Scout Notes

Scout Notes – Internationals – Saturday

Romelu Lukaku continues his prolific form as Belgium struggle to save a point from their latest World Cup qualifier without the inspiration of Eden Hazard and Kevin De Bruyne. There are also further goals for France’s Olivier Giroud and more woe for the Dutch on another busy night of international action. Here’s how it played out…

Belgium 1 Greece 1

Fantasy Premier League’s man of the moment Romelu Lukaku grabbed a late equaliser for Belgium against a Greek side that finished the match with just nine men.

Shackled for much of Saturday’s encounter, the Everton striker eventually made his mark, chesting down a Dries Mertens centre before blasting a volley into the bottom corner – a goal which epitomised his current form and confidence.

Lukaku seems to be developing a liking for late shows – he scored twice at the end of the 4-0 win over Hull City last weekend – but his 46.8% ownership base will now be hoping that their man is preserved for Belgium’s Tuesday night friendly in Russia.

Coach Roberto Martinez certainly has plenty of options up front – Divock Origi, Christian Benteke and Michy Batshuayi were all unused substitutes against the Greeks.

Chelsea midfielder Eden Hazard was a key absentee. The calf injury that kept him out of the Gameweek 29 victory at Stoke City has lead to him missing Belgium’s two internationals, with the playmaker remaining a doubt to resume Premier League action against Crystal Palace this weekend. Recent reports sound optimistic on his prognosis, however.

The 7.0% of Fantasy Premier League managers still holding Manchester City’s Kevin De Bruyne will also face an anxious wait ahead of his visit to Arsenal on Sunday. Suffering from a groin problem, he is said to be returning to Manchester for treatment having watched from the stands in Brussels on Saturday.

Elsewhere, Thibaut Courtois, Toby Alderweireld, Jan Vertonghen, Nacer Chadli and Marouane Fellaini all started for Belgium, with Mousa Dembele replacing the Manchester United midfielder just after the hour mark and Kevin Mirallas coming on for a late cameo.

Luxembourg 1 France 3

Arsenal striker Olivier Giroud scored twice as France made relatively hard work of their trip across the border.

The forward has started seven of the Gunners’ last ten league matches, scoring five times, and his double for Les Bleus won’t have hindered his cause ahead of a huge home match with Manchester City next Sunday.

With two double Gameweeks and a relatively kindly run-in, Arsenal players offer the potential for good returns as the season reaches its climax.

If Giroud can somehow offer us a degree of security in the face of strong competition from the likes of Alexis Sanchez and Danny Welbeck, the 2.7%-owned forward could yet prove differential of note.

Giroud was one of four Premier League players to start and finish the Luxembourg match, the others being Hugo Lloris, Laurent Koscielny and N’Golo Kante.

FPL managers will be hoping all four are spared when France face Spain in a Tuesday night friendly.

Elsewhere, the decline of Holland continued with a 2-0 defeat in Bulgaria.

Bruno Martins Indi, Daley Blind and Georginio Wijnaldum – with the latter pair recovering from recent head injuries. They all started for the Dutch, with Wijnaldum replaced at half-time.

Spurs keeper Michel Vorm was an unused sub for the Netherlands, who are in danger of failing to qualify for their second successive major tournament just three years after finishing third at the 2014 World Cup.

The Dutch have a friendly with Italy on Tuesday.

Switzerland beat Latvia 1-0, with Arsenal’s Granit Xhaka starting and finishing the match and even managing to avoid a booking. Stoke City midfielder Xherdan Shaqiri calmed recent fitness concerns by playing 78 minutes for the Swiss.

Defensive duo Cedric Soares and Jose Fonte lasted the full 90 minutes as Portugal eased past Hungary 3-0, while Liverpool centre-half helped Estonia keep a clean sheet in a 0-0 stalemate in Cyprus.

Portugal host Sweden in a friendly on Tuesday, with Estonia also in action against Croatia that night.

Sunderland midfielder Seb Larsson didn’t make it off the bench in Sweden’s 4-0 win over Belarus, while Chelsea reserver goalkeeper Asmir Begovic enjoyed a rare start as Bosnia Herzegovina swept Gibraltar aside 5-0.

Nice to see Coleman selling has slowed down giving us a couple more days.

KDB injury could mean Pep less likely to rotate, could also be good news for non owners

Big head to head I need to win next GW, what you experts think?

    A. Coleman > Valencia (Play Capoue)

    B. Antonio+Coleman > Pedro+Valencia (-4)

    Heaton (Jaku)
    Walker Alonso *Coleman* (Pieters Evans)
Siggy J. King Mane *Antonio* (Capoue)
    Costa Aguero Lukaku

I would probably go B as I love to tinker and overthink things but I think A is best.
Capoue will likely only get you 2 points but Pedro would need to score you 6 points to break even and he has only scored 6 or more points 9 times this season, and only scored more than 6 points in 7 gameweeks.

That's like a 1/3 chance he'd make up for the hit
Plus gives you a playing guy (and a good one) from next week onwards

Yeah and a 2/3 chance that he won't. But obviously does give you a better player going forward. Depends if you want to keep him in your team or not. Or could you wait and do the transfer next week?

Honestly a gamble, do you have faith that he can score 6 points to make it worth it? Clean sheet and an assist is certainly possible though.

Tadic has some good matches coming up and 2 DGWs so a good option long term. Depends if you are thinking ahead or focusing more on the head to head this week.

I'm looking at bringing Zaha in for GW34, I reckon he's the only decent option in that Palace team and he's got something about him this season. Might even bring him in the week before the double as Palace have Leicester. The goal he scored the other night was incredible!

Is Cédric still a viable Southampton option.

    If not, why not?

    0.6 cheaper than Bertrand.

0.5 more expensive than Yoshida, but surely more attacking potential and certainty of starts should Caeceras or VVD fitness levels return...

    Thoughts appreciated 🙂

tbf SOT drew the short straw from the scheduler so massive rotation was always on the cards. You'd think 2 games a week with reasonable rest is okay for highly trained professional footballers.

Not sure if I will bother getting Sanchez since I have Mane, Eriksen, Siggy and King since I have just enough money to do a swap from Llorente to Ibra. I'll probably end up getting rid of Costa but I really want to keep Mane and Eriksen. Is Sanchez even worth it?

If you are on a WC which 2DFs and MF combo would you have for this team for 14.5m

    Lloris Valdes

    Alonso Gibson Yoshida xxxxxx xxxxxx

    Sanchez Eriksen Pedro Albrighton xxxxxx

    Costa Niasse Lukaku

    Any ideas would be welcomed

      WC:

      De Gea - Pickford
      Luiz - Vertonghen - Yoshida - Stones - Barragan
      Sanchez - Eriksen - Pedro - Sigurdsson - Tadic
      Costa - Lukaku - Barnes

If you have money left over upgrade Luiz to Alonso, Vertonghen to Walker etc.

      1. diesel001

Given how little money you have perhaps:

        Jakupovic - Pickford
        Luiz - Vertonghen - Yoshida - Stones - Barragan
        Sanchez - Eriksen - Pedro - Sane - Redmond
        Costa - Lukaku - Barnes

That will give you cover for DGW 37 (Pickford, Luiz, Vertonghen, Yoshida, Stones, Sanchez, Eriksen, Pedro, Sane, Redmond, Costa) and you can manage DGW34 / DGW37 with FTs.

Hmm, that's not a lot of money. De Roon for the mid perhaps, leaving you money for Valencia and maybe Britos or Cameron? Or take a risk on a cheaper MUN defender, like Rojo, matched with Cedric? Tough decision. With that TV I might think about going without Sanchez so that every thing else is not so stretched.

Liverpool are the highest scoring team in the league with 61 goals.

Where would they be now if Klopp and Sakho had acted like adults and, as a result, Liverpool's defence wasn't so leaky?

3rd probably. Liverpool's problem has been beating bottom half teams away from home. They should be playing Sturridge in those games IMO to provide a more direct threat. They have a philosophical issue too - Conte would shut up shop away from home - Klopp tries to play the same way and keeps going for goals even when they are up.

Nobody really knows but the delusion from one or two regarding Sakho is a real thing. They finished 8th when he was playing. It's p!ss easy to claim that Sakho alone would be responsible for the 14 points needed to overtake Chelsea.

Was looking at a wildcard but mainly want to improve the defence so think it may be a bit silly to use ATM. Unless I play it this week then look to bring in players for DGW37, which should be relatively straightforward.

    Heaton/Foster
    Baines/Coleman/Brunt/Yoshida/Friend
    Sanchez/Siggy/Son/King/Capoue
    Llorente/Lukaku/Aguero

    1 FT, 3.0 ITB

I want to bring in Valencia, Bertrand and Vardy this week but think an 8 point hit may be a bit much. I'm 89 points behind my main rival so need to take a few chances before the big DGW.

Coleman, Baines & Llorente --> Valencia, Bertrand & Vardy leaves me exactly 0.0 ITB.

    Opinions?

      Llorente could outscore Vardy

Llorente does have a good fixture tbf. I know -4pt hits on defenders aren't great but thinking more longer term. I may have other priorities due to injuries maybe.

    2. Football Weekender
      • 8 Years

They look like good moves but I'd be mindful that you'll have a lot of money invested in your front three. Having a Spurs defender and one of Alli/Eriksen will also probably be important given ownership so I'd maybe be looking at a plan to address that? I'm guessing you'll. e looking at Agüero to Ibra before the DGW too?

      1. Sir_Durs8
        • 13 Years

My main rival has Alli and Walker so need to go different on that front. Son is my differential to them but probably should have gone for Eriksen in hindsight. Yes, Aguero to Ibra before GW34 is on the cards.

    Which one!! Cheers

    a) Mane Siggy Pedro Alli Firmino
    Luk Vardy Llorente

    b) Mane Sanchez Pedro King Firm
    Luk Vardy Llorente

    The diff is:

    *Valencia/Sanchez/King/Llorente

    or

    *Brunt/Siggy/Alli/Giroud.

(Own brunt but could swap for valencia in oprion (a) )

The 1st option allows Brunt > Valencia in time (0.9ITB) whereas option two leaves. 0ITB.

      Hart
      Dier Stones Cahill
      Walker Henderson Livermore Rose
      Lallana Alli
      Kane

I like it because 5 of the team are Spurs, but playing in the positions they play for their club in. Lallana is a good replacement for Eriksen. Cahill, Hart and Stones also playing in their preferred positions per their club sides. CM is the issue for me.

We overcomplicate things. If someone is playing 40+ games a season as a wingback it makes sense for the international team to use them as a wingback. Our two best club sides play a variation of 3-4-3 / 3-4-2-1. Let's mirror them and make it easy for club players to fit into the international system.

100% this happens. Use the stats and your judgement. Things like YMA's article and the FFS polls also useful.

For the most part it is good people trying to help. I remember going for a big Sigurdsson (c) a few seasons ago and one of the main guys backing it with me also did it. The rest of the big (c) picks didn't do well and Sigurdsson got double figures

Good times. I hope to be able to tell my grandkids that one day

Manchester City confident of landing Danny Rose with Luke Shaw set to head to Spurs https://t.co/3JxPfw3FjY

Poor source but something that I can materialising over the summer.

Poch knows Shaw. I think he would get Lallana too if he could.

Good old International breaks. Have to fill those column inches somehow while there's no PL on.

Can't see any reason for Rose to want to leave Spurs other than for financial reasons. Just signed a new contract. Young improving side, new stadium on the way. I'd argue Spurs are in a far better place than City as a club atm (who need a massive overhaul )

The Kane wanted by Utd one makes me chuckle whenever that's mentioned. What possible reason would Kane want to leave Spurs to go to Utd?

      Complete non-starters imo.

Had a few injuries in my draft league. Not a lot of free agents to pick from, and price doesn't matter. If you had to, which would you choose for the run in?

    A) Markovic
    B) Chambers/Fabio
    C) Yoshida
    D) Stones

Stones - have a look at GW32 onwards. No CL now too.
