City rearguard that’s yet to concede this term, a strong trio of fixtures (NOR, sun, cry) beyond Gameweek 6 look more conducive to attacking returns. Certainly, many Fantasy managers will be eager to source coverage from Slaven Bilic’s outfit, given that they rank joint-top – alongside Man City and Leicester City – for goals scored (11) this term.

Victor Moses (5.3) and Mark Noble (5.5) served up the assists, with the former making his debut for the club. Moses looks to have edged ahead of fellow new boy Michail Antonio in Bilic’s first-team plans but Noble is making a strong case for investment in light of his recent productivity (two goals and one assist). The newly instated West Ham captain benefits from penalty duty and has tallied the same number of shots inside the box (four) as Payet.

Having conceded six goals in their two match-ups at the Boleyn Ground, the Hammers were much tighter at the back this time around, registering their second clean sheet on the trot and third of the campaign. A shut-out on the Sky Blues’ home turf will likely be a step too far, yet their trips to Sunderland and Crystal Palace offer encouragement on the defensive front, considering they’re one of four sides not to concede on the road.

Magpies Woes Continue

Newcastle slumped to their fourth successive defeat on Monday night, underlining their current irrelevance on the Fantasy scene. The Toon have now lost eight of their last 10 away clashes and – with Man City next on their road schedule – that inglorious statistic is unlikely to change any time soon. Furthermore, the Tynesiders have tasted victory just three times in 24 matches this calendar year.

Next on the agenda for Steve McClaren’s beleaguered troops is a home tie against Watford. The Hornets have proved to be a tough nut to crack on their travels this term, conceding just 14 shots inside the box and two big chances, and arrive on the back of three clean sheets in the last four matches – only City have scored against them over that period. Given that the Magpies have now failed to find the net since Gameweek 1, those holding Watford defenders will fancy their chances of earning another shut-out.

Going to be cool when the Captain Sensible article points to Sanchez(c) this weekend.

Cooler still when 90% avoid it, and ultimate cool when I don't and he bags a hatty in a 2-5 Arsenal win.

  17. Striker Bonus Point Malaise
    rozzo
    • 11 Years
    9 years, 1 month ago

    Bonus points affecting the strikers?

I am making a real claim to be playing 352 this season. Not only because there seems to be a lot of good midfield options at the moment and lack of strikers but the BAPS seem to heavily favour the midfielders and even defenders.

Bafetimbi Gomis has 4 goals in 5 games which is a great start to the season. You would be happy having him in your team with that ratio. Total points = 27. Total bonus points = 1

Jamie Vardy has 3 goals and 1 assist. Decent returns. Total points = 25. Total bonus points = 2

Now okay maybe you can argue Ayew and Mahrez are stealing all the bonus points away from them which is correct but surely on the evidence of the first 5 games we have seen the midfielders are much better options than the strikers?

Fernandinho for Man City has 1 more point than Vardy for example.

If you are one of those that just captains the big guns like Aguero and Sanchez or even Hazard and Costa then having 3 strikers is not necessary. Just leave the likes of a Ayew or Payet in your team ticking over instead of a third striker and I really do believe they would outscore a Lukaku or Benteke.

A Payet assist and bonus point is worth the same as a Benteke goal and no bonus point.

Disclaimer: It's only been 5 games I realise that. The strikers will score points over the season obviously but my argument is the midfielders will score more.

I wouldn't say this is a trend, just that Gomis & Vardy are not players that do enough in terms of bps generation

I think this is fair, but so far this isn't a season to be rigidly sticking to a formation imo - where you have a non-playing attacker. There are so many great mid and low-priced options, that you can afford to have that squad position as a good player, and you rotate. That's what I've been doing. It was mentioned in another article (by Jonty perhaps) over the int. break. I have a little headache each week who to bench (benched Benteke's goal this week), but in general it's going to work out having a strong balanced squad.

tbf Vardy has scored 2 of his goals when Mahrez hit a brace of goals and the next time a brace of assists

I made the transition to a 3-5-2 last week on wildcard broadly based on this rationale and getting goal scoring midfielders.

But realized I made a major mistake in the underlying assumption that Aguero is free of his injury woes.

An injury to Kun and i'm currently looking at a 4-5-1 with Wilson leading the line 😯 but because i'm so used to a 3-4-3, I'm starting to panic a little but do realize it's part and parcel of the 3-5-2 strategy.

      • 11 Years
      9 years, 1 month ago

I am beginning to ponder this myself, I've found on a couple of occasions when playing with potential wildcard teams that it comes to a straight shootout between Gomis and Ayew for my 7th attacking spot and in the end I usually decide Ayew in a 352 looks oh so marginally better than Gomis in a 343.

Good point well made but until the Wilson and Mahrez bandwagons fall off I can't see many people going 352 because they leave plenty of cash to have a strong 4-man (Mahrez + three biggies) midfield.

If your strikers are high on this, and haven't got bonus points - they are not going to.

      agreed on all counts

it's also another reason why I now almost never captain a striker (kun with a good home fixture aside)

if a mid scores in a low scoring game, he almost always gets 3 bonus - so if you're captaining him in a 1 nil or even a 2 nil, 2-1 victory he is likely to get SIXTEEN points for that goal

a striker now has to score/assist at least twice to seemingly get maximum bonus. That means a goal in a low scoring match is only worth eight to you. Half that of the midfield?

For me it's a no brainer.

His recent injury was with his knee and got injured at the same spot..For a player valued at 13.2 and benching him due to lack of fitness / injury does not make sense..So tempted for Aguero > Benteke..What are your thoughts?

Just seen Triggerlips' blog and team - really unlucky. Just shows you what an odd season this has been even for the seasoned vets.

Even though I don't own Payet, it was nice to see the community finally get some of the groove back as, at long last, an attacking players' underlying stats finally translated to FPL points.

I was just looking over the last 5 gwks and on 4 occasions my VC has outscored my captain. On the 5th time they were level.

I always captain like: (C) = Safe (VC) = Who I'd ideally 'like' to captain.
