Rate My Wildcard Team Surgery – Part Two

Welcome to the second of our Rate My Wildcard Team articles of the week. These will showcase the thoughts of one of the Fantasy Football Scout moderators and contributors team on their Wildcard. Hopefully some of their key issues will mirror your own. Feel free to use this article thread to put forward your Wildcard teams and to help others with their Wildcard-related issues. Jonty presented his wildcard thoughts earlier in the week and next up is Andy85wsm with his all-out assault on Gameweek 34.

My Wildcard Team

Robles – Darlow
Smalling – Bellerin – Gabriel – Sakho – Delaney
Sanchez – KDB – Lanzini – Bolasie – Coutinho
Mitrovic – Aguero – Lukaku

Strategy

I plan to use my Gameweek 33 Wildcard to set me up with 15 players for Gameweek 34, when I will use my bench boost. The reason I’m wildcarding now is that my pre-Gameweek 33 team is not set up for the doubles at all with only Sergio Aguero and Dimitri Payet as decent options. For Gameweek 37 I will use my triple captaincy chip.

Key Issues

The De Bruyne Sacrifice

By bringing in Kevin De Bruyne alongside Sergio Aguero I have a huge amount of cash tied up in an erratic Manchester City attack, that plays away from home twice. Am I sacrificing too much by focusing so much cash in just two players?

Lack of Leicester and Spurs

In constructing my Wildcard team I’m waving goodbye to Kasper Schmeichel, Riyad Mahrez, Jamie Vardy, Danny Rose, Dele Alli and Harry Kane. This is a scary prospect considering most have performed exceptionally well in recent weeks and all have a great Gameweek 35 fixture.

Sakho’s Inconsistency

Mamadou Sakho played like a schoolboy against Spurs in Gameweek 32, but like a seasoned warrior against Manchester United in the Europa League. Has he made too many mistakes to be considered nailed on in the Liverpool defence? Or will his excellent performances keep him in the first XI?

Regrets for Payet

Dimitri Payet is undoubtedly West Ham’s prize asset with his free kicks as good as penalties given his accuracy. Will I regret going for second best with Manuel Lanzini?

Mitrovic’s starts

Seeing Mitrovic benched against Norwich at the weekend looked ominous. He then came on to score a brace, including a penalty. He looks nailed on for now, but is he?

From the Sublime to the Ridiculously Dull

Yannick Bolasie represents a real maverick punt for the double Gameweek 33 for Crystal Palace. But keeping him for the London side’s next double in Gameweek 34 is a bridge too far for me. Instead I plan to swap him out for a player that is much maligned as the poster boy for dullards – James Milner. Is this the best use of that slot, or should I stick with Bolasie?

    RMWCT:

    Mignolet Robles
    Sakho Gabriel Rojo Ward Reid/Evans
    Ozil Sanchez Coutinho Lingard Antonio/Lanzini
    Kun Lukaku Mitrovic

Prefer Ozil over Payet. I see an imminent explosion.

Like it overall. Wouldn't have Reid/Evans with their poor fixtures. Also prefer Sanchez to Özil as he's more exciting and on form. Otherwise good.

Bit worried about some of the nailed-on-ness of my defenders.. Love my front 8 though.

    Migs. Robles.
    Bellerin. Clichy. Gabriel. Sakho. Darmian.
    Payet. Sanchez. KDB. Couts. Lanzini.
    Kun. Lukaku. Martial.

Thoughts? Think it's well balanced but as I said, worried about Clichy and Darmian and really want some MCI defensive cover.

As you say your attack is really good.

      A few comments on defense:

Bellerin and Sakho I wouldn't worry about.

Clichy is their first choice but you are right, you cannot escape the fact that CL matches will encourage Pellegrini to rotate where he can and Kolarov is a capable substitute.

Gabriel is also first choice, but I could see Wenger playing Mertesacker against WBA and their big players as he tends to rotate a bit depending on the opposition.

And we all know the story with MUN fullbacks, Darmian seems to be first choice but Young is back in training and Darmian tends to get subbed or rotated when there are other options.

WBA defence being way overlooked on FFS, Pulis will just park the bus against the big teams.

Why Bolasie over Ozil, the DGW in 33?

I really think Bolasie can deliver in gw 33 and Iwobi is a decent replacement for Ozil at the moment.

That way in gw 34 you can get Firmino for Bolasie and have a gw 35 player as well.

I do not like WBA defense and their fixtures seem very poor. Thats just me. Never rated them eventho i owned Myhill for quite some time this season.

As every Arsenal fan will tell you, Elneny is much more of a CM than Ramsey. His lack of discipline, required to have in that position, cost us many important points. I think/hope Ramsey will start playing on the wing once again.
Another point is, those extra games are in midweek, so I expect atleast some rotation (from all teams involved). Therefore a 19 year old, who only started 2 league games this season is quite a "rotation risk" for me.

That are all fair and good points. I just do not think he will drop Iwobi after his performances. Being 19 year old didnt hurt for quite a lot of players, but you do have a point.

    Hi all,

Firstly - would echo the thoughts that KDB (and double City attack for 2 away games) hamstrings this team. Not to mention the risk of rotation/rest. Think Payet plus cash is preferable.

Any thoughts on A vs B here?

    A. Jagielka + Martial
    B. Smalling + Mitrovic

    DDG - Darlow
    ??? - Sakho - Gabriel - Delaney - Morgan
    Sanchez - Ozil - Coutinho - Payet - Lanzini
    ??? - Aguero - Lukaku

I personally really like the KDB play, I myself am most likely going to crowbar him into a saturated midfield line-up also. For me it is more to do with how we (City) look with him in the side, for the past few weeks/months we have looked lost in attack and without much penetration, I feel he changes that. It is more a gut feeling from watching the games, rather than appreciation of the underlying stats, but he changes things, and should score well.
Given your TV I completely understand the Lanzini over Payet move due to what it allows you to do elsewhere, but it may hurt when viewed as a direct comparison of points between the two. On balance, I feel you'll be a winner in that one (if Lanzini is as nailed as he seems and continues his rich vein of form - 2 big if's I suppose).
Rafa would be stupid not to start with Mitrovic moving forward, irrespective of the tactics underlying the team he selects. He seems to have quickly become a talisman on the pitch and almost imbues other players with the drive and determination that so many of the Newcastle players are lacking. I can't remember who said it a couple of days back, but I believe he has only had one yellow in 20 starts (can someone please verify that?), so despite a fiery start to premier league life, he also seems to have calmed down.
The lack of Leicester and Spurs assets is something that is also worrying me. Mainly it is a Leicester defender and Harry Kane personally. My viewing tells me that Leicester would take 1-0 from here on out (obviously), but are also playing that way as well, and it seems Mahrez is playing quite unselfishly at the moment (bad for his FPL potential). On the Spurs front, it simply feels wrong to remove a player who is finding ways to score. But I am likely to do the same, and like many, I imagine it is mainly chasing the doubles as on paper there is greater return potential. I suppose your decision was made easier due to the cost factor also involved. I shall be joining you behind that sofa.
I like the Milner option, and whilst I understand he isn't a flair player, I generally don't get the dislike for him in these parts. He seems to score points, thus is a good FPL asset for his price. For me he is a significantly better option than Bolasie (maybe aside from the way you are using him as a one week punt - I presume) as Bolasie has flattered to deceive for a while now. Am I right in saying that he played up front last week and failed to get a shot (or was it SoT?). Palace are poor IMO, and a double simply gives them two opportunities to show us that. Transfers waiting to happen.
On your team in general, I like the balance and options throughout the side. Personally I would avoid that keeper combination like the plague, but I suppose a Migs (or even DDG) would be out of the question for you? I like the outlay for Smalling, it would be ridiculous to go without a ManU defender given fixtures and LVG tactics. Nice team mate.

OK so I read it - mainly agree with everything although I feel you're probably a little biased on the KDB front (grav, name and use of 'we') 🙂

City attack away from home has been erratic to say the least. Think KDB has a huge risk of rotation and rest as well, and in the whole - not worth losing Payet over. i toyed with the idea too, but decided doubling up on a very expensive City attack wasn't worth it.

Completely understandable, and I am likely a bit biased (even if I try not to be).
As I said it is more a gut feeling with how we are playing, and that Lanzini appears to be picking up from where he left off before he missed all those games. Payet is scoring some ridiculous free kicks but it is a lot of money saved. Mainly the point I was making is that going without him and using that money elsewhere isn't as much of a gamble as people seem to be making it out IMO.

Guys - a repost of something I posted on RMWCT1.

For me, it really comes down to Kane and Mahrez v KDB and Martial. Opinions would be much appreciated!

Option 1 (current - 13 Dgw): Mignolet, Smalling, Clichy, Mahrez, Kane

Option 2 (giving me 14 Dgw but only 10 for gw15 without a hit): De Gea, Clyne, Simpson, KDB, Martial

    Thanks!

More SGW means less worry about GW35, it means you do not have to take any hits to get players in.

Also, Kane is the current top scorer in the PL. Why on earth would you ignore something like that?

I think this is my point really. Kane has proven himself this season - I'm not sure KDB will get the game time to allow him to do the same.

Clichy seems pretty nailed to me and City haven't been too bad defensively given Kompany's latest absence.

not like martial is tearing it up and scoring 2 goals per game, he has only scored 2 goals once all season in his burst onto the scene at the start and since then has just 2 gw with double points. 3.1m diff can be used to get the nailed on utd defender and a better balance to a team

    OK, RMT,
looking ahead to week 34 but here's what I am looking at. Thoughts?
    Robles
    Clichy Delaney Fuchs Bellerin
    Sanchez KDB Coutinho Mahrez
    Kun Lukaku
    Hennesey Martial Rojo Lanzini

    Thanks in advance

I don't think Rojo is nailed - De Gea or Smallling would be my preference. Do you have enough FTs to field 11 in gw35? Otherwise looks pretty solid

Could either go Smalling or Darmian instead of Rojo. Will have 2 FT's for GW35.

Isn't it a bit early to count on KDB for GW34 (and even 33)? h'es played less than 1 hour. Will it be enough to be fit for the DGW, considering the champion's league match against PSG ?

    Again tinkered. God. Head hurts.

    Robles / Hart
    Smalling / Bellerin / Delaney / Clyne / Simpson
    Sanchez / Cout / Payet / Iwobi / Bolasie
    Kun / Kaku / Martial

Have 3.8 ITB with this team... I could upgrade Bolasie to Firmino for gw 34 if fit which would give me a player in gw 35. Means i would have to take a HIT to field 11 in gw 35. What would you change here?

    Got bottomed- RMWWCT

    Robles Darlow

Sakho Gabriel Otamendi Coleman Monreal(PVA from GW35on)
Sanchez Lingard Coutinho Payet Bolasie(Lallana from GW34on)
    Aguero Mitrovic Lukaku

    5DGW in GW33
    BB-15DGW in GW 34
    11 for GW 35
and TC with 11players in GW37

Need 0,8 to get Firmino instead of Lallana but Clichy instead of Otamendi could be risky with CL as well.
Ozil instead of Sanchez is the other one. But seems crazy at current form.
Lanzini instead of Payet? I wouldn't dare..
Iwobi is too risky for me because of Ramsey and Wilshere returning.

I would go firmino and clichy if you wanted the liverpool mid double up. Clichy has played all bar 1 of the last 9 in prem (albeit subbed late on a couple of times). The brazilian duo could prove a nice little differential in this endless sea of similar looking wildcards!

Those of us with Martial in our wildcard drafts, switching him to Rashford opens up a whole world of exciting options. Will anyone be brave enough to do it? He's played 90 in three of the last five matches and started all of them.

Same front 8 as mine except I'm currently keeping Mahrez over Cleverley.

I'm not a big fan of the double liverpool defence - if i was trippling up, I would go with two of their midfielders. Perhaps downgrade Sakho to Delaney (easy swap to Kirchhoff) and upgrade Cleverley to Lennon or a dgw player with a single in 35?

I had thought that this was a refereeing mistake:

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lmukApGud9I

But apparently UEFA has in all silence instructed the referees to sanction a punch in the face by a yellow card only:

    http://www.dailymotion.com/video/x428trs_luis-suarez-punch-filipe-luis_sport

Ok, but it would be more fair if all clubs and players were informed of this.

Already sold Aguero as away fixtures worry me, and his price enabled KDB & Sánchez.

Reckon this has a good shot at bringing in 100+ points

    Mignolet / de Gea
    Bellerín / Clichy / Simpson / Gabriel / Darmian
De Bruyne / Payet / Coutinho / Sánchez / Mahrez
    Lukaku / Kane / Mitrovic

Any suggestions for improvement? Not massively bothered about having 15 DGW players.

City def is tricky. I think the only two who won't be rotated over the next GW are Otamendi and Hart. Clichy and Kola will be. Sagna and zaba two. Question mark over Demichelis / Mangala. Mangala could be the cheap and most sure option but Pellegrini can also rotate him.
I considered clichy but I don't feel confortable with this.

Plus they play PSG so pretty sure Pellegrini will play clichy both times to cope with lucas speed at PSG

As you say - it just depends on whether Clichy plays both ECL games. He's locked that spot in the prem (played 8 of the last 9, 90 mins in 6 of those and 75-80 mins in the other 2). Plus more attacking chances.

For an Aguero-less team this is pretty good. Would go with Robles and Smalling over De Gea and Darmian probably. I think going with 2/3 single gameweek players is fine - everyone has the same ones anyway.

I don't put much stock on Everton keeping clean sheets - personally I don't understand the Robles bandwagon.

Selling Aguero and a couple of others was painful, £2.1m hit! But giving his recent form I think Mitrovic could well score as many points.

Smalling's my preference, as is Fuchs mentioned by Sky Guru below, price rules them out though.

I've got almost the exact same team ( so I like your thinking naturally 😉 ). Instead I've chosen for Hart+Jags instead of Smalling and Darlow. Basically because Smalling has Spurs away in 33 and a blank in 35 which means I'll bench him twice in 3 rounds. It also allows me to have another 33 DGW player while maintaining the same amount of DGW 37 players ( Robles is my other GK). I'm very scared of not owning Payet, but you can't have them all I guess and Lanzini looks like a great second option especially for that price. The difference between Sanchez or Ozil and KDB or Toure/Silva (?) seems much bigger right now than the difference between Payet and Lanzini. Also, WHU have Arsenal in 33, Leicester away in 34 and blank in 35 ( as you already said) so the chances of him outscoring Lanzini by a huge amount are not that big I guess ( I hope)

I recon this is enough for the DGW 33/34 Bit annoyed at losing Payet but i'd have to swap KDB for some out of form cheapo player with no GW35

    Migs/Robles
    Smalling/Fuchs/Gabs/Bellerin/Sakho
    KDB/Mahrez/Lanzini/Coutinho/Sanchez
    Aguero/Lukaku/Martial

    Is it enough?
