Moving Target

Moving Target – Andros Townsend

After signing goalkeeper Steve Mandanda from Marseille, Crystal Palace made their second significant move in the summer transfer window last week by acquiring Newcastle midfielder Andros Townsend for £13 million. The 24-year-old put pen to paper on a five-year contract with the Eagles, and should add further creativity to a Palace midfield that already contains the likes of Yannick Bolasie, Wilfried Zaha and Yohan Cabaye.

Speaking to the club’s official website, Townsend outlined his reasons for making the move to Selhurst Park just two months after dropping into the Championship with the relegated Magpies:

“I’m extremely delighted. I had chats with the manager and chairman before I signed and I’m pleased to a part of Crystal Palace’s future… It was a pretty easy decision to choose Crystal Palace because of the direction they’re heading. They play a system that suits wingers and you only need to look at Wilfried Zaha, Yannick Bolasie and Jason Puncheon to see how they’ve excelled and how influential they are for Palace. I want to be a part of that and help this club reach its potential.”

The History

Townsend joined the Tottenham Hotspur academy at the age of eight, but was sent out on several loan spells during his time with the club. In March 2009, he made his professional debut for Yeovil Town against MK Dons, while the following season, Townsend spent loan spells at League One sides Leyton Orient and MK Dons, making 33 appearances in total, scoring four goals and registering three assists.

He then headed to Ipswich Town at the start of the 2010/11 campaign for what was intended to be a season-long loan, but after playing in only 16 matches for the Tractor Boys, scoring once and providing two assists, he was recalled by then Tottenham manager Harry Redknapp in December 2010.

The winger marked his senior Tottenham debut with a goal and a man of the match performance against Charlton Athletic in an FA Cup tie in January 2011, but Townsend was shortly after farmed out on loan once more, first to Watford, and then to Millwall, making 14 appearances in total, scoring twice and garnering three assists.

While Townsend did feature for Spurs over the following two seasons, he never really established himself as a regular starter, and spent further loan spells with Leeds United and Birmingham City in the Championship and QPR in the Premier League, where he scored twice and provided two assists in 12 league appearances.

In total, Townsend made 50 Premier League appearances for Tottenham, scoring three goals and registering four assists, before making the move to Newcastle in January this year for a fee of around £12 million in search of regular first-team football. He would prove to be a key figure in Newcastle’s battle to avoid relegation, scoring four goals and providing two assists in 13 matches for the Magpies, but ultimately the club failed to avoid the drop.

Townsend represented England at every level from Under 16-21 and made his senior debut against Montenegro in October 2013, scoring in a 4-1 win. He has earned 10 international caps thus far, scoring three goals, although he was left out of Roy Hodgson’s 23-man squad for Euro 2016.

The Prospects

In spite of the Magpies’ relegation, Townsend’s move to Selhurst Park comes as something of a surprise. After years of trying to establish himself as a first-choice option at the Lane, he had finally nailed down a regular role on Tyneside only to jump ship and head back to London with Palace.

Certainly, that short stint at St James’ at least afforded us a chance to assess the winger’s potential if handed secure pitch time.

Townsend’s ability to take on defenders and cut in from the right flank, firing shots on goal with his left foot, should see him handed a role on the right of Pardew’s 4-2-3-1 set-up next time out.

This could result in Zaha – who was voted the club’s Player of the Year award last season – being shifted over to the left, which could see Yannick Bolasie stationed in a central support role behind a lone striker.

Such a scenario looks ominous for the likes of Jason Puncheon and Bakary Sako, with Yohan Cabaye and James McArthur likely to be the first-choice pairing in central midfield. The fact that Zaha, Puncheon and Sako all managed just two goals each last term highlights why Townsend has been brought in, with the Eagles in desperate need for more firepower in the final third.

Bolasie and Cabaye managed five goals apiece last season, making them the club’s joint-top scorers, but while the latter has some appeal should he remain the first-choice penalty taker, he’s perhaps more suited as an asset in daily Fantasy offerings such as DraftKings.

Analysing his statistics at Newcastle in the second part of last term, Townsend averaged a shot every 47.4 minutes, which was actually inferior to Sako (33.3), Bolasie (38.4) and Cabaye (41.7), although Puncheon and Zaha trailed all four players, managing a shot every 50.4 and 81.5 minutes respectively. Nonetheless, his conversion rate of 16.7% underlines the new boy’s eye for goal as Pardew looks to improve a side that scored just 39 times last season, the third-lowest tally in the top-flight.

In terms of creativity, Townsend produced a key pass every 43.8 minutes for Newcastle last term, which was better than any of the Palace midfielders, with Puncheon (44.5) the next best, while Zaha and Bolasie only created a scoring chance every 60.9 and 90.3 minutes respectively, suggesting Townsend should have a clear edge when it comes to assist potential.

Given that fact Bolasie was priced at 6.5 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) last season, we can expect a similar price for Townsend. Should he establish himself as a first-choice wide man as expected, that could represent terrific value for Fantasy managers, particularly bearing in mind Palace’s favourable start (WBA, tot, BOU, mid, STO) to the campaign, with only the trip to White Hart Lane in Gameweek 2 looking a difficult match-up.

Finding value in the mid-price bracket was crucial to any successful Fantasy campaign last season, and with Palace being heavily linked with a move for Liverpool striker Christian Benteke, Eagles players such as Townsend could well be popular options. His prospects would only be boosted by the addition of the Belgian striker, and with perhaps a point to prove after being omitted by England, we could see the former Newcastle winger make a fast start with his new side.

So what's your goalkeeper strategy for the new season? Going for one main keeper or alternating between two?

I'm thinking Courtois 5.0 and Heaton 4.5 for the start of the season, price depending of course. Their fixtures rotate nicely in the opening weeks - Swansea, Watford, Burnley, Hull. I expect Chelsea to be more solid this season and Heaton was great in FPL last time Burnley were up.

I usually go for just one keeper. rotating leaves many points on the bench

Could be but was sent off twice last season, never kept many clean sheets and was injured / rotated for spells so I'm guessing he'll be lower than Lloris, Cech, Hart, De Gea etc.

It's more about who he plays for. You can't have a Chelsea first choice goalie at 5.0

It should be a bit of both. Last season was he one of the lower scoring regulars. I expect an improvement in Chelsea but it's not guaranteed so he should be priced at a level lower than the other top keepers.

My feeling here is last season De Gea started at 5.5. In 2014/15 he had a great season and scored significantly more points than Courtois did last season. Man Utd also finished 4th in 2014/15 whereas Chelsea were way off that last season. Applying that logic, Courtois shouldn't be priced the same as De Gea was last year. Who knows though!

Maybe... If he is, I'm deffo taking a one keeper approach. But if not I'll have two 4.5s to rotate.

I think that's the issue... At 5.0, what sort of ownership do you think Courtois would have on GW1?

Not sure. Got a feeling more people would still pick De Gea & Cech.

I reckon the Chelsea back line will all be 5-5.5m except Ivanovic.

At 5M, yes, they'd pick De Gea or Cech instead, but both will be 5.5 (unless FPL decide to make some goalies 6.0 again).

I hope you're right about the Chelsea defence, I'd be all over them, but I can't see it. The price allocation can't all be about last year's performances. They surely have to base it on potential to get back to their normal level this year.

How much does end of season form have an effect on teams/players and your choices for this season. Can it be even counted as form which such a gap? Will players like Townsend, Rondon, Tadic be picked because of this "form"? Leicester as a team certainly seem to be the major success story of from carrying over....

I think form over the course of a season is the biggest indicator of how a player will play the following season. Evident in players like Fabregas. I want someone who's consistent, not just a short term hauler.

People will be more influenced by. Pre season form which is even more unreliable due to lack of intensity.
Would be interesting to check whether there is a correlation club wise between a strong finish followed by a strong start.

Leicester are an obvious example of a team finishing very strong in 14/15 and starting very stong in 15/16. Maybe it is common, maybe not.

My biggest problem is now in preseason

What constitutes form coming into the new season?
How do we know someone is the next Mahrez, or is just a flash in the pan? E.g. if Martial scores in each of his first games will it continue or will he drop off?

These are things that I find very hard to pinpoint

Yes, seperating the Michus from the Depays is not easy in real time. I have been studying new players to the premier league and it seems an indication of doing well has some age related correlation. 25-29 year olds entering the premier league for first time do better than the oldies or the young. As a group that is. Always exceptions

Someone made me never forget that he chose mahrez but I didn't allow him to put him in his team last season. He'll never forgive me.

I think form can carry on. There will probably be examples either way. Leicester kept it going, but chelsea just gave up but their form was bad towards the end of the previous season - they were scraping wins.

This year, there are so many different managers. I'd be surprised if Conte, Jose, Pep and Koeman don't get their teams in ship shape order and ready for the season. As an arsenal fan I wouldn't be surprised if we lose to Liverpool on the first day of the season as well. I think Spurs will be slow out of the blocks too.

Its so hard to predict, I'm still backing Ibrahimovic to start well

We also have to keep in mind that this is an unusual year because of all the international competitions(Copa America, EURO 2016 AND the Olympics). Mahrez hasn't played any of those for example and Leicester in general has a lot of players who haven't taken or aren't going to take part in these competitions. That could make a difference for some of the teams.

I think experienced FPL players will have a much better accuracy rate of estimating prices than using the Telegraph as a benchmark. They have completely different price structures, in terms of the difference between a top player a mid-range player, and often a bargain in one competition might be over-proved in the other.

I wouldn't try to read anything into their prices at all.

I once saw a Newcastle front 3 of Keegan , Beardsley and Waddle at Sheff Wed. That was great to watch but Gazza had more talent than any of them. His football brain was exceptional and it is such a tragedy that his real life one is the opposite.

Agree, last year people applied it with Aguero and Kane and it was disaster a lot of the time. One would blank at home, other would haul away even despite tough fixtures.

Kane will be a good differential i reckon but not at the start.

He played more minutes than any other striker last season, was clearly tired at the Euros and then starts the season so soon in a team with no Dembele.

Ill jump on board eventually im sure

Maybe this is me being a very sore Argentina fan, but I don't necessarily think that Higuain is much of an improvement on Giroud. Same "qualities", same donkey aspect. In an aggressive league like the PL, I favor Giroud because he's more physical. Higuain is too lazy for this league.

Been asking this for a long time now and never got an answer. Where do i find cash leagues? Been on top of my form and i cant get advantage of it. Finished 200 in euro fantasy. Cant make the same mistake with FPL...

Pay through your Skybet account and Sky hold the money all season then pay our at the end. Means you can play against strangers and stealth into their advertised leagues on FB and Twitter etc

I've said it before I'll say it again.

If anyone is paying to enter a cash fpl league they needed their head examined if they then share details of the league to other potential competitors on this site.

Following on from the form following-on discussion, last year I put together some tables primarily looking for things that influence bonus points for each position but it ended up being really useful at form-spotting when I focused on game week 'blocks' of my choosing. Here they are from game week 32 (after the last international break):

    Goalkeepers http://members.fantasyfootballscout.co.uk/my-stats-tables/view/4722/
    Defenders http://members.fantasyfootballscout.co.uk/my-stats-tables/view/4723/
    Midfielders http://members.fantasyfootballscout.co.uk/my-stats-tables/view/4724/
    Forwards http://members.fantasyfootballscout.co.uk/my-stats-tables/view/4725/

It's my own interpretation as you can only have so many columns

Dis's hulk above reminded me that I had a couple of Leicester players in my team from the outset last season simply because of their amazing upturn in form in the last couple of months of 14/15 (last 9 = W7 D2).

Intriguingly, another team accumulated just one point less in the last 9 games of last season and were the leading form side over that particular period, beating Leicester themselves by a point with the rest another couple of points adrift.

150/1 for Southampton to emulate Leicester anyone? Maybe not, but I think I'll have some of their players in my team.
